This thesis attempts to interpret the metamorphic condition and fluid composition experienced by metacarbonates on Utö, located in the south-eastern parts of the Stockholm archipelago. Utö is a part of the Svecofennian domain, and the area Bergslagen, that has hosted several mines over the last millennia. In this thesis we present the NOAO-XMM Cluster Survey (NXS). NXS has provided optical follow-up of X-ray cluster candidates serendipitously detected by the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS). We report details on the execution, data reduction and analysis of 154 wide-field MOSAIC images containing 630 XCS cluster candidates. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties and of quantum phase transitions (QPTs) of two different systems which have been investigated by means of low-temperature magnetization measurements. The systems are the heavy-fermion Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 (metallic) and the quantum magnet NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 (insulator). Although they are very different materials, they share two common properties: magnetism and QPTs.
