Abstract:

La tesi ha come oggetto la traduzione del racconto 萧萧 ‘Xiaoxiao’, scritto da Shen Congwen nel 1929. La vicenda, che appare di per sé singolare per il matrimonio combinato tra una bambina di tredici anni e un bambino ancora infante, si rivela il ritratto di una società in cambiamento e del il confronto - contrasto di tradizione e modernità che interessa l’intera Cina nel ventesimo secolo. L’antagonismo nei confronti del confucianesimo, che con la sua dottrina aveva governato per secoli ogni aspetto del vivere comune, si esprime attraverso l’auspicato ritorno al modo di vivere e ai valori dei popoli primitivi che abitano i territori di frontiera, come lo Hunan Occidentale, patria dell’autore, nonché luogo dove si svolge la narrazione. La traduzione del racconto, correlata di commento che ne esplicita le principali scelte traduttive, viene inserita nel suo contesto socio-culturale e integrata con le nozioni essenziali sulla vita e sulla poetica di Shen Congwen, considerato uno degli autori più influenti del suo tempo.

Abstract:

Hou Hsiao-hsien is one of the most controversial film directors in Taiwan. His proponents love him for his artistic and poetic film style of narrating history. The government hated him for his involvement in politics. Regardless of their contentiousness, his films are widely acclaimed and worthy of close analysis. This thesis engages with Taiwanese history by offering a reading of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s A City of Sadness (1989), The Puppetmaster (1993), Good Men, Good Women (1995), and Three Times (2005). I critique the films’ historical dimensions, cultural representations and approach to gender issues in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the present. In addition, Hou’s film aesthetics and cinematography are analysed, through comparisons with the work of Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou, in order to explore the influences of Japanese colonisation and Chinese cultural and ethnic connection. Hou’s immense contribution to Taiwanese film consists principally of a Taiwanese trilogy that traces Taiwan’s history in the twentieth century. In The Puppetmaster (1993), Hou details the era of Japanese colonisation from 1895 to the restoration of Taiwan by the Kuomintang in 1945. A City of Sadness focuses on the fate of the Lin family from 1945 to 1949, which epitomises Taiwanese life during the initial stages of Kuomintang domination. Good Men, Good Women (1995) portrays two different eras in Taiwan: the political movement in the 1950s and pop culture in the 1990s. In Hou’s later work, Three Times (not part of this trilogy), Hou uses subtle techniques to give a brief historical retrospective through the respective love stories of three women. The thesis uses examples from not only the above films but also Hou’s initial romantic trilogy, Cute Girl (1980), Cheerful Wind (1981), and The Green, Green Grass of Home (1982) and his first realistic film, Son’s Big Doll, which is featured in the omnibus film The Sandwich Man, to explore Hou’s historical, cultural and gender representations. In order to understand Hou’s ideas and beliefs in greater depth, I also review the documentary, The Portrait of Hou Hsiao-hsien (Olivier Assayas, 1997) as well as his films in the last decade, such as Café Lumière (2003), The Electric Princess House (2007), Le Voyage du Ballon Rouge (2008) and La Belle Epoque (2011). In this thesis, I explore the notion of macro-history (official history) and micro-history (family and women’s stories) and the interrelationship between them. I provide my own illustrative family photos and handwritten documents of my grandfather and uncle to show the parallel between my family story and Hou’s depiction of the impact of cultural hegemony on family history (micro-history). In A City of Sadness, with reference to Julia Kristeva’s (1986) notion of ‘feminine time’ and the debate between Emilie Yeh (2000) and Mizou (1991) concerning “whether women can really enter history,” I argue that Hou Hsiao-hsien’s use of a family’s microhistory to parallel the national macro-history of the February 28 Incident opens an important historical window through which the audience may re-encounter and reflect upon Taiwan’s past, and think carefully about its future. As distinct from Mizou and Yeh, I propose that it is possible for micro-history and macro-history to co-exist, based on the theory of yin and yang. In Good Men, Good Women, putting Wu Jia-chi’s and Tessa Morris-Suzuki’s theories on media and memory alongside one another, I question how useful it is to discuss Hou’s use of women in cinema and “film within a film” to represent history and, more importantly, whether this is a reliable approach. Can it be seen as a national allegory? In the discussion of The Puppetmaster and Three Times, I bridge the gap between Nick Browne (2000) and Li Zhen-ya’s (2000) debate about whether Hou Hsiao-hsien’s films are depoliticised. I argue that Hou Hsiao-hsien’s films are political and that his humanitarian concerns should not be ignored. I have also argued that there is a reason for Hou’s poetic style of narration and indirectness, which is chiefly to avoid censorship. To discover the truth, to reconcile and to produce harmony are the primary aims of Hou Hsiao-hsien. Hou’s films suggest that the Taiwanese people should cast away the darkness of the past and face the bright future, as they have understood their history and take a forgiving attitude toward past misfortunes.

Abstract Since Su Shi “washed away the forms of finery and fragrance, liberated [poetry] from the binds of restraint,” and reformed the soft and glamorous Delicately Restrained ci style, and turned to using the wilder forms of Vigorous and Unconstrained, the school of Vigorous and Unconstrained “used poetry as ci” to “state their ambitions,” this style infected the world of ci after the Song court moved south after the Jingkang Incident. This style shared the world of ci along with the traditional Delicately Restrained ci style with lingering emotions. In this way, ci literature with a hard and a soft style, with statement of ambition and real color coexisted at the same time. Zhang Yuangan and Zhang Xiaoxiang inherited Su Shi’s unconstrained airs, and opened the floodgates of Southern Song’s wild and free Vigorous and Unconstrained ci style. Liberation as a part of the Vigorous and Unconstrained style by the Zhangs connected the seventy years between Su and Xin. Even though between them there were many famous Delicately Restrained poets, the prolific production and angst in the sense of mission of the Zhangs connected the direct link between the creative paths of Su Shi and Xin Qiji. This article primarily assesses ci works by the Zhangs to gradually clarify their orientation and value in the history of ci poetry. Chapter 1 “Introduction”: explains the research motivation, state of research, research methodology and steps, in order to clarify the research context of this paper. Chapter 2 “Temporal background and lives in formation of ci by the Zhangs”: through the historical criticism method through knowledge of the person and consideration of the times, exterior conditions such as the political context, regional environment, social atmosphere, and conditions of the ci world, as well as the exploration of ci poet family backgrounds, life experiences, and relationships in order to summarize the gradual changes caused to the poetry of the creative entities by their time and developmental backgrounds. Chapter 3 “Analysis and comparison of the content of poetry by the Zhangs”: the evolutionary process from the writing transfer of the emotive protagonist and creative entity psychology as well as opening of ci imagery are used to analyze the creative content of various ci works by the Zhangs. Chapter 4 “The creative consciousness in poetry by the Zhangs”: this chapter begins with the ci form used by the Zhangs, and through the process of textual reading and interpretation, the emotional aspects of the Zhangs are explored. In turn, their personality images and life consciousness are understood. The creative texts are read to accentuate the meaning and value expressed in ci by the Zhangs in their creative consciousness. Chapter 5 “Analysis and comparison of the methods in poetic arts by the Zhangs”: the two major aspects of structure and image are the main axes of exploration, gradually used to consider the artistic characteristics of ci poetry by the Zhangs. Chapter 6 “Analysis and comparison of ci poetic styles of the Zhangs”: the process of exploration and comparison is used to discuss the similarities and differences in the creative styles of the Zhangs. Chapter 7 “Conclusion”: after orienting the ci history of the Zhangs, the main points of chapters are summarized to conclude the author’s reflections after exploring ci by the Zhangs. Through evaluation of the whole paper, it is ascertained that other than a high degree of similarity in inheriting the Vigorous and Unconstrained style, the Zhangs were influenced by traditional regulations of Delicately Restrained poetic works, and in <Luchuan Ci> and <Yuhu Ci> they also demonstrate the existence of many Delicately Restrained poetic works. In terms of accentuation of creative content, broadening of subjectivity, refinement of artistic technique, and external style of works, the two poets showed similarities and differences in their creative characteristics. This also shows that the status of the Zhangs in the history of ci is located at a key point between Su Shi and Xin Qiji’s Vigorous and Unconstrained ci as connecting both poets directly.

Based on the concept of the comprehensive community development and eco-museum, this article primarily discusses the plan of repurposing vacant space through the strategy of art and takes Xiaoxi street district （小西巷）in Changhua City as model. Xiaoxi street district located in the ancient Changhua City is a long-established street full of abundant culture. Because it experienced flourishing times in the past, the whole street displaces the curve of history, which contains many touching stories and memories. About a decade ago, the researcher and a group of workers caring about the development of the culture of Xiaoxi have started to analyze and survey the culture and history of the street through the method of the comprehensive community development. The study injects new life into the Xiaoxi Street. The first chapter of this study discusses Taiwan’s cultural policies, the research motivation and how to activate vacant spaces through the strategy of art. The second chapter adopts theories of eco-museum studies and analyzes cases of repurposing vacant space through the strategy of art in Taiwan as the foundation to understand the strategies of art and space planning. In addition, in literature review, this chapter also explores the Photographic Typology of the Bernd &; Hilla Becher in Kunstakademie and masterpieces of some artists in Taiwan as methods of image processing. The third chapter explores the spatial and cultural analysis and creation in the Xiaoxi Street and the analysis of the researcher’s creation. The forth chapter analyzes creations displaying in the Documenta Superior Scenic in order to explore the observation and subject matters of Taiwan’s scenery. The fifth chapter analyzing all theses and cases mentioned in the first to the forth chapter is a conclusion of this study. The chapter also provides how to develop image creation in the future. This study elaborates that the research attempts to activate vacant spaces by using art creation and image photography. The study explores different forms and contents of image creation of the researcher, and provides future perspectives of creative work.
