Abstract:
Based on the Theory of Contrastive Analysis and Inter-language Theory, this paper investigates the common initial errors of Korean fundamental Chinese learners in different groups. The data were analyzed by listening to it and were described with IPA. 7 initial errors were found in this paper, such as a) errors of recognizing and pronouncing “b” and “p”; b) errors of “z/c/s” and “zh/ch/sh” c) errors in pronouncing “r” and so on. In order to avoid contributing all the errors to the impact of first language transfer, the students were chosen with 3 different nationalities, including Korean, Pakistani and Brazilian. The participants are all at the same age without any experience of learning a third language. This research analyzed the errors’ reasons in terms of interlanguage transfer, intralingual transfer, students’ learning attitudes and the impact of target language. Softwares called Praat and Cooledit were used to analyze the data. The reasons were analyzed with the help of the format, burst and VOT of the spectrograms. The results indicated that some errors made by all the students from different countries are due to the difficulties of the target language. As for these mistakes, even some native speakers may make them in their daily life. The reasons for these errors can be traced back to the target language itself, rather than relating them to the negative transfer of the first language. At last, some useful pedagogical recommendations were mentioned to facilitate the Chinese language education.

Abstract:
The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period of political disintegration in medieval China. Foreign rulers of Wu Hu (“Five Barbarian Tribes”) captured the northern China during the 3rd – 5th centuries and established independent states through continuous military actions. This thesis aims at studying the relationship between the emperors and Buddhist monks in the Northwest empires in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, including the Former Liang (320-376), the Western Qin (385-400; 409-431), the Later Liang (386-403), the Northern Liang (397-439) and the Xia (407-431), by developing a theoretical model called “Hourglass Model”. The model provides a holistic framework for investigating not only the emperors’ changing attitudes towards Buddhism but also the dissemination of the Dharma by monks. In addition, the concept of “data visualization” is implemented to re-interpret various historical sources. The complex interaction among imperial clans and Buddhist practitioners is further analyzed with computer-aided historical research methods. This thesis hopes to reveal the inspiring nature of the political religion in China’s early medieval age and expand the scope of Chinese Studies by rethinking about foreign rulers and Buddhist monks’ roles in reshaping and vitalizing the Chinese civilization. Moreover, this study develops alternative approaches to the research on the history of Chinese Buddhism, and attempts to shed new lights on theories and research methodology.

In the area of Taiwanese literature, the history of Taiwan remains a popular topic among the authors. “A Primary Survey of Post- Nativisit Literature” published in 2007 by Professor Fan Ming-ju, indicates especially how junior authors construct scenes of early times by quoting various Taiwan-related reference documents. These authors, according to the survey, have constructed the history of people, families, and Taiwan. This thesis aims to discuss how memories are recalled about wars in Taiwan by using two books written respectively by two junior authors: Routes in the Dream, by Wu Ming-yi and Ghost Slayer, by Gan Yao-ming.Routes in the Dream is about how the protagonist manages to retrieve a long repressed memory of his father by dreaming. He travels back in time in the dream to World War II, when his father was still young. His journey begins in the nature of human world and extends beyond to the worlds of animals and the God.Ghost Slayer mainly describes how the young boy, Pa, becomes a Taiwan-Japanese soldier. Set in the Japanese colonial period, this tragic story of Taiwan even concerns the 228 Incident, though presented with magical elements blended into the realistic atmosphere. These two new-generation writers who were born in 1970''s successfully create a new literary aesthetic vision for all the readers by reinvestigating the tragic history of Taiwan. We try to classify these two books into the category of post-folklore fictions proposed by professor Fan Ming-ju and discuss if this classification is proper. On the other hand, we will discuss if new-generation writers concern the same historical events while writing the historical fictions as compared with the elder writers in 2000’s. that In addition, we will analyze whether the new-generation writers provide the readers another perspective to think more by writing out of the box. Finally, we will discuss about new elements of literature and recognition of identity and find out other historical images of post-nativisit fiction which were not been fully discussed by professor Fan Ming-ju.

"從「本土」到世界: 張系國、林燿德、吳明益科幻小說研究 = From "native" to global : a study on Chang Shi-kuo's, Lin Yao-de's and Wu Ming-yi's science fiction." 2014. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6116489.

Full text
Abstract:
In the previous studies on Taiwanese science fiction, researches mainly adopted the thematic or cultural approaches among the others to interpret the science fiction. Seldom did they study them macroscopically and investigate the relationship between this kind of creative work and Taiwanese Literature. This thesis proposes that there exists an intertwined relationship between Taiwanese science fiction and the "native" discourse of Taiwanese Literature. Science fiction, as a literary genre, comes from the West and is known for its ability to transcend the boundaries of nation and ethnicity to discuss the universal topics. By introducing this genre and creating this kind of literary works, those writers open up the "globe perspective" in their works and examine the Nationalist sentiment in the "native" discourse. Hence, Taiwanese science fiction places heavy emphasis on the influence of Cultural Globalization upon Taiwanese writers’ reflections on Taiwanese history and culture. Under the context of Globalization, writers must face the influence of foreign cultures on "native" Taiwan and actively contemplate the common direction for creative works in Taiwanese and World Literature.
To further discuss how Taiwanese science fiction’s reflection upon the concept of ‘Native’, this thesis will study the science fiction of three writers to illustrate the Taiwanese science fiction’s development from "Native" to "Global" as follows: (1) In the 70s and 80s, Chang Shi-kuo (b.1944) examines the Nationalist sentiment in Nativist Literature through Science Fiction while he also traces the history of the separation between Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party, which is of vital importance to the immigrant writers’ identity; (2) Lin Yao-de (1962-1996) explores the violent nature of the "nativist" discourse by science fiction. Meanwhile, under the influence of Japanese popular culture over the young writers, he also reviews Taiwanese History during the Japanese occupation; (3) After the millennium, Wu Ming-yi (b.1971) investigates the ethnic culture in the "native" discourse and examines the aborigine’s ways to cohabit with the nature. He also transcends the boundary of a specific ethnic group to create the imaginative history of relocation of the Austronesian (that is the aborigines). Through examining the science fiction of the above writers, the thesis would illustrate how the Taiwanese science fiction is transcending the limits of the particular "native" discourse and displays its universality.

Wu, Yen is one of the most important sphragists in history of Chinese calligraphy. He and Chao Meng-Fu advocated “retro style”, which highly influenced people’s perspectives for sigillography in Yuan dynasty, and also built up the foundation for “master of great sigillography in Qin and Han dynasty”. Especially Wu Yen’s ‘Thirty-five Adductions’ is the mother of sigillography; it also has significant impact on the development of sigillography afterworld. Wu, Yen had lots of apprentices, and Wu, Rui and Zhu, Gui were the most successful ones. Wu, Rui’s Seal script and Clerical script and Zhu, Gui’s hand made sigillography represented that scholars establishing the art of sigillography had become a trend . Via this research, we can understand how the evolution of sigillography in Yuan affected afterworld from Wu, Yen and his apprentices three generation.

Sun Yat-sen and Wu Pei-fu were the leaders of two different political groups. Through the active action by Soviet Russia and Comintern to bring them together, Sun and Wu tried to cooperate from 1922 midterm to early 1923. According to the issue of the cooperation was successful or not, there are two different opinions about the research. Some researchers thought that it had been successful due to the Cabinet of Wang Chong-hui established on September 19, 1922. And the others with opposite viewpoint. This article aims to discuss the differences between two opinions and the cooperation’s results, in the other hand, to discuss the motivation of Soviet Russia pushed the cooperation and the relationship of the cooperation between Sun and Wu. The method of this article is to analyze Chinese and Russian historiography and archives, focus on the relationship among Soviet Russia, Sun and Wu. The major data are from Soviet Russia, including those published and some archive from Soviet government and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to Chinese historiography and Kuomintang’s Huan-Long Road archives. There are five chapters: The first chapter illustrates the research objective, method, literature review, scope, framework and limitations. The second chapter discusses the process of Soviet Russia and Comintern looked for union partners and finally let Sun and Wu cooperated and set up a new regime. The third chapter discuss the process of ambassador--Joffe worked hard tried to bring Sun and Wu together, and the role in the activity. The forth chapter analyzes the reasons of failed cooperation. The last chapter is conclusions. From the study, we could find that it was one of the diplomatic skills of Soviet Russia to let Sun and Wu went to cooperate. Its ultimate objective is to recover the relationship between China and Soviet Russia and open the gateway of negotiation with China and build up the channel of Communism in order to accomplish the thinking of World Revolution. The cooperation of Sun and Wu, and set up new regime are the trigger of objectives. To Soviet Russia, the cooperation of Sun and Wu was just a communicative channel between China and Soviet Russia, which was one of the strategies for Soviet Russia to achieve their goals. According to the cooperation was success or not, from the archives of Soviet Russia, we could find that Joffe didn’t regard the Wang Chong-Hui Cabinet as a symbol of the cooperation between Sun and Wu. Finally, Joffe thought that it was impossible to let the cooperation of Sun and Wu come true, for this point, there are some discussion in this study. The conclusion is that the cooperation of Sun and Wu didn’t carry out.

It continues the theme and basic construction of Yan yi bian, and keep the genuine appearance during selecting and editing, ensuring the preservation of rare works and also have a better adjustment and explanation. Later, Guang yan yi bian not only has become in the selection of Xu yan yi bian, but also a reference for many late works. However, scholars seldom use Guang yan yi bian as research topic. This thesis takes Wu, Da-Zhen, Guang yan yi bian as the topic, and have a full observation and discussion on the compilers and Guang yan yi bian. This thesis firstly examines the life of the compilers and, taking the past research and articles as references thus defines the timeframe of Wu, Da-Zhen’s life, then tracks down his courtesy name and native place. Furthermore, it discusses the versions and compliance of Guang yan yi bian based on the preface, notes and historical background. The chapter 3 concludes the main resource origin and the relation between this work and others, based on the examination and analysis of records for post works and 595 articles of Guang yan yi bian. The Chapter 4, it is about the range and contents of 25 categories in Guang yan yi bian, and explain its literary value and its impaction on the later works. Finally, it discusses about other novels in Yan Yi, and specifies the relation between them and Guang yan yi bian. With the research and discussion, hope we could provide a deeper understanding of Wu, Da-Zhen’s Guang yan yi bian to scholars, and show the value of his compilation.

"Hepatoprotection of the traditional Chinese medicinal formula Wu-zi-yan-zong-wan against chronic alcohol-induced injury." Thesis, 2008. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074567.

Full text
Abstract:
Finally, the hepatoprotection of the 50%EtWZ was evaluated using rat model. The results indicated that the 50%EtWZ possessed potent hepatoprotective activities. The protective effect of the extract against hepatotoxicity induced by long-term treatment with ethanol might be attributed to its inhibitory action on oxidative stress. Although multiple factors could be involved in the inhibition of oxidative injury in the liver, the inhibition of CYP2E1 pathway and the enhanced GSH-related antioxidant capacity might be responsible for the protective effect. In addition, the 50%EtWZ also produced anti-inflammatory effect partly by interfering Toll-Like-Receptor-4 (TLR-4)-mediated signal pathway and reducing the production of Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (INF-alpha) in Kupffer cells during long-term ethanol exposure.
First, in order to determine which kind of extract possesses the strongest hepatoprotective effect on ethanol-induced cytotoxicity, various extracts were screened for cytochrome P450 2E1 isoenzyme (CYP2E1) inhibitory activity using the fluorogenic CYP2E1 substrate and HepG2 cells overexpressing human CYP2E1. The results showed that all extracts (aqueous, 50% ethanol, and 90% ethanol) of WZ produced inhibitory effect on CYP2E1. The 50% ethanol extract of WZ (50%EtWZ) displayed a stronger CYP2E1 inhibition than the aqueous and 90% ethanol extracts. The aqueous extract and 50%EtWZ showed protective effect against ethanol-induced cytotoxicity at concentrations equivalent to 100 and 1000 mug raw herb/ml. At the same concentration of 100 1.1g/ml, the 50%EtWZ exhibited a more potent protective effect. Higher degree of cytotoxicity was found in the 90% ethanol extract of WZ. Thus, 50%EtWZ was chosen for further study.
In summary, all data suggest that the inhibition of CYP2E1 pathway and the inhibition of oxidative stress by the 50%EtWZ, together with the anti-inflammatory effect on Kupffer cells, may contribute to its hepatoprotection against chronic ethanol-induced liver injury.
Second, the chemical components of the 50%EtWZ were analyzed by chromatographic fingerprints. The fingerprint revealed six hepatoprotective compounds including schisandrin B, schisandrin, deoxyschisandrin, betaine, hyperin, and quercitrin in the formula.
Third, the protective mechanism of the 50%EtWZ was investigated in E47 cells model. The 50%EtWZ protected against CYP2E1-dependent toxicity and oxidative stress induced by ethanol. The mechanism of protection involved the decrease of reactive oxygen species production and the inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The hepataprotection was associated with the maintenance of mitochondrial GSH. Pre-treating E47 cells with the 50%EtWZ significantly inhibited the expression of CYP2E1. Therefore, the protective effect of the 50%EtWZ was most likely attributed to its antioxidant activities and the inhibition of CYP2E1. In addition, the 50%EtWZ prevented ethanol-induced apoptosis and protected against oxidative damage to mitochondria which are critical for maintenance of cell viability.
Wu-Zi-Yan-Zong-Wan (WZ), a traditional medicinal formula, is used for treatment of male sexual dysfunctions. In this study, the hepatoprotection afforded by Wu-Zi-Yan-Zong-Wan treatment and its biochemical mechanism involved against chronic alcohol-induced injury were investigated.

In Ming Dynasty, Wang-Gen, who established Tai-Zhou school, initiated Yang-Ming philosophy of mind into the education for common people on the way of social practice. The ideology of Yan-Jun, who inherited from Wang-Gen and imparted to Luo Jin-Qi, made him the key figure in history; however, due to his highly controversial character, his position in the history of Chinese thought was extremely ambiguous. This thesis mainly focuses on three parts of the studies--the crazily knight-errants characteristic of Yan-Jun, his and the practice of social lecture; in the meantime, it shows that his characteristic and idea coincide with his practice. The sense of mission, together with the strong and valuable ideology, urges him to proceed enthusiastic delivering lecture. The ridiculous speeching and activity of Yan-Jun during his whole life made him a controversial figure. Nevertheless, his selfless shoulders and positive aspiration which overflowed with the spirit of crazily knight-errants. In the aspect of ideology of Yan-Jun, this thesis integrates his entire ideas together and concludes that although his doctrines are simply constructed, it becomes a systematic ideology. In addition, it also makes talented explication about Confucianism. On the basis of the theory of Gui-Xin, Yan-Jun’s ideology employs “Da Cheng Ren Dao” as the main purpose and “Da Zhong philosophy” as the core of his doctrine. In the aspect of his social caring , he applies “Cheng Ji Cheng Wu” to carry out his ideals and devotes himself to delivering leature on the educational practice. Most of all, the most distinguish feature of the Yan-Jun’s delivering lecture is simplified confucianism and religious characteristic, and both makes him a controversial figure. This dissertation demonstrates the academic achievement of Yan-Jun by approving of the essence and the object of the confucianism of Yan-Jun, exploring the origin and development of his doctrine and analyzing its controversy and uniqueness.

The study investigates the wisdom embedded in Xitsonga oral prose narratives to address management skills and communication strategies used by current leaders in societies. Background information on animal and human communication is provided with a focus on leadership styles and skills. Selected documented Xitsonga oral prose narratives and narratives about current leaders were collected and analysed. The study is guided by the Critical Discourse Analysis, Interactional Sociolinguistics and Social Constructionist approaches. Data was classified per the selected categories of the verbal and nonverbal communication strategies. Communicative behaviours of characters in leadership positions in the oral prose narratives and those of the current societies were interpreted and analysed based on the selected approaches. Findings revealed that indeed, current leaders lack management skills and communication strategies. Examined leadership principles expected from many societal leaders were found to be non-existent. Cases of power mismanagement and dominance in the form of negative manipulation or influence were identified from their misuse of verbal and nonverbal communication strategies. Greed, anger and defective religious or ancestral beliefs were sources of such power mismanagement and dominance. Most subordinates suffered emotional, verbal and physical abuse, sexual harassment and displacement at the hands of their leaders in the society. Current leaders can learn much about management skills and communication strategies from the African languages oral prose narratives, particularly Xitsonga oral prose narratives. The study reveals that folklore is rich with ancestral wisdom, which can assist in current leadership problems. The study can be valuable to both leaders and their subordinates. Suggestions and recommendations are offered to the current leaders to help them decide on adjusting their communication strategies and ultimately changing their communicative behaviour. Current leaders should take a leaf from the wisdom embedded in oral prose narratives to address their lack of management skills and communication strategies to improve communication between them and their subordinates.
