Abstract:
The management philosophy until recent years has been to replace the workers with computers, which are available 24 hours a day, need no benefits, no insurance and never complain. But as the year 2000 approached, along with it came the fear of the millennium bug, generally known as Y2K, and the computers threatened to strike!!!! Y2K, though an abbreviation of year 2000, generally refers to the computer glitches which are associated with the year 2000. Computer companies, in order to save memory and money, adopted a voluntary standard in the beginning of the computer era that all computers automatically convert any year designated by two numbers such as 99 into 1999 by adding the digits 19. This saved enormous amount of memory, and thus money, because large databases containing birth dates or other dates only needed to contain the last two digits such as 65 or 86. But it also created a built in flaw that could make the computers inoperable from January 2000. The problem is that most of these old computers are programmed to convert 00 (for the year 2000) into 1900 and not 2000. The trouble could therefore, arise when the systems had to deal with dates outside the 1900s. In 2000, for example a programme that calculates the age of a person born in 1965 will subtract 65 from 00 and get -65.

Abstract:
Most data processing systems in the world use two digits to represent the year number in a date field. This representation will lead to errneous results as the current century draws to a close. The consequences of this year 2000 (Y2K) crisis are very alarming. Even more alarming is the fact that a significant number of managers are still not aware of the seriousness of the Y2K problem. If not tackled on a war footing, this bug might cause some organizations to go out of business. This paper by Venkata Rao discusses those aspects of the Y2K problem which are of interest to managers as they have a key role to play in the initiation of a Y2K conversion project in their organization and in defining its scope. According to him, many lessons are to be learnt from this crisis by the IT community, and, in future, new design strategies should be used to prevent this crisis from recurring.

Abstract:
In this study, using the recent Y2-compliance expenditures as an example, we examine whether disclosures relating to investments in information technology (IT) were relevant to investors in assessing the market value of equity. We use a sample of 190 firms that disclosed estimates of total Y2K-compliance costs in their 1997 annual reports to examine the association between Y2K-compliance costs and share prices. We test the joint hypothesis that Y2K-compliance costs were relevant to equity valuation of firms that chose to become Y2K-compliant and that these costs were sufficiently reliable to be reflected in share prices. We find that estimates of Y2K-compliance costs were positively and significantly related to share prices after controlling for earnings, book value of equity, and other factors. We find that the stock market is not shortsighted, and consider investments in Y2K-remediation efforts a significant and value-increasing activity for the average firm.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study provides information on the effectiveness of design metrics when used on object oriented systems and explores means of increasing metric use-fulness in regard to the problem areas identified. Evidence shows that current metrics are weak in assessing some qualities when faced with concepts central to object orientation. It describes practices in design and implementation that cause complications in calculating metrics and what effects those practices may have on various types of metrics by examining specific examples as well as discussing the theory involved. It examines assumptions which can be made in the formulation of metrics to avoid the issues caused by these practices and what effect these assumptions will have on metric results.

Abstract:
Recommender systems rely heavily on user data to make accurate rec- ommendations. This presents a problem for new users for whom no such data is available. This study investigated if this problem could be reduced by basing recommendations solely on user’s demographic in- formation. Experiments were conducted using a framework that em- ploys K-means clustering. To evaluate the framework, the MovieLens 100K dataset was applied to a set of experiments. While the results did not exhibit any correlation between ratings and demographic features in the MovieLens 100K dataset, it does not exclude that the framework is not effective on other datasets with more demographic features.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Leaks in fuel storage tanks and distribution piping systems have been identified as a mission-critical problem by the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army. Fuel system leaks are often hard to locate and virtually inaccessible for efficient repair because the piping is often installed under a concrete pad or tarmac. Leak repair could cost up to $2,000, and the cost of cleanup and re-mediation for fuel spills can exceed $50,000. In this project an acoustic remote sensing system was installed to monitor an Army heliport refueling system to determine whether it could detect and accurately locate fuel leaks using computer software technolo-gies to distinguish acoustic leakage signatures from normal fuel system operational noise. Demonstration and validation efforts were disadvantaged by the fact that no fuel leaks occurred in the monitored system for the duration of the project. However, the monitoring system did identify several unusual acoustic events within the fueling system and interpret them as indications of intermittent malfunctions of a check valve and a fuel pump. The 30-year ROI is about 6.42. Further work is required before the technology can be fully implemented: its ability to detect fluid leaks must be proven, and the system specifications must be certified through an EPA third party.
