This thesis focuses on the transformation and imitation of Shi Shuo Xin Yu during the Ming-Qing transition. This thesis argues that the authors of the Shi Shuo imitations during the Ming-Qing transition consciously transformed both the form and the inner values of their works from the original Shi Shuo Xin Yu in order to serve their purposes of writing the book. Chapter 1 identifies a list of works of the Shi Shuo imitations during Ming and Qing dynasty, based on the definition as proposed in this chapter. From the list of works, 7 texts completed during Ming Qing Transition are identified, with brief accounts of these works and their authors included in the chapter. Chapter 2 first discusses the objectives of these texts. Based on the objectives of these books, this chapter further discusses the form of Shi Shuo imitations during the Ming-Qing transition, with an emphasis on the change in the nonclementure of the chapters, as compared to the original Shi Shuo Xin Yu. Chapter 3 focuses on the topic “Virtuous Conduct”, and discusses the various conducts such as filial piety, loyalty, incorruptibility and frugality as portrayed by the Shi Shuo imitations during Ming-Qing transition. By comparing the views contained in the Shi Shuo imitations to those contained within Shi Shuo Xin Yu, it is clear that the imitations offer different viewpoints as compared to the original Shi Shuo Xin Yu Chapter 4 focuses on the topics “Affairs of the State” and “Reclusion and Disengagement”. The first part of the chapter deals with the different political viewpoints as expressed in Shi Shuo Xin Yu and the Shi Shuo imitations during the Ming-Qing transition. The second part then focuses on the reclusion style displayed in Shi Shuo imitations during the Ming-Qing transition, which is vastly different from that in Shi Shuo Xin Yu. Chapter 5 focuses on the topic “Worthy Beauties”, and discussed on the transformations of the types of women seen in Shi Shuo imitations during Ming-Qing transition, and how it varies differently from the original Shi Shuo Xin Yu. Chapter 6 concludes, with the limitations of these Shi Shuo imitations in fulfilling their writing objectives briefly evaluated.

By combining semiotics methods with existing research on Communist Party of China''s propaganda and Benedict Anderson''s nationalism theory, this research analyzes a political advertising campaign of CPC named Jiang-Wen-Ming-Shu-Xin-Feng, which is strongly promoted by the propaganda department. Analysis found that the advertising campaign shows the propagators'' strong preference to symbols about Chinese traditional culture in the areas of text symbol, image symbol and artistic genre symbol. In the advertising campaign, the emphasis on national identity obviously exceeds the emphasis on loyalty to the party, which reflects the changing of CPC''s propaganda strategy as a ruling party instead of a revolutionary party. In the frame of Anderson''s nationalism theory, this research shows that CPC uses a typical "official nationalism" strategy in the advertising campaign. The propagators'' purpose behind this strategy is "marketing dictatorship", which would help CPC reinforce its authority and reign, and this phenomenon is closely related to the current social environment in China that filled with strong nationalism and patriotism atmosphere. In addition, this research found that there is significant connection between the symbols frequently appeared in the advertising campaign and the social myths nowadays in China. Through analysis, researcher found that, while the dominative authority like CPC uses the existing social myths, it also produces some new social myths in propaganda. There is the two-way interaction between dominate authority and social myths. Finally, this research found that, in the area of semiology and propaganda theories'' political application, ideology doesn''t always play the dominating role. The ideologies as discursive formations in the "hegemony" are only tools used by the ideologies of existing power structure. Even contradictory discursive formations, like nationalism and communism, could be used by the dominate power''s ideology of CPC''s at the same time if they were helpful for CPC to reinforce its domination.

“Tales of the World” is a summative term for the voice and the face of an era. In the unprecedented Shi Shuo wave in Ming dynasty lies the key to understanding the mindset of the Ming people, or so I will argue. My thesis looks specifically at “the Wu Zhong Literati” in sixteenth-century Ming dynasty and aims to bring out the pervading Shi Shuo elements in the various aspects of their mundane life. Their poetry, essays, and Shi Shuo Imitation will be discussed. Four themes stand out in my thesis: (1) Ming Shi life style, (2) Shi Shuo Imitation, (3) literary theory of the Revivalist School, and (4) allusion. I will focus specifically on analyzing how the Wu Zhong Literati use Shi Shuo to project their self-identity, literary taste, view of life, and emotional identification. The past relevant research on Shi Shuo Imitation tends to be lopsided. My thesis aims to correct for this by examining the original classic book of Shi Shuo in a more comprehensive and deeper way. I will elaborate on the multiple facets of the interaction between Shi Shuo and its readers in Ming dynasty. The main readership of Shi Shuo includes the Wu Zhong Literati, people such as Wang Chong, Yuan Jiong, Huang Xingzeng, He Liangjun, Wang Shizhen and Wang Shimao. Most of these people share the common characteristics of failing the imperial examination and becoming marginalized mundane literati who were kept out of the doors of the bureaucratic system. The rare exceptions, Wang Shizhen and Wang Shimao, though being in the system, still remain in a politically nonchalant mindset, and thus still bear close resemblance in this regard to those Wu Zhong Literati influenced by Shi Shuo. The structure of my thesis is as follows. The introduction defines the topic, surveys the previous relevant research, and explicates the research purpose and methodology. Chapter two aims to argue that the Wu Zhong Literati are the main readership of Shi Shuo. I shall do this by tracing how the relevant literatures disseminate and by delineating the scope of common bond amongst the Wu Zhong Literati. The third chapter will use Wang Chong, He Liangjun, and Wang Shizhen as examples to illustrate how the Wu Zhong Literati regard Wei Jin Ming Shi as role models. Chapter 4 will focus on two works of Shi Shuo Imitation: He Shi Yu Lim and Shi Shuo Xin Yu Bu. The former work explores the meaning of an essay on man, while the latter analyzes Shi Shuo Bu as well as the roles of Wang Shizhen and his brother in the process of dissemination. Chapter five elaborates on the revival of Shi Shuo and its relations with the literary circles. The angle employed here will be that of the literary theory of the Revivalist School.

There is an unobvious origin context between Chongxuanxue Taoism and Confucianism of Song-Ming dynasty. The inherited relations play an important role in Confucianism and Taoism intersection in Middle Age(AD3-11).This trail is the nature expression of noumenon instead of xing(性)--the discourse tradition from pre-Qin, Strengthening the Independent Status of xin(心). In the forces of Buddhism, Taoism generates one unique theoretical form from Pumping high the occult experience. That is ‘twofold mystery method’ in Chongxuanxue. The ‘from experience upto theoretizing’ Chinese thoughts special usage is Affirmative to this world, totally Different from Buddhism Negative to this world, regardless of they two using the same ‘Negative’ method on the surface. They are two different philosophy in any respect. The thought ‘from experience upto theoretizing’ expressing in Chongxuanxue is ‘twofold mystery method’, reaching Chinese dialectical summit, turning into the one of the main sourse of Confucianism of Song-Ming dynasty. Different from Chongxuanxue’s experience practice respect, Confucianism of Song-Ming dynasty is totally theoretical, and creating kong-fu. There are two argumentation points in the thesis. One is the substance of xin in Chongxuanxue as the source of the mind philosophy in Confucianism of Song-Ming dynasty. Two is revealing two-fold dialectical thought in Chongxuanxue impacting on Confucianism of Song-Ming dynasty in developing duality of li-qi、xin-li Noumenon, the former definitely plays roles in construction of method and connotation. On the basis of the two arguments, trying to reveal the ontological association about xin(心) between these two Chinese important theories.
