Abstract:
This article reconstructs, by means of archival sources (ethno-historical and anthropological), a history of the privileged and strategic political and economic position of Yanque in the Colca Valley: as a central seat of power of the Collagua estate which controlled the north, east and southeast parts of the Valley from the X to XV centuries; as a center of administration of Inca Tahuantinsuyu, in the Valley from the XV to XVI centuries; as the center of the municipality and region during the Spanish viceroyalty, from the XVI to XVIII centuries; as the capital of the province of Caylloma since the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, in the “Aristocratic Republic”; and as a tourist area where the largest number of hotels across the Valley is concentrated, since the late twentieth century to the present.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis talks about the economic and political uses that the power families and the local authorities of the community of Yanque in the Colca Valley (province of Caylloma, department of Arequipa) make of the Internet and the cell phone (new information and communication technologies or new ICTs) in the current Peruvian Andes. The main argument is that they use the Internet and the cell phone to coordinate agricultural production and commercialization from home, the farm and the plaza (economic uses of new ICTs in agriculture), to coordinate with their tourist service networks and reduce tourist intermediaries (economic uses of new ICT in tourism), and to register social prestige and build political-legal representation (political uses of the new ICT in work, rituals and festivities, and in other community work). The Internet and the cell phone, far from disintegrating the stratified society and the traditional local culture of Yanque, function as vehicles to reaffirm and reinforce its validity, to reproduce it, because those who use the new ICTs to adapt themselves to new economic scenarios and to stay in scenarios Politicians are those who already have accumulated different forms of power (money, lands, objects and religious knowledge, educational titles). It is in an indirect way that the use of the Internet and the cell phone by the privileged groups of Yanque has made it possible to highlight the differentiation, distinction and social inequities in a town with a minority that has concentrated, for a very long time, all kinds of wealth and its benefits. This thesis is divided into seven chapters. In the first chapter, the study is presented: the research problem and the methodological design. In the second chapter, the theoretical foundations and a bibliographic balance on the new ICTs in the Peruvian Andes are presented. In the third chapter, the current social context of Yanque has been reconstructed from the recent transformations that the community has experienced from the origin of a new rurality, a process where agricultural activity, and what comes with it, begins to diminish to the detriment of tourist activity. In the fourth chapter, the conditions of access and the technical training that the community of Yanque and its people have in the context of the rural dynamics of the Internet and the cellphone are contextualized. In the fifth and the sixth chapter, the economic and political uses of the new ICTs in Yanque are analyzed, respectively. Finally, in the seventh chapter, the findings are discussed and the conclusions are presented within a broader panorama of Andean Studies and Digital Anthropology.

Jackman, Henrik. "Surface temperature measurement on a Yankee cylinder during operation." Thesis, Karlstad University, Division for Engineering Sciences, Physics and Mathematics, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-4463.

Full text
Abstract:

The Yankee cylinder is used in most of Metso Paper's machines. It is used in the drying and creping process. Since the outcome of these processes largely affect the paper's final quality it is important that the Yankee cylinder behaves in a controlled fashion. One important parameter affecting the behaviour of the Yankee cylinder is its surface temperature.

The objective of this thesis was to search for and evaluate methods for measuring the surface temperature of a Yankee cylinder during operation. Metso Paper is looking for a method having an accuracy of ΔT = 1°C, a response time of t<10 ms, and being portable.

Three different instruments were tested during the thesis:

  • Thermophone, a contact measurement device currently used by Metso Paper.
  • RAYNGER MX4, a pyrometer from Raytek.
  • FLIR P640, a thermographic camera with a 640x480 focal plane array from FLIR.

The instruments were tested by performing measurements on Metso Paper's pilot machine in Karlstad during operation. The measurements revealed drawbacks for all three instruments. The biggest drawbacks of the Thermophone was its response time, t~5 min, and its dependence on the frictional heating of the teflon cup. The frictional heating causes the measured temperature to increase even after 15 min making it hard to know when to stop the measurement. How much the frictional heating affects the measured temperature was difficult to analyse, making it a suggestion for future studies.

The biggest drawback of the pyrometer and the thermographic camera is the measurement error due to emissivity errors. Since the Yankee cylinder have a varying surface finish the emissivity varies a lot along the surface introducing temperature errors as large as ΔT=30°C.

Two methods that claim to be emissivity independent were investigated; double-band and gold cup pyrometers. Double-band pyrometers require the target to be a grey body and for it to have large temperatures, T>300°C, making this method unsuitable for measuring the surface temperature of the Yankee cylinder.

Gold cup pyrometers require the gold hemisphere to have a reflectance of ρ=1. Because of the environment surrounding the Yankee cylinder it would be difficult keeping the gold hemisphere as clean as required making this method unsuitable as well.

Abstract:
Gu yanwu (1613-1682) is a major chinese thinker of the xviith century. Scholars in china and japan have since studied his life and works, but scarce attention has been paid in the west. From his countless opuses rises a double-headed figure : gu appears as a nationalist, or as a modern scientific thinker, but seldom as both at a time. An eyewitness to the decay of the ming dynasty, gu is a nationalist, a staunch foe of the manchu usurpers, turning into a symbol, in the late xixth century, of all men prepared to overthrow the qing and establish a national, modern political system in china. An utter confucianist, he is convinced of the need to build up a new orthodoxy, devoid of metaphysical speculations. These, for gu, account for china's decay under ming and qing rule; the classics are an indispensable key to the problems of the day

Schwartz, Samuel Robin. "The Artificial Yankee: Invention, Aesthetics, and Violence in American Literature and Technology." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194687.

Full text
Abstract:
This project considers the objective and material manifestations of invention, as well as the subjective processes (creative and mechanical) that invention signifies, in order to examine the historical, aesthetic, and ideological roles that invention plays within American literature. I argue that invention calls attention to a paradox within American culture that literary texts are especially adept at revealing: the newness that invention fetishizes often contains a violent underside, which American literary authors both depict and complicate. In chapter 1 I establish the project's foundation--how invention became such a culturally prominent mode of action, and how inventions came to symbolize the march of American "progress." I treat the rhetoric of invention as a text which can be close-read for what it reveals about the role of American artifice in the nation's self-conception.In chapter two I argue that Herman Melville's Typee delivers a series of inventive counter-narratives that disarm the stereotypes that support colonization, and that deflate the sense of superiority that propelled Western colonialism. Using the rhetoric of invention against itself, including its portrayal of patents and intellectual property as necessary regulative mechanisms in the advancement of technology and industry, Typee undermines this logic by tapping into the subversive potential of invention as a creative force.Chapter two examines the various historical, aesthetic and disciplinary roles played by a specific American invention: the world's first automatic weapon. Arguing that its power to subdue crowds was due more to its cultural status than its actual use, I examine the paradox presented by a weapon like the Gatling gun and its depiction in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee: that its elegant appearance and functionality, as well as the latency of the threat it posed, was a power that operated by taking advantage of aesthetic perception. The project's final chapter investigates the poetry and prose of Ezra Pound and Mina Loy for the enthusiasm it registers for, as Pound phrased it, "Machine Art." I argue that the formal invention that drove modernism cannot be divorced from the prominence of mechanical invention that American industry made prominent through the turn of the century.

Abstract:
Cormac McCarthy’s western novels have made him one of the most prominent authors in contemporary American fiction, and they have received a great deal of critical attention. Yet the western novels were preceded by four novels set in East Tennessee that set the mythic, historic and thematic template for McCarthy’s later work. Like East Tennessee itself, McCarthy’s early works have suffered from a lack of detailed critical and historical analysis. I contend in this study that McCarthy’s Southern work can only truly be understood when read within the context of East Tennessee exceptionalism, and I shall explore how the mythic and historic character of the region is played out in McCarthy’s Southern aesthetic. I will also show how this region and McCarthy’s work is unique within Southern letters, the most marginal, dispossessed area within the large South itself. This is captured with East Tennessee’s struggle to resist modernity following the birth of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and this struggle forms the central component of McCarthy’s Southern aesthetic. Two strands of comparative analysis help us in establishing the centrality of East Tennessee exceptionalism to McCarthy’s work. Each chapter will compare his work to that of other Southern authors in order to show that McCarthy is an author who maintains a mythic and very Southern interest in myth, albeit in terms very different to the Southern renaissance. Each chapter will also include a comparative analysis of his later work in order to highlight how the imaginative and mythic culture of East Tennessee informs Blood Meridian and the Border Trilogy.

The purpose of the essay is to develop a holistic collection method for selection critera by using service logic and sustainability and an evaluation method and also investigate the difference between customer criteras and producer criteras. Theories in the essay are derived from classical product development combined with service research and especially service innovation. To answer the four research questions, below, a case study has been conducted. 1. How should the criterias be generated to ensure a holistic perspective? 2. When evaluating products which criterias should be used? 3. How should the criteria be used to ensure that the product meets the imposed requirements? 4. Due to customer and user involvation, how does the criterias change in the development process? The result of this essay is an evaluation method for Yankee head insulation using a product specification, Phal and Beitz's elimination matrix, Pugh's decision matrix, and Kesselring's matrix. When the evaluation method was developed an analysis was cunducted of the process and how customer and user involvement affected the criteria used in the method. The essay contributes to further knowledge of customer and user involvation in the development process as well as a method for how customers and users' knowledge can be used in the evaluation process.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the role of cultural policy as a tool of power in 20th century China. By focusing on different categories of popular culture in their historical, political, intellectual and social context, this research shows how the notion of culture is, and has always been an important stake of the struggles taking place in the ruling elite. Through anthropological, historical and comparative analysis of several social and cultural activities -yangge dance, qigong exercises, festivities linked with some pilgrimages or traditional celebrations - this dissertation highlights the will of the chinese communist party to build a policy governing national cultural practices. Illustrations taken from fieldwork in Beijing and Shaanxi clarify not only the process of the making of cultural traditions and the issues it entails bu also the place these activities occupy in the emergence of a civil society and their role in the project of building a "spiritual civilization"

Abstract:
This thesis is about a category of Buddhist sculpture from Ming-oi (ground temples) and Shorchuk (cave temples), two ancient Buddhist enclaves located along the Northern Silk Route within Yanqi (Karashahr) in present-day Xinjiang. The Yanqi works were removed from their original temple sites, and are now mostly scattered outside of China in various museum holdings around the world. Consequently, Ming-oi and Shorchuk are today forlorn archaeological sites that have received scant attention from contemporary scholars. The disconnected Buddhist sculpture also remains relatively obscure and is left with a long-standing problem of not having an established dating. Although the sculpture has k;generally been assigned to the Tang period, this thesis seeks to establish that it belongs to a much earlier context and may have served as the prototypical models for early Chinese Buddhist art. That the Buddhist art of ancient Xinjiang represents the stylistic inspiration for early Chinese Buddhist sculpture is not a new notion. Scholars in the past have recognised the possible influence on China of pre-existing Buddhist art from the Tarim Basin. In doing so, they were faced with a dating problem, as this would have required the Yanqi works to have been much older than the Tang period dating that had theretofore been assigned to them. Nevertheless, the fragmentary and non-mainstream Yanqi works of clay manufacture have attracted no attempt to solve a seemingly obvious chronological puzzle since they were unearthed almost a hundred years ago. The solution to the puzzle is long overdue. It is the principal raison d' etre for this thesis. Through an extended review of Yanqi's general and Buddhist history, based on textual evidence, in conjunction with stylistic analysis of the relevant architectural and sculptural evidence, this thesis concludes that the 4th - 5th century AD is the more logical art historical context for the Yanqi Buddhist sculpture

Abstract:
Ahlstrom-Munksjo is a global company within the paper industry. Their mill in Billingsfors was in need of an energy audit, localizing energy ows within the mill. An energy audit is a good tool for any company to get a good overview picture of their energy usage of the examined system, it is also seen as the rst stage for an energy-saving strategy. On the Billingsfors mill, the energy audit is included in the continuous work of increasing their energy eciency in order to keep up with the new regulations and advancements in this industry sector. The energy audit was done on the whole mill with focus on the paper production and the district heating system. More detailed information about the paper production, a comparative study of two paper machines, PM2 and PM6, is also presented. The reason for the comparative study on PM2 and PM6 was due to an unexpectedly high recorded gas consumption from PM2. The two paper machines were believed to be similar enough to compare them without any deeper knowledge of the machines. They were also compared to a reference machine, representing an average machine with similar setup. The comparisons showed that PM2 does in fact have a higher gas consumption than PM6. To identify the reason for the higher consumption the dry solid contents of PM2 needs to be examined. The two machines do not have the exact same process when producing paper and a more detailed comparative study should be done for a better understanding of the high gas consumption. However, the two machines have a lower gas consumption than the reference machine, this meaning they both have a relatively low gas consumption.

Abstract:
Yankee peddlers were ubiquitous in the countryside and in the imagination of the Old South. Social and economic forces pushed young men off the farms of rural New England and pulled them into an expanding, national market. The shortage of land for a burgeoning population spurred the exodus from the countryside, while the lure of profits from a vocation with low entry costs attracted many young men who preferred seeking the main chance in the commercial marketplace to a state of protracted dependency as a farm hand, a factory operative, or an outwork producer. Hired by firms to peddle clocks, tinware, and other "notions," their experiences in the marketplace transmogrified these deracinated New England farm boys into sharp, itinerant traders. In the course of this transformation, these migrant workers from New England were indelibly marked by the culture in which they were raised, even as they moved away from familiar values to embrace an emerging market creed.;The thousands of young men from New England who peddled in the South between 1800 and 1860 provided rural southern households direct access to consumer goods. They joined native southern petty merchandisers---hucksters, cake bakers, watermen and groggery keepers---in an interracial, face-to-face economy whose actions threatened the fixed ranks and organic hierarchy of slave society. The Yankee peddler gradually became a more threatening figure to southern planters. Antebellum southern sensibilities towards northern society and market institutions evolved from Southerners' real and fictionalized encounters with Yankee peddlers. Virginia planters hated debt, even as they continued to consume goods they could not afford, and rather than fault themselves for high living, they blamed the agents of consumer desire---Yankee peddlers---for conspiring with women and enslaved dependents to undermine their authority and worsen their economic plight. Southern caricatures of the Yankee peddler put a face on the impersonal forces of the national marketplace that intruded into traditional exchange networks. The fictive Yankee peddler's violation of the southern home elucidates the apprehensions antebellum southern society experienced as it was integrated into the national market and edged towards secession.

Bittner, Jessica. ""To Milk the Yankee Tourists": Mid-20Th-Century Heritage Practice and the Social Construction of Whiteness in the American South." W&M ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1550153833.

Abstract:
This paper considers the appropriation of Indigenous heritage in northwest Georgia during the mid-20th century. Through this case study of the first state-funded historic preservation project in the state at Etowah Indian Mounds, I apply a recent theorizing on the nature of whiteness, settler colonialism, and the role of heritage in cementing racialized structures of colonial rule. I outline the long history of Indigenous dispossession and settler appropriation in the American South to show how the origins of Indigenous heritage tourism built on an established settler colonial apparatus that deployed race to service commercial and economic development schemes. in this vein, my study highlights state-funded infrastructural development, newspaper reports, commercial interests, and community practice as key nodes in an integrated system facilitating appropriation and solidifying white control over space and place. to tackle this complex interdependence, I formulate a conception of heritage practice drawn from Hargrove's (2009) model of whiteness as habituated cultural practice, and tie this discussion into heritage studies emphasizing the transformation of historic landscapes into white public space. I then contextualize heritage building at Etowah within an evolving tourism economy and New South ideology that positioned white supremacy in relation to modernity, and demonstrate how GHC practitioners utilized archaeology and architecture to reinforce this ideological framework at Etowah Mounds. Tracking trends in the press coverage of ongoing preservation activities at Etowah Mounds, my study charts the gradual production of heritage values tied not to commercial interests but to the site's perceived historical and archaeological significance as Georgia's flagship preservation project. I argue that the repositioning of this site as national patrimony served to legitimate the appropriation and continued possession of Indigenous land, resources, and material culture by establishing ancestral connections between white communities and the region's pre-contact inhabitants.

Abstract:
Many recent studies have highlighted the substantial health-related impacts of particle number (PMno) rather than particle mass. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation of trace gases with PMno, to identify the chemical composition of particle different sizes and to predict the NOx and PMno over Yanbu Industrial City (YIC). Trace gases (NOx, SO2, H2S, O3, CO), PMno with diameter (7nm-10μm), traffic and meteorological parameters were measured at three sampling sites in YIC. The maximum PMno (333,971 cm-3) at downwind site#1 was about 2.5 times higher than that (123,842 cm-3) at upwind site#2 and about 1.2 times higher than that (263,572 cm-3) at downwind site#3. The average PMno distribution at downwind sites consisted of one distinguishable mode (nucleation mode<20nm) whereas the upwind site had two modes (the nucleation and the accumulation modes). The correlation of PMno with NO/NOx (r>0.7) are generally stronger than with NO2 at sites#1 and 2, whereas for site #3 the correlation between PMno with NO2/NOx are better than with NO. PMno has generally either weak or poor correlation with SO2 and CO, respectively. Particle samples of different sizes (7nm-10?m) were chemically analysed using an ion chromatograph (IC) for inorganic ions and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for trace metals at site#3. The ionic analysis revealed that sulfate and ammonium was mainly present in particle of size < 0.38μm while nitrate and chloride was mainly present in particles of size > 0.38μm. Non-sea salt sulfate was dominant in all particle sizes compared to the marine sulfate which is minor. The total sulfate and nitrate contributed 50.3% and 24.4% of the total ionic mass respectively followed by chloride (13.3%) and ammonium (10.6%). The trace-metals analysis results indicated that Na represented more than 94% of the total mass and the contributions of the remaining metals (Al, Sr, Zn, V, Cr, Fe, etc) were about 6%. A further part of this study consisted of the coupling of the WRF/CALMET system with the CALPUFF model, which was applied to predict NOx and PMno concentrations. The WRF model was employed to generate the meteorological input data for CALMET. WRF predictions were evaluated with surface data and upper air profiles using RASS/SODAR and radiosondes. WRF tends to underestimate the surface temperature on average with biases of up to -3.4°C and also underestimates temperature profiles with average biases ranging between -2.7 and -5.2oC when compared to the RASS profiler, but with a lower bias (< -2.4°C) when compared to radiosonde profiles. The mean wind speed bias for the majority of the cases was close to the benchmark of ±0.5m/s, but the mean wind direction bias for half of the cases exceeded the benchmark of 10o. It was concluded that WRF predictions can be used for air dispersion modeling to produce reasonable outputs. NOx predictions by CALPUFF showed that the contribution of the traffic to the highest concentrations during the nighttime was up to 80%, but after sunrise the contribution from industries became higher (up to 70%). The highest predicted NOx concentration (~313μg/m3) was much lower than the national ambient standard (660μg/m3) and the community area is affected much by industries during mid-morning hours when the wind shifting from land breeze to sea breeze. The fractional bias (FB) ranged between -0.1 and 1.06 indicating that the model tends to under-predict the NOx observations. PMno predictions of two sizes (7-40nm and 7nm-10μm) were derived based on the NOx predictions. All FB values were ranged between -0.1 and 0.5. It was concluded that PMno predictions were generally better than those of the NOx due mainly to adding the background term (intercept) for the PMno predictions.
