Abstract:

Abstract:
Yanque, a village in the Colca Valley of southern Peru, was the capital of the Spanish province of Collaguas during the colonial period (1532-1821). It was also the seat of a Franciscan convent responsible for baptizing the native population, instructing them in Catholic doctrine and Spanish social customs, and discouraging indigenous worship of ancestors, mountains, and forces of nature. Supervised by Franciscan friars and “master builders” hired in the nearby town of Arequipa, native workers constructed a church in the sixteenth century and rebuilt it on a grander scale after the walls and roof collapsed during the 1668 earthquake.

Abstract:

Abstract:
How families choose to transfer resources to the next generation is shown to be determined by goals and priorities derived from ethnocultural values. Two ethnically distinct Illinois farm communities, one of German-Catholic, the other of Yankee descent, having similar soils and geographic characteristics were investigated with: (1) an ethnographic field study; and (2) probated court documents over the century since settlement. Despite Germans engaging in more estate planning than Yankees, current German farms are smaller and income is supplemented with off-farm work; Yankee farms are larger, diversified with animals and worked full-time. German-yeoman values gave farm and ownership continuity high priority and, combined with large families and little inherited liquid assets, tended to keep heirs in agriculture and fragment estates. Yankee-entrepreneurial priorities led to diversified investments, greater liquid assets, but, more importantly, declining family size and greater outmigration resulted in larger portions for heirs and fewer farmers. These contrasting familial patterns cumulatively evolved communities along different paths: yeoman-Germans were committed to a vital, integrated community; entrepreneurial-Yankee disinterest produced a declining bedroom community that lacks cohesion.

We show that, for each value of α∈(-1, 1), the only Riemannian metrics on the space of positive definite matrices for which the ∇(α) and ∇(-α) connections are mutually dual are matrix multiples of the Wigner–Yanase–Dyson metric. If we further impose that the metric be monotone, then this set is reduced to scalar multiples of the Wigner–Yanase–Dyson metric.

Abstract:
The vast majority of tissue production uses creping to achieve the required set of properties on the base sheet. The Yankee coating helps to develop the desired crepe that in turn determines properties such as bulk and softness. The adhesion of the sheet to the Yankee surface is a very important characteristic to consider in achieving the desired crepe. The coating mix usually consists of the adhesive, modifier, and release. A good combination of these components is essential to achieving the desired properties of the tissue or towel, which often are determined by trials on the machine that can be time consuming and lead to costly rejects. In this paper, five compositions of an industrial Yankee coating adhesive, modifier, and release were examined rheologically. The weight ratio of the adhesive was kept constant at 30% in all five compositions and the modifier and release ratios were varied. The normal force and work done by the different compositions have been shown at various temperatures simulating that of the Yankee surface, and the oscillatory test was carried out to explain the linear and nonlinear viscoelastic characteristic of the optimal coating composition.

AbstractWhen the United States invaded Nicaragua in 1912 the popular reaction in El Salvador was so strong that it completely upended politics. The article argues that this anti-imperialist movement, completely ignored by the current historiography, forced Salvadorean governments to make decisions regarding foreign policy that would have been unthinkable had it not been for the pressure from below. Popular pressures contributed to limit the scope of the final version of the Chamorro–Bryan Treaty between the United States and Nicaragua. The treaty did not include Platt Amendment-like provisions. Moreover, the Wilson administration abandoned the idea of extending a protectorate to all the Central American countries and building a naval base in the Gulf of Fonseca.

Full text
Abstract:
Yangge is a popular rural dance in north China. In the Yan'an era (1936–47) the Chinese Communist Party used the art form as a political tool to influence people's thinking and to disseminate socialist images. During the early years of the People's Republic of China, the Communists introduced a simpler form of yangge in the cities. In three major yangge musicals performed in Beijing, the Party attempted to construct “a narrative history through rhythmic movements” in an effort to weave the developments of the Party's history into a coherent success story, affirming various themes: the support of the people, the valour of the Red Army, the wise leadership of the Party and the country's bright future. However, urban yangge's simplicity as an art form, the professionalization of art troupes, the nation's increasing exposure to a variety of alternative dance forms and, worse still, stifling government control all contributed to the rapid decline of this art form in urban China.

Abstract:
Based on the support of RS and GIS technology, this paper analyzes the spatial and temporal variation characteristics and driving forces of land use in the Yanhe River Basin through the processing and interpretation of remote sensing images in different periods from 1980 to 2015 and the methods of the land use transfer matrix and dynamic attitude. The results show that cropland, grassland, and forest land are the three types of land use with the most obvious changes, while urban land and water body have relatively small changes in the Yanhe River Basin. The transfer between cropland, forest land, and grassland and urban land is very obvious, among which the conversion rate of cropland is the highest. During the 15 years from 2000 to 2015, the land use types of the Yanhe River Basin changed by 13.17%, with an average annual growth rate of 0.88%. The implementation of ecological restoration and governance policy is the direct driving force of land use change in the Yanhe River Basin. The results obtained in this study can provide reference basis for land use planning and management and land use structure optimization in the Yanhe River Basin in the future.

Abstract:
Lupins (Lupinus angustifolius cvv. Yandee and 75A-258 and L. pilosus cv. P. 20957) and pea (Pisum sativum cv. Dundale) were grown in the field for 43 days on a solonized brown soil. Shoots of L. pilosus and peas grew most rapidly, while L. angustifolius cv. 75A-258 developed a relatively large root system. L. angustifolius cv. Yandee, a commercial lupin cultivar, was poorly adapted; shoot growth was restricted and roots ceased growing 36 days after sowing. The soil factors responsible for these widely differing responses were investigated. Once primary roots of L. angustifolius were 20-30 cm deep, root extension was slow or arrested. Indeed, primary root apices of Yandee were often necrotic in the soil below 20 cm. In contrast, roots proliferated rapidly in the surface 20 cm of the soil, particularly in 7SA-258, suggesting that factors in the deeper soil layers restricted root growth most severely. The vigorous growth of lateral roots of 75A-258 was reflected in a 2.6 fold greater total root length than for Yandee 43 days after sowing. Soil physical properties were not considered a likely explanation for these observations; soil water status and porosity were always favourable for root growth and root sections indicated that no cortical degradation, typical of O2 deficient roots, had occurred. Penetrometer resistance and root tip osmotic pressures suggested that poor root growth could not be ascribed simply to soil mechanical properties. The results suggest, by inference, that soil chemical factors could underlie the phenotypic responses observed.

Full text
Abstract:
From 1990 to 1993, samples of coral trout, Plectropomus leopardus, were collected at two coral reefs closed to fishing since 1987 in the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR). The age structure was dominated by a strong cohort which settled in early 1984 and which accounted for 54%, 45%, 42% and 36% of the experimental hook-and-line catches at Glow and Yankee reefs. Catch rates (fish person-1 hour-1) per age class per reef per year provide the first reliable estimates of the exponential rate of mortality of coral trout in zones of the GBR Marine Park closed to fishing. The annual mortality rate between the ages of 6 and 9 years was 0.115 (s.e. 0.040) at Glow reef and 0.189 (s.e. 0.100) at Yankee reef. The annual mortality rate between ages 6 and 9 years was 0.147 (s.e. 0.028) at the two reefs combined. Age-specific estimates of annual mortality ranged from 0.024 (age 7–8 at Glow) to 0.442 (age 6–7 at Yankee) but were unreliable because of small sample sizes. This is one of the first estimates of mortality rate of an exploited species in an area closed to fishing in the tropics.

Abstract:
Water scarcity is mostly a man-made problem that increasingly affects people's lives and questions economic output in Northern China. Policy options addressing the serious water shortages in the region include conservation and water management reform, which is unpopular; grain imports and the downsizing of agriculture; derivation of Yangze water; derivation of the Amur and other international rivers. All solutions present major difficulties, whether domestic or international, for the Chinese authorities. While major decisions have not yet been taken, evidence shows major works such as water transfers from the Yangze or water pricing are not only unavoidable, but will not be enough to meet the growing demand for water in the region.

Abstract:
Accurate remote sensing water extraction is one of the primary tasks of watershed ecological environment study. Since the Yanhe water system has typical characteristics of a small water volume and narrow river channel, which leads to the difficulty for conventional water extraction methods such as Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI). A new Multi-Spectral Threshold segmentation of the NDWI (MST-NDWI) water extraction method is proposed to achieve the accurate water extraction in Yanhe watershed. In the MST-NDWI method, the spectral characteristics of water bodies and typical backgrounds on the Landsat/TM images have been evaluated in Yanhe watershed. The multi-spectral thresholds (TM1, TM4, TM5) based on maximum-likelihood have been utilized before NDWI water extraction to realize segmentation for a division of built-up lands and small linear rivers. With the proposed method, a water map is extracted from the Landsat/TM images in 2010 in China. An accuracy assessment is conducted to compare the proposed method with the conventional water indexes such as NDWI, Modified NDWI (MNDWI), Enhanced Water Index (EWI), and Automated Water Extraction Index (AWEI). The result shows that the MST-NDWI method generates better water extraction accuracy in Yanhe watershed and can effectively diminish the confusing background objects compared to the conventional water indexes. The MST-NDWI method integrates NDWI and Multi-Spectral Threshold segmentation algorithms, with richer valuable information and remarkable results in accurate water extraction in Yanhe watershed.

Abstract:
The study aimed to identify the relationship of mathematical and spatial inference result in Mawhiba Scale to the trend towards mathematics among intermediate stage students in Yanbu. The researcher used random sample method from different classes and schools in Yanbu schools. The study sample consisted of (181) students from population of (256) students studying in Yanbu intermediate stage students who passed Mawhiba scale. The researcher used two instruments in the current study, which are the trends towards mathematics scale, and the mathematical and spatial reasoning scale in Mawhiba scale. The researcher used the following statistical methods which are averages, percentages, and the correlation coefficients. Results of the study revealed that there is a positive relationship between the scores of mathematical and spatial inference on the Mawhiba scale and the intermediate stage students' attitudes towards mathematics and the correlation coefficient was (0.07) Where this value indicate a weak level of the relationship. This result is surprising, especially since many students achieved high scores in mathematical reasoning, while the grades of tendency towards mathematics were weak. This calls for new studies procedures that examine the reasons for weak attitudes towards mathematics among intermediate stage students in Yanbu.

Abstract:
The coastline of Yanbu was studied for sediment contamination at nine locations (north and south Yanbu) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The metal ions detected were copper, nickel, zinc, cadmium, chromium and lead, with concentrations of 1.35–73.0, 1.73–94.62, 5.88–241.10, 0.05–1.81, 4.81–201.01 and 0.08–23.33µgg–1 respectively. The standard deviation observed ranged from±0.5 to±0.53 for the analysis. The CVs ranged from 0.938 to 1.0, indicating the interdependence of the metal ions. Risk assessment indices (geo-accumulation, potential ecological risk and potential toxicity risk response) revealed that Site 9 was moderately polluted with copper, chromium and zinc and was severally polluted with cadmium. Cadmium was the highest accumulated metal, whereas lead was the least accumulated. The results indicated Site 9 had higher levels of heavy metals than sediments taken from the northern Yanbu sector. The southern site was polluted due to its proximity to the Yanbu industrial complex and sewage discharge point. Comparing the results of the present study with those of other national and international studies revealed comparable results, except at Site 9, where the concentrations of the metal ions were higher. Management strategies are suggested for the study area, which can also be used in other areas to avoid permanent threats to marine ecology.
