Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the process of healing and reconciliation between the victim and the offender in a post-TRC period in South Africa is being investigated with a view to the challenge it poses to pastoral care. The focus is specifically on the post-TRC period rather than the period during which the TRC operated. The post-TRC period is a period where the truth about the apartheid past is partially known, where guilt and mourning are part of the offender's struggle, where suffering, in all areas of life, is part of the victims survival, where there is an understanding of the emotions victims and offenders experience, where restitution and reconstruction create a new vision and orientation for victims and offenders and where the church is able to interpret the past, present and future in order make healing and reconciliation a reality. To accomplish healing and reconciliation between victims and offenders in the post-TRC period is regarded as crucially important in order to ensure that the atrocities of the past, in some form or another, will not be repeated. To ensure that healing and reconciliation between the victim and the offender is accomplished on a personal and a public level, it is necessary to gain a clear understanding of the practical situation of the victim and the offender. It was found that the terms "victim" and "offender" have to be conceived in a comprehensive way in view of the socio-political context of South Africa, and that guilt forms a core element, which calls for great sensitivity and empathy on the part of pastoral care. Within this comprehensive understanding it was also found that guilt is not to be conceived and explained merely psychologically and socially, but also theologically. For this reason it is crucial to conceive of victims and offenders within their context and to comprehend the real impact of guilt, suffering and mourning. Although these experiences take place on different levels, they form an indispensable indicator for achieving healing and reconciliation in South Africa (chapter 2). For reconciliation and healing to be realized between victim and offender it is essential, furthermore, that both should face the truth of what occurred in the past. In this regard it is necessary that truth should not be considered as mere verifiable facts. Rather, truth should be conceived as a process of interpretation aimed at the revealing of meaning within certain relations, contexts and experiences. Apart from having a liberating effect, truth is also a prerequisite for reconciliation (chapter 3). Subsequently, the influence of pastoral theologies on healing and reconciliation between victim and offender is discussed. It was found that pastoral care, to render a significant contribution to healing and reconciliation in South Africa, should make the paradigmatic shift from an individual client-centred pastoral approach to a hermeneutic cultural approach. It is essential for healing and reconciliation to be broadened from a mere subjective/individual understanding thereof, to healing and reconciliation as a systemic process of understanding and interpretation (hermeneutical) that is connected to social relations and inculturation. To ensure that this hermeneutic of reconciliation will have an impact on the practical post-TRC situation, it should be supplemented by a doing theology, functioning within a wisdom perspective; id est, a creative programme to bring together victims and offenders, as well as those who have been existentially effected by (the wounds caused by) apartheid (chapter 4). Finally, for remembering and storytelling to take place, and be significant for the process of healing and reconciliation between victim and offender, it is essential that it must be embedded in a practical-theological ecclesiology within which the church can serve as a forum for healing and reconciliation. To achieve healing and reconciliation, a liturgy of healing is proposed. It is important that the content and form of a liturgy of healing be determined by the following core elements: remembering, forgiveness, and the use of metaphors, symbols and rituals.

Full textIt was developed a simple approach for the calculation of a modular construction system for box sections (profile structures) of different cross-sectional dimensions. These profile structures consists of WVC (Wood Veneer Composites). The approach maps the static load case and the fatigue behavior under pulsating three-point bending. By using a structural component made from commercial birch plywood, the calculation approach is specified and verified. Based on the force-deformation behavior of the analyzed single components in connection with the capillary-porous structure of the wood, the calculation approach dispense on an analysis of the tensions. Instead, a criterion, which calculates the critical normal strain in the outer fibers of the structural components, is used. Furthermore, a method of a low-cycle fatigue test (LCF, abbr. 1e+03 cycles) is presented. This method detects the “knee point" of the fatigue limit line for the profiles. That point is usually determined by the use of a high-cycle fatigue tests (HCF, 1e+06 until 1e+07 cycles)

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study an investigation into Arnold van Wyk’s song oeuvre — including the published and unpublished (completed and incomplete) songs — is done on the basis of the available composition sketches in the Arnold van Wyk Collection at Stellenbosch University. Firstly, Van Wyk as composer of art song in South Africa was put in perspective against the broader cultural context, especially in relation to Afrikaans poets who were his contemporaries. An overall view is also provided of possible influences that other composers had on his work. This provides an holistic picture of Van Wyk as composer of the art song. In his Juvenilia a surprisingly large amount of his music language is present, though not yet mature. Four prominent periods characterise the discussion of Van Wyk’s song oeuvre. In addition to these periods the study provides a summary that clearly shows his development as an art song composer as well as the musical devices which, in the course of time, became characteristic as part of his style in song writing. Owing to the fact that the setting to music of each song’s vocal part is analysed in close relationship to the source text, the complete text have been provided, with Afrikaans verbatim translations for the Latin and Old Dutch poems. Even though the composer sometimes only sets a couple of stanzas of the text, the complete poem is provided to properly orientate the reader. This allows the complete picture of each song to be taken into account. The relationship between each text and its setting to music of the song’s vocal part is analysed. This also applies to the illustrative meaning of where in the vocal range each text lies (the range as well as tessiture of the vocal part) and the illustrative use of intervals and other melodic devices such as melismas, setting to rhythmic patterns, etc. The accompaniment is investigated, regarding the relationship to and illustrative of the text, complementary to and in support of the vocal part as well as to which extent it supports the song’s formal design. Only the most prominent characteristics of Van Wyk’s highly complex harmonic usage are pointed out. An important aspect of this study is the investigation from a vocal technical point of view into how Van Wyk merged the writing of a vocal melody with his knowledge of the human voice, for instance in Van liefde en verlatenheid as well as in the Petronius songs. Where available, the history of how a song evolved is recorded in great detail, to illustrate the inception of a specific musical idea as well as its development and finalisation, but moreover, to allow the sketches to reveal how tedious (and sometimes even laid-back) the composition process took place most of the time. Van Wyk’s method and tempo of composing can be clearly deduced from the compositional sketches. These conclusions are confirmed and illustrated by his fairly regular dating of his work, and by information such as an address and/or some diary information that he occasionally added. Particulars like these are often included in this study, to shed light on the compositional process as well as on the composer as a human being. To avoid scanning numerous examples of notes, the C1 tot c3 way of spelling the notes is used.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Arnold van Wyk's monumental Night Music is regarded as one of the most important and original South African piano compositions. Night Music offers a legion of untapped timbre possibilities and certainly lends itself to the embodiment of the more expressive and versatile medium of the symphony orchestra. The orchestration of Night Music is an attempt to establish a version which, through utilizing a different medium of presentation, will elucidate Van Wyk's masterpiece and make it more accessible; not as a replacement of the original, but as an enhancement.

Full textThe settlement of investment disputes within the ICSID system is carried out by the ICSID arbitral tribunals which are non-permanent judicial bodies. Every separate case is adjudicated by a different tribunal. The ICSID system, however, does not provide for any institutions similar to the EC Advocate Generals, the EC preliminary rulings, the WTO Appellate Body or to the appeal-like process of the referral to the Grand Chamber of the ECHR capable of securing the homogenous development of the case-law. Moreover, the possibility of appeal of an arbitral award is explicitly excluded within the ICSID system. The present thesis examines the homogeneity of the ICSID jurisprudence in order to ascertain whether the case-law of the separate and not standing ICSID panels proves to be so inconsistent that the ICSID system is in need of reform. The study of the homogeneity of the ICSID jurisprudence concerns the interpretation of identical and similar provisions laid down in international investment treaties as well as of the ICSID Convention itself by the ICSID panels. In particular, it deals with the following topics: (a) Definition of the term “investment” pursuant to the ICSID Convention. (b) Extension of the scope of application of the most-favoured-nation clause to procedural provisions. (c) Jurisdiction of ICSID tribunals over mere violations of an investment contract through broad dispute settlement clauses and umbrella clauses. (d) Standard of compensation for expropriation and distinction between indirect expropriation and state regulation. (e) State of necessity under customary and investment treaty law. This study comes to the conclusion that the ICSID jurisprudence suffers from heterogeneity. Thus, the lack of mechanisms able to secure the consistency of the ICSID case-law constitutes a serious institutional deficit. It is, therefore, urgent to reform the ICSID system immediately, preferably by way of establishing an ICSID appellate authority.

Full textThe environment is a dynamic system, which is always changing and the recognition of its modifications is a crucial feature for life. The RLK is a gene family of receptor quinase in plants that are able to recognize the environment signals, through its extracellular domain, and activating a signal cascade through the post-translational modifications of others protein using the phosphorylation activity from the quinase domain. The Wall-Associated Kinase (WAK) is a subfamily from RLK, with some members identified as associated to the cell wall, suggesting these genes are strong candidates to act as sensors directly linking the extracellular environment to the citoplasm and triggering intracellular signals. The WAK is a large subfamily in rice genome, with 130 genes being described in japonica, compared to the twenty-seven in A. thaliana. The absence of data about this gene subfamily expansion and their implications for plants, justify an evolutionary and structural analysis of A. thaliana and O. sativa members of the WAK subfamily, with a more extensive comparison between genomes of japonica and indica rice subspecies. When the organization of plant WAK domains and conserved residues are compared with those of other eukaryotes protein kinase superfamilies, the identification of two distinct groups of WAKs become evident in Arabidopsis and Rice. One group corresponds to a cluster containing just OsWAK that should have expanded after the monocot-dicot separation, which evolved to form a non-RD kinase class. The other group corresponds to the classical RD-kinases with both AtWAK and OsWAK representatives. Moreover, by comparing OsWAK from indica and japonica subspecies was possible to identify a large divergence in the protein domain features and gene pattern expression. We propose that plant WAKs constitutes two evolutionary related but independent subfamilies: the WAK-RD and the WAK- nonRD. The recognition of this division would contribute to the understanding of WAK function and regulation.

Full textPlants adapt their growth to environmental factors whose gravity is a continuous one. A modification of plant orientation by tilting leads to a straightening response: gravitropism. For aerial parts, plants will adapt their growth upward (negative gravitropism). In trees, straightening is accomplished through asymmetric formation of reaction wood which exhibits modifications in its physicochemical properties. Receptors-like kinases could play a role in both perception and early response to a gravitropic stimulus. Among them, Wall-Associated Kinases (WAKs) are interesting candidates because they are bind to the cell wall. They could detect wall deformations that are supposed to occur after tilting of the stem. We identified and characterized for the first time in a woody species (poplar) the largest WAKs family with 175 members. An extensive study of WAKs transcripts accumulation was carried out to identify genes expressed in woody stem. These genes expressions were analyzed during a kinetic after tilting. WAKs genes were overall weakly expressed but 25% of analyzed genes showed a modulation in their transcript accumulation after tilting. This suggests they could play a role in early events after tilting of poplar stems. Lastly, a deeper study was initiated on PtWAK70 which is localized in young xylem and secondary phloem. We generated molecular tools to identify potentials interactors of PtWAK70 apoplastic part

Full textThe main concern of this work is to contribute to the recent discussion of subjective well-being (SWB) by suggesting a pseudopanel approach for the Happiness Equations. Using the WVS database and following the methodology suggested by Deaton (1985), cohorts of individuals were screened over the past 20 years to estimate the determinants of SWB. Cohorts were aggregated as an interaction of generation, gender and country of birth. It is important to point out that the pseudopanel estimation has several advantages, because it makes possible to control for unobservable cohort\'s fixed effects - which are likely sources of bias. Results indicate that the main determinants of SWB are: health, because subjective well-being has undeniable association to physical well-being; individual or aggregated income, because material goods bring utility, even considering the adaption effect and growing aspirations; employment, because beyond monetary gains, work also ensures self-steem and a higher social status; religion, because reflection, introspection and the belief in a Higher Self bring comfort in hard times, help to overcome adversities and bring hope and meaning to life; sense of freedom, because, in most situations, people prefer to have a sense of control over their choices and also extract utility of the decision process. Finally, considering the recent discussion in the literature about the loss of welfare of former socialist nations in transition to capitalism, the pseudopanel model was adapted to estimate the effect of this change in different generations. Results indicate that older generations were the one who suffered the most significant loss in terms of SWB. The behavior of life satisfaction in these countries assumed a V-shaped format: sudden decline with gradual recovey, which extends up until 2008.

Phillips, Kyle G. "Development of the West Virginia University Small Microgravity Research Facility (WVU SMiRF)." Thesis, West Virginia University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1565521.
Full textWest Virginia University (WVU) has created the Small Microgravity Research Facility (SMiRF) drop tower through a WVU Research Corporation Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (PSCoR) grant on its campus to increase direct access to inexpensive and repeatable reduced gravity research. In short, a drop tower is a tall structure from which experimental payloads are dropped, in a controlled environment, and experience reduced gravity or microgravity (i.e. "weightlessness") during free fall. Currently, there are several methods for conducting scientific research in microgravity including drop towers, parabolic flights, sounding rockets, suborbital flights, NanoSats, CubeSats, full-sized satellites, manned orbital flight, and the International Space Station (ISS). However, none of the aforementioned techniques is more inexpensive or has the capability of frequent experimentation repeatability as drop tower research. These advantages are conducive to a wide variety of experiments that can be inexpensively validated, and potentially accredited, through repeated, reliable research that permits frequent experiment modification and re-testing.
Development of the WVU SMiRF, or any drop tower, must take a systems engineering approach that may include the detailed design of several main components, namely: the payload release system, the payload deceleration system, the payload lifting and transfer system, the drop tower structure, and the instrumentation and controls system, as well as a standardized drop tower payload frame for use by those researchers who cannot afford to spend money on a data acquisition system or frame. In addition to detailed technical development, a budgetary model by which development took place is also presented throughout, summarized, and detailed in an appendix. After design and construction of the WVU SMiRF was complete, initial calibration provided performance characteristics at various payload weights, and full-scale checkout via experimentation provided repeatability characteristics of the facility. Based on checkout instrumentation, Initial repeatability results indicated a drop time of 1.26 seconds at an average of 0.06g, with a standard deviation of 0.085g over the period of the drop, and a peak impact load of 28.72g, with a standard deviation of 10.73g, for a payload weight of 113.8 lbs.
In order to thoroughly check out the facility, a full-scale, fully operational experiment was developed to create an experience that provides a comprehensive perspective of the end-user experience to the developer, so as to incorporate the details that may have been overlooked to the designer and/or developer, in this case, Kyle Phillips. The experiment that was chosen was to determine the effects of die swell, or extrudate swell, in reduced gravity. Die swell is a viscoelastic phenomenon that occurs when a dilatant, or shear-thickening substance is forced through a sufficient constriction, or "die," such that the substance expands, or "swells," downstream of the constriction, even while forming and maintaining a free jet at ambient sea level conditions. A wide range of dilatants exhibit die swell when subjected to the correct conditions, ranging from simple substances such as ketchup, oobleck, and shampoo to complex specially-formulated substances to be used for next generation body armor and high performance braking systems. To date, very few, if any, have researched the stabilizing effect that gravity may have on the phenomenon of die swell. By studying a fluid phenomenon in a reduced gravity environment, both the effect of gravity can be studied and the predominant forces acting on the fluid can be concluded. Furthermore, a hypothesis describing the behavior of a viscoelastic fluid particle employing the viscous Navier-Stokes Equations was derived to attempt to push the fluid mechanics community toward further integrating more fluid behavior into a unified mathematical model of fluid mechanics. While inconclusive in this experiment, several suggestions for future research were made in order to further the science behind die swell, and a comprehensive checkout of the facility and its operations were characterized. As a result of this checkout experience, several details were modified or added to the facility in order for the drop tower to be properly operated and provide the optimal user experience, such that open operation of the WVU SMiRF may begin in the Fall of 2014.

Full textWith the 1999 introduction of IEEE 802.11b, the 2.4 GHz Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) standard, the WLAN market finally began to experience the growth levels that had been expected for so long. Now, 5 GHz solutions, with the IEEE 802.11a standard leading the way, offer higher throughput and more efficient use of the spectrum. Just as the 2.4 GHz band, the 5 GHz band is unlicensed. A common concern to all unlicensed bands is interference between devices using the spectrum. Furthermore, in the 5 GHz band, WLAN cells can interfere with radar systems operating at the same frequencies.
This report describes a software model, WOK, suitable for simulations of IEEE 802.11a WLANs operating in various environments and under various ambient conditions. The WOK model can be configured extensively with respect to topology, traffic behavior, channel models, signal attenuation, interference sources and radar systems.
Further, the concepts of Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) and link adaptation are explored in the context of the IEEE 802.11a standard. DFS aims to avoid channels occupied by radar systems and link adaptation aims to maximize the throughput based on current ambient conditions. A DFS algorithm and a link adaptation algorithm are implemented at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer and evaluated using the WOK model.
