Abstract:
Young people are distinguished as a social group with the capacity to drive new behaviours and understandings in today’s society. However, most young people consider that people in charge of decision-making processes are not addressing their concerns. The WYRED project proposes a framework for citizen science based on a technological ecosystem to promote the transfer of perspectives, ideas, and knowledge among young people and decision-makers on issues related to the digital society. The work goal is to analyse the model proposed through a citizen science case study centred in identifying the ideas and opinions of children and young people between 7 and 30 years old, concerning gender stereotypes on the Internet. A total of 69 children and young people from Belgium, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom have interacted for two weeks in a private space guaranteed by the defined ecosystem. The results of the analysis of the interaction between young people and facilitators (with different profiles: educators, researchers and decision-makers) demonstrate that the use of technological ecosystems to sustain the development of citizen science projects allows for the improvement of knowledge transfer processes between children and young people with stakeholders, as well as the analysis of these processes.

Abstract:
Many scholars have written about how Terry Pratchett has represented the witches in his novel, Wyrd Sisters (1989), that were originally used in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth (1623). However, in their studies of the two works, many of these scholars illustrate how both Shakespeare and Pratchett present the witches’ personalities and outward appearances. Additionally, there has also been some literature on the representation of Pratchett’s witches and some compared them with Macbeth’s three weird witches in relation to their appearance, personalities and external characteristics in general. At the same time, there is shortage in the studies that focus on the intention of the witches and the way they use their authority in both works. The study depicts the good and moral intentions of Pratchett’s three witches in Wyrd Sisters. This can be seen in the way they use their authority and influence to give back the throne to King Verence’s son and save the kingdom. It could also be seen in the way the three Wyrd Witches deal with Felmet and his Lady, despite what they do to them. There has not been much literature written about Pratchett’s representation of the witches’ intentions and influence in their plot to help King Verence, who represents Shakespeare’s King Duncan, regain his throne rather than fight against his reign as the three witches did in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth (1623).

Abstract:
Freshwater microbial contamination has become a worldwide problem, but fecal indicator organism (FIO) data are lacking in many catchments and large-scale management is expensive. Therefore, a model that can assist in spatial localization to simulate microbial risk maps and Critical Source Areas (CSAs) is needed. This study aims to generate a predicted risk of microbial contamination in Kent and Leven, Northumberland, and East Suffolk based on the ArcMap hydrological tool using the land use parameters in the Wyre and Yealm catchments. Then, this study will compare the value obtained with the E. coli concentration data (observational risk) in order to evaluate whether land cover weightings are transferable between different catchments and provide microbial risk guidelines for ungauged catchments. In the research, the East Suffolk catchment showed strong fitting with actual values in the rainy and dry seasons after using the predictive values weighted by Wyre and Yealm, respectively. Specifically, as for the models with Yealm land cover weightings, the results show that the adjusted R2 in the rainy season for East Suffolk is 0.916 (p < 0.01) while the adjusted R2 values in the dry season is 0.969 (p < 0.01). As for models with Wyre land cover weightings, the adjusted R2 values (rainy season) is 0.872 (p < 0.01), while the adjusted R2 values (dry season) is 0.991 (p < 0.01). This indicates that this spatial model can effectively predict the risk of fecal microbial contamination in the East Suffolk catchment. Second, this research believes that the land cover weightings are more transferable in catchments that have close geographical locations or similar land cover compositions. This paper makes recommendations for future catchment management based on the results obtained.

Abstract:
Abstract What if giving offerings matters not because of beliefs about appeasing the gods or the powers of nature, but because it gives people a sense of relatedness with the world that inspires them to care for it? Practices dismissed as outmoded superstition may play a critical role in shaping people’s sense of what matters and how we should comport ourselves. Making toasts, giving gifts, and making offerings matter to contemporary Heathens, and these practices contribute to their sense of how they should relate with others, including ecological relations. In Wyrd Ecology, Barbara Jane Davy presents an ethnography of contemporary Heathen gifting rituals in Canada that shows how such practices can contribute to the development of ecological conscience. Based on two years of participant observation and interviews with practitioners, Wyrd Ecology is well-grounded both in first-hand experience and the academic study of ritual, religion, and ecology. Giving gifts and expressing thanks in ritual in this community inspires in participants a sense of gratitude and a desire to give in turn. Among these Heathens this gratitude and felt sense of obligation extends beyond human relations to include all relations in the more than human world, or what Heathens understand as “wyrd.” Wyrd Ecology is the first ethnography of Heathen gifting rituals, the first study on contemporary Heathenry and environmentalism, and the first published in-depth study of Heathenry in Canada. It offers a unique interpretation of how ritual practices can inspire ethical and ecological behavior.

Abstract Reflecting on double-insider research methods and the significance of findings about the role of participation in gifting rituals in the development of ecological conscience, the concluding chapter discusses limitations and wider implications of the work in social ecological systems change. The positionality of the researcher and bias are discussed in depth. A potential for social change through ritual practice is posited. Ritual provides a liminal space for imaginative play in the adjacent possible of consumer society, presenting an alternative to business as usual. Gifting rituals that entail making offerings to nonhuman others may effectively include them in participants’ moral community and support pro-environmental behavior.

Abstract:
Abstract An ethnographic vignette describes the procession of Nerthus, a power of nature identified with the Ottawa Valley by the local Heathen community at Raven’s Knoll in eastern Ontario. Discussion of historical inspiration for the contemporary event is interwoven with the ethnographic description, reflecting community introspection about historical practices, the meaning of sacrifice, and the importance of making offerings in contemporary practice. The role of the offering of a “breadman” to Nerthus in building connections between the contemporary Heathen community, the past, and the bioregion in an inclusive moral community is explored. Ritual infelicity, or what goes awry in ritual, is shown to contribute to practitioners’ sense of how ritual should be conducted and the importance of giving offerings in maintaining good relations.

Abstract:
Abstract A qualitative description of the environmental behavior of the contemporary Heathen community in eastern and southwestern Ontario suggests that practices of making ritual offerings in the context of relational ontology can support a pro-environmental way of life. While Heathens may not identify themselves as environmental activists or engage in overt political activities, their actions show some preferences for ethical consumption. Practitioners’ behavior with regard to political activism, consumerism, thrifting, transportation, animals, food, and giving offerings are discussed. Survey data suggest that Heathen ritual practices are associated with increased ethical commitments and that raising pro-environmental values in ritual practices supports pro-environmental behavior. The impact of socioeconomic factors such as income and education levels on environmental behavior is discussed.

Abstract An ethnographic vignette describes the contemporary Heathen ritual of Dísablót, a ritual of giving offerings to female ancestors, in southwestern Ontario. Historical practices that inspire contemporary practice are discussed with reference to Icelandic saga literature and Norse studies, and in relation to Mother’s Night and other rituals devoted to female ancestors. This is followed by an interpretation of Dísablót in relation to ancestor veneration more generally in the Heathen community in Ontario. The role of mortality salience in ancestor veneration is discussed in relation to the development of an expansive and inclusive moral community that includes the dead, future generations, and nonhumans more generally in the more-than-human world.

Abstract An ethnographic vignette describes the contemporary Heathen ritual of high sumbel, which entails making toasts and giving gifts, at Raven’s Knoll in eastern Ontario. A brief discussion of the historical inspiration for this ritual follows and then an interpretation of its contemporary expression and development. The meaning of “wyrd” is discussed in depth with reference to historical sources, metaphorical associations, and the interpretations of contemporary Heathens. The significance of these meanings for Heathen metaphysics is explained in showing how relational ontology supports the development of ethical sensibility. The meaning of the sumbel ritual and its impact on participants and their relationships are explained with reference to Levinasian ethical theory, gift economies, and relational ontology.

Abstract Key terms such as “ritual,” “relational ontology,” and “wyrd” are defined and the researcher, research community, and religious tradition are introduced. The history of Heathenry is briefly discussed, including the separation of inclusive (or universalist) and racist (or folkish) developments, and the relation of Heathenry to contemporary Paganism more broadly. The research is situated in relevant literature on ritual, behavioral economics, relational ontology and the “new animism,” gift economies, and terror management theory. Interpretive lenses for analysis of Heathen gifting rituals are identified. Methods are identified as self-reflexive participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and an international survey. The positionality of the researcher is identified.
