Mature leaves of eight species of Xyris were prepared by standard methods for electron transmission microscopy. Wartlike intercellular pectic protuberances were observed on the surface of inner periclinal walls of epidermal cells in Xyris obcordata, Xyris hymenachne, and Xyris pterygoblephara. In the latter, the protuberances also occur on the surface of parenchymatic mesophyll cells; they frequently project into intercellular spaces and may connect opposing cells. A systematic study of the Australian species of Xyris section Xyris is presented. Seven species are recognised, of which Xyris cheumatophila A.N. Doust & B.J. Conn is described for the first time. All recognised taxa are provided with descriptions (including illustrations), distribution information (including maps), habitat descriptions, nomenclatural and other relevant notes. Lectotypes are here designated for all previously described Australian species of section Xyris which are accepted by us. An iconotype of the name of X. indica (the type of the genus) is here chosen.

Abstract:
A new species of Xyris from the Southern and Southeastern regions of Brazil is described herewith. Xyris cervii belongs to Xyris section Nematopus, which is characterized by having basal to central placentation. Xyris cervii is morphologically similar to X. tortula, but differs by its deliquescent sheath with long hairs at the margin sheath, in addition to lanceolate and sub-equilateral, lateral sepals. A description, illustrations, geographic distribution and taxonomic comments are also provided.

Three new species of Xyris from Brazil are described and illustrated. Xyris nevata is characterized by bracts with conspicuous veins and a reddish androecium and gynoecium; X. pulchella also exhibits a reddish androecium and gynoecium, and is further characterized by its small size and terete to subterete leaf blades; X. rostrata has a turbinate spike and bracts with a rostrate-acuminate apex. Commentary is provided for each species on habitat, distribution, phenology and conservation status, and the new species are compared with morphologically similar species.

As espécies do gênero Xyris são típicas de solos brejosos ou úmidos, sendo bastante freqüentes nos campos rupestres de Minas Gerais. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o comportamento germinativo de sementes de X. cipoensis Smith & Downs, X. longiscapa A. Nilsson, X. platystachia A. Nilsson e X. trachyphylla Mart. sob diferentes condições de luz e temperatura.
