Abstract:
Subfamily Eneopterinae has been studied for its diversified acoustic modalities and disjunct distribution. The genus Xenogryllus Bolívar, 1890 is one of the oldest genera of the subfamily, and the first genus of the tribe Xenogryllini. Xenogryllus is known for its low-frequency calling songs and wide distribution across Africa and Asia. It is known from six species and has never been subject to formal taxonomic revision and description of acoustic features of their calling songs is lacking. Therefore, this study consists of a detailed taxonomic revision of all the species. We redescribe or app

Searching on the internet for supplementary information about species of interest can be helpful when trying to document a quite common but under studied species. While revising the genus Xenogryllus Bolívar, 1890, we used this method to find additional references about the species Xenogryllus marmoratus (Haan, 1844). We were extremely interested in one video showing an interaction between two males of this species. The video shows a small male of X. marmoratus mounting a larger male of the same species, and eating the product of the metanotal glands. Meanwhile, the larger male tries to transf

Pseudolebinthus is an intriguing genus of the tribe Xenogryllini with a distribtuion restricted to southeast Africa and characterized by unique morphological features such as asymmetrical male forewings and harp veins shaped as elongated balloons. It is sister group to the widely distributed genus Xenogryllus and has been known by two species, P. africanus Robillard, 2006 and P. whellani Robillard, 2006. The genus was initially diagnosed based exclusively on male morphological features. In this study, we add a new species to the genus, P. gorochovi Robillard sp. nov. and revise the diagnostic

Crickets in the subfamily Eneopterinae have been recently the focus of many taxonomic and evolutionary studies, particularly the tribe Lebinthini, which is known for its high species richness, wide distribution and diversity of communication behaviors. Their sister group, the Xenogryllini, are much less diverse, have a distribution limited to the Afrotropics and Asia, and have been the subject of fewer studies. In this study, we extend the knowledge on this tribe by describing a new species from Madagascar: Xenogryllus lemuria Yu & Robillard sp. nov. We also leverage a genome skimming appr

In India, the cricket subfamily Eneopterinae is represented by two known genera, Xenogryllus Bolívar, 1890 and Indigryllus Robillard & Jaiswara, 2019. The latter was recently described and is known from a single species I. kudremu Robillard & Jaiswara, 2019 from Karnataka, India. The species was known exclusively from its morphological features and there existed no information on its biology and acoustic features. Abstract:
Background Next-generation sequencing technology can now be used to sequence historical specimens from natural history collections, an approach referred to as museomics. The museomics allows obtaining molecular data from old museum-preserved specimens, a resource of biomolecules largely underexploited despite the fact that these specimens are often unique samples of nomenclatural types that can be crucial for resolving scientific questions. Despite recent technical progress, cricket mitogenomes are still scarce in the databases, with only a handful of new ones generated each year from freshly
