Abstract:
This paper outlines a methodology for designing information systems based on XML. The methodology uses XML DTDs to define the design standards, and the structure and constraints of the design specifications. The result of the design process is a set of valid XML documents that are the specifications of transaction programs and applications of the information system. At the start of a design process, the methodology uses a CASE tool to map user requirements into initial XML specifications. Final design specifications are produced by a sequence of XSL transformations of the initial XML specifications. A key feature of the methodology is that it produces a platform independent design of an information system. To enable an early feedback from users, the methodology uses further XSL transformations that produce an executable prototype of the information system in the Java programming environment.

Abstract:
The rapid growth of the World Wide Web provides major new opportunities for distributed databases, especially in macromolecular science. A new generation of technology, based on structured documents (SD), is being developed which will integrate documents and data in a seamless manner. This offers experimentalists the chance to publish and archive high-quality data from any discipline. Data and documents from different disciplines can be combined and searched using technology such as eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and its associated support for hypermedia (XLL), metadata (RDF) and stylesheets (XSL). Opportunities in crystallography and related disciplines are described.

AbstractThe X-Shooter Spectral Library (XSL) contains more than 800 spectra of stars across the color-magnitude diagram, that extend from near-UV to near-IR wavelengths (320-2450 nm). We summarize properties of the spectra of O-rich Long Period Variables in the XSL, such as phase-related features, and we confront the data with synthetic spectra based on static and dynamical stellar atmosphere models. We discuss successes and remaining discrepancies, keeping in mind the applications to population synthesis modeling that XSL is designed for.

Abstract:
XML has been widely used as metadata for image retrieval. As a standard, it makes it easier to index and retrieve information across different platforms. However, how to automatically convert an image into XML format remains a challenge. In this paper, a system for generating structured document in XML from digitally captured document images is presented. The system is aimed at providing an easy to use tool for average users without requiring depth of knowledge in the document processing areas. Further, a XML/XSL generator is developed to accurately represent a document in a XML structure, yet in a representation that reflects its original layout.

Abstract:
If the fourth generation fermions exist, the new quarks could influence the branching ratios of the decays of B→Xsγ and B→Xsl+l-. We obtain two solutions of the fourth generation CKM factor [Formula: see text] from the decay of B→ Xsγ. We use these two solutions to calculate the new contributions of the fourth generation quark to Wilson coefficients of the decay of B→ Xsl+l-. The branching ratio and the forward–backward asymmetry of the decay of B→ Xsl+l- in the two cases are calculated. Our results are quite different from that of SM in one case, almost the same in another case. If Nature chooses the former, the B meson decays could provide a possible test of the fourth generation existence.

Abstract:
In this paper we introduce a tool called the Web Service Translation tool (WST), which we are developing to implement a methodology for the design, validation and verification of Web Services with timed restrictions. This methodology works by making several translations, from phase to phase in the software development life cycle, where the system is represented at each phase by XML models. We use XSL Transformations (XSLT), which is a language for transforming XML documents. The purpose of these translations is to generate XML code automatically for a Web Service system and to obtain Web Services description models with Timed Automata for validating and verifying composite Web Services with time restrictions.

Abstract:
We present the third data release (DR3) of the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL). This moderate-to-high resolution, near-ultraviolet-to-near-infrared (350–2480 nm, R ∼ 10 000) spectral library is composed of 830 stellar spectra of 683 stars. DR3 improves upon the previous data release by providing the combined de-reddened spectra of the three X-shooter segments over the full 350–2480 nm wavelength range. It also includes additional 20 M-dwarf spectra from the ESO archive. We provide detailed comparisons between this library and Gaia EDR3, MILES, NGSL, CaT library, and (E-)IRTF. The normalised rms deviation is better than D = 0.05 or 5% for the majority of spectra in common between MILES (144 spectra of 180), NGSL (112/116), and (E-)IRTF (55/77) libraries. Comparing synthetic colours of those spectra reveals only negligible offsets and small rms scatter, such as the median offset(rms) 0.001 ± 0.040 mag in the (box1 − box2) colour of the UVB arm, −0.004 ± 0.028 mag in (box3 − box4) of the VIS arm, and −0.001 ± 0.045 mag in (box2 − box3) colour between the UVB and VIS arms, when comparing stars in common with MILES. We also find an excellent agreement between the Gaia published (BP − RP) colours and those measured from the XSL DR3 spectra, with a zero median offset and an rms scatter of 0.037 mag for 449 non-variable stars. The unmatched characteristics of this library, which combine a relatively high resolution, a large number of stars, and an extended wavelength coverage, will help us to bridge the gap between the optical and the near-IR studies of intermediate and old stellar populations, and to probe low-mass stellar systems.

Abstract:
We present the second data release (DR2) of the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL), which contains all the spectra obtained over the six semesters of that program. This release supersedes our first data release from Chen et al. (2014, A&A, 565, A117), with a larger number of spectra (813 observations of 666 stars) and with a more extended wavelength coverage as the data from the near-infrared arm of the X-shooter spectrograph are now included. The DR2 spectra then consist of three segments that were observed simultaneously and, if combined, cover the range between ∼300 nm and ∼2.45 μm at a spectral resolving power close to R = 10 000. The spectra were corrected for instrument transmission and telluric absorption, and they were also corrected for wavelength-dependent flux-losses in 85% of the cases. On average, synthesized broad-band colors agree with those of the MILES library and of the combined IRTF and Extended IRTF libraries to within ∼1%. The scatter in these comparisons indicates typical errors on individual colors in the XSL of 2−4%. The comparison with 2MASS point source photometry shows systematics of up to 5% in some colors, which we attribute mostly to zero-point or transmission curve errors and a scatter that is consistent with the above uncertainty estimates. The final spectra were corrected for radial velocity and are provided in the rest-frame (with wavelengths in air). The spectra cover a large range of spectral types and chemical compositions (with an emphasis on the red giant branch), which makes this library an asset when creating stellar population synthesis models or for the validation of near-ultraviolet to near-infrared theoretical stellar spectra across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.

Abstract:
PurposeThe present paper aims to describe an approach for building the Semantic Web rules for interoperation between heterogeneous learning objects, namely course outlines from different universities, and one of the rule uses: identifying (in)compatibilities between course descriptions.Design/methodology/approachAs proof of concept, a rule set is implemented using the rule markup language (RuleML), a member of XML‐based languages. This representation in RuleML allows the rule base to be platform‐independent, flexibly extensible and executable.FindingsThe RuleML source representation is easily converted to other XML‐based languages (such as RDF, OWL and XMI) as well as incorporated into, and extracted from, existing XML‐based repositories (such as IEEE LOM and CanLOM) using XSL Transformations (XSLT).Practical implicationsThe RuleML facts and rules represented in the positional slotted language are used by the OO jDREW reasoning engine to detect and map between semantically equivalent components of course outlines as the key step in their interoperation. In particular, this will enable the precise delivery of learning objects (e.g. course outlines) from repositories to a specific learner's context.Originality/valueAlthough the particular scenario is discussed in the present paper, the proposed approach can be applied to other tasks related to enabling semantic interoperability.

Abstract:
SummaryThe HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is an important XML-based standard for the representation of clinical documents. Objectives: The use of Markup Languages could satisfy the demands of involved healthcare staff as well as the needs of patients, to receive an overview of the patient’s treatment during the hospital stay. The standardization efforts of different groups dealing with this problem have demonstrated progress, but have not, as yet, achieved a routinely usable result. In particular, differentiating information according to a hierarchical order has not been published to date. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 60 discharge letters from a cardiology ward (ward A) as well as 60 discharge letters from a gastroenterology ward (ward B) were extracted from the central hospital information system, by taking every fifth discharge letter issued over a one year period. Results: An XML-based prototype for medical discharge letters has been put in place representing the required information units and information elements. By means of an XSL-stylesheet, a detailed representation of the conventional discharge letter has been produced that is platform independent and permits the recurrent use of information units. Conclusions: Through the introduction of definitions like information elements and information units, progress in the development of CDA level two and three might be realized. We present a method by which discharge letters can be used by an Internal Medicine Department. This concept is implemented in a XML-based prototype allowing a special view on XML data to generate this document type.

Abstract:
Web data mining is a field that has gained popularity in the recent time with the advancement in web mining technologies. Web data mining is the extraction of data on web. The term Web Data Mining is a technique used to crawl through various web resources to collect required information, which enables an individual or a company to promote business, understanding marketing dynamics, new promotions floating on the Internet, etc. The data on web is unstructured, irregular and lacks a fixed unified pattern as it is presented in HTML format that represents data in the presentation format and is unable to handle semi-structured or unstructured data . These difficulties lead to the emergence of XML based web data mining. XML was created so that richly structured documents could be used over the web.XML provides a standard for the data exchange and data storage .This paper presents a web data mining model based on XML. In this model first of all unstructured data is transformed to XML and then XML document is stored in database in the form of the string tree, then specific records are searched using a LINQ query. If record does not exist in the database then check the updates of specific website and repeat the same steps. At last data selected by LINQ Query is displayed on web browser. The feature that helped to increase the speed of data extraction and that also reduces the time of extraction is the presence of database that stores the data that have been extracted earlier by a user and can be used by other users by passing a LINQ query .In this model there is no need to create an extra separate XSL file because this model stores xml document in the database in the form of the string tree. This model is implemented using C# with XML.

Abstract:
Context. The X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) is an empirical stellar library at medium spectral resolution covering the wavelength range from 3000 Å to 24 800 Å. This library aims to provide a benchmark for stellar population studies. Aims. In this work, we present a uniform set of stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and iron abundances for 754 spectra of 616 XSL stars. Methods. We used the full-spectrum fitting package ULySS with the empirical MILES library as reference to fit the ultraviolet-blue (UVB) and visible (VIS) spectra. We tested the internal consistency and we compared our results with compilations from the literature. Results. The stars cover a range of effective temperature 2900 < Teff < 38 000 K, surface gravity 0 < logg < 5.7, and iron abundance −2.5 < [Fe/H] < +1.0, with a couple of stars extending down to [Fe/H] = −3.9. The precisions of the measurements for the G- and K-type stars are 0.9%, 0.14, and 0.06 in Teff, logg, and [Fe/H], respectively. For the cool giants with logg < 1, the precisions are 2.1%, 0.21, and 0.22, and for the other cool stars these values are 1%, 0.14, and 0.10. For the hotter stars (Teff > 6500 K), these values are 2.6%, 0.20, and 0.10 for the three parameters.
