Full textThis archaeological study of the building of the abbey church of Sainte-Foy in Conques, which is mainly focused on facing stones, has a double objective: on the one hand, to discern, as much as possible, material indications likely to enlighten the progress of construction work; on the other hand, to understand technical and economic dimensions and, more generally, the site organisation of this major Romanesque building project. Archaeological data, such as masonry discontinuities, distribution of different petrographic types, stone-cutting techniques, masons’ marks and putlog holes, make it possible to propose a construction phasing, which offers an independent and efficient framework for study of the sculpture of Sainte-Foy. The sculpture evolution is thus traced, through a global stylistic approach. Artistic transfers between Conques, Santiago de Compostela and Auvergne have also been better defined, which leads to reconsider the chronology of Romanesque churches of Auvergne, especially as Conques and Auvergne were located in the same technical geography during the second half of the eleventh century

Full textTThis thesis about the former diocese of Arras since its restoration in 1093 till the middle of the 14th century is divided into three parts. The first one draws the geographical and historical background and resumes the history of the restoration at the expense of the imperial diocese of Cambrai. In the second one, are emphasized the permanent aspects of the religious history : the parishes, most of which in the 11th and 12th centuries change from the system of personatus to that of incorporation, their geography, their resources and their priests, the tithes, the parochial religion, but also the place taken by the regular clergy and some behavioral features (concerning violence, money and sex). The third part examines the evolutions : a more adequate episcopal administration (officiality, synodal statutes), the violent conflicts against the clerics' privileges, the withdrawal of monks and canons in their abbeys for the benefit of mendicants, the growing autonomy of the people in the church (fabrics, holy ghost tables), the remarkable place of women (beguines), the great development of foundations for masses. In the ancient and strong structures of the parish, the diocese of Arras has known deep and manifold changes between 1180 and 1240, while remaining deeply orthodox in spite of an ephemeral Cathar blaze in Arras, and it offers a number of original features typical of the Netherlands in spite of the growing attraction of Paris. There can be found in this work 225 p. Of standardized parochial notices, 78 tables and 49 maps and diagrams

Full textRelations between death and the medieval church have been explored by European historians since the beginning of the 20th century. They are here analysed within the 22 dioceses of « Provence » during the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries. Using a large and varied documentation, essentially produced by cathedral chapters, we propose to study death as a framework for the relations between the cathedral clergy and urban medieval societies. As a prospect common to everyone, death could be used by clerics in order to build discourses promoting a tighter control of the Church over society, for instance through the liturgy of the Dead or the concept of the « Good Christian Death ». Especially through anniversaries, Death also provided them with an opportunity to establish spiritual and material relationships with an enlarged community of laymen and ecclesiastics and was therefore instrumental in involving bischops, canons and secular clerics into the political and economic life of the counties of Provence and Forcalquier. Finally, Death gives historians of the Middle Ages a unique insight into the life and organisation of the Provençale Ecclesia over three centuries of intense economic and political evolutions. This study aims to use thanatology in order to broaden our historical perspectives regarding Provençal cathedrals and clerics in the Middle-Ages

Full textBenedictine monachism was firmly established in Berry, and thrived there throughout the XIth and XIIth centuries. In those times, numerous were the religious edifices which depended on saint Benedict's rule. Nowadays, some of them constitute particularly noticeable examples of romanesque art. Between 613 and 1093, thirteen abbeys were founded. They ruled over three hundred and twenty one churches scattered all over Berry. The architectural analysis of the formers throws light on recurring structural as well as functional elements which seem less obvious in the latters. For that matter, considering the non benedictine edifices of the area shows that they bear a close relation to the churches on which this study focuses. We can therefore infer that there are no artistic characteristics specific to that order, whose role was probably limited to spreading the influence of such great monasteries as Cluny or Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire
