Abstract:
Xenin, a gastrointestinal peptide, is structurally similar to neurotensin which functions as a satiety factor via neurotensin receptor 1 (Ntsr1). Metabolic effect of the adipocyte hormone leptin is partially mediated through the Ntsr1 and interleukin 1 type I receptor (IL-1RI) in the central nervous system (CNS). Xenin reduces food intake when administered centrally and peripherally. Apart from its acute feeding-suppressing effect, the distinct metabolic action of xenin and the mechanism of xenin-induced anorexia remain to be elucidated. We hypothesized that prolonged xenin treatment reduces food intake and body weight and increases energy expenditure. We also hypothesized that xenin reduces food intake by activating CNS signalling pathways including Ntsr1 and IL-1RI and by interacting with leptin. To address these hypotheses, we examined (1) the effect of xenin treatment on food intake, energy expenditure and body weight in wild-type, Ntsr1-deficient and IL-1RI-deficient mice, (2) the effect of xenin on hypothalamic Fos and interleukin 1β (IL-1β) expression in wild-type mice, and (3) the effect of co-injection of xenin and leptin on food intake and body weight in wild-type mice. Daily intraperitoneal (i.p.) or intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) xenin treatment (6-10 days) significantly reduced body weight gain and adiposity with a transient reduction in food intake in wild-type mice. Xenin treatment (i.p.) caused a significant reduction in respiratory quotient without changes in energy expenditure. Xenin treatment increased hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) mRNA levels and reduced acyl-coenzyme A: diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 (DGAT2) mRNA levels in white adipose tissue. Xenin (i.p.) increased the number of Fos-immunoreactive cells in the hypothalamus and the brainstem and increased hypothalamic IL-1β mRNA levels. The anorectic effects of xenin and leptin were abolished or attenuated in mice lacking Ntsr1 or IL-1RI. I.p. co-administration of xenin and leptin caused greater reductions in food intake and body weight compared to leptin alone and xenin alone. These data suggest that long-term xenin treatment reduces body weight by reducing food intake and increasing fat oxidization. Xenin reduces food intake by activating CNS signalling pathways involving Ntsr1 and IL-1 possibly through the interaction with leptin. These findings implicate xenin and its downstream mediators as potential targets for anti-obesity drugs.

Abstract:
Grid Computing Systems are inherently more vulnerable to security threats than traditional systems, since they potentially encompass a large number of users, resources, and applications managed by different administrative domains. Authentication and authorization are imperative for grid systems. Since scalability and distribution are major concerns on grid environments, those services implementations should avoid centralized solutions. Another relevant requirement to consider is the provision of mechanisms for delegating access rights, since they minimize the overhead of grid administrators on providing access rights to grid resources. The owner of an access right should be able to delegate permissions to another user, maybe for a limited time, based on his trust on that user. However, delegation must be used with care. A long chain of delegations could lead to improper use of resources by malicious users. Confidentiality and integrity are also important security requirements for many grid applications. To address these problems, we designed a Security Architecture for Grid Systems named Xenia. This architecture is based on SPKI/SDSI, a flexible and extensible decentralized security model that provides authentication, confidentiality, and access control. We proposed an extension to the SPKI/SDSI model to represent trust relations between subjects based on subjective logic.

Martin, Christine Margaret Anne. "Characterisation, biological activity and therapeutic potential of xenin and modified forms in obesity-diabetes." Thesis, Ulster University, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.667745.

Abstract:
Novel therapeutic approaches are required to restore normoglycaemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This thesis characterised and elucidated biological activity and therapeutic applicability of xenin and modified forms in obesity-diabetes. The plasma enzymatic degradation products of xenin-25 have now been characterised, namely xenin 9-25, xenin 11-25, xenin 14-25 and xenin 18-25. Xenin- 25 and enzyme resistant synthetic xenin-25[Lys13PAL] enhanced insulin secretion and potentiated GIP-induced insulin release in vitro, improved anti-hyperglycaemic and insulin-releasing activity and reduced food intake in vivo. Moreover, xenin- 25 [Lys 13p AL] demonstrated enhanced biological activity compared to native xenin- 25. Twice daily administration of xenin-25[Lys13PAL] for 14 days significantly improved metabolic control in dietary-induced diabetes. Once daily administration of xenin-25[Lys13PAL], in combination with a novel acylated GIP agonist, (DAla2) GIP[Lys37PAL], for 21 days did not have any additive effects. Nonetheless, (DAla2) GIP[Lys37PAL] treated mice exhibited significant improvements in glycaemic control and insulin sensitivity. The biological role of xenin-25 degradation fragments was also assessed. As such, xenin 9-25, xenin 11-25 and xenin 14-25 had no insulinotropic, glucose-lowering or satiety effects. Nonetheless, xenin 18-25 demonstrated in vitro insulinotropic effects, and mild glucose-lowering effects in vivo. The novel xenin 18-25 analogue, xenin 18-25[Lys20PAL], demonstrated similar biological effects, but these were not enhanced compared to xenin 18-25. In addition, the amino acid substituted xenin analogues, namely xenin-25 GIn and xenin 18-25 GIn, induced in vitro insulin secretion, reduced glycaemic excursion and enhanced insulin secretion in vivo. Furthermore, xenin-25 GIn potentiated the insulinotropic action of GIP and acutely inhibited food intake. Sub-chronic administration of xenin-25 GIn or xenin 18-25 Gin improved glucose tolerance and metabolic response to GIP in high fat mice. Collectively, this thesis has demonstrated that xenin, and modified forms, possess beneficial independent biological actions in addition to GIP additive actions, and appear to have dual therapeutic properties that merit further investigation for T2DM therapy.

Kuhlman, Leslie Charles. "Investigation of a xenia effect for yield caused by the waxy gene in grain sorghum." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/2624.

Abstract:
Sorghum grain with a waxy endosperm is more digestible and has a higher feeding efficiency compared to sorghum grain with a non-waxy (or normal) endosperm. However, waxy sorghums (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) yield 10-15% less than normal sorghum and the cause of the yield reduction is unclear. The objective of this research is to determine if the yield decrease could be due to the waxy phenotype itself. The waxy phenotype is an example of a xenia effect, where the pollen not only contributes to the genotype of the resulting hybrid, but also immediately influences the phenotype of the resulting seed. Sterile hybrids under different pollination types, and different genotypes of fertile hybrids, both resulted in hybrids that produced different ratios of waxy phenotype seed. The effects on yield and 500 kernel weight were investigated in Weslaco, College Station, and Halfway, Texas over two years. Yields of sterile heterozygous waxy hybrids under waxy pollination, which produced an average 27% waxy seed over all environments, were nearly identical to homozygous nonwaxy hybrids that produced 0% waxy seed. Average 500 kernel weights for the same hybrids were not different. Grain yields for the fertile hybrid genotypes were significantlydifferent. Hybrids which produced 100% waxy seed yielded significantly less than hybrids which produced 25% waxy seed. Upon further examination, hybrids that were produced from waxy F1 endosperm seed (wxwxwx) had significantly worse stand and panicle number per plot means than did hybrids from nonwaxy F1 endosperm seed (Wxwxwx). Grain yields adjusted for panicle number showed no significant differences. The average 500 kernel weights between hybrids with different amounts of waxy phenotype grain did not significantly differ. The yield effect seen in this population was the result of waxy endosperm hybrid seed displaying significantly poorer stand establishment than nonwaxy endosperm hybrid seed. These data do not support a xenia yield effect due to the waxy gene.

Abstract:
The mosaics of xenia in the Roman area of Tunisia are the most numerous at the scale of the Empire. They present three particularities, the first one concerns the compositions of the ornamental tiling: the xenia motifs are represented isolated and, in most cases, associated with other decorative themes; the second one relates to the distribution of those mosaics in the household space covering all components of the domus and not just the rooms reserved for the hosts; finally the third one touches the semantic of the xenia which does not refer itself only about hospitality

Abstract:
We will discuss two books of epigrams by the Latin poet Martial: Xenia and Apophoreta, published, respectively, in the Saturnalia of 83 (or 84) and 85 A.D. under the reign of Domitian. Our goal, in the first place, is to discuss the highly apotropaic and propitiatory features of both the Saturnalia, as the god Saturn itself despite the gloomy elements commonly associated with him. Then well try to demonstrate how the Roman festival interferes with the fruition of the epigrams in these collections, and demands that the poet abandons temporarily the common poignancy of his verses. Not only because Saturnalia constitute the principle of unity of these books, but because Martial seek to emulate a set of ancient treatises of facetious nature, popular during the festival dedicated to Saturn, we believe that the poet legitimate the existence of new epigrammatic subgenre which is corollary of the very Roman Saturnalia. Finally, we will present as a result of our investigation an original translation into Portuguese verse of Xenia and Apophoreta.

Astract: The xenia phenomenon is described as the direct effect of the pollen in the seeds's embryo and endosperm, altering their genetic traits and providing qualitative and quantitative changes. Several grain traits as color, size, weight and contents any substance, presents this effect. Therefore there is possibility of this phenomenon to be explored with the cultivation of two hybrids with mixture of seeds, seeking for a increase in the yield. The goal of this work was identify hybrid pairs for the traits grains medium weight, grains size and the oil and protein content, that show xenia effect in two sowing season. Were appraised all the pairs possible, including the reciprocal ones, among the hybrids AG 8080, DKB 333B, DAS 32, P 30F80, TORK and XB 8010, in a complete random block design, with four replicates at normal season and three replicates at no season crop. The pollination (cross and sib) of each hybrid, were realized manually in each plot, under the specified treatment. The analyses indicated 15 % of xenia effect in the grains medium weight of the hybrid XB 8010 as pollinated by TORK, at normal season, as compared with XB 8010 pollinated by your self pollen. In no season crop the hybrid DKB 333B provided an increase of 20% in the grains medium weight of AG 8080. For the protein content, the xenia effect was significant and negative (-9,0%) when the hybrid DKB 333 received pollen of TORK, at normal season, and the of others crossing have not influence the pollen, showing a larger maternal effect. For the trait oil content the xenia effect showed up in two sowing season. At normal season the pollen of hybrid DKB 333B changed significantly the grains oil percentage of AG 8080 (15%) and TORK (14%). In no season crop, the pollen of P 30F80 and DKB 333B increase in 20% and 21% the oil contents of DAS 32 and P 30F80, respectively. Therefore it was... Abstract:
This doctoral thesis deals with xenia in Great Syria from Constantine’s reign to Justinian’s. The comparison between the Greek and the Syriac uses of the notion of hospitality brings to light important semantic modifications that reflect irreducible differences between the Pagan and Christian conceptions of hospitality. This notion gets Christianized in the course of the 4th and 5th centuries, to the point of becoming a theological topic, privilege of monastic milieux, particularly Syriac ones. But how far does the Christianization of mentalities necessarily imply a deep modification in cultural and social practices of reception and a complete change in the material structures in which reception activities take place? The study of hospitality structures and facilities reveals the durability of the localization of reception structures at the level of the Syrian territory throughout late Antiquity, even if, at the level of the structures themselves, the diversity of the solutions adopted seems to testify to a real attachment to regional traditions. Finally, the examination of the protagonists of hospitality shows that monks are far from being the only actors of hospitality in Great Syria. Besides, there is a contradiction between the standard universalist discourse of Christian welcoming and reality, as we can decipher it. The links between hospitality and dissidence have to be considered. New criteria of selection of hosts and guests appear in Late Antiquity. Heresy re-introduces the idea of specific criteria into use, which causes the “deconstruction” of the social pattern and new political stakes, which seem to influence the birth of the Non-Chalcedonian Church

Abstract:

Abstract:
From the Archaic period, the Greeks fought in Thrace against but also at the sides of the warriors of the region, while the Thracians, recruited by foreign armies, were increasingly waging war on the various battlefields of the Greek world. During the Hellenistic period, the integration of the Thracians warriors within Greek armies is such that their name has come to designate a lightly-armed type of troops. It is the result of a long process, underlining the importance of the personal relationships established between Greek and Thracian aristocracies. The literary sources provide such examples of philia allowing various forms of military cooperation from the Homeric epic to the reign of the last Antigonids, albeit these examples often get overlooked by Modern historians. The reign of Philip II saw an intensification and remarkable geographical extension of this phenomenon. His Thracian policy, presented in a misleading manner by some ancient texts and misunderstood by the Moderns, must be reinterpreted. Innovative in many ways, it was one of his highest priorities and was a model for his successors until the last kings of Macedonia. The success of his Thracian policy can be observed in its achievements : the pacification of the region, and the massive recruitment of Thracian warriors, that contributed to a very large extent to the successes of Alexander the Great in Asia. The thesis finally offers a reappraisal of the history and geographical limits of the Odrysian Kingdom, through a study of the tribal and warlike structures in Thrace
