Abstract:
We discuss from a practical point of view a number of issues involved in writing distributed Internet and WWW applications using LP/CLP systems. We describe PiLLoW, a public-domain Internet and WWW programming library for LP/CLP systems that we have designed to simplify the process of writing such applications. PiLLoW provides facilities for accessing documents and code on the WWW; parsing, manipulating and generating HTML and XML structured documents and data; producing HTML forms; writing form handlers and CGI-scripts; and processing HTML/XML templates. An important contribution of PiLLoW is to model HTML/XML code (and, thus, the content of WWW pages) as terms. The PiLLoW library has been developed in the context of the Ciao Prolog system, but it has been adapted to a number of popular LP/CLP systems, supporting most of its functionality. We also describe the use of concurrency and a high-level model of client-server interaction, Ciao Prolog's active modules, in the context of WWW programming. We propose a solution for client-side downloading and execution of Prolog code, using generic browsers. Finally, we also provide an overview of related work on the topic.

Abstract:
Now days, the Word Wide Web (WWW) covers most of the information channels across the world and is the cheapest resource to publish the corporate as well as individual information. The key advantage of WWW is that the published information instantly becomes available around the globe. Since the information load on the Internet is increasing day by day, therefore, it is causing serious troubles for the researchers and scientists to retrieve the targeted and relevant information from the huge bulk of data. While surfing the Internet, precious time of researchers and scientists is wasted due to browsing of the irrelevant and unnecessary material. Such an approach of information retrieval results in overlooking the important contents. In this paper, we look into the elementary components of a customized search engine in order to develop an agent-based search engine tool that may help researchers and scientists to find their desired information in an efficient manner and with minimal clicks of pointer. Through this tool, the researchers and scientists will be able to find a summarized report against their search phrase along with the search details, which will provide them a solid background to their research subject based on history available on the WWW. The important aspect of this search engine is that it retrieves the subject-specific material from the designated websites in accordance with the user-defined criteria.

Abstract:
Segmentation of WWW pages or page division on di erent semantics blocks is one of the disciplines of information extraction. Master's thesis deals with Vision-based Page Segmentation - VIPS method, which consist in division based on visual properties of page's elements. The method is given in context of other prominent segmentation procedures. In this work, the key steps, that this method consist of are shown and described on examples. For VIPS method it is necessary to cooperate with WWW pages rendering engine in order to obtain Document Object Model of page. The paper presents and describes four most important engines for Java programming language. The output of this work is implementation of VIPS algorithm just in Java language with usage of CSSBox core. The original algorithm implementation from Microsoft's labs is presented. The di erent development stages of library implementing VIPS method and my approach to it's solution are described. In the end of this work the work's outcome is demonstrated on several pages segmentation.

Abstract:
Segmentation of web pages is one of the disciplines of information extraction. It allows to divide the page into different semantic blocks. This thesis deals with the segmentation as such and also with the implementation of the segmentation method. In this paper, we describe various examples of methods such as VIPS, DOM PS etc. There is a theoretical description of the chosen method and also the FITLayout Framework, which will be extended by this method. The implementation of the chosen method is also described in detail. The implementation description is focused on describing the different problems we had to solve. We also describe the testing that helped to reveal some weaknesses. The conclusion is a summary of the results and possible ideas for extending this work.
