The Information Society is an increasingly important reality in developed societies and, along with globalization, is radically transforming our societies. In this context, the media and electronic communications networks are experiencing a convergence process that involves an unprecedented transformation in the world of communication. The purpose of this thesis is the detailed analysis of the evolution and of the current status of electronic communications networks and media, which I have labeled multimedia and communication networks, and, further, to analyze the current regulatory systems in order to develop a set of basic principles to be considered in the setting up of a regulatory model of multimedia communication networks, rooted in core values of social liberalism, and able to effectively defend the public interest.

"From artistic practice to audiovisual and multimedia communication"
The mating of forms and episodes of contagion between artistic practice and audiovisual and multimedia in the context of change in the society of culture over the last thirty years are the subject of this dissertation. Its genesis lies in the hypermedia formalization (texts, images, sounds, and videos) of the latter and in the desire to give structure, organization and rules to the referential and methodological framework, as well as the epistemological corpus, in a ramified fashion.
Under a synchronic, interactive ordering of procedures of asking about what (detection), seeing where and what it has involved (analysis), and learning how and in what way (description), we extract an assessment of the complex set of contributions made by art to communication.
The blows, noiseless, to the rigid structures of communication, encouraged by art; the consequences of the exercise of a critical sense toward mediation and of an increased awareness of the ecology of the media; the influences on the renewal of the perception of media space and time make up part of the set of conclusions. Art's contribution to the appearance of new typologies of audiovisual and multimedia expression; the effect of elements originating in art on the shape of a post sensibility in present-day communication are described in this non-linear dissertation (original hypermedia version), now available in linear form (PDF text version).

Full textLarge interconnection or communication networks are usually designed and studied by using techniques from graph theory. This work presents some contributions to this subject. With this aim, two new operations are proposed: the "hierarchical product" of graphs and the "Manhattan product" of digraphs. The former can be seen as a generalization of the Cartesian product of graphs and allows us to construct some interesting families with a high degree of hierarchy, such as the well-know binomial tree, which is a data structure very used in the context of computer science. The latter yields, in particular, the known topologies of Manhattan Street Networks, which has been widely studied and used for modelling some classes of light-wave networks. In this thesis, a multidimensional approach is analyzed. Several properties of the graphs or digraphs obtained by both operations are dealt with, but special attention is paid to the study of their structural parameters (operation properties, induced subdigraphs, degree distribution and line digraph structure), metric parameters (diameter, radius and mean distance), symmetry (automorphism groups and Cayley digraphs), cycle structure (Hamilton cycles and arc-disjoint Hamiltonian decomposition) and spectral properties (eigenvalues and eigenvectors). For instance, with respect to the last issue, it is shown that some families of hypertrees have spectra with all different eigenvalues "filling up" all the real line. Moreover, we show the relationship between its eigenvector set and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Also some protocols of communication, such as local routing and broadcasting algorithms, are addressed. Finally, some deterministic models (Sierpinsky networks and others) having similar properties as some real complex networks, such as the Internet, are presented.

Full textThe overarching research objective of this thesis is to study the social integration process of the Ecuadorean and Moroccan migrant population in Catalonia. It focuses specifically on the role of associative participation in this process, analysing it from a relational standpoint. The research is based on the premise that personal networks’ change and the direction of said change shows migrants’ “structural fitting in” in the host society. Therefore, migrants’ networks reveal the social integration patterns from the relational point of view. The thesis has focussed on identifying the explanatory factors behind the development of migrants’ personal networks, considering it as a product of both the situation at the time of arrival (the initial context) and the specific trajectories of this population in Catalonia. The thesis pays particular attention to the contribution of the associative sphere to this process. The associative sphere is studied from a dual standpoint: how networks contribute to defining migrants’ participation, and, in turn, how participation affects social integration patterns. In addition to the former theoretical or substantive contributions, the methodological issues of the research study also played a key role in the dissertation. This research study develops an in-depth theoretical and applied methodological reflection on the use of the mixed methods methodology in the field of social network analysis. The thesis has reviewed its uses, potential and limitations in order to focus particularly on two key issues in the current developments of relational sociology: the link between factual and cognitive components of the social reality, and the role of social networks at different levels of the social structure. The research study’s methodological design therefore combines a personal networks survey in line with extensive quantitative reasoning, with semi-structured biographical interviews that follow the intensive and interpretative qualitative reasoning. These various methods pursue the same objectives and research questions. They are combined according to an explanatory sequential and nested design, such that the combination and interpretative integration of both empirical parts allows the specific objectives tackled by the research to be achieved.

Full textThis research focuses on finding out if the PSC-¬‐PSOE and CiU use Twitter as a tool for two‐way communication to communicate with their audiences, studying the type of information issued from the official profiles of both parties in election campaigns held between 2010 and 2012 in Catalonia; to the Parliament of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, and again, the Parliament of Catalonia. For this procedure, we use a methodological triangulation consisting of an analysis of quantitative and qualitative content of the messages posted on Twitter in the official accounts used by the political party; a literature review and in‐depth interviews to those responsible for communication 2.0 in CiU and PSC‐PSOE in the mentioned elections. It also contains semi-¬structured interviews to experts in political communication 2.0 and non-participant observation of various meetings, one for party and candidate, carried out during the PSC-PSOE and CiU analyzed campaigns.

Full textThis thesis refers to two different aspects of the information and communication technologies (ICT) in the field of diabetes. Firstly we have evaluated in 2 different periods (years 2001 and 2013) the access to health contents in the Internet of two groups of patients with type 1 diabetes attended in a specialized unit, through an self-administered questionnaire. The number of evaluated patients was 244 in Period 1 and 289 in Period 2. Between both periods we have observed a significant increase in the proportion of patients that access to health contents in the Internet from 18.1% to 51.2% of the global population studied, in parallel to an increase in Internet availability from 36.7% to 74.4%. The analysis of predictors of access to health contents through the Internet it must be highlighted a significant increase in the proportion of users with a low education level who accessed to health contents (from 31.8% to 49.3%). In Period 2 we also assessed the use of social networks for health purposes, where we detected a low use (24.8% of social networks’ users; 12.1% of the all the population), while education level being a predictive variable. Health Apps use was also low (34% of smartphone’s users; 19% of the all the population). Despite this low use of social network for health purposes, the availability for digital communication with health professionals and for participating in a Facebook disease oriented group was high (73.3% and 66.5%, respectively). We can, therefore, conclude that the observed increase in the access to health contents has been accompanied by a decrease in the differences in the education level between users and non-users. Additionally, the interest in the digital communication with health professionals and in participating in specific social networks, along with the low actual uses of these resources for health purposes, might indicate the need for a higher implication of health professionals in developing social networks adapted to patients’ needs. Secondly, we have evaluated contents about type 2 diabetes in various formats of ICTs, specifically as a tool for users’ treatment decisions and education. In 2 different studies (2003 and 2010) we assessed the presence in the Internet of patients’ oriented evidences, references to uncertainty areas, and references to studies that haven’t been able to show beneficial effects of blood glucose treatment intensification. Our results showed that the information available is no sufficient for making informed decisions, since the reference to the evidence showing little effect of treatment intensification on morbidity, mortality and/or quality of life are essentially lacking. We also assessed Twitter contents, where we observed a limited presence of health professionals and a high proportion of branding. Additionally we assessed the presence of educational contents in Youtube videos. We assessed 393 videos and found that the proportion of videos with some educational content is approximately 50%. However, we also observed that 25% of videos presented some form of misleading information. The presence of misleading information of low educational value was higher in videos from “alternative medicine”. With these results, we stress the need for health professionals’ knowledge of reliable sources in patients’ dedicated social networks.

Full textThis research has two areas. First of all, we analyse the link between humans and machines acording to the interaction in the web 2.0 to find out if the use of Internet has enabled new capabilities that create the abstraction of a virtual proximity that generates empathy in crisis or emergencies. Furthermore, determining the role of the communication departments of the non-profit sector, and in this sense, the deeper message that the receiver searchs, finds or receives through the Internet. We do that because it serves in the virtual environment as a trigger to generate a change in the way of processing the information and it shows how the transmission channel of the information is important for the reaction of being different.

Full textFictional television series are experiencing an auspicious moment due to their technical, professional and thematic quality. An example of this is those with historical content. Not only do they imply to exhibit it on the small TV screen but they also produce a favorable work by wide spreading their themes in the social networks and, consequently, creating an active communication throughout users’ comments, where they express their opinions on how the topics are treated and portrayed. This doctoral thesis research studies the relation between the comments that social network users post in Spain and in Chile, regarding the historical memory as a narrative consequence of those fictional series that address this content. The sample is related to those platforms associated to those series whose plots are set in periods of the Spanish and Chilean history; for example, during repression, concerning the social and cultural consequences reflected in these television fictional series, Amar es Para Siempre; Cuéntame Cómo Pasó; Los 80: más que una moda y Los Archivos del Cardenal. After reviewing specific seasons of these three TV series, I examined those social networks connected with them. The objective was to select a sample that collected the necessary comments for the analysis of the themes. A discussion group was also developed to examine the viewers’ perception regarding the visualized historical memory from the fictional series examined. This doctoral thesis derives from a research initiated in 2012. The project was financed by the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT) with their Advanced Human Capital program, Becas Chile (Chile Scholarship) employee of the Ministry of Education. The research, conducted in Chile and in Spain during 2014 and 2015, seeks to understand the sense of memories from the perspective of the use of the language that spectators employ at the moment of viewing the fictional series referred to affective and expressive components, as well as the representation mentioned by the social network participants originated from the communication existing within the social context of the Spanish and Chilean historical memory, and, the impressions of those who regularly watch the TV series analysed.
