Full textAt the end of Antiquity, the site of Tournus is occupied by a small fortified settlement along the Saône, traversed by the Via Agrippa. After 875, its centre of gravity shifts ca. 500 m to the site of an oratory dedicated to the martyr-saint Valerian, becoming the centre of a Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Philibert. Protected from the powerful and richly endowed, the monastery acquires jurisdiction over the surrounding territory and its inhabitants. In its shadow a borough gradually develops that absorbs the former castrum. Assembling the written sources but above all the archaelogical evidence, this study begins by assessing the remains of the Antique castrum and the evolution of the site during the Early Middle Ages. There follows an analysis of the abbey site and the Medieval town, tracing their development form the 11th to the 14th century thanks to the remarkable remains of religious and civil architecture preserved in elevation and observed in occasional excavations. These two elements are presented together by successive major phases -more fully for the abbey, owing to the greater density of information relating to this site. Dating is based on intersecting criteria, particularly the development of construction techniques, and the function of the different spaces is examined for each phase. On the whole, this joint development of abbey and town at first reveals a strong monastic impetus, provoked by an identifiable reforming zeal in the 11th century and later by the power of the abbey in the 12th and 13th centuries. However, from the second half of the 13th century, a different dynamic affirms itself, more properly secular and urban

Full textThe XI-XII centuries were examined in four chapters: the political and military history, shows the multicultural agitation of this period, transitional for the Normans, the new foreign dynasty , within a context , deeply Greek Byzantine, the human geography ( language, populations, administrative geography, Italo-Greek identity, anthropological research of the Normans in the Italian territory, the law, diplomas, monetary, seals, Norman art), presents the interdependency of the historical events and human conditions, the coexistence and the interculturation of the Normans with the Greek Byzantine culture, the ecclesiastical organization, which, after the council of Melfi (1059) put the new Episcopal substructure to impose the papacy against the Greek Church, although her resistance and to end within a situation of coexistence for the two religious rites for a long time. Then, the monastic organization appears more complicated due to the beginning of the Latin monastic orders, supported from the Papacy, integrated in the Italo-Greek communities. Nevertheless, the Greek culture lasted, especially in the monarchism of southern Italy, without ignoring the development of the Latin monarchism, the result of the Norman monastic policy. Thereafter, the Hofenstaufen dynasty (1198-1266) followed, showing that the multicultural history of the region consolidates in relation with the Greek element, giving the priority to the western element. This part was equally examined through the political, ecclesiastical, monastic, notary, legal, language fields .Finally, the Angevin dynasty (1266-1442) restored the European polyphony in the territory of southern Italy, despite the willingness of the Angevin Kings to impose the monarchical model. This part was also studied in political, ecclesiastical and monastic fields. The foreign powers dominated over the centuries by contributing in a cultural mosaic such as the identity or the identity elements of the Italo-Greek communities could have coexisted with all the dominant cultures, drawing always from their own origins since the period of the domination of the Byzantine Empire. Despite the presence of various ethnic and cultural migrations on the spot, the Greek Byzantine element as a culture proved to be more determinative so that it persists over time

Full textTThis thesis about the former diocese of Arras since its restoration in 1093 till the middle of the 14th century is divided into three parts. The first one draws the geographical and historical background and resumes the history of the restoration at the expense of the imperial diocese of Cambrai. In the second one, are emphasized the permanent aspects of the religious history : the parishes, most of which in the 11th and 12th centuries change from the system of personatus to that of incorporation, their geography, their resources and their priests, the tithes, the parochial religion, but also the place taken by the regular clergy and some behavioral features (concerning violence, money and sex). The third part examines the evolutions : a more adequate episcopal administration (officiality, synodal statutes), the violent conflicts against the clerics' privileges, the withdrawal of monks and canons in their abbeys for the benefit of mendicants, the growing autonomy of the people in the church (fabrics, holy ghost tables), the remarkable place of women (beguines), the great development of foundations for masses. In the ancient and strong structures of the parish, the diocese of Arras has known deep and manifold changes between 1180 and 1240, while remaining deeply orthodox in spite of an ephemeral Cathar blaze in Arras, and it offers a number of original features typical of the Netherlands in spite of the growing attraction of Paris. There can be found in this work 225 p. Of standardized parochial notices, 78 tables and 49 maps and diagrams

Full textThe chapter of the Autun Cathedral appeared as soon as the 9th or 10th century as ore of the liveliest religions institutions in Burgundy. The 11th-13th century period represented a climatic moment in history of the chapter, there was indeed stability in its recruitment from the aristocracy and the wealth of its patrimony was cleverly administered. It was a center of prayers with an all the more growing reputation as it relied on Saint Lazarus’ relics. The Saint’s Sanctuary, now transformed into a Cathedral, would attract numerous pilgrims and would gradually be turned into a burial place. The canons would organize the liturgies and lead commemoration services that proved extremely financially rewarding. Throughout the 14th century, this well-balanced organization was shaken off as a consequence to the popes’ intervention as they now decided who would get the profits. It was also because of the Dukes of Burgundy who, as part of modernized conception of power, tried to take back some of the privileges that had been previously granted

Full textAfter being adopted by Hugues I in the late XIth century, seals gradually came into wider use in the entourage of the Count of Champagne. The corpus of seals of the members of Thibaudian lineage, of the count’s officers and administrative personnel constitutes a coherent set of 192 seal holders and 273 seals, in Champagne but also in Navarre, after the 1234 succession. The seal bears the public image of its holder, an image which is personal but also emblematic and genealogical. Affixed to the charter it authenticates, the seal impression conveys the political and cultural aspirations of the count and his entourage and bears witness to public representation strategies at the court of Champagne. The very example of Thibaud IV, affixing his own seal for the first time at the age of thirteen raises questions about, first, his representation as an armed prince although not yet dubbed, then about the commissioner of a matrix which undoubtedly partakes in the consolidation of a power at the time contested. The seal is also the prime receptacle for heraldic arms. The arms of the House of Blois-Champagne appeared in 1176 on one of Henry the Liberal’s seals, while Thibaud IV designed those of the House of Navarre. These coats of arms on administrative seals are more than mere identification signs, they are a manifestation of the count’s power, creating in the collective mind a sense of belonging to the principality. Besides, the study of the emblematic system in use among high-ranking officers casts a new light on feudal relations in medieval Champagne
