Abstract:
“Guanxi” is a very special and important factor in Chinese traditional agricultural society and economic activities, and it has an important impact on all participants in the agricultural supply chain. Taking four dimensional attributes of guanxi—renqing (reciprocal favour exchange), mianzi (face), ganqing (emotional attachment), and xinren(trust) as the endogenous latent variables—this research established and empirically analyzed the structural equation model (SEM) of guanxi, knowledge sharing, and supply chain performance (SCP). Research found that renqing, mianzi, ganqing, and xinren have positive and significant effects on knowledge sharing, among which ganqing is the most significant factor, and renqing, mianzi, ganqing, and xinren have a positive impact on SCP through the mediating role of knowledge sharing. The influence mechanism of four dimension of guanxi on knowledge sharing and SCP and the influence of measurement variables on latent variable were analyzed. The results provide guidance for business decision making in the agricultural supply chain.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this research was to find out the impact of GRX scale (ganqing, renqing, and xinren) on a non-Chinese working environment. Thus, to apply and ascertain the effect of the three dimensions of guanxi on employees’ engagement and, eventually, their job performance in an African working environment. This research used social exchange theory to explain the relationship between supervisors and their subordinates. The research data comprises 530 respondents who were randomly chosen from seven organizations. Smart-PLS 3.2.8 was the primary instrument used to analyze the data. The finding indicated that renqing, synonymous with mutual sharing or need for reciprocity, was highly significant with employee engagement and job performance. Hence, a win-win outcome is achieved whenever employers exhibit genuine concern and care for their employees. Additionally, there was a negative relationship between ganqing (emotional attachment) and employee engagement. This revealed that making decisions based on personal relationships will negatively affect employees’ engagement and job performance. This research adds to the literature by revealing that guanxi is applicable in non-Chinese workplaces.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic review of the extant empirical body of knowledge regarding the impact of Guanxi on international Business-to-Business (B-to-B) relationships. Design/methodology/approach After the collection and refinement of studies that appeared in marketing, business and management literature during 1995-2018 period, a systematic review was conducted to discover the current situation and future research directions on the subject. Findings Theoretically, vast majority of the reviewed studies lacked a theoretical foundation, with the remainder anchored primarily on the resource-based view, social network theory and social exchange theory. Methodologically, Ganqing, Xinren and Mianzi are the most frequently investigated dimensions, whereas Renqing is the least investigated dimension. Data are mostly obtained from both Chinese and Western counterparts through survey and analyzed through univariate and multivariate data analysis techniques. Empirically, extant research focused on many diverse outcomes including trust, financial performance, cooperation, satisfaction, time orientation, opportunism and liability of foreignness, while under-examining the drives of Guanxi. Research limitations/implications This study provides a synthesis of extant line of research on the subject that are published in peer-reviewed international journals, which publish research in English. A meta-analysis may be conducted for providing a further detailed framework. Originality/value This study contributes to international marketing literature by providing an in-depth and synthesized inventory of knowledge to scholars; deriving a comprehensive analysis of theoretical foundations, methodological approaches and findings addressed by scholars in the field; noticing theoretical, methodological and empirical gaps to be examined; and providing future research directions.

Abstract:
PurposeThe implementation of sustainable supply chain management (SCM) calls for an acknowledgement of uncertainty inherent in complex environment. Confucianist society forms social networks in Confucianist society, called guanxi networks, influence economic behaviours and business practices in the workplace. The purpose of this study is to explore how these social networks influence the implementation of sustainable SCM. In doing so, this study aims to critically investigate the constructs of guanxi networks, their impact on flow of supply chain capital and how this leverages the implementation of sustainable SCM.Design/methodology/approachTwo systematic literature reviews are conducted to understand the constructs of social networks in Confucianist culture and their impacts on the flow of supply chain capitals. The reviews also analyse evidence related to the economic, social and environmental practices to reveal the current state of the literature and research gaps. Propositions and a framework are developed to support future research in this area.FindingsThe constructs of ganqing, renqing, xinren and mianzi in guanxi networks have expanded the contexts of social networks in Western literature. Guanxi networks increase the flow of supply chain capital and generate trust between players, thus enhancing capabilities to implement sustainable SCM. Guanxi networks also create the mechanism of network governance with which to increase sustainable SCM implementation under the institutional logics of sustainability.Research limitations/implicationsThe conceptual framework and justification are based on the reviews of current studies in the field. Future empirical study is encouraged to test the propositions, both in Confucianist culture and other countries with culture of social networks.Originality/valueSocial networks are socially constructed concepts. The constructs of guanxi networks revealed in this study have developed the knowledge of Western-based social network theory. Besides, arguments from a social network perspective provide an alternative answer to explain increased behavioural commitment and companies’ investment in sustainable SCM. This study helps practitioners understand the logic of this social norm and to use it to maximise their operation outputs, including sustainable SCM implementation.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to propose and test a model examining the relationship of guanxi with new product performance and customer loyalty in the context of internationalizing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in China. Social network theory and information processing theory provide the theoretical lenses for this research. Design/methodology/approach Guanxi with suppliers, distributors and customers is measured as a second-order construct consisting of ganqing, renqing, and xinren/xinyong. Research hypotheses are tested using survey data (n = 212) gathered in Anhui and Shandong Provinces. The data are analyzed using smart partial least squares technique. Findings The findings reinforce existing studies, which show that a locally based social network can be extended to the success of early-internationalizing SMEs. Results also suggest that the relationship between guanxi and customer loyalty is stronger when technical uncertainty is low and when market uncertainty is low rather than high. Research limitations/implications The data were gathered from the point of view of the SMEs and may not accurately reflect the perspective of the foreign customer. The findings may not generalize beyond the regions surveyed. The study does not differentiate among the type of supply chain member, and the location of the supply chain member was not measured. Practical implications Although guanxi is typically viewed as being localized within a country, guanxi with suppliers, distributors and customers can provide information and resources needed for successful export products. Second, internationalizing SMEs must understand that even though guanxi has positive impact on new product performance which directly leads to customer loyalty only when uncertainty is low. Originality/value Although guanxi has been studied, there are a limited number of empirical studies of guanxi in a supply chain context and most focus on buyers’ guanxi with suppliers. The research on guanxi with customers and distributors is also limited. This research addresses this gap by focusing on guanxi with suppliers, distributors and customers.

Abstract:
We present XIndex, which is a concurrent index library and designed for fast queries. It includes a concurrent ordered index (XIndex-R) and a concurrent hash index (XIndex-H). Similar to a recent proposal of the learned index, the indexes in XIndex use learned models to optimize index efficiency. Compared with the learned index, for the ordered index, XIndex-R is able to handle concurrent writes effectively and adapts its structure according to runtime workload characteristics. For the hash index, XIndex-H is able to avoid the resize operation blocking concurrent writes. Furthermore, the indexes in XIndex can index string keys much more efficiently than the learned index. We demonstrate the advantages of XIndex with YCSB, TPC-C (KV), which is a TPC-C-inspired benchmark for key-value stores, and micro-benchmarks. Compared with ordered indexes of Masstree and Wormhole, XIndex-R achieves up to 3.2× and 4.4× performance improvement on a 24-core machine. Compared with hash indexes of Intel TBB HashMap, XIndex-H achieves up to 3.1× speedup. The performance further improves by 91% after adding the optimizations on indexing string keys. The library is open-sourced. 1

Abstract:
As satellite rainfall data has the advantages of wide spatial coverage and high spatial and temporal resolution, it is an important means to solve the problem of flood forecasting in ungauged basins (PUB). In this paper, two catchments under different conditions, Xin’an River Basin and Wuding River Basin, were selected as the representatives of humid and arid regions, respectively, and four kinds of satellite rainfall data of TRMM 3B42RT, TRMM 3B42V7, GPM IMERG Early, and GPM IMERG Late were selected to evaluate the monitoring accuracy of rainfall processes in the two catchments on hourly scale. Then, these satellite rainfall data were respectively integrated with the gauged data. HEC-HMS (The Hydrologic Engineering Center's-Hydrologic Modeling System) model was calibrated and validated to simulate flood events in the two catchments. Then, improvement effect of the rainfall merging on flood forecasting was evaluated. According to the research results, in most cases, the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients of the simulated streamflow from initial TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) satellite rainfall data were negative at the two catchments. By merging gauge and TRMM rainfall, the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient is mostly around 0.7, and the correlation coefficient is as high as 0.9 for streamflow simulation in the Xin'an River basin. For the streamflow simulated by merging gauge and GPM rainfall in Wuding River basin, the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient is about 0.8, and the correlation coefficient is more than 0.9, which indicate good flood forecasting accuracy. Generally, higher performance statistics were obtained in the Xin'an River Basin than the Wuding River Basin. Compared with the streamflow simulated by the initial satellite rainfalls, significant improvement was obtained by the merged rainfall data, which indicates a good prospect for application of satellite rainfall in hydrological forecasting. In the future, it is necessary to further improve the monitoring accuracy of satellite rainfall products and to develop the method of merging multi-source rainfall data, so as to better applications in PUB and other hydrological researches.

Abstract:
Xinian is a recently published bamboo manuscript from the collection of Qinghua (Tsinghua) University. It is the lengthiest, most detailed historical text unearthed in recent decades. The text narrates major events from the history of the state of Chu, its rivals, and its allies from the beginning of the Western Zhou period to the early fourth century bce. In this introductory article I argue the following: first, both the language and the content of Xinian indicate that this text was based on earlier historical sources from the states of Chu and Jin, in addition to sources from within the Zhou royal domain; second, the authors’ utilization of their primary sources differs markedly from those observable in Zuo zhuan (with which Xinian has many overlapping parts) and in later collections of anecdotes; and third, Xinian may represent a heretofore unknown genre of “informative history.” In addition, I explore the new perspectives that Xinian sheds on early Qin and Chu history.

Abstract:
Drought is a worldwide concerned issue which causes huge losses in agriculture, economic and damages in natural ecosystems. The precise assessment of drought evolution characteristics is essential for agricultural water management and drought resistance, while such work is rarely reported. Thus, eight meteorological stations located within the Southwest Guizhou Autonomous Prefecture (SGAP) were selected, and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used to assess the drought evolution characteristics. The results revealed that the drought occurrences number in Pu'an station was the largest (23 droughts), and the average drought duration in Xingren station was the longest (48.75 months). Moreover, the drought characteristics of the eight stations have account for the largest proportion under normal conditions, was more than 60%, the frequency of drought disaster occurring in Xingren is the highest (30.05%), followed by Wangmo (23.73%). The results of this study will provide theoretical guidance for drought resistance and agricultural production in Southwest Guizhou Autonomous Prefecture of China.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Xinian or Annalistic History is one of an important collection of ancient bamboo texts donated anonymously to Qinghua University in 2008. The Xinian covers events from the history of the Western Zhou dynasty (1045–771 b.c.e.), through the Spring and Autumn Period (771–475 b.c.e.) and into the Warring States era (475–221 b.c.e.). Since the first publication of this manuscript in 2011, it has been the subject of much research, though this has usually been focused on the sections which have important parallels within the transmitted tradition. This article proposes a new way of understanding the Xinian, as a compilation produced from at least five source texts, and provides a complete translation of the entire text. Furthermore, although the contents of the Xinian are frequently at variance with the transmitted tradition, in particular the account of events given in the Zuozhuan, in some instances it may prove the more reliable source. The Xinian also provides some information concerning the history of the early Warring States era that helps to explain events in this generally badly documented era.

Abstract:
Abstract. As part of the PRIDE-PRD2006 intensive campaign, atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) measurements were performed in Qingyuan, Panyu, and Xinken over the Pearl River Delta (PRD) on 1–30 July 2006. During the summer, the surface winds over the PRD are generally controlled by the south, usually with vertical wind shear at a height of approximately 800 m. Subsidence and precipitation from a tropical cyclone affects the air quality of the PRD. Under subsidence, wind speed in the ABL and the height of the ABL decrease and result in high-level concentrations. When the background wind speed is small or calm, the wind profile in Panyu and Xinken changes dramatically with height, which is perhaps caused by local circulation, such as sea-land breezes. To better understand the ABL of the PRD, simulations that used the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model were utilized to analyze the ABL characteristics over the PRD. Based on three types of weather condition simulations (i.e., subsidence days, rainy days, and sunny days), the WRF model revealed that the simulated temperature and wind fields in these three cases were moderately consistent with the measurements. The results showed that diurnal variations of the ABL height on subsidence days and sunny days were obvious, but diurnal variations of the ABL height on rainy days were not apparent. The ABL is obviously affected by local circulation, and the ABL features are different at various stations. A simulation focused on a high pollution episode during the subsidence days on 12–15 July 2006, occurred under high-pressure conditions, accompanied by the tropical cyclone "Bilis". A comparison of the simulated vertical wind fields and temperature structure with the ABL measurements at Xinken, Panyu, and Qingyuan stations found that the modeled and measured atmospheric fields revealed two different types of ABL characteristics over the PRD. When the surface winds over the PRD were light or nearly calm, the local circulation dominated, such as the sea-land breeze at Xinken station and the mountain-valley circulation at Qingyuan station. When the surface winds were strong, the stations were under the same background weather system, and the wind directions were almost the same. Furthermore, the modeled results also suggest that the subsidence by the typhoon "Bilis" had a great impact on the high Air Pollution Index (API).

Abstract:
Abstract. Atmospheric conditions are often connected with the occurrence of high pollution episodes especially in urban areas. As part of the PRIDE-PRD2006 intensive campaign, atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) measurements were carried out at Qingyuan, Panyu and Xinken in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) from 1 July to 30 July of 2006. It was found that in summer, the surface winds in PRD are more controlled by the south, and there usually is vertical wind shear at the height of 800 m or so, therefore, PRD is often influenced by the tropical cyclone/typhoon. The subsidence and precipitation from a tropical cyclone will affect the air quality of PRD. Under the subsidence, the wind speed in ABL and the height of ABL will decrease and result in high level concentrations. When the background wind speed is small or calm, the wind profile at Panyu and Xinken change dramatically with height, which is perhaps caused by the local circulations, such as the sea land breeze. For more understanding about the ABL of PRD, the simulations by the WRF mesoscale model were used to analyse the ABL characteristics in PRD. From three kinds of weather condition simulations (subsidence days, rainy days and sunny days) by WRF model, it was found that the simulated temperature, wind fields in these three cases were moderately consistent with the measurements. The results show that the diurnal variation of ABL in subsidence days and sunny days are obvious, but the diurnal variation of ABL on rainy days is not obvious. The ABL is obviously affected by the local circulation and the features of ABL are different in various stations. A simulation focus on high pollution episode during the subsidence days from 12–15 July 2006, occurred under high pressure conditions, accompanied by a tropical cyclone "Bilis". Comparing the simulated vertical wind fields and temperature structure with the ABL measurements at Xinken, Panyu and Qingyuan station, it was found that, the modelled and measured atmospheric fields reveal that there are two different kinds of ABL characteristics in PRD: when the surface winds in PRD were light or almost calm, the local circulation was dominated, such as the sea-land breeze at Xinken station and the mountain-valley circulation at Qingyuan station. When the surface winds were strong, the stations were under the same background weather system and the wind directions were almost the same. Furthermore, the modelled results also suggest that the high Air Pollutant index (API) episode was caused predominately by subsidence.

The purpose of this paper is to present a morphological and philological analysis of the zeeje manuscript, a handwritten document in Xinkan, an indigenous language family of Guatemala. This manuscript is a translation of an 1812 Spanish proclamation designed to bolster support for the Spanish Empire during the Napoleonic conflict and is one of five translations into indigenous languages of the Americas. However, among these known translations, the Xinkan document remains unanalyzed and poorly understood. This analysis suggests that the zeeje manuscript is a reflection of the complex geographic and social landscape of the Xinkan territory in the colonial era.

Abstract:
The Xinian in the second volume of the Tsinghua Bamboo Slips provides a different understanding of the so-called eastward relocation (dongqian) of the Zhou royal house than suggested in transmitted texts such as the Shiji and Zhushu jinian. Introducing the controversial issues concerning the relocation in the Xinian, this study focuses mostly on the problematic place name Shao E, where King Ping is said to have stayed for a while until Lord Wen of Jin brought him back to the capital region and enthroned him. In particular, while criticizing the later commentators’ identification of E with Xiangning, Shanxi, this study argues that Shao E in the Xinian should be more properly located in the Nanyang region. This relocation suggests that the year 770 BCE, inscribed for so long as the turning point between the Western Zhou and the Eastern Zhou periods, is problematic. It further proposes that the narrative on the eastward relocation in the Xinian does not necessarily contradict the transmitted texts, but rather tends to resolve some inconsistencies inherent in those texts.

Abstract Focusing on Liang Qichao’s campaign of national moral character reform, this article examines the discourse of xinmin (新民 new people) as a social engineering project that sought to remold the mindset and behaviors of the people a means of nation-building in the 1900s. Drawing on Koselleck’s idea of conceptual history, it analyses how the idea of qun (群) was deployed as a discursive building block of xinmin to cultivate a sense of membership in the political community of Chinese nation. It argues that the xinmin discourse facilitated a fundamental restructuring of the mental-cognitive framing of society in changing China from a Confucian cultural entity to a national political identity.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the psychological efficacy of Xinwei Decoction, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, to treat functional dyspepsia (FD) accompanied with depression and anxiety. Seventy-three subjects, divided into three groups, had been given herbal medicine (Xinwei Decoction), prokinetic agent (Domperidone) and placebo, respectively for 8 weeks. Before and after treatment, all subjects were examined with FD symptom scale, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA). As a result, the total scores of the three groups in FD symptom scale, HAMD and HAMA after treatment decreased in different levels, with the decrease in the herbal group more significant than the other two groups ( p <0.01), indicating the efficacy of the herbal medicine. The total effective rates of the herbal, Domperidone and placebo groups were 90%, 67% and 31%, respectively, which indicated significant effect differences between Xinwei Decoction and Domperidone ( p <0.05) and between Xinwei Decoction and placebo ( p <0.01), showing that the efficacy of herbal therapy was superior to that of the other two therapies. Furthermore, there was no one in the Domperidone and placebo groups being cured of depression and anxiety, while the curing rate in the herbal group was about 70%, indicating the efficacy of herbal medicine in comparison to that of Domperidone and placebo for anti-depression and anti-anxiety. The result demonstrated that Xinwei Decoction could not only alleviate FD symptoms but also relieve depression and anxiety.

Abstract:
The evaluation of resource and environmental carrying capacity (RECC) is the foundation for the rationale behind the arrangement of land spaces for production, living, and ecological uses. In this study, based on various natural, economic, and social factors, an integrated Multi-Factor assessment model was developed to evaluate the RECC of Xinbei district of Changzhou. Meanwhile, we also calculated the population carrying capacity estimation model restricted by food security. The study comprehensively analyzed the current status and land resource characteristics of a rapid urbanization area and the RECC restrictions for protection and development. The results indicate that the comprehensive carrying capacity of Xinbei showed distinct spatial heterogeneity, with a decreasing trend from the riverside protection area to urban areas, then to mountain areas. Combined with the secure food supply provided by future land resources, it was estimated that the population carrying index of Xinbei would be as high as 1.25 and 1.22 in 2035 and 2050, respectively, indicating that both years would experience a population overload. Therefore, an urgent adjustment to the structure and layout of territorial space and resources of the Xinbei District is necessary.

This article examines the practice of dual translation (heyi) in the late Qing, focusing in particular on Quanti xinlun, a physiological treatise compiled by Benjamin Hobson (1816-1873) and his Chinese assistants. It argues that, owing to the considerable latitude allowed to Hobson’s Chinese partners, the intellectual syncretism of the translation was a direct consequence of the Chinese agency at play in intercultural exchange. The collaborative process in the making of Quanti xinlun is also explored, and two passages in which the “Sinicization” of western physiology is most obvious are analyzed.

Abstract:
Seagrass is an important structural and functional component of the global marine ecosystem and is of high value for its ecological services. This paper took Xincun Bay (including Xincun Harbor and Li’an Harbor) of Hainan Province as the study area, combined ground truth data, and adopted two methods to map seagrass in 2020 using Chinese GF2 satellite images: maximum-likelihood and object-oriented classification. Sentinel-2 images from 2016 to 2020 were used to extract information on seagrass distribution changes. The following conclusions were obtained. (1) Based on GF2 imagery, both the classical maximum likelihood classification (MLC) method and the object-based image analysis (OBIA) method can effectively extract seagrass information, and OBIA can also portray the overall condition of seagrass patches. (2) The total seagrass area in the study area in 2020 was about 395 hectares, most of which was distributed in Xincun Harbor. The southern coast of Xincun Harbor is an important area where seagrass is concentrated over about 228 hectares in a strip-like continuous distribution along the coastline. (3) The distribution of seagrasses in the study area showed a significant decaying trend from 2016 to 2020. The total area of seagrass decreased by 79.224 ha during the five years from 2016 to 2020, with a decay rate of 16.458%. This study is the first on the comprehensive monitoring of seagrass in Xincun Bay using satellite remote sensing images, and comprises the first use of GF2 data in seagrass research, aiming to provide a reference for remote sensing monitoring of seagrass in the South China Sea.

Abstract:
The responses of adult ichneumonids to colors were studied through comparing the effectiveness of standardized interception traps in seven different colors, in Liupanshan, Daxinggou and Xinbin (China). The captured ichneumonids belonged to 13 subfamilies: Anomaloninae, Banchinae, Campopleginae, Cryptinae, Ctenopelmatinae, Diplazontinae, Ichneumoninae, Mesochorinae, Ophioninae, Orthocentrinae, Phrudinae, Pimplinae, and Tryphoninae. Field trapping results indicated that yellow and green traps collected more ichneumonids than did the traps of other colors. Black was the least efficient color for collecting ichneumonids in Liupanshan and Xinbin. The most frequently collected specimens were from the subfamilies Ctenopelmatinae, Campopleginae and Cryptinae, while the least frequently collected were from Phrudinae, Ophioninae and Diplazontinae in Liupanshan and Xinbin. In Daxinggou, black and yellow traps collected more ichneumonids than did other color traps, with white traps collecting the least. Most captured ichneumonids at this site were from Campopleginae and Cryptinae, whereas only a small number of specimens were collected from Banchinae, Phrudinae, Ophioninae and Diplazontinae were collected.

Abstract:
A lot of data indicates that rainfall has always played the very important role in landslide triggering. The paper discusses rainfall as a dynamic parameter in term of the load/unload response ratio theory, using the Xintan landslide as a case study. Analysis of the available data indicates that the occurrences of landslides in this region are controlled by rainfall, whose intensity and rainfall processes are the most important dynamic factors in determining the stability of slopes. Therefore, the relationship between rainfall and the movement of typical landslides has been specifically analyzed for the Xintan landslides by using the loading/unloading response ratio parameter of rainfall. The result of this study indicates that the mutation of the loading/unloading response ratio of rainfall of the Xintan landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir regions, China occurred just before their destabilization, which shows that the loading/unloading response ratio of rainfall and its changing feature can be taken as a precursor for the landslides induced by rainfall.

This paper compares and contrasts the harmonic patterns in each of these language families and concludes that similarities are likely due to contact between their speakers. This suggests that Xinkan, Jicaquean and Lencan speakers existed in a sort of micro-language area, a small-scale scenario of contact that shows unique indications of contact near or within the more dispersed scenarios of contact and borrowing acknowledged throughout Mesoamerica.
