Abstract:
Huai-Shan-Yao (Chinese yam; Rhizome Dioscoreae) is a common food in china. In the present study, we evaluated the protective effects of the crude extract of Huai-Shan-Yao on acute kidney and liver injuries in rats induced by ethanol. Results of pharmacological, biochemical and pathologic observations all showed that rats treated with the extract of Huai-Shan-Yao had decreased damage in renal tubules as well as decreased inflammation in the central vein and necrosis in the liver tissue.

Abstract:
Background:Yao syndrome (YAOS, OMIM 617321), formerly termed nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2(NOD2)-associated autoinflammatory disease, is characterized by periodic fever, dermatitis, arthritis, and swelling of the distal extremities, as well as gastrointestinal and sicca-like symptoms. This disorder shares similar clinical phenotypes with hereditary periodic fever syndromes (HPFS) and thus can mimic one another. Objectives:This study aimed to exemplify by a comparison of YAOS vs familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).Methods:In this retrospective study, electronic medical records of a series of patients with YAOS were analyzed. All patients underwent genetic testing for periodic fever syndrome 6-gene panel (MEFV, TNFRSF1A, NLRP3, MVK, NLRP12 and NOD2).Results:All patients were Caucasian and had recurrent fever, patchy erythema, arthralgia, and gastrointestinal symptoms (Table 1). With negative DNA sequencing for MEFV, these patients were treated with colchicine for presumed FMF, with a good response in patient 2 and minimal or transient response in other two patients. Further genetic testing identified the NOD2 variants. Unlike HPFS, YAOS is generally sporadic and is mostly reported in adults; spongiotic dermatitis is common; YAOS is associated with the NOD2 variants, IVS8 + 158 in nearly all patients, IVS8 + 158/R702W in up to 30%, and IVS8 + 158/1007fs, G908R or other rarer NOD2 variants in some patients. Conclusion:YAOS can masquerade HPFS like FMF. Molecular analysis should cover NOD2 whole gene sequencing to help distinguish these diseases.References:[1]Yao Q, et al. Abstract:
In this paper, we review some new distributed algorithms that construct sparse subgraphs with bounded degree of the unit disk graph efficiently for wireless ad hoc networks. They maintain a linear number of links while still preserving power-efficient routes for any pair of nodes. It was open whether the Yao plus reverse Yao graph and the symmetric Yao graph are spanners. We show that the Yao plus reverse Yao graph has a bounded power stretch factor 2 in civilized unit disk graph. In addition, we review a recent example by M. Grünewald et al. [6] to show that the symmetric Yao graph does not have a constant bounded stretch factor. Finally, we conduct simulations to study the practical performances of these structures. All structures have small power stretch factors for randomly generated unit disk graphs in our experiments.

We introduce Yao, an extensible, efficient open-source framework for quantum algorithm design. Yao features generic and differentiable programming of quantum circuits. It achieves state-of-the-art performance in simulating small to intermediate-sized quantum circuits that are relevant to near-term applications. We introduce the design principles and critical techniques behind Yao. These include the quantum block intermediate representation of quantum circuits, a builtin automatic differentiation engine optimized for reversible computing, and batched quantum registers with GPU acceleration. The extensibility and efficiency of Yao help boost innovation in quantum algorithm design.

Abstract Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing protein 2 (NOD2) is a cytosolic receptor. Both NOD2 and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) are critical in regulation of immune and inflammatory response. Yao syndrome (YAOS, OMIM 617321) is an autoinflammatory disease associated with specified NOD2 mutations. Herein, we report a well-studied case of YAOS masquerading as mast cell disorder and neuroendocrine tumors to support the involvement of VIP in YAOS. For the first time, this case study suggests a potential relationship between NOD2 and VIP. This could provide a novel avenue for mechanistic study of NOD2-associated disease.

Abstract:
During the colonial period, the Yao formed the main source of recruits for the King's African Rifles Nyasaland (Malawi) battalions. Originally, the main reason for the large number of Yao volunteers was probably the simple fact that the recruitment office was near Yao areas. However, due to prevailing racial ideals the British colonial military interpreted this as a sign of a ‘martial spirit’. This led to active encouragement to enlist the Yao, which in turn made military service ever more attractive among this group. They became the ‘martial race’ of Nyasaland, a concept which continued to affect British recruitment policies until the Second World War.

Abstract:
This paper explores the interplay between rhetorical and political violence during the Taiping Civil War (1851–1864). Specifically, I examine how yao 妖, a conception bearing many cultural and historical connotations, was profusely employed in Taiping propaganda and in individual testimonies reflecting traditional political and religious beliefs. In extant Taiping placards, the Taiping rebels used xiwen 檄文, the prose of “call to arms,” to persuade people to take up the Taiping cause and to solicit and justify violence. With the compilation and extensive distribution of these xiwen, visions of violence were disseminated among the masses. Drawing inspirations from ancient historical narratives, vernacular literature, and popular religion, the Taiping rebels ingeniously used yao to refer to demonic existences that should be extinguished with the Heavenly vision. In its versatility, the meaning of yao transmuted as the Taiping movement developed. At the beginning of the movement, yao was used broadly to refer to the Taiping’s religious opponents, however, since 1853, it became a core political and religious concept used to refer to the Manchus and their supporters. Nevertheless, the meaning of yao continued to transform as the Taiping rebels sought to convert local Han militias who were fighting for the Qing government. Ironically, the Han literati conversely used yao to describe the war and the Taiping rebels. When yao was associated broadly with the Manchus, Qing loyalists, and the Taiping rebels, its dehumanizing power became a force of destructive violence beyond comprehension.

Abstract. The SECHIBA module of the ORCHIDEE land surface model describes the exchanges of water and energy between the surface and the atmosphere. In the present paper, the adjoint semi-generator software called YAO was used as a framework to implement a 4D-VAR assimilation scheme of observations in SECHIBA. The objective was to deliver the adjoint model of SECHIBA (SECHIBA-YAO) obtained with YAO to provide an opportunity for scientists and end users to perform their own assimilation. SECHIBA-YAO allows the control of the 11 most influential internal parameters of the soil water content, by observing the land surface temperature or remote sensing data such as the brightness temperature. The paper presents the fundamental principles of the 4D-VAR assimilation, the semi-generator software YAO and a large number of experiments showing the accuracy of the adjoint code in different conditions (sites, PFTs, seasons). In addition, a distributed version is available in the case for which only the land surface temperature is observed.

Abstract:
The re/production of Chinese cultural identity is often fraught with contradictions. When China’s Yao Ming was drafted Number 1 in the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, he was supposed to reinforce and transcend Chinese/ Asian identity. Yao’s entrance into the NBA signaled a new understanding of Asian identity in the United States. To study this phenomenon, the author examined commentary from television broadcasts of U.S. NBA games featuring a prominent Asian athlete (Yao Ming) using critical discourse analysis. Analysis of 13 games from Yao Ming’s 2nd and 3rd seasons revealed that Yao is linguistically constructed as a panethnic Asian/Chinese person. In addition, the analysis upholds the stereotypes that Asian people are a “model minority” and unfit to play professional sports. Given the dearth of Asian players in the NBA, how do linguistic representations of Yao Ming in game commentary reinforce Asian and Chinese cultural stereotypes or create a new identity of China?

Abstract:
This paper provides an improved decision making approach based on fuzzy numbers and the compositional rule of inference by Yao and Yao (2001). They claimed to have created a new method that combines statistical methods and fuzzy theory for medical diagnosis. Currently, numerous papers have cited that work. In this study, we show that if we follow their matrix multiplication operation approach, we will obtain the same result as the original method proposed by Klir and Yuan (1995). Owing to a wellknown property of (row) stochastic matrices, if the multiplication is closed, the fuzzy and defuzzy procedure of Yao and Yao (2001) is redundant. Therefore, we advise researchers to think twice before applying this approach to medical diagnosis.

Abstract:
This paper tries to explore the ecological value and development potential of Yao-Dong from two parts: characteristics of the immature soil (Yao-Dong's main building materials) and ecological advantages of Yao-Dong. Organic integrity as basic starting point of the ecological architecture has been widely recognized. The architecture should first be examined in its ecological environment, and the architects should realize the meaning of human life and development by maintaining balance of ecological system. Chinese Yao-Dong is directly created out of natural soil layer of Loess Plateau. So out of nature, with nature, it is a typical example of harmony between man and nature, having great significance on the development of ecological architecture.

Abstract:
To establish the proper analgesic method by electroacupuncture (EA) for bovine surgery, the analgesic effect of dorsal and lumbar acupoints, in addition to the combination with dorsal and lumbar acupoints, were investigated in the present study. Four Korean native cattle (two males and two females) and 24 Holstein-Friesian cattle (all females) were used. The experimental animals were divided into four groups according to used acupoints: dorsal acupoint group (Tian Ping [GV-20] and Bai Hui [GV-5]: 7 heads), lumbar acupoint group (Yap Pang 1 [BL-21], Yao Pang 2 [BL-23], Yao Pang 3 [BL-24] and Yao Pang 4 [BL-25]; 5 heads), dorsal-lumbar acupoint group (Yao Pang 1 [BL-21], Yao Pang 2 [BL-23], Yao Pang 3 [BL-24] and Bai Hui [GV-5]; 8 heads) and control group (non-acupoints, the last intercostals space and the femoral area; 3 heads). The acupoints were stimulated with currents of 2–6 V (30 Hz) in dorsal acupoint group, 0.5–2.0 V (30 Hz) in lumbar acupoint group and 0.3–2.5 V (30 Hz) in dorsal-lumbar acupoint group. Recumbency time was 10 seconds to 1 minute (except one case) and induction time of analgesia was approximately 1 to 6 minutes in dorsal acupoint group. Analgesic effect was systemic, including the extremities in dorsal acupoint group. During the EA, the consciousness was evident and blepharo-reaction was still present under EA in dorsal acupoint group. During the surgery, grades of analgesic effect were 6 excellent (6/7, 87.5%) and 1 good (1/7, 14.3%). In addition, induction time for analgesia was about 10 minutes in both lumbar and dorsal-lumbar acupoint groups. Analgesic areas were found in abdominal areas from the last intercostal spaces to the femoral areas, except lower abdomen in lumbar and lumbar-dorsal acupoint groups. The consciousness was evident and standing position was maintained during EA stimulation in contrast to that of dorsal excellent (1/5, 20.0%), 3 good (3/5, 60.0%) and 1 poor (1/5, 20.0%) in the lumbar acupoint group. Additionally, grades of analgesic effect were 4 excellent (4/8, 50.0%), 3 good (3/8, 37.5%) and 1 poor (1/8, 12.5%). On the other hand, pain was present and analgesia was not accomplished under EA stimulation in control group. In conclusion, analgesia by EA was effective with decreasing order of dorsal acupoint > dorsal-lumbar acupoint > lumbar acupoint among groups. It was considered that dorsal acupoint group might be useful for operation with recumbent position, and lumbar and dorsal-lumbar acupoint groups might be proper for operation with standing position.

Abstract:
Between Chinese and Miao-Yao there exist a number of words which are similar in form and meaning. Whether Chinese is genetically related to Miao-Yao depends largely upon whether these words are cognates or loan words. This paper reviews the words which have been proposed as cognates, and compares them with cognates between Chinese and Tibeto-Burman. It is argued that some of these words are borrowed, whereas others are chance resemblances. Despite efforts made by many scholars, systematic correspondences between Chinese and Miao-Yao have not been established. The reason is that these words were borrowed from Chinese into Miao-Yao at different times and in different locations. This also explains why few of these words may be considered basic vocabulary.

Abstract:
Context: Genetic and environmental factors play an essential role in the pathogenesis of Graves' Disease (GD). Children with GD have less exposure time to environmental factors and therefore are believed to harbor stronger genetic susceptibility than adults. Objective: The aim of the study was to identify susceptibility loci that predispose to GD in patients with young-age-of-onset (YAO) GD. Setting and Design: One hundred six patients with YAO GD (onset <30 y) and 855 healthy subjects were studied. Cases and controls were genotyped using the Illumina Infinium Immunochip, designed to genotype 196,524 polymorphisms. Case control association analyses were performed using the PLINK computer package. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis program (QIAGEN) was used to carry out pathway analyses. Results: Immunochip genetic association analysis identified 30 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in several genes that were significantly associated with YAO GD, including major histocompatibility complex class I and class II genes, BTNL2, NOTCH4, TNFAIP3, and CXCR4. Candidate gene analysis revealed that most of the genes previously shown to be associated with adult-onset GD were also associated with YAO GD. Pathway analysis demonstrated that antigen presentation, T-helper cell differentiation, and B cell development were the major pathways contributing to the pathogenesis of YAO GD. Conclusions: Genetic analysis identified novel susceptibility loci in YAO GD adding a new dimension to the understanding of GD etiology.

Abstract:
Yao and Theta graphs are defined for a given point set and a fixed integer k > 0. The space around each point is divided into k cones of equal angle, and each point is connected to a nearest neighbor in each cone. The difference between Yao and Theta graphs is in the way the nearest neighbor is defined: Yao graphs minimize the Euclidean distance between a point and its neighbor, and Theta graphs minimize the Euclidean distance between a point and the orthogonal projection of its neighbor on the bisector of the hosting cone. We prove that, corresponding to each edge of the Theta graph Θ6, there is a path in the Yao graph Y6 whose length is at most 8.82 times the edge length. Combined with the result of Bonichon et al., who prove an upper bound of 2 on the stretch factor of Θ6, we obtain an upper bound of 17.64 on the stretch factor of Y6.

Abstract:
Rigorous sound correspondence is fundamental to historical linguistics. It serves as a solid start in studying genetic relationship. Regarding the genetic position of Miao-Yao languages, Li (1937) proposed a hypothesis that the Sino-Tibetan language family consists of Chinese, Tibeto-Burman, Kam-Tai, and Miao-Yao. Benedict (1942; 1975) excluded Miao-Yao from the Sino-Tibetan language family since sound correspondences between Miao-Yao and Chinese were considered to be caused by language contact. The key point in this debate has been ignored for a long time: are the related morphemes proposed in this debate supported by rigorous sound correspondence? In this paper, related morphemes across 11 Miao-Yao languages have been first identified under the requirement of complete sound correspondence, and then analyzed by the Rank Method. The result of the genetic relationship between the 11 Miao-Yao languages has been confirmed. The same procedure has been applied to Sino-Miao-Yao related morphemes, and similar pattern has been found. The Sino-Miao-Yao related morphemes were recognized to be inherited from the common ancestor of Chinese and Miao-Yao. Combined with the result from the perspective of pervasive sound correspondence (Wang 2015), the proposal of a genetic relationship between Chinese and Miao-Yao has been supported. The Inexplicability Principle has been used to weaken the possibility of Sino-Miao-Yao related morphemes being induced by borrowing from Chinese to Miao-Yao, since some sound correspondences are unlikely to be explained by natural phonetic mechanisms. Moreover, related morphemes in Chinese and Miao-Yao have been examined from the perspective of Old Chinese, and such an examination also supports the hypothesis of a genetic relationship between Chinese and Miao-Yao languages.

In this paper, we apply empirical likelihood methods to construct confidence intervals for the conditional variance based on the estimator of Fan and Yao (1998) and the reduced variance modification of Chen et al. The type section of the Ljubiš Formation, (Djokov Potok, Zlatibor area, western Serbia) is characterized by abundant poorly-to-moderately preserved radiolarians. The lower part of the type section is characterized by Middle Jurassic (?Bajocian to Bathonian) radiolarian assemblages with Japonocapsa fusiformis (YAO), Takemuraella weghae (GRILL & KOZUR), Eoxitus hungaricus KOZUR, E. baloghi KOZUR, Helvetocapsa matsuokai (SASHIDA), Quarkus japonicus (YAO), Hexasaturnalis suboblongus (YAO), H. tetraspinus (YAO). Taking into account previous data from the upper part of the Ljubiš Formation, the age of the formation can be estimated to be in the interval from the ?Bajocian to Bathonian-Oxfordian. The new biostratigraphic data clearly show the onset of tectonic motion in the Middle Jurassic, documented by the presence of mass transport deposits intercalated in the radiolarite successions. This suggests a Middle Jurassic onset of ophiolite obduction which triggered the rapid deepening of the Adria margin, documented by the abrupt change from carbonate to radiolarite deposition.

Abstract:
Chai Hu (Radix Burpleuri), a major ingredient in many traditional Chinese medicine formulas, such as Xiao Yao Wan, is used in the treatment of liver stagnation and spleen deficiency syndrome (LSSDS). The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of Xiao Yao Wan containing Chai Hu on the changes of plasma indices in patients with LSSDS. Fifty-eight cases of LSSDS were randomly divided into two groups: 41 cases in the experimental group were treated with Xiao Yao Wan containing Chai Hu and 17 cases in the control group were treated with Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan for one consecutive month in a single blind design. Before and after treatment, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was applied to determine the changes of plasma norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E) and dopamine (DA). Radioimmunoassay was performed to measure the amount of plasma β-endorphin (β-EP), adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T), and laser nephelometry was also conducted to measure plasma immunoglobulin A (Ig A) and G (Ig G). Compared to baseline levels, plasma β-EP was significantly increased ( p < 0.01), while E and DA were markedly decreased ( p < 0.01) after the administration of Xiao Yao Wan in the experimental group. The other indices did not change. This is the first evidence showing that the effect of Xiao Yao Wan containing Chai Hu on the treatment of patients with LSSDS may be through enhancing plasma β-EP and decreasing E and DA release. We conclude that Xiao Yao Wan containing Chai Hu regulates nervous and endocrine systems and contributes to the improvement of the clinical status of patients with LSSDS.

Abstract:
We present improved upper bounds on the spanning ratio of constrained [Formula: see text]-graphs with at least 6 cones and constrained Yao-graphs with 5 or at least 7 cones. Given a set of points in the plane, a Yao-graph partitions the plane around each vertex into [Formula: see text] disjoint cones, each having aperture [Formula: see text], and adds an edge to the closest vertex in each cone. Constrained Yao-graphs have the additional property that no edge properly intersects any of the given line segment constraints. Constrained [Formula: see text]-graphs are similar to constrained Yao-graphs, but use a different method to determine the closest vertex. We present tight bounds on the spanning ratio of a large family of constrained [Formula: see text]-graphs. We show that constrained [Formula: see text]-graphs with [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] and integer) cones have a tight spanning ratio of [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is [Formula: see text]. We also present improved upper bounds on the spanning ratio of the other families of constrained [Formula: see text]-graphs. These bounds match the current upper bounds in the unconstrained setting. We also show that constrained Yao-graphs with an even number of cones ([Formula: see text]) have spanning ratio at most [Formula: see text] and constrained Yao-graphs with an odd number of cones ([Formula: see text]) have spanning ratio at most [Formula: see text]. As is the case with constrained [Formula: see text]-graphs, these bounds match the current upper bounds in the unconstrained setting, which implies that like in the unconstrained setting using more cones can make the spanning ratio worse.
