Abstract:
This study discusses the grammatical function of the question words and the internal structure of interrogative sentence in Minangkabau language. The study of this interrogative sentence structure applies X-bar theory as one of the generative syntax subtheories. The data is gained from the interview of Minangkabau language native speaker and analysed by using the distributional method. The result of the analysis shows that the question words for wh-question has two grammatical functions, specifier and complement. For yes-no question, the question word “iyonyo” has one grammatical function, that is complement. The internal structure of interrogative sentence in Minangkabau language is constructed by specifier, complement, and adverb. Key words: interrogative sentence, question word, Minangkabau language

We propose to search for a tetraquark candidate [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text] or ΛΛKK*. The existence of tetraquark state [Formula: see text] was predicted in the literature due to specific diquark effective degrees of freedom inside hadrons. In order to understand the underlying dynamics for exotic hadrons, a search for the tetraquark [Formula: see text] is strongly recommended. We make an estimate of the production rate of [Formula: see text] in an effective lagrangian theory. The proposed reaction involves two Λ production, of which the narrow widths make it a great advantage in the analysis of the final state missing mass spectrum.

Abstract:
AbstractThis research was conducted to get the results and data to find and dissect the coordinative sentence in Serdang Malay Language (SML) by using the X-bar theory. This research also aims to prove that the structure in SML and Indonesian have no different. Both based on sentence patterns and their construction. This research uses a matching method that combines Indonesian language and SML. So, to prove the inner structure contained in SML that uses the X-bar theory, it is compared to Indonesian. The object of the research that was examined by the coordinative sentence. This coordinative sentence certainly has coordinative conjunctions in it. There are various coordinative conjunctions. Some use the words "that", "if", "but", "and", and other coordinative conjunctions. Coordinative conjunction in Indonesian is compared to coordinative conjunction in SML. The dissecting tool for these sentences in SML is the X-bar theory. This X-bar theory was first done by Chomsky. In X-bar theory, the lexical category of a word becomes the core of phrases, clauses, or sentences. The lexical category of verbs is the core of verb phrases, nouns are the core of noun phrases, the adjective is the core of the adjective phrase, inflection is the core of the inflectional phrase.

Abstract:
AbstractFor a Hausdorff topologized semilattice X its Lawson number$$\bar{\Lambda }(X)$$ Λ ¯ ( X ) is the smallest cardinal $$\kappa $$ κ such that for any distinct points $$x,y\in X$$ x , y ∈ X there exists a family $$\mathcal U$$ U of closed neighborhoods of x in X such that $$|\mathcal U|\le \kappa $$ | U | ≤ κ and $$\bigcap \mathcal U$$ ⋂ U is a subsemilattice of X that does not contain y. It follows that $$\bar{\Lambda }(X)\le \bar{\psi }(X)$$ Λ ¯ ( X ) ≤ ψ ¯ ( X ) , where $$\bar{\psi }(X)$$ ψ ¯ ( X ) is the smallest cardinal $$\kappa $$ κ such that for any point $$x\in X$$ x ∈ X there exists a family $$\mathcal U$$ U of closed neighborhoods of x in X such that $$|\mathcal U|\le \kappa $$ | U | ≤ κ and $$\bigcap \mathcal U=\{x\}$$ ⋂ U = { x } . We prove that a compact Hausdorff semitopological semilattice X is Lawson (i.e., has a base of the topology consisting of subsemilattices) if and only if $$\bar{\Lambda }(X)=1$$ Λ ¯ ( X ) = 1 . Each Hausdorff topological semilattice X has Lawson number $$\bar{\Lambda }(X)\le \omega $$ Λ ¯ ( X ) ≤ ω . On the other hand, for any infinite cardinal $$\lambda $$ λ we construct a Hausdorff zero-dimensional semitopological semilattice X such that $$|X|=\lambda $$ | X | = λ and $$\bar{\Lambda }(X)=\bar{\psi }(X)=\mathrm {cf}(\lambda )$$ Λ ¯ ( X ) = ψ ¯ ( X ) = cf ( λ ) . A topologized semilattice X is called (i) $$\omega $$ ω -Lawson if $$\bar{\Lambda }(X)\le \omega $$ Λ ¯ ( X ) ≤ ω ; (ii) complete if each non-empty chain $$C\subseteq X$$ C ⊆ X has $$\inf C\in {\overline{C}}$$ inf C ∈ C ¯ and $$\sup C\in {\overline{C}}$$ sup C ∈ C ¯ . We prove that for any complete subsemilattice X of an $$\omega $$ ω -Lawson semitopological semilattice Y, the partial order $$\le _X=\{(x,y)\in X\times X:xy=x\}$$ ≤ X = { ( x , y ) ∈ X × X : x y = x } of X is closed in $$Y\times Y$$ Y × Y and hence X is closed in Y. This implies that for any continuous homomorphism $$h:X\rightarrow Y$$ h : X → Y from a complete topologized semilattice X to an $$\omega $$ ω -Lawson semitopological semilattice Y the image h(X) is closed in Y.

Abstract:
I start by describing the framework of studies that led to Chomsky’s idea of the genetic component of human language. I then examine his contribution to modern linguistics, the Universal Grammar Theory and X-bar theory. A special place is reserved to John Tooby and Leda Cosmides’ introduction to the 1992 volume The Adapted Mind. I later introduce Pinker’s idea of the language instinct, and then proceed to describe his theory of the language of the mind. I conclude my essay by describing the most recent development in the realm of cognitive studies of language acquisition, usage-based linguistics. The description of the different theories follows the chronological order.

Abstract:
The theory of the abyssal abiotic petroleum origin considers oil and natural gas to begenerated in the Earth’s upper mantle. Hydrocarbons migrate further through the deep faults into the Earth’s crust, where they can form oil and gas deposits in any kind of rock in any kind of structural position. Until recently one of the main obstacles for further development of this theory has been the lack of the data covering processes of generation and transformations of hydrocarbons. Experimental data, presented in this thesis, confirms the possibility of hydrocarbons formation from mantle inorganic compounds (water, Fe, CaCO3 or graphite) at temperature and pressure of the upper mantle (1500 K and 5 GPa). Experiments were carried out in CONAC high pressure device and multianvil apparatus BARS. Compositions of received gas mixtures were similar to natural gas. Quantity of hydrocarbons depended on the cooling regime of reaction mixture under pressure. Slow cooling favored higher quantity. We found that donor of carbon (CaCO3 or graphite) determines formation of “dry” (methane-rich) gas or “wet” (light hydrocarbons-rich) gas. Experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cells showed that methane and ethane partially react under upper mantle thermobaric conditions (2-5 GPa, 1000-1500 K) to form mixture of hydrocarbons: methane, ethane, propane and n-butane – main compounds of natural gas. Similarity of final product mixture obtained from methane and ethane means thermodynamic stability of hydrocarbons in the thermobaric conditions of the upper mantle and equilibrium character of the observed processes.

Abstract:
In 2002, a Microsoft-MIT iCampus effort was initiated to generate methods and tools which accelerate the process by which students and researchers acquire perspective and skill in compliant mechanism design: (1) Experience and skill: A synthesis tool, CoMeT, was developed as a means for researchers and students to gain experience and skill in working with old (education) and new (research) compliant mechanisms. The simulator is based on compliance theory and screw theory. (2) Perspective: A framework, the 5 Fs, was developed to help designers form a holistic perspective on compliant mechanisms. A “big picture” view helps them systematically identify and link the important elements of a compliant mechanism problem. This opens to door for them to properly conceptualize, model and fabricate these mechanisms. In this paper we discuss the work of early compliant mechanism/instrument designers to gain insight into how they thought about, designed and taught others about compliant mechanisms. We explain how their work has influenced the development of our framework and simulator. We then show results obtained by using the framework and simulator at MIT in: (1) Compliant mechanism research: Generation of a compliant mechanism for an R&D 100 award winning, six-axis Nanomanipulator. (2) Compliant mechanism education: Use within student projects to design two devices: A compliant x-y Nanomanipulator with 30×30 μm range and a MEMS accelerometer. Both devices are designed, fabricated and tested in a semester-long class. The paper closes with an appendix which highlights the main steps of a CoMeT study on the screw axis characteristics of a four bar compliant mechanism. The CoMeT simulator and a CoMeT User’s Guide have been made publicly available for academic use at psdam.mit.edu.

Abstract:
Abstract Granular materials are one of the most important materials in several industries such as civil engineering, agriculture, and energy production. They are a collection of distinct macroscopic particles. Although these materials appear very simple to be described, they exhibit highly different mechanical behavior under quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions. Traditionally, glass beads have been considered as a benchmark granular material for the fundamental understanding of the mechanics of granular materials under complex mechanical loadings. In this study, we intend to characterize the compressive behavior of glass beads under confinement using in-situ X-ray micro-computed tomography at low (quasi-static) and high strain (dynamic) rates. At high strain rates, samples with similar bulk densities to the quasi-static samples are compressed using a long split Hopkinson pressure bar and later imaged with the tomography system to acquire their volumetric images. In the case of low strain rates, a similar sample is compressed, and subsequently, its volumetric images are captured at the same strain level as the dynamically compressed samples using the long split Hopkinson pressure bar. The volumetric images for each case are then analyzed to determine three-dimensional morphologies and to investigate and compare the damage and crushing characteristics of the glass beads at quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions.

Abstract:
The state of Qatar is suffering from its harsh environment and coastal conditions, which stand for most of the year. As a result, steel-reinforced concrete structures are subjected to rapid corrosion and deterioration. Therefore, there is a necessity to replace the conventional steel reinforcement by fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) bars. Apart from FRP bars corrosion resistance, their strength to weight ratio is higher than steel reinforcement, which made the FRP, bars a viable alternative to steel reinforcement. Continuous concrete beams are commonly used elements in structures such as parking garages and overpasses. In such structures, forces could be distributed between the critical sections after cracking. This phenomenon is called moment redistribution. It reduces the congested rebars in connections and enhances the ductility of the members. However, the linear-elastic behaviour of FRP materials makes the ability of continuous beams to redistribute loads and moments questionable. This study aims to investigate the capability of moment redistribution of basalt fiber reinforced concrete (BFRC) continuous beams reinforced with basalt FRP (BFRP) bars. Eleven reinforced concrete (RC) continuous beams of 200 x 300 x 4000 mm were tested up to failure under fivepoint loading. The main investigated parameters were the reinforcement ratio (0.6rb, 1.0rb, 1.8rb and 2.8rb; where rb is the balanced reinforcement ratio), stirrups spacing (80 and 120 mm) and volume fractions of Basalt-macro fibers (BMF) (0.75 and 1.5%). A parametric study was then conducted using a validated finite element (FE) model to extend the investigated parameters that may affect the moment redistribution of RC continuous beams. It was concluded that moment redistribution occurs in beams that have at least a ratio of bottom to top reinforcement of 0.3.

Abstract:
Non-invasive instruments (kVp meters) are widely used in radiology with diagnostic and guidance systems. Placed in the x-ray beam, they combine detectors and filters, to determine X-ray tube voltage and exposure time, which are the most important quantities in radiology and diagnostic quality control. Calibration of these instruments were limited by reference bench capabilities. General Electric Medical System France and LNE (The national metrology institute in France) have developed a reference bench for the characterization of kVp meters. The set up includes a fast high voltage generator associated with its internal measuring systems and an X-ray tube. The measurements are compared with an invasive reference standard. The set-up is installed in a Faraday cage, precautions have been taken in order to carry out accurate measurements and special adaptations have been made to avoid stray capacitances, which affect the dynamic performance of the generator. Results have shown a good agreement with the internal measuring system of the generator but the kVp meters have shown both good and bad results depending the exposure time, the current and the positioning.

Abstract:
Abstract In this set of experiments, the versatility of the University of Kent's light gas gun was utilised to obtain a selection of corroborative data regarding the formation and impact of metallic gunshot residues onto high purity silicon wafers. The results from the two experiments are presented. The first experiment investigated how the formation of metallic residues varied as gunshot residue analogues traversed through air under a range of pressures from 0.056 millibar (5.6 Pa) to 1 bar (100 kPa), using solely the energy released during primer ignition; the second involved firing a metallic powder mix of pre-determined composition (via a split-sabot) under vacuum at two velocities- 500 ms-1 and 2000 ms-1. This ensured that there was no ignition or heating of the powders, unlike the first experiment, and so the morphology of the particles collected would be solely due to impact. The residues on the substrates were then analysed using a cold Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) detector. By separating the ignition process of the primers from the residue impacts, it allows for a closer look into the formation of these particles and helps determine whether their varied morphologies are due to the heating caused during the activation and combustion of the primer or whether its due to impact melting. This information can aid in the understanding of metallic particle formation in different pressure environments and give insight into the physical state of firearm residues when they impact a surface. Hydrocode modelling was also incorporated to corroborate the results observed during these experiments and gave results which mimicked the experimental data.

Abstract:
Abstract Liquid sprays play a key role in many engineering processes and the dynamics at the nozzle exit have a significant impact on the downstream spray characteristics. However, visualizing the spray in this region is extremely challenging because, under most operating conditions, the spray is optically dense. High intensity white beam X-rays, like those found at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory, can be used to produce time-resolved measurements of the liquid-gas structures in the spray near-field region. In this study, high temporal and spatial resolution X-ray images were acquired at the 7-BM beamline at APS of an atomization process using a canonical airblast atomizer consisting of coaxial liquid and gas jets. Unique flow structures were observed under various operating conditions, including bag, ligament, wisp, droplet, and air bubble formation, as well as hollowing of the liquid core into a crown at the liquid needle exit. Conditions where these structures exist are presented and their impact on spray formation are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Measurements of fuel injectors via non-destructive X-ray techniques can provide unique insights about an injector’s internal surface. Using real measured geometry rather than nominal design geometry in computational fluid dynamics simulations can improve the accuracy of the numerical models dramatically. Recent work from the authors investigated the influence of the injector design on the internal flow development and occurrence of cavitation in a production multi-hole heavy-duty diesel injector operating with a straight-run gasoline for gasoline compression ignition (GCI) applications. This was achieved by evaluating a series of design parameters which showed that the intensity and duration of cavitation structures could be mitigated by acting on certain injector parameters such as K-factor, orifice inlet ellipticity, and sac-to-orifice radius of curvature. In the present work, the findings from the previous parametric study were combined to generate two attempts at improving the injector design and numerically evaluate their ability to suppress cavitation inside the orifices at three levels of injection pressure (1000, 1500, and 2500 bar), while operating with the same high-volatility gasoline fuel. Qualitative and quantitative analyses showed that, compared to the results obtained with the original X-ray scanned geometry, the improved designs were able to prevent fuel vapor formation at the two lowest injection pressures and avoid super-cavitation at the higher pressure. It was shown that these results were due to the strong influence that the orifice shape can have on the pressure and fuel vapor volume fraction distributions within the orifices. The informed design choices proposed in this study can therefore be vital for extending the durability and reliability of heavy-duty injectors for GCI applications.
