The Arctic Ocean is one of the most climatically vulnerable areas on the planet, being a crossway of oceanic circulation. The study of high latitude continental margin sediments is useful for understanding past ice sheet dynamics history and its influence on climate changes. This PhD project focuses on the sedimentation history along the North-western Barents Sea continental margin from the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 to the Holocene. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), around 21.000 years ago, this area was covered by the Svalbard-Barents Sea Ice sheet (SBSIS). The sedimentary record cont

Abstract:
This thesis describes structural and functional analysis of members of the XPF/Mus81 family of junction-specific endonucleases. These enzymes recognise and nick double-stranded DNA within a variety of flaps, bubbles and branched DNA substrates. Genetic and biochemical evidence indicates that these endonucleases have important functions in nucleotide excision repair, DNA interstrand crosslink repair, recombination and replication fork repair, and thereby help maintain genomic integrity. Eukaryotic XPF orthologues are large multidomain proteins that are not suitable for structural studies at pre

In this dissertation, methods to synthesize ZnO are reported. First, zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized with small amounts of transition metal ions to create materials called dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS). We employed a low temperature sol-gel method that produces ZnO nanoparticles of reproducible size and incorporates cobalt, nickel, and manganese ions into the nanoparticles. Conditions were controlled such that a range of amounts of Co, Ni, and Mn were incorporated. The incorporation was tracked by color changes in the white ZnO powder to blue for Co, green for Ni and yellow fo

This thesis presents investigations on sediments from two African lakes which have been recording changes in their surrounding environmental and climate conditions since more than 200,000 years. Focus of this work is the time of the last Glacial and the Holocene (the last ~100,000 years before present [in the following 100 kyr BP]). One important precondition for this kind of research is a good understanding of the present ecosystems in and around the lakes and of the sediment formation under modern climate conditions. Both studies therefore include investigations on the modern environment (in

SiO2 accounts for 46–60 % of the composition of the ceramics, Al2O3 – for some 17–33%. The amounts of Fe, Na, Mg, K, Ca and Ti discovered in the samples are several times lesser

A random Caucasian population sample was screened for XLF polymorphic mutations with similar functional impact. This analysis identified two novel noncoding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).
