Abstract:
Language change manifests itself in various ways. The majority of studies on language change in Yami, an endangered Austronesian language spoken on Orchid Island, Taiwan, have centered on the rapid language shift from Yami to Mandarin within the speech community (Chen 1998, Li and Ho 1988, Lin 2007, Rau 1995). The present study, however, aims to explore whether the sound change of [ɮ] to [l] in Yami (e.g., soli [ʂuɮi] > [ʂuli] 'taro') is triggered by language contact between Mandarin and Yami. Three variables were considered: Mandarin competence, Mandarinspeaking frequency, and social network integration. The results showed that the three variables were strongly correlated with sound change. Participants possessing advanced Mandarin competence, higher Mandarin-speaking frequency, and/or weaker social network integration into the Yami community (i.e., greater exposure to Mandarin) tended to exhibit the highest rate of sound change, which might be attributed to a cross-linguistic influence from Mandarin to Yami through extensive language contact.

Abstract:
This article extends previous analyses on (ay) and (aw) raising in Yami, an endangered Austronesian language spoken on Orchid Island, Taiwan. Two patterns of (ay) and (aw) variation co-exist in Yami—the more conservative/unraised variants and the innovative/raised forms—each of which indexes an authentic regional identity. Results from recent data suggest that Yami has undergone significant changes in just one generation as the raised variants are now preferred by younger islanders and have started permeating through non-raising areas. Traumatic shifts in the ecological context on Orchid Island help explain this sound change. Economically, rapid shift from fishing/farming to tourism trades promotes daily face-to-face communications among younger islanders, which has catalyzed the spread of nucleus raising to non-raising areas. Sociopsychologically, ongoing intergroup conflicts between islanders and mainland Taiwanese may further trigger the sound change, altering nucleus raising into a new communal system which highlights Yami identity in opposition to Others.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the mythology of Yamī and her twin-brother Yama (the first humans according to Indo-Iranian mythology), their non-human origin and some aspects of Yamī’s behaviour which presumably betray a number of features of a female half-deity. The relationships between Yamī and Yama are the central topic of the dialogue hymn Rgveda 10.10, where Yamī attempts to seduce her twin to incest in order to produce offspring and thus continue the human race. This offer is refused by Yama, who refers to the inappropriateness of incest. Although Yamī and Yama are humans according to the Vedic tradition, their origin from two half-deities – a Gandharva father and an Apsara mother – remains inexplicable: how could a couple of non-human beings (half-deities or demons) give birth to humans? Obviously, the mythological status of the twins should be reconsidered. I argue that at least one of them, Yamī, retains immortality and some other features of the non-human (semi-divine) nature. On the basis of the analysis of the Yama and Yamī hymn and some related Vedic texts, I argue that this assumption may account for certain peculiarities of Yamī’s behaviour – particularly her hypersexuality (which can be qualified as demonic type of behaviour), as opposed to the much more constrained, human type of conduct displayed by Yama. Given the notoriously lustful character of the Gandharvas, an origin from this semi-divine creature may account for Yamī’s hypersexuality. Although the word gandharvá- does not have Indo-European etymology, we can find possible Indo-European parallels. In particular, the Gandharvas are comparable with the Centaurs, which cannot be etymologically related but possibly originate in the same non-Indo-European source. There are some reasons to assume that both words are borrowed from the Kassite language and mythology, which, in turn, may have been related to the language and culture of the Proto-North-Caucasians. Although we do not find exact equivalents of Yamī outside of the Indo-Iranian pantheon, indirect parallels can be found in other Indo-European traditions. The Apsaras (water nymphs) can be compared to a variety of water deities (nymphs) in Greek mythology, such as the Naiads, or to the Slavic rusalki.

Abstract A phenomenon often termed “optional ergative marking” is found in a number of genetically unrelated languages. Yali, a Trans-New Guinea language spoken in West Papua, shows striking similarities to optional ergative systems as described in the literature. This paper focuses on the relation between agentivity and discourse prominence, and argues in favour of a systematic distinction between semantic and syntactic contexts as conditioning factors for optional ergative marking. It further provides new evidence for the close interplay of ergative marking and what has been termed “discourse prominence” in descriptions of some other languages and shows that in Yali, optional ergative marking operates on both the global and the local level of discourse.

The relevance of the research: defining the role of the modern Kyrgyz language as one of the ancient Turkic languages and defining the development process of the Kyrgyz language. Purpose of the research: to analyze the types of official words in the written monument of the XI century in the dictionary Diwan Lughat at-Turk by Mahmud Kashgari by types, to compare the facts with the modern Kyrgyz language and determine the level of their use. The object of the research is M. Kashkari’s dictionaries translated into the Kyrgyz language. The research was carried out using the historical-comparative method. The vocabulary of the dictionary has been studied in comparison with the materials of the modern Kyrgyz language. In some cases, facts from related languages were also used. As a result, the words in the M. Kashgari dictionary are divided into the following types: particles, after words, conjunctions, modal words. In addition, the level of use of official words in the dictionary of the modern Kyrgyz language was determined: words that occur in the dictionary and are used in the modern Kyrgyz language without semantic and phonetic changes: köp kök – kөpkөk, sap sarɪğ — yellow, qup–kup, çulq–chylk, ҫaq – dal, chak, üçün — for, etc.; service words used in the case of phonetic change: ҫɪm-chylk, la — yes, taky — one more, shu — chu, ärdi — so, birlän — with someone (something), yana — and so on; unused service words by their appearance in the dictionary: uș — exactly like, yama — yes, — yes, isrä — then, son, ärinç — maybe etc. Dictionary Diwan Lughat at-Turk by Mahmud Kashgari contains information about the history of the Kyrgyz language, historical lexicology, comparative study of the official words of the Turkic languages.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the concepts of labour, life, and language among the Yami of Lanyu, Taiwan. In the local context, it is labour, life and language that comprise the concept of personhood among the Yami: tao, i.e. the ‘person' in Yami language, is someone created labouring, and his labour in turn creates affluence, authority, and truth. I name this culturally particular image of a real or true person as Homo laboris or ‘Man the Worker'. This thesis aims to explore how labour, wealth, power, and knowledge are interrelated in Yami culture, and behind these relations, what material, social and epistemological conditions exist and render the relatedness possible. By analysing the contemporary economic predicament among the Yami, I attempt to highlight the effect of an episteme: when the Yami recognise and pursue wealth in the context of market economy they seem to be blind to the enormous invisible wealth in the market, because their category of wealth is constructed through numerous vis-à-vis relationships whose meaning resides in what a particular person is able to ‘see'. The concept of wealth is being re-categorised among the Yami, due to both their continuous trial and error in business management and the invincible power of abstract money. Accordingly, the straightforward relations between wealth, power, knowledge and labour are dissolving. The image of a real person is also changing now. In short, what money and commodities introduce to the Yami is not merely their use- or exchange- value but a set of new relations and a new way to see and recognise the world.

Adopting an eclectic analytic perspective of discourse analysis, conversation analysis and functional approaches, this study conducts an in-depth pragmatic analysis and describes the function of three pragmatic particles yani, iSte and Sey in casual, conversational Turkish. All three particles have multiple functions, which are described by reference to occurrences in utterances within three different domains of conversation. While utterance initial occurrences of yani are mainly connective and continuative, the utterance final placement of yani mainly acts as a situating particle with a strongly interactional nature. The utterance medial occurrences are basically &lsquo
self-editing&rsquo
whereby the speaker marks the clarification of a point in his/her prior talk. iSte mainly acts as a frame particle demarcating utterances as containing detailed, highlighted, and reported information as well as connecting distant pieces of utterances. The third particle Sey basically marks the speaker&rsquo
s temporary mental effort of extracting the linguistic information from the memory. In addition to its major role in repair organisation whereby marking its producer&rsquo
s verbal planning and word search, Sey displays caution and discretion and marks politeness when assessing/asserting something about the self or the other.

There are 24 endangered languages in Taiwan, based on the most recent repot from the UNESCO. Yami is one of them. If a language dies, its culture is also likely to be gone. In response to language endangerment, the National Digital Archives Program and Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan in Taiwan are advocating research in language documentation and conservation. The purpose of this study is to build Yami resources and support learner to translate them into English or Chinese online. The system, based on the concepts of ontology, can promote sharing, application and storing. The Yami ontology framework is based on WordNet, IEEE SUMO and word formation processes in Yami, such as affixation and reduplication to develop Yami conceptualization.Iits inference used Racer, SWRL and Jess tool that developed Yami’s Semantic Web. The Yami ontology was mapped to WordNet, IEEE SUMO and Sinica BOW that complete and exchange data.

This is a survey to investigate the sociolinguistic situation of the Yamiin Lanyu. The study mainly is concerned with second language proficiency,language use, and language attitude. Second language, for adults, isreferred to as Mandarin Chinese, but for the younger generation, it iseither Mandarin Chinese or the Yami language. Second language proficiencyis evaluatedb by Sentence Repetition Test(SRT) and Second Language OralProficiency Evaluation(SLOPE). Language use and language attitude areinvestigated through questionnaires and observati on techniques. The studyof language use includes the language choice patterns in different domains,such as with different interlocutors and settings. Language attitude isconcerned with attitudes toward the Yami language and Mandarin Chinese, theloss of the Yami language, language identity and ethnic identity. Theresults indicate that the middle generation had better Mandarin Chineseproficiency than the elder generation. The Yami language ability in theyounger generation declines seriously. Respondents in Izazaley Village havebetter Yami lan guage proficiency than those living in Yayu and ImuzudVillages. Concerning language use and langauge attitude, youngerrespondents prefer Mandarin Chinese and have a more positive attitudetoward it. On the other hand, the older respond ents use the Yami langaugemost frequently, and they identify strongly with their native language.Respondents from the village where people have better native languageability have higher frequencies of using the Yami language and ident ifystrongly with it. It is suggested that more Yami language radio program,more frequencies of using the Yami language at home, and the nativelanguage education at school would help preserve the Yami langauge.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the concept of style transfer for visual storytelling is introduced. Style transfer for visual storytelling is the process of identifying a definitive style of a source, such as an artist or culture, and applying the features of that style to a target, such as a character which has a different style. As a proof of concept, the style of the American film director Tim Burton is transferred to a character from Hindu mythology, Yamah. The style transfer is done based on the concept of 'Pattern Language' introduced by Christopher Alexander et al., in his book, 'A Pattern Language'. A set of patterns is developed based on the source and target. The target is then designed based on the patterns. The design is then visualized in a suitable medium.

Conservation of resources such as bandwidth, energy and memory are of a concern in Resource Constrained Networks (RCNs). Wireless mobile devices, especially low cost devices are stifled by the limited resources such as battery power, screen size, input, memory and processors. The low cost wireless mobile devices penetrating the developing world market demand for a cost effective messaging format that fits within the constrained wireless environment. Reduction of verbosity is considered to be one of the most effective steps in controlling the resource consumption in RCNs. This chapter presents a method for optimizing resource consumption by the use of a new messaging format with less verbosity. The proposed format is based on YAML Ain´t Markup Language (YAML), which is further enhanced with message level security specifications.

Calls for replication studies are becoming more frequent, and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has now reached sufficient maturity to offer numerous studies that lend themselves to replication. Realistic and successful replications rely on transparency in terms of data, results, and methodology. Two published studies in the area of vocabulary CALL will be discussed from the perspective of their suitability for replication: Franciosi, Yagi, Tomoshige, and Ye (2016) and Kim and Kim (2012). Alzahrani (2017) is a replication of Franciosi et al. (2016), confirming the findings with a markedly different learner group. The replication used the same methodology, a slightly modified list of target words, and Saudi participants. Kim and Kim (2012) compared vocabulary learning across three different screen sizes. The flashcard software is not specified any further, nor are the target words. While such an underspecified methodology is less likely to lead to a successful replication that can strengthen the validity and reliability of research results in our field, it can still provide a good training opportunity for students to learn about methodology in CALL.

Abstract:
1944 yılında Sökel bir ailenin oğlu olarak Kayseri’de doğan İsmet Özel, ilk şiirini 1963 yılında yayımlayarak edebiyatımıza şair olarak önemli bir iz bırakmıştır. Uzun süreler siyasi, düşünsel topluluklarda aktif görevler alıp en ön saflarda bulunmuş, düşünce yazıları ve söyleşileriyle içinde olduğu kitleyi mobilize ve motive etme becerisi göstermiş ise de şiirlerini içinde olduğu ve savunduğu görüşlerin aracı yapmamayı, şiirini “has şiir” kategorisi içinde tutmayı başarmıştır. Edebiyatımızda “İkinci Yeni” olarak adlandırılan dönemin hemen ardından, ikinci yeninin şiirinden de beslenerek bağımsız şair kimliğini oluşturmayı başarmıştır. Bunu becerebilmesinin en önemli sebebi daha özgün imge oluşturabilmesi ve dilin imkanlarını özgün bir biçimde kullanabilmesindendir. Dili son derece rahat görünse de okuyucunun şiirinin dünyasına dahil olabilmesi ve şiirinden keyif alabilmesi için okuyucusunun da emek sarf etmesini istemektedir. Bu konuda okuyucusuna yardımcı olmak arzusundan olsa gerek, “Şiir Okuma Kılavuzu” dahi hazırlamış, bu çalışmasıyla öte yandan “poetikasını” ortaya koymuştur. İsmet Özel’in kelimelere yaklaşımı kendinden önceki şair nesli gibi değildir. O kelimeleri alışılmış ve eskimiş şekillerinin dışında kullanmaktan, yani hep aynı şekilde kullanmamaktan yanadır. İsmet Özel’in kelime anlayışı, imgeci şiirin kelime anlayışıdır, tıpkı modern resmin nesne anlayışı gibidir. Kelimelere imgeci şiirin çok anlamlı genişliği içinde fonksiyon verir. Biçimsel özellikleri şiirlerinde kullandığı kelimelerin seçiminde gösterdiği titizlikle besler. Bağlandığı siyasal düşünceleri şiirlerinde esas almayan, yani şiirini özellikle politik söylem aracı olarak kullanmayan İsmet Özel, ilk yıllarda sol, sonraki yıllarda da İslami terim ve kavramları kullanmıştır. Üçüncü dönem diyebileceğimiz son dönemde de milletçilik kavramları şiire dâhil olur
