Abstract:
ABSTRACT Be X-ray binaries (BeXRBs) consist of rapidly rotating Be stars with neutron star (NS) companions accreting from the circumstellar emission disc. We compare the observed population of BeXRBs in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with simulated populations of BeXRB-like systems produced with the compas population synthesis code. We focus on the apparently higher minimal mass of Be stars in BeXRBs than in the Be population at large. Assuming that BeXRBs experienced only dynamically stable mass transfer, their mass distribution suggests that at least $\sim 30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the mas

AbstractIt is well known that X-ray luminosity (Lx) originating from high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is tightly correlated with the host galaxy’s star formation rate (SFR). We explore this connection using a sample representative of the star-formation activity in the local Universe (Star-Formation Reference Survey; SFRS) along with a comprehensive set of star-formation (radio, FIR, 24μm, 8 μm, Hα, UV, SED fitting) and stellar mass (K-band, 3.6 μm, SED fitting) indicators, and Chandra observations. We investigate the Lx–SFR and Lx– stellar mass (M*) scaling relations down to sub-galactic scale

Abstract This paper describes a facile way to prepare a photophysically inert sensor substrate. Stannic oxide encapsulated silica nanoparticles with average diameters between 30 and 70 nm have been prepared by one-pot reverse-phase emulsion methodology. The constituents and core/shell morphology of the nanoparticles were demonstrated by electron microscopic technology, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction was employed to provide additional constitutional and structural information. It has been shown that nanoparticles prepared by this me

Introduction. A promising direction in mineral processing development is the combination of preconcentration and deep processing. For that purpose, X-ray fluorescence separation (XFS) is highly effectively used. A feature of the technology is the availability of the procedures of crushing and screening of the initial rock into machine and unsortable classes, and separation in machine classes. The efficiency of preconcentration complex depends on the quality of granulometric composition forming procedures. Methodology. Context. Although timing variations in close binary systems have been studied for a long time, their underlying causes are still unclear. A possible explanation is the so-called Applegate mechanism, where a strong, variable magnetic field can periodically change the gravitational quadrupole moment of a stellar component, thus causing observable period changes. One of the systems exhibiting such strong orbital variations is the RS CVn binary HR 1099, whose activity cycle has been studied by various authors via photospheric and chromospheric activity indicators, resulting in contradicting period

Difficulty in interpreting X-rays following carpal injury emphasizes the importance of clinical assessment in diagnosing scaphoid fractures. The classical sign of tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox is not specific and leads to many unnecessary out-patient reviews. A prospective comparison was made between anatomical snuffbox, scaphoid tubercle and scaphoid compression tenderness as indicators of scaphoid fracture in 221 patients with suspected scaphoid injury. Swelling was determined by measuring the difference in circumference at the wrist joint to compare between fracture and soft tissue
