Abstract:

Published as a novel in 1973 and released as a film in 1974, Ousmane Sembene’s Xala offers his readers as well as his audience the most detailed display of one of his prominent themes: the role of women in marriage. This article examines how Sembene skilfully uses both literature and film to express the same theme and, in so doing, exploits each medium’s strong points to complement each other in order to reinforce the message he wishes to convey. Sembene, the modern griot, knows that life is complex, and, in his written work, he includes exceptions and nuances, which he is unable to highlight in his film due to time constraints. In so doing, his novel reflects a more detailed depiction of reality. By contrast, in his cinematic version, he focuses on certain aspects of the novel and amplifies them with the aid of cinematic techniques. As a result, he transcends the abstract and superficial distinctions made between the traditional woman and the westernised woman to create a more nuanced and striking message where not all women are described as being victims of polygamy and some of them go as far as opposing it. He shows the audience the negative as well as the positive aspects of polygamy, thus attaining his aim, which is to educate his people.

Faat Kine (2000), c’est l’anti-Xala (1974) : ce film tardif semble complètement renverser les structures et la pensée à l’oeuvre dans la production antérieure, et l’on peut se demander pourquoi Sembène rompt ainsi avec sa critique du capitalisme. Dans Faat Kine, l’auteur aborde en effet les impératifs féministes dans le cadre d’une économie libérale qui limite la libération à une égalité consentie dans un imaginaire phallocentrique : en somme, « un féminisme à l’ancienne ». De façon plus générale, Faat Kine comprend un élément mélodramatique, et dans ce cadre, une opposition binaire et manichéenne entre le bien et le mal qui ne fait pas dans le détail mais verse plutôt dans le déterminisme : nous sommes exposés au tableau misérabiliste d’un ordre injuste, mais cela permet en dernier ressort de prendre conscience de notre opposition à la patriarchie : ce sont là tout à la fois la finalité et les limites de l’idéologie du film.

Abstract:

African literature is famous for the depiction of a type of politics that tends to reflect the reality on the ground, spanning a panorama of incompetent leadership to gross political corruption. As a result, writing about politics in Africa tends to be a risky undertaking as many creative writers who criticize political leadership and corrupt practices in their works end up being jailed. Using contemporary African literature to discuss the postcolonial African Political State, this paper explores the nature of the state in West Africa in three novels, Chinua Achebe’s A Man of the People, Anthills of the Savannah and Sembene Ousmane’s Xala. Using the metaphor of an impotent masculinity, this paper argues that the political State in Africa is a failed one. From the dawn of independence to the era of democracy, the political state in Africa has had to grapple with failed leadership, corruption, injustice, the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor etc., and it appears that these problems are becoming more.

Manuel Rodríguez Sáenz de Pedroso fue un importante mercader riojano del siglo XVIII en Nueva España. Tuvo inversiones comerciales en la ruta transpacífica y transatlántica. Sin embargo, la historiografía ha dado cuenta de él por sus negocios en el cultivo del maguey y comercio del pulque, del cual fue pionero por convertir ese cultivo casi silvestre en uno de finca entre 1732 y 1750. En 1749 la Corona española lo reconoció como el nuevo poseedor del título de conde de San Bartolomé de Jala. En 1750 vinculó el tercio y quinto de sus bienes en la fundación de un mayorazgo que años más tarde desataría un pleito entre él y algunos miembros de su familia al cambiar la sucesión en la posesión del mismo. Las redes de poder que estableció le permitieron tener una relación cercana con el virrey primer conde de Revillagigedo.

Dans un premier temps, cet article brosse brièvement une biographie intellectuelle de Sembène Ousmane pour faire ressortir les rapports entre sa production et sa trajectoire de sujet sénégalais, Ousmane Sembène de son vrai nom, devenu le romancier et cinéaste Sembène Ousmane. Du même coup, à partir d’une lecture de l’évolution des titres de ses romans du français au wolof, du Docker noir (1956) à Xala (1973), il tente d’expliquer son passage de l’écrit à l’écran. Dans un deuxième temps, ce texte montre la cohérence interne de l’oeuvre cinématographique de La Noire de... (1966) à Moolaadé (2004), en passant par Mandabi (1968), Ceddo (1976) ou Camp de Thiaroye (1988). Ces films qui, tous, mettent en scène une crise suite à une rencontre avec l’Autre (ou d’autres), plus spécifiquement l’irruption d’un ou des éléments étrangers dans un corps social jamais un mais multiple, divers dans un procès de confrontation/transformation. Cette double contre-ethnographie, portrait de Soi et portrait de l’Autre, ni Soi ni l’Autre n’étant un, mais multiple, divers/divisé est une poéthique (poétique et éthique) liée à un engagement personnel de l’écrivain-cinéaste pour une redéfinition de l’image de l’Afrique sur les écrans. En ce sens, son travail se fait notamment, du moins implicitement, contre un certain cinéma ethnographique dont Jean Rouch a été la figure de proue avec des documentaires comme Les Maîtres fous (1954) ou Mammy Water (1966).

The present paper covers in a comprehensive manner the formation of the Cu-based Cu-Zr-Al bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). Composition optimization for BMG formation is realized by using an “e/a-variant criterion”. This criterion is incorporated into the ternary phase diagram by a straight composition line, which is defined by linking a specific binary composition to the third element. There e/a-variant composition lines are constructed: (Cu9Zr4)1-xAl, (Cu61.8Zr38.2)1-xAlx and (Cu56Zr44)1-xAlx, where Cu9Zr4, Cu61.8Zr38.2 and Cu56Zr44 are specific cluster compositions in the Cu-rich Cu-Zr binary system. No Cu-based BMGs are obtained in the composition line (Cu9Zr4)1-xAlx using our suction casting techniques, while BMGs are obtained within an e/a span from 1.24 to 1.3 and from 1.28 to 1.36 respectively along the other two lines (Cu61.8Zr38.2)1-xAlx and (Cu56Zr44)1-xAlx. Thermal analysis results indicate that the BMGs on every composition line manifest increased thermal stability and glass forming ability (GFA) with increasing e/a ratios. The maximum appears in Cu58.1Zr35.9Al6 with the e/a value of 1.3, which belongs to the (Cu61.8Zr38.2)1-xAlx series. The characteristic thermal parameters of this BMG are Tg = 760K, Tg/Tm = 0.659 and Tg/Tl = 0.648, which are all superior to those reported for the known Cu55Zr40Al5 BMG.

Abstract:

Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (X. citri) is a plant pathogenic bacterium causing citrus canker disease. The xanA gene encodes a phosphoglucomutase/phosphomannomutase protein that is a key enzyme required for the synthesis of lipopolysaccharides and exopolysaccharides in Xanthomonads. In this work, firstly we isolated a xanA transposon mutant (xanA::Tn5) and analyzed its phenotypes as biofilm formation, xanthan gum production, and pathogenesis on the sweet orange host. Moreover, to confirm the xanA role in the impaired phenotypes we further produced a non-polar deletion mutant (ΔxanA) and performed the complementation of both xanA mutants. In addition, we analyzed the percentages of the xanthan gum monosaccharides produced by X. citri wild-type and xanA mutant. The mutant strain had higher ratios of mannose, galactose, and xylose and lower ratios of rhamnose, glucuronic acid, and glucose than the wild-type strain. Such changes in the saccharide composition led to the reduction of xanthan yield in the xanA deficient strain, affecting also other important features in X. citri, such as biofilm formation and sliding motility. Moreover, we showed that xanA::Tn5 caused no symptoms on host leaves after spraying, a method that mimetics the natural infection condition. These results suggest that xanA plays an important role in the epiphytical stage on the leaves that is essential for the successful interaction with the host, including adaptive advantage for bacterial X. citri survival and host invasion, which culminates in pathogenicity.

Abstract:

This paper addresses the problem of task allocation in real-time distributed systems with the goal of maximizing the system reliability, which has been shown to be NP-hard. We take account of the deadline constraint to formulate this problem and then propose an algorithm called chaotic adaptive simulated annealing (XASA) to solve the problem. Firstly, XASA begins with chaotic optimization which takes a chaotic walk in the solution space and generates several local minima; secondly XASA improves SA algorithm via several adaptive schemes and continues to search the optimal based on the results of chaotic optimization. The effectiveness of XASA is evaluated by comparing with traditional SA algorithm and improved SA algorithm. The results show that XASA can achieve a satisfactory performance of speedup without loss of solution quality.

Abstract:

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (XALD) typically presents as a childhood cerebral demyelinating form, as an adult-onset adrenomyeloneuropathy or as adrenocortical insufficiency. Cerebral demyelination presenting in adolescence is unusual. We present an 17-year-old boy with adolescent-onset XALD initially manifesting with slowly progressive psychiatric symptoms. He was initially diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and an acute psychosis. However, he was ultimately diagnosed with XALD based on his clinical course, neuroimaging findings and biochemical abnormalities. This case reiterates the atypical presentations of adolescent-onset cerebral XALD that may go unrecognised and misdiagnosed as a neurodevelopmental or psychiatric disease. Treatments for cerebral ALD are potentially life-saving, particularly when given early in the disease course.

The temperature ranges of structural transformations in WC-Co and Ti1-xAlxNin the process of cathode-arc evaporation are analyzed. The limiting values of the WC-Co temperature before the deposition of the coating correspond to 773 ... 873 K, after which the hardness of WC-Co and, as a consequence, the hardness of the composition WC-Co / Ti1-xAlx deteriorates. Analysis of the coating structural transformations made it possible to establish the structuring stages of the Ti1-xAlx coating during its deposition. Wear test was carried out for Ti1-xAlx coatings formed at each structuring stage. Wear test were carried out according to the finger-disk scheme at 300 K in coolant-cutting fluid on a laboratory friction machine. The wear behavior of the Ti1-xAlx coating are unstable at 773 K, then improve at 773 ... 853 K, stabilize with an increase in temperature to 963 K. The nanostructured Ti1-xAlx coating formed in the temperature range T sub/T m = 0.18... 0.23have the best complex of wear properties in comparison with analogues.

Abstract:

N-linked glycosylation can profoundly affect protein expression and function. N-linked glycosylation usually occurs at the sequon Asn-Xaa-Ser/Thr, where Xaa is any amino acid residue except Pro. However, many Asn-Xaa-Ser/Thr sequons are glycosylated inefficiently or not at all for reasons that are poorly understood. We have used a site-directed mutagenesis approach to examine how the Xaa and hydroxy (Ser/Thr) amino acid residues in sequons influence core-glycosylation efficiency. We recently demonstrated that certain Xaa amino acids inhibit core glycosylation of the sequon, Asn37-Xaa-Ser, in rabies virus glycoprotein (RGP). Here we examine the impact of different Xaa residues on core-glycosylation efficiency when the Ser residue in this sequon is replaced with Thr. The core-glycosylation efficiencies of RGP variants with different Asn37-Xaa-Ser/Thr sequons were compared by using a cell-free translation/glycosylation system. Using this approach we confirm that four Asn-Xaa-Ser sequons are poor oligosaccharide acceptors: Asn-Trp-Ser, Asn-Asp-Ser, Asn-Glu-Ser and Asn-Leu-Ser. In contrast, Asn-Xaa-Thr sequons are efficiently glycosylated, even when Xaa = Trp, Asp, Glu or Leu. A comparison of the glycosylation status of Asn-Xaa-Ser and Asn-Xaa-Thr sequons in other glycoproteins confirms that sequons with Xaa = Trp, Asp, Glu or Leu are rarely glycosylated when Ser is the hydroxy amino acid residue, and that these sequons are unlikely to serve as glycosylation sites when introduced into proteins by site-directed mutagenesis.

Abstract:

(Ti1-xAlx)N(x=0, 0.1, 0.3) coatings were deposited on 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV stainless steel by arc ion plating. The (Ti1-xAlx)N coatings had B1 NaCl structure, however its preferred orientation change from (111) to (220) with the increase of Al content. A number of nodule-shaped spots identified as rutile TiO2 by XRD formed on the surface of TiN coating after corrosion beneath NaCl deposit in wet oxygen at 600 oC. With the addition of Al, a thin scale composed of Al2O3 and TiO2 formed on the surface of the (Ti1-xAlx)N coatings instead of a scale of TiO2 on TiN coating, thereby their corrosion resistance was remarkably enhanced.

A series of Pb(Ti1-xAlx)O3, Pb(Ti1-xNbx)O3 and Pb(Ti1-xAlx/2Nbx/2)O3 thin films were fabricated onto Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates using a chemical solution deposition process. The dielectric constant of the Pb(Ti1-xAlx)O3 thin films increased with increase of aluminum content, while a maximum dielectric constant value was observed for the Pb(Ti1-xNbx)O3 and Pb(Ti1 xAlx/2Nbx/2)O3 thin films when the doping contents were 10 and 20 mol%, respectively. The dielectric constant of the Pb(Ti0.8Al0.1Nb0.1)O3 thin film is about 600, being two times higher than those of Pb(Ti0.9Al0.1)O3 and Pb(Ti0.9Nb0.1)O3 thin films. The Pb(Ti0.8Al0.1Nb0.1)O3 thin film showed less than 10-7 A/cm2 current density at ±150 kV/cm, being superior to the leakage property of the PbTiO3, Pb(Ti0.9Al0.1)O3 and Pb(Ti0.9Nb0.1)O3 thin films. The co-doping of aluminum and niobium is more effective to increase the dielectric and ferroelectric properties as compared with the individual aluminum or niobium doping.

We investigate the structural, elastic, electronic and magnetic properties of the Heusler compounds Cu2MnSi, Cu2MnAl and Cu2MnSi1-xAlx quaternary alloys, using the full-potential linear-augmented plane-wave method (FP-LAPW) in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT) using the generalized gradient approximation of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE). Our results provide predictions for the quaternary alloy Cu2MnSi1-xAlx (x = 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5) in which no experimental or theoretical data are currently available. We calculate the ground state’s properties of Cu2MnSi1-xAlx alloys for both nonmagnetic and ferromagnetic configurations, which lead to ferromagnetic and metallic compounds. Also, the calculations of the elastic constants and the elastic moduli parameters show that these quaternary Heusler alloys are ductile and anisotropic.

SummaryIn addition to parenteral anticoagulants and vitamin K antagonists (standard AC), non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC) are increasingly being used for the acute and long-term treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).The international, prospective, non-interventional XALIA study compared the acute and long-term treatment of DVT with rivaroxaban or standard AC under routine clinical practice and confirmed the safety and efficacy of rivaroxaban demonstrated in Phase III studies: annual event rates for major bleeding, VTE and all-cause mortality were 1.2 %, 2.4 % and 0.8 % respectively, compared to 3.4 %, 3.9 %, and 6.2 % with standard AC.The XALIA-DE subgroup analysis examined whether the XALIA results were applicable to Germany. The 586 rivaroxaban patients were younger and fewer had active cancer than the 355 treated with standard AC. As in XALIA, the incidence of major bleeding (1.6 vs. 4.1/100 patient-years [PY]), recurrent VTE (1.9 vs. 4.7/100 PY) and all-cause mortality (1.6 vs. 6.8/100 PY) were lower under rivaroxaban than under standard AC. These rates indicate a favourable benefit-risk profile of rivaroxaban under the conditions of everyday practice.

Abstract Samples of Fe82Ga18-xAlx (1.5 £ x £ 15) alloys were prepared using a high vacuum arc melting system and homogenized at 1100 8C for 3 h, 1 000 8C for 120 h, and 730 8C for 168 h. The Fe82Ga18-xAlx(3 £ x £ 13.5) alloys were annealed at 550 8C for 15 min, while being exposed to a low magnetic field. The structure of the alloys was analysed by X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The magnetostriction coefficient of each of the samples was measured. It was found that the magnetostriction values of Fe82Ga18-xAlx(3 £ x £ 13.5) alloys were enhanced by magnetic field annealing. The magnetostrictive growth rate of the Fe82Ga15Al3sample was particularly large at 165%, and the Fe82Ga9Al9sample showed the highest magnetostrictive coefficient (up to 114 · 10-6) without compressive stress.

Abstract:

This article examines the writings of the emigré Iraqi-Kurdish poet Buland al-Haydari (1926-1996) and thus explores components of his identity as reflected in themes and motifs of his poetry, in light of the fact that Iraqis belong to a variety of ethnicities, religions and sects. This article will also address the question of whether the poet's self-perception was transformed from a complex hybrid identity with Muslim, Christian, and other influences but excluding Kurdish elements, to a "new" Kurdish identity, as an outcome of the Iraqi chemical attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988. The assumption is that although the Halabja incident was the point at which the poet began to relate to his Kurdish origins, he was still loyal to Baghdad, to Iraq and to Arab culture, rather than solely emphasising his Kurdish identity. The article will examine the thematic and aesthetic effects of the tragedy in Halabja on al-Haydari's poetry in Arabic, focusing on different forms of identity as reflected in the poetry of this political activist.
