According to pre-Ching Dynasty Confucianism, several books reflect upon “Li Xue” including “Yi Li” (“Etiquette and Ceremonials”), “Zhou Li” (“Rites of Zhou”) and “Li Ji” (“Classic of Rites”). In these three books, the “Yi Li” and the “Zhou Li” placed heavy emphasis on listings of laws and decrees, and rules of etiquette. Only the “Li Ji” began on a theory level to explain Confucian “Li”, making the “Li Ji” one of the most important books both on the topic of Confucian “Li” and as an asset to traditional Chinese Culture. However, during the Qing Dynasty, the trend was to research ancient texts, therefore, the “Li Ji” was not as a popular research subject as the “Yi Li” and “Zhou Li”. Therefore, as one of the few good commentaries of the “Li Ji”, the “Li Ji Ji Jie” is a rare volume expounding “Li Ji” in the Qing Dynasty, and it has been widely published and well read since then. This thesis used analysis, induction and comparison to expound on Sun Xi-Dan’s “Li ji ji jie”, with emphasis on the contradictions against Zheng Xuan’s notes. The first paragraph described reasons of this research, methods of researching and a brief explanation of “Li Ji Ji Jie”. The second paragraph discussed Sun Xi-Dan’s biography and the reasoning behind his composition of “Li Ji Ji Jie”. Then, the third paragraph analyzed the contradictions to Zheng Xuan’s notes in the “Li Ji Ji Jie”. The analysis is separated into three categories, Direct Contradictions, Indirect Contradictions and Contradictions to be researched later. The fourth paragraph illustrated the proof Sun Xi-Dan used to contradict Zheng Xuan’s clauses in Xun Gu and Li Chi. The last paragraph summarized this research’s conclusions.
