We demonstrate the performances of pulsed and CW pumped Nd:YAG lasers, passively Q-switched with Cr 4+: YAG saturable absorbers. Losses contributed by the active Cr4+ ions relate to their excited state absorption. Repetitive Q-switching of the CW pumped Nd:YAG laser was achieved for the first time, providing pulses 80–300 ns wide (FWHM) with repetition rates between 2 and 29 kHz. This laser is applicable where exact pulse timing is not required.

Subject and purpose. Currently, gas, solid-state, and fiber lasers are used to process materials in the aviation industry. For the thermal treatment of steels, gas CO2 lasers with a capacity of more than 1 kW used, which are reliable in operation but have high cost and low efficiency. There are no results on the use of low-power (up to 20 W) pulsed-mode lasers for surface hardening of steel products. The purpose of this work is to determine the modes of surface hardening of products from carbon and alloy steels using low-power solid-state pulsed YAG lasers. Methodology. For laser hardening, a

High-average-power narrow-linewidth tunable solid-state lasers in the wavelength region between 2 and 3 μm are attractive light sources for many applications. An advanced procedure of ZnSe element doping and surface improvement was applied to increase the laser-induced damage threshold, which resulted in an increase in the output power of the Cr2+:ZnSe laser system. This necessitated the calculation of exact temperature rise of the targeted tissue before laser irradiation. The pre-calculated laser parameters required, for successful treatment, wit

While various types of lasers are used for the polishing of PCD tools, pulsed excimer and Nd: YAG lasers are among the most commonly used ones. The current development in laser polishing of PCD tools is reviewed. The reported experimental and modelling studies to improve the process performance are discussed. Structured pulses with morphologies as radial-order Laguerre-Gaussian beams and peak power higher than 1.1 kW are generated by a tight-focusing pumped Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG laser. By leveraging the gain competition between the principal polarization bases resulted from the thermal stress inside the isotropic gain crystal, the high-order structured pulses are found to reveal inhomogeneous polarized states with polarization singularities. Moreover, obvious polarization switching in the temporal domain is intriguingly observed under the significant coupling between the orthogonal polarization bases.

Abstract:
The thin films of YAG (Y3Al5O12) and YAP (YAlO3) doped with Nd were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on sapphire (0001) and (1102) substrates and YAP (001) substrate from crystalline YAG target of 0.8 at% of Nd, and crystalline YAP targets of 0.74 at% of Nd, 0.80 at% of Nd and 0.90 at% of Nd concetrations. The substrate temperature Ts varied from 860°C to 1100°C and oxygen pressure po in the range from 8.5 × 10–3 Pa to 5.5 Pa. Energy density of KrF excimer laser beam was 3 - 4 J/cm2. Film thickness on sapphire substrates was between 6 µm and 11 µm and on YAP round 20 µm.

Abstract:
It has been demonstrated that pulsed operation of the Nd:YAG laser is possible with good efficiency at 1.44 µm wavelength.1 This wavelength is particularly interesting for atmospheric propagation and medical applications because it is eye-safe and coincides with absorption peak of water in this spectral region. It has been shown that the same effects on tissue can be obtained with 1.44 (µm Nd: YAG laser as with 2.12 µm Ho:YAG laser.2 For technical reasons, the power output and pulse repetition rates from many holmium lasers are limited. Thus, an alternative laser that provides similar tissue e

Abstract:
Recently, Badziak and Tyl [1] have theoretically analyzed the inclusion of a two-photon absorber along with a single photon absorber in a laser cavity. They predicted that mode locking would occur with an increase in the intensity and contrast of the pulses, and a reduction in the pulse length. In this paper we announce the experimental observation of passive mode locking in a pulsed Nd3+:YAG laser with the inclusion of only a two-photon absorbing element in the cavity.
