Abstract:
The xerophytic scrub located on the lava field produced by the Xitle volcano has been almost completely destroyed by the urban sprawl of Mexico City. The Pedregal de San Ángel Ecological reserve (1.77 km2) offers protection to one of the most important remnant portions. Despite such protection status, this plant community is presently still affected by invasion of exotic species, pollution, illegal extraction of selected species, and recurrent fires. The aim of this study was to update the floristic knowledge of the reserve and to analyze possible changes in the floristic richness and composit

We present a new record of Lewis’s Woodpecker, Melanerpes lewis (Gray, 1849), a rare winter visitor to northern Mexico, in a riparian-grassland corridor at La Regina, Buenaventura Municipality, Chihuahua, on 11–12 January 2014. The record represents the fourth record of this species in the state, and the first record for both the northern portion of the Chihuahua region and the Mexican ecoregion level IV “Foothills and Plains with grasslands, xerophytic scrub and conifer oak forests”. We also comment on its current status and distribution in Mexico.

We report an adult male specimen of the snake Pantherophis emoryi from xerophytic scrub habitat in the Municipality of Real de Asientos, Aguascalientes, México. This specimen represents the first state record of P. emoryi from Aguascalientes and extends the known distribution of the species 107 km in a straight line west-northwest from the nearest previous record. Our specimen was found in habitat that is under heavy agricultural pressure, and recently, threatened by mining. This may indicate that other Chihuahuan Desert taxa may be found in this area.

Abstract:
The tropical seasonal rainy evergreen broad-leaved forest vegetation of the Cucphoung National Park has been classified and the distribution of plant communities has been shown on the map using the relations of vegetation to geology, geomorphology and pedology. The method of vegetation mapping includes: 1) the identifying of vegetation types in the remote-sensed materials (aerial photographs and satellite images); 2) field work to compile the interpretation keys and to characterize all the communities of a study area; 3) compilation of the final vegetation map using the combined information. We studied the spatial arrangement of floristic diversity in two systems of limestone outcrops, located in two distant Neotropical sites: the region of Nizanda (S Mexico) and the Paranã Valley (Central Brazil). We addressed the question whether their vegetation could display a similar zonation, and we explored the relative effects of distance and an environmental gradient on α-, β- and γ-diversities. The limestone outcrops at both sites are similar in size and in elevation, but strongly differ in between-outcrop distance by an order of magnitude. At each study site three individual limestone o

The American continent extends over 12,000 kilometres from Alaska to Cape Horn, and encompasses an enormous variety of environments from arctic to tropical. For the purposes of this discussion, such a huge variety has to be simplified into a few major geographical units within the three regions of North, Central, and South America (Fig. 7.1). Large tracts of Alaska and modern Canada north of the 58th parallel consist of tundra, which extends further south down the eastern coast of Labrador. To the south, boreal coniferous forests stretch eastwards from Lake Winnipeg and the Red River past the
