High resolution analyses indicate that meiotic crossovers in human autosomes tend to cluster into 1-2 kb hotspots separated by blocks of high LD tens to hundreds of kilobases long. In contrast, low resolution data suggest only modest regional variation in recombination efficiency across the 2.6 Mb Xp/Yp pseudoautosomal region (PAR1), a male-specific recombination hot domain with a recombination rate about twenty times higher than the genome average. My research has focused on developing an understanding of processes operating in and around the Xp/Yp telomere, combined with detailed analysis of the unusual properties seen immediately adjacent to it. To this end, 7 kb of telomere adjacent-sequence was analysed, revealing a SNP density, pi, of 1.73 x 10-3 across the first 3 kb, 2-fold above average genome level. Furthermore, the sequence analysis revealed a 1.9 kb tandem duplication in 86% of chromosomes.
