Abstract:
ObjectivesPatients with type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), but whether Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) can reduce this risk is unknown. This study investigated the effect that CHMs have on CRC risk in patients with type 2 diabetes.Research design and methodsThis cohort study used the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Research Database to identify 54 744 patients, newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, aged 20–70 years, who were receiving treatment between 1998 and 2007. From this sample, we randomly selected 14 940 CHMs users and 14 940 non-CHMs users, using propensity scores matching. All were followed through 2012 to record CRC incidence. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to compute the hazard ratio (HR) of CRC by CHMs use.ResultsDuring follow-up, 235 CHMs users and 375 non-CHMs users developed CRC, incidence rates of 1.73% and 2.47% per 1000 person-years, respectively. CHM users had a significantly reduced risk of CRC compared with non-CHM users (adjusted HR=0.71; 95% CI 0.60 to 0.84). The greatest effect was in those receiving CHMs for more than 1 year. Huang-Qin, Xue-Fu-Zhu-Yu-Tang, Shu-Jing-Huo-Xue-Tang, Liu-Wei-Di-Huang-Wan, Ji-Sheng-Shen-Qi-Wan, Gan-Lu-Yin, Shao-Yao-Gan-Cao-Tang and Ban-Xia-Xie-Xin-Tang were significantly associated with lower risk of CRC.ConclusionIntegrating CHMs into the clinical management of patients with type 2 diabetes may be beneficial in reducing the risk of CRC.

Abstract:
Abstract Since the first immune checkpoint blocker Ipilimumab was approved by US FDA in 2011, more and more immune therapeutic drugs popped up. Humanized PBMC reconstitution in immune deficient mice is becoming a good model for evaluating therapeutic antibodies, especially the BsAb with one arm of anti-CD3 that mediates immune cells and another arm targeting a tumor antigen. However, limited window of dosing regimen triggered by graft-versus-host-disease (GvHD) after 30-40 days of reconstitution, and insufficient tumor-infiltrated immune cells naturally from reconstituted circulatory system hindered the widely application of the model in immunotherapy in development of multiple immune checkpoint inhibitors or immune agonists. To overcome this, LIDE has developed a unique human PBMC-cancer cells co-inoculated model instead. In our platform, cancer-priming PBMCs were mixed with the fresh cancer cells in MatriGel, co-inoculated into NCG mice to form a huPBMC well-infiltrated tumor tissue for immunotherapy. Our platform has been successfully helped evaluate biological function of PD1, Tigit, PVRIG, CD73, CD47, CD38, CD40, GITR Antibodies, Tgfb1/PDL1 BsAb, DLL3/CD3 BsAb in multiple cancers, such as melanoma, breast cancer and lung cancer. Abstract:
Stratiolaelaps scimitus living in microhabitats (e.g., soil, humus and litter), is an important predatory mite (Zhang et al., 2022) used in biological control of pests, such as the thrips pupae (Satio and Brownbridge, 2016; Mouden et al., 2017), fungus gnat larvae (Castilho et al., 2009; Wen et al., 2017; Zhou et al., 2018) and snout moth eggs (Xie et al., 2018). It has been commercially produced (Knapp et al., 2018). However, commercial production of predatory mites inducing inbreeding is inevitable, which may lead to inbreeding inhibition and lower fitness of offspring (Slate et al., 2000), for example, the decline of vitality, fecundity, stress resistance, adaptability and retardation of growth.

Abstract:
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) divides fracture treatment into three stages. Many TCM herbs and formulas have been used to treat fractures for thousands of years. However, research regarding the Chinese herbal products (CHPs) that should be used at different periods of treatment is still lacking. This study aims to identify the CHPs that should be used at different periods of treatment as well as confirm the TCM theory of fracture periods medicine. We used prescriptions of TCM outpatients with fracture diagnoses analyzed using the Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD) from 2000 to 2015. According to the number of days between the date of the fracture and the clinic visit date, all patients were assigned to one of three groups. Patients with a date gap of 0-13 days were assigned to the early period group; those with a date gap of 14-82 days were assigned to the middle period group; and those with a date gap of 83-182 days were assigned to the late period group. We observed the average number of herbal formulas prescribed by the TCM doctor at each visit was 2.78, and the average number of single herbs prescribed was 6.47. The top three prescriptions in the early fracture period were Zheng-gu-zi-jin-dang, Shu-jing-huo-xue-tang, and Wu-ling-san. In the middle fracture period, the top three formulas were Zheng-gu-zi-jin-dang, Shu-jing-huo-xue-tang, and Zhi-bai-di-huang-wan. In the late fracture period, the top three formulas were Shu-jing-huo-xue-tang, Gui-lu-er-xian-jiao, and Du-huo-ji-sheng-tang. The main single herbs used in the early fracture period were Yan-hu-suo, Gu-sui-bu, and Dan-shen. From the middle to the late period, the most prescribed single herbs were Xu-duan, Gu-sui-bu, and Yan-hu-suo. We concluded that the results showed that the CGRD utilization pattern roughly meets the TCM theory at different fracture periods.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the expansion of mass immunization in China during the calamitous period from 1945 to 1949. The reestablishment of biological research and production bases in the newly repossessed eastern cities solidified the authority of Chinese immunologists such as Tang Feifan, Wei Xi, Xie Shaowen, and others as prominent contributors to Chinese public health. At the same time, as the capacities of state administrations were stretched and strained, new dialogues emerged over the role of coercive immunization, its relationship to legitimate governance, and the ability of microbiology to contribute to national reconstruction. Medical researchers and clinicians especially championed one vaccine at this time: the BCG immunization against tuberculosis. The immunization itself proved difficult to produce and implement, but its promotion reflected the changes that the war with Japan had wrought in China's public health system and its adoption of mass immunization programs. Nationalists and Communists alike embraced the vaccines that these researchers developed and manufactured. The chapter then looks at vaccination policies and practices during the Chinese Civil War.

Abstract:
This study is an investigation of the complement constructions of manner and state (CM/S, e.g. ta de zi xie de hao‘s/he writes character well’) based on a corpus of written Chinese. We find that CM/S have preferred forms and functions. Formally speaking, a monosyllabic verb, preferably bian ‘change, become’, basic action verbs, or psychological state verbs tend to co-occur with complements of adjectival, clausal, or idiomatic expressions. CM/S are argued to be an assessment device indexing speaker evaluative stances. The loaded affective meanings, we contend, account for the larger and more complex forms than their standard assessment counterparts. The implications of these findings on Chinese syntactic research and on L2 learning are explored.

Seamless integration does not mean that the RATs are converged into a single network. Instead the services offered by the existing RATs are integrated as shown in Figure 1. Convergence technology is a technology that combines different existing access technologies such as cellular, cordless, WLAN-type systems, short-range wireless connectivity, and wired systems on a common platform to complement each other in an optimum way and to provide a multiplicity of possibilities for current and future services and applications to users in a single terminal. After creating a converged heterogeneous architecture, the next step is to perform a common radio resource management (RRM) (Magnusson, Lundsjo, Sachs, & Wallentin, 2004). RRM helps to maximize the use of available spectrum resources, support mixed traffic types with different QoS requirements, increase trunking capacity and grade of service (GoS), improve spectrum usage by selecting the best RAT based on radio conditions (e.g., path loss), minimize inter-system handover latency, preserve QoS across multiple RATs, and reduce signaling delay.

Abstract:
In the 1920s and 1930s China was swept by a “love-letter fever,” a craze for real and fictional romantic letters (qingshu). One of this trend’s most important representatives was the notoriously frivolous writer Zhang Yiping (1902-1946). This chapter places Zhang’s retranslation of Stefan Zweig’s Letter from an Unknown Woman of 1933 against the background of the young Chinese Republic’s ongoing struggles for modernity, when a multitude of theories on literature and its social functions were competing with each other. It also shows how Zhang used the prestige of a European writer in his feud with Lu Xun (1881-1936), one of China’s most influential writers. Taking the Chinese discourses as a starting point, a close reading of Letter from an Unknown Woman concludes the chapter. Beyond the framework of epistolary fiction and the love-letter genre the work reveals complex narrative strategies and literary dimensions which significantly complicate existing interpretations of Zweig’s most famous novella.

A range of biological activity was observed for the group of 3,6-anhydro-2-deoxy hexosides, of which 3 is representative, isolated from Sauropus rostratus. Wei-Jia Xie and Xiao-Ming Wu of China Pharmaceutical University prepared (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 5004) 3 by the dealkylative cyclization of 1 to 2. (+)-Ipomeamarone 6 is a phytoalexin isolated from mold-damaged sweet potatoes. Yoshinosuke Usuki of Osaka City University assembled (Chem. Lett. 2014, 43, 1882) 6 by the diastereoselective cyclization of 4 to 5. Hiromichi Fujioka of Osaka University protected (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 3680) the enone of 7 by the conjugate addition of triphenylphosphine. Diastereoselective reduction of the other ketone followed by deprotection of the enone and cyclization led to 8, that was hydrogenated to decytospolide A 9. En route to cytospolide P 12, Rajib Kumar Goswami of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science had planned (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 7689) the ring-closing metathesis of 10. This failed, but cyclization of the corresponding silyl ether to 11 was successful with the second-generation Hoveyda catalyst. Rongbiao Tong of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology set (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 6987) the absolute configuration of (+)-didemniserinolipid B 15 by Sharpless asymmetric osmylation of the alkene 13. Oxidative Achmatowicz rearrangement/bicycloketalization then delivered 14. Xuegong She of Lanzhou University observed (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 4440) remarkable diastereoselectivity in the reductive cyclization of 16 to 17. Oxidation of 17 led to regioselective cyclization to gymnothelignan N 18.

Abstract:
Privacy-preserving deep neural network (DNN) inference remains an intriguing problem even after the rapid developments of different communities. One challenge is that cryptographic techniques such as homomorphic encryption (HE) do not natively support non-linear computations (e.g., sigmoid). A recent work, BAYHENN (Xie et al., IJCAI'19), considers HE over the Bayesian neural network (BNN). The novelty lies in "meta-prediction" over a few noisy DNNs. The claim was that the clients can get intermediate outputs (to apply non-linear function) but are still prevented from learning the exact model parameters, which was justified via the widely-used learning-with-error (LWE) assumption (with Gaussian noises as the error). This paper refutes the security claim of BAYHENN via both theoretical and empirical analyses. We formally define a security game with different oracle queries capturing two realistic threat models. Our attack assuming a semi-honest adversary reveals all the parameters of single-layer BAYHENN, which generalizes to recovering the whole model that is "as good as" the BNN approximation of the original DNN, either under the malicious adversary model or with an increased number of oracle queries. This shows the need for rigorous security analysis ("the noise introduced by BNN can obfuscate the model" fails -- it is beyond what LWE guarantees) and calls for the collaboration between cryptographers and machine-learning experts to devise practical yet provably-secure solutions.

Abstract:
Temperature changes caused by latent transformation heats are an integral part of the behavior of shape memory alloys and inevitably couple the thermal and the mechanical fields. This general behavior is covered by the Mu¨ller-Achenbach-Seelecke (MAS) model. Its versatility has been documented extensively in the literature. In the original formulation the MAS model is restricted to uniaxial states of stress in a SMA, which limits its application to cases where such stress states prevail, such as axial loading in wires and trusses, as well as pure beam bending, pure torsion and shrink-fit problems. Unreliable results, however are expected under arbitrary multiaxial loading conditions. To overcome this limitation we present an extension of the model capable of arbitrary stress/strain/temperature states in 3D. Our model adopts ideas presented by Xie but employs a different non-convex free energy function. Rate equations are employed to model temperature or stress/strain induced transformations between austenite and eight variants of martensite present in the model. As the MAS model, the multi-variant model is capable of fully-coupled thermo-mechanical processes which is shown by simulations of temperature-induced processes, quasiplasticity and pseudoelasticity under variable load directions. At the present level of sophistication, the model is restricted to single crystalline SMA. All examples are explained by the use of a standalone model implementation. The model is intended for future implementation into the finite-element-method environment ABAQUS™ to provide a powerful tool useful in the framework of engineering design studies, especially in situations which require non-isothermal conditions and phase transitions.

Abstract:
The wireless sensor networks (WSNs) field is one of the emerging and fast-growing fields in the scientific world. This has brought about the development of low-cost, and multifunctional sensor nodes for easy and secure dissemination of information. Nonetheless, the problem of sensor nodes running out of energy quickly has been an issue. Many energyefficient routing algorithms have been proposed to solve this problem and preserve the longevity of the network. Most of the recent papers have shown so many protocols mainly designed to minimize energy consumption in the network but there are some limitations with regards to the area of operation and the optimization decisions. This paper proposes an Energy Efficiency Hierarchical Routing Technique (EEHRT) which is based on LEACH protocol to extend the lifespan of a WSN. In this work, the proposed Energy Efficient Hierarchical Routing Technique selects cluster heads based on the prediction of transmission energy through the shortest distance to the base station. Our approach rotates the role of Cluster Heads (CHs), and optimizes the CH selection by the prediction of energy transmission in every round and aggregating data before transmission to the BS. The important features which include member nodes formation and rotation, cluster head selection and rotation, and cluster optimization of our proposed hierarchical routing technique in transmitting data to the base station are analyzed and emphasized. In ASME 2016 35th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2016-54040.

Abstract:
Low recovery factor is identified as the main problem encountered in the heavy oil production from a strong bottom-water-drive reservoir. Unlike for conventional oils, where the expected recovery from such reservoirs could be very high — in excess of 50 percent, the expected recovery factor in heavy oil water-driven reservoirs is less than 20 percent. In this study, a qualitative analysis of the well productivity mechanisms specific for heavy oil reservoirs with bottom water is provided. The objective is to understand what make the production of heavy oil different to that of lighter oils, identify the mechanism that mostly hamper the well’s productivity and recovery efficiency. Many believe the by-passed oil due to water coning is the major cause of low ultimate oil recovery in heavy oils underlain by strong bottom water. However, in this paper, we identify another important parameter affecting recovery efficiency in such reservoirs, which hasn’t been recognized by others and its effect on recovery process is significant. The mathematic modeling and numerical study lead to a new finding: due to the aquifer’s influence on pressure response in reservoir, a no-flow boundary at xi is established, where xi is often much smaller than that of the actual reservoir size xe. The oil out to the distance xi is immobile and become bypassed oil, which accounts for large amount of the OOIP. Even the water coning can be effective controlled; the ultimate oil recovery factor will not be improved significantly if the small mobilized oil zone can’t be enlarged. An analytical solution is derived in this paper to calculate the actual drainage radius. The validity of this analytical solution is confirmed by numerical simulation runs.

Abstract:
The development of an evolutionary optimisation method and its application to the design of an advanced composite structure is discussed. Composite materials are increasingly being used in various fields, and so optimisation of such structures would be advantageous. From among the various methods available, one particular method, known as Evolutionary Structural Optimisation (ESO), is shown here. ESO is an empirical method, based on the concept of removing and adding material from a structure, in order to create an optimum shape. Much work has been done on ESO by various researchers. V. Young, G.P Steven, Y.M. Xie and O.M. Querin extended the basic ESO algorithm to the addition of elements and multiple load cases. S. Savas, M. Ulker, and M.P. Saka utilised ESO to create structures with a uniform stress distribution. Both ESO algorithms were applied to isotropic structures. The basic principle of ESO is to remove material from the model, based on certain criteria, stress being typical. The method can also add material back, where it may become necessary to reinforce the structure, which may happen when excessive material is removed. The model undergoes an iterative process of analysis and modification, the cycle continuing until certain conditions are met, ranging from weight reduction to stress limits. The objective of the current research is to create an ESO method, utilising MSC.Patran/Nastran, to optimise composite structures. The final algorithm created is simple, in order to improve efficiency and reduce total analysis runtimes. The algorithm modifies the properties of the element, rather than removing it from the structure completely. This ensures that the connectivity of the elements remains intact. Elements are selected for removal or addition based on a driving criterion. The composite structures are modelled as a core and shell. The core consists of 3D elements with orthotropic properties, and the skin is represented by non-removable 2D shell elements. These shell elements bear the loads and boundary conditions. They also keep the external shape of the model, which is important for aerodynamic structures. The models were run through the ESO algorithm until the final optimised structure remained. A tailfin of an aircraft was used as an application example. The aim was to reduce weight and create an optimised design for manufacture. The criterion for the analyses undertaken was stress based. The results of this research are presented in the paper.

Abstract:
In the original proposal we planned to focus on two proteins related to the actin cytoskeleton: TCH2, a touch-induced calmodulin-like protein which was found by us to interact with the IQ domain of myosin VIII, ATM1; and ERD10, a dehydrin which was found to associate with actin filaments. As reported previously, no other dehydrins were found to interact with actin filaments. In addition so far we were unsuccessful in confirming the interaction of TCH2 with myosin VIII using other methods. In addition, no other myosin light chain candidates were found in a yeast two hybrid survey. Nevertheless we have made a significant progress in our studies of the role of myosins in plant cells. Plant myosins have been implicated in various cellular activities, such as cytoplasmic streaming (1, 2), plasmodesmata function (3-5), organelle movement (6-10), cytokinesis (4, 11, 12), endocytosis (4, 5, 13-15) and targeted RNA transport (16). Plant myosins belong to two main groups of unconventional myosins: myosin XI and myosin VIII, both closely related to myosin V (17-19). The Arabidopsis myosin family contains 17 members: 13 myosin XI and four myosin VIII (19, 20). The data obtained from our research of myosins was published in two papers acknowledging BARD funding. To address whether specific myosins are involved with the motility of specific organelles, we cloned the cDNAs from neck to tail of all 17 Arabidopsis myosins. These were fused to GFP and used as dominant negative mutants that interact with their cargo but are unable to walk along actin filaments. Therefore arrested organelle movement in the presence of such a construct shows that a particular myosin is involved with the movement of that particular organelle. While no mutually exclusive connections between specific myosins and organelles were found, based on overexpression of dominant negative tail constructs, a group of six myosins (XIC, XIE, XIK, XI-I, MYA1 and MYA2) were found to be more important for the motility of Golgi bodies and mitochondria in Nicotiana benthamiana and Nicotiana tabacum (8). Further deep and thorough analysis of myosin XIK revealed a potential regulation by head and tail interaction (Avisar et al., 2011). A similar regulatory mechanism has been reported for animal myosin V and VIIa (21, 22). In was shown that myosin V in the inhibited state is in a folded conformation such that the tail domain interacts with the head domain, inhibiting its ATPase and actinbinding activities. Cargo binding, high Ca2+, and/or phosphorylation may reduce the interaction between the head and tail domains, thus restoring its activity (23). Our collaborative work focuses on the characterization of the head tail interaction of myosin XIK. For this purpose the Israeli group built yeast expression vectors encoding the myosin XIK head. In addition, GST fusions of the wild-type tail as well as a tail mutated in the amino acids that mediate head to tail interaction. These were sent to the US group who is working on the isolation of recombinant proteins and performing the in vitro assays. While stress signals involve changes in Ca2+ levels in plants cells, the cytoplasmic streaming is sensitive to Ca2+. Therefore plant myosin activity is possibly regulated by stress. This finding is directly related to the goal of the original proposal.
