Abstract:
Reviewing the articles within this journal in 2016 reveals a diverse set of approaches and applications but consistent themes: first, translating practice to science and, second, translating science to practice. The first theme addresses the difficulty in understanding cognitive performance in complex work environments. For this, we need improved models of the myriad activities of workers in complex operations—recognizing that experts will adapt their behavior and need to respond to unexpected situations. Many of this year’s articles note the need for multiple perspectives, for integrating multiple theories, and for recognizing that all parts of cognitive behavior are independent and, thus, no one factor can be isolated. The second theme, translating science to practice, then addresses the difficulty in applying this knowledge to improved designs. Such designs may focus on the worker (e.g., training), on processes and procedures, or on technology—regardless, they serve to translate understanding into implementation. A range of design approaches and insights are proposed in this year’s articles, in domains ranging from rugby to aviation, health care, accident analysis, and autonomous systems.

Abstract:
This article describes the motivation, design, and progress of the Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS). JOSS is a free and open-access journal that publishes articles describing research software. It has the dual goals of improving the quality of the software submitted and providing a mechanism for research software developers to receive credit. While designed to work within the current merit system of science, JOSS addresses the dearth of rewards for key contributions to science made in the form of software. JOSS publishes articles that encapsulate scholarship contained in the software itself, and its rigorous peer review targets the software components: functionality, documentation, tests, continuous integration, and the license. A JOSS article contains an abstract describing the purpose and functionality of the software, references, and a link to the software archive. The article is the entry point of a JOSS submission, which encompasses the full set of software artifacts. Submission and review proceed in the open, on GitHub. Editors, reviewers, and authors work collaboratively and openly. Unlike other journals, JOSS does not reject articles requiring major revision; while not yet accepted, articles remain visible and under review until the authors make adequate changes (or withdraw, if unable to meet requirements). Once an article is accepted, JOSS gives it a digital object identifier (DOI), deposits its metadata in Crossref, and the article can begin collecting citations on indexers like Google Scholar and other services. Authors retain copyright of their JOSS article, releasing it under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. In its first year, starting in May 2016, JOSS published 111 articles, with more than 40 additional articles under review. JOSS is a sponsored project of the nonprofit organization NumFOCUS and is an affiliate of the Open Source Initiative (OSI).

Abstract:
Why 1500? Why 1800? Why does Urban History's review of periodical literature use this definition of the early modern? Does urban history have a periodization of its own? The reluctance of historians to stray before and after 1800 is a major theme of C.R. Friedrichs's review of early modern German urban history, ‘But are we any closer to home? Early modern German urban history since German Home Towns’, Central European History, 30 (1998), 163–86, and I wondered about these issues while reading some of the articles published this year which did not stop and surrender their historical passports at 1500.

Abstract:
Ten years after the ISPO consensus conference on amputation surgery, a search of relevant publications in the Rehabilitation-prosthetics-literature over the years 1990–2000 was performed. The main key-words in this research were: “lower limb, amputation, human and rehabilitation”. One hundred and four (104) articles were assessed by reading and from these the authors selected 24 articles. These articles are summarised, under several subheadings in this review article, focussing especially on quality of life, functional outcome and predictive factors.

Abstract:
On 11 March 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). This study focuses on a narrative review about the illness during the first year of the pandemic in relation to obesity. Databases were used to search studies published up to 8 December 2020. In total, 4430 articles and other scientific literature were found, and 24 articles were included in this one-year narrative review. The mean BMI value of severe COVID-19 patients ranged from 24.5 to 33.4 kg/m2, versus <18.5 to 24.3 kg/m2 for non-severe patients. Articles using the terms obesity or overweight without indicating the BMI value in these patients were common, but this is not useful, as the anthropometric parameters, when not defined by this index, are confusing due to the classification being different in the West compared to among Asian and Korean criteria-based adults. We proposed a new term, called COVID obesity, to define the importance of this anthropometric parameter, among others, in relation with this pandemic.

Abstract:
Just as nature fails to produce the ‘perfect harvest’ with predictable regularity, so does the quantity of medieval urban periodical publications vary. The crop of 2005 falls well behind the richer harvests of previous years, in quantity though not in quality of the published work. Two impressions of this work: first, there are fewer obvious ‘themes’ which seem to preoccupy the authors' minds; but, secondly, articles by German and Austrian scholars show a greater concern with the exposition and analysis of major urban themes than do those from the English-speaking world. One wonders why. Could it be that German-speaking urban historians are less hesitant to re-address the seemingly obvious? Two prime examples here are presented by the contributions of Ferdinand Opll and Benjamin Scheller.

The calculator requires a lot of high quality data from medical journals, which is laborious to obtain by hand. In this thesis, I automate the process of obtaining medical abstracts from PubMed and develop a classifier that uses domain knowledge to determine relevant abstracts. The classifier is very accurate (percent correct = 0.898, F1 = 0.86, recall = 0.905), and is significantly better than the majority baseline. I explore an alternative model that exploits rationales within abstracts, which could lead to an even greater accuracy. After determining relevant abstracts, it's useful to find the size of the cohorts, which is an indicator for the quality of the medical study. Hence, I built a classifier that can accurately extract cohort sizes from abstracts (F1 = 0.883), and developed a strong baseline for distinguishing gene carrier cohort sizes from noncarriers.<br>by Heeyoon Kim.<br>M. Abstract:
The aim of this Field Study is to establish the extent to which Year 12 students understand and appreciate the ACT College System of senior secondary and the information which appears on the ACT Year 12 Certificate. In order to provide the reader with a basis for understanding what happens over the final two years of secondary education in the ACT the author has established the historical context that gave rise to the establishment of the Secondary Colleges in the ACT. This brief history outlines the causes and reasons which led to separation from the NSW state system of education and the decision to develop a different approach to the provision of education for students in Year 11 and 12. To provide an idea of how the system works a description of what makes up the College System is provided. This includes an explanation of how the colleges relate to the high schools, their curriculum, the accreditation of courses, assessment and certification. The role of the ACT Schools Accrediting Agency is explained in the way it underpins the credibility of the system and of how it carries the responsibility for the final generation of the ACT Year 12 Certificate. While this study looks at the system some seven years after it began, earlier evaluations had taken place which examined matters linked with the ACT Year 12 Certificate. In writing this report the author reviews two important assessments of the system, one of the role of the ACT Schools Accrediting Agency and the other concerned with the success of the Colleges as educational institutions from a student viewpoint. The author also attempts to compare the changes which came with the ACT College System with recent developments and current thinking about senior secondary education in other Australian states. The major part of the Field Study was a survey of a sample of Year 12 students at the end of 1983 to establish the extent to which they understood the aspects of the system they had been a part of for two years. The data and findings of this survey are presented. The report concludes with an outline of the most recent changes, developments and reactions which in some way affect the system. At the end of the conclusion, the author presents a list of recommendations aimed at overcoming some of the problems pin-pointed in the report.

York, Nicholas. "Corneal donations in South Africa: a 15-year review." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/28114.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Corneal pathology is one of the leading causes of preventible blindness in South Africa. A corneal transplant procedure can restore, or significantly improve vision in most of these patients. In current South African clinical practice however, there is a gross shortage of corneal tissue available to ophthalmologists to perform these procedures. There is little published data on corneal donations in South Africa describing the magnitude of the current problem. Objectives: To describe trends in the number of corneal donors per year, the number of corneal transplants performed each year, the origin of corneal donors, the allocation of corneas to the public or private sector and the demographics of corneal donors in South Africa. Methods: A retrospective review of all corneal donations made to South African eye banks during a 15-year study period from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2016. Results: A progressive year-on-year decline in corneal donors was found over the study period, from 565 donors per year in 2002 to 89 donors in 2016. As a direct result, there has been an 85.5% decrease in the number of corneal transplants performed per year using locally donated corneas, from 1049 in 2002 to 152 in 2016. 48.8% of donors originated from mortuaries, 39% from private hospitals and 12.2% from government hospitals. Donors originating from mortuaries showed the most significant declines over the 15 year period, decreasing by 94.8%. 79.3% of donated corneas were allocated to the private sector while 21.7% were allocated to the public sector. Demographic data showed that 69.1% of donors were male, while 30.9% were female. 77.2% were white, 14.0% coloured, 6.3% black and 2.5% Indian/Asian. Age of donors demonstrated a bimodal peak, at 25 and 55 years. Conclusion: The number of corneal donations in South Africa has markedly declined, causing the burden of corneal disease requiring corneal transplantation to continually rise. This study describes the magnitude and trends of the current problem in South Africa. The demographic data has identified certain low donor rate groups within the South African population, where there are possible cultural and other objections to corneal donation. These should serve as a major focus of future research and initiatives aimed at reversing the current trends.

Abstract:
Även motsägelser fanns i artiklarna. The purpose of the study is to investigate the quality and credibility of the articles collected from Google - describing fast weight loss methods as well as diets for martial arts. Method The method started with five search phrases related to weight loss pre-competition at martial arts. The five phrases where applied to the Google search engine and for each phrase the first five search results were selected. Search results were analysed with content analysis criteria analysing Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonability and Support. Detailed descriptions of how these quality parameters were assessed can be found below in text Result The results from the study showed that the articles analysed in this study with content analysis criteria do not have the desired credibility because only 12 % of the articles are based on facts. The results also showed that 35 % of the authors claimed to be experts and 41 % of the websites associated with the articles have a responsible publisher. Furthermore the study showed that the articles have low accuracy because no article is peer reviewed and only 6 % of the authors use scientific structure in their articles. Some of the articles even included contradictions. The study showed that the web pages have a low reasonableness because 53 % of the articles and web pages have a partial message to promote their products and education. The study shows that web sites associated with the articles has more than 76 % support. Conclusion Martial art athletes should understand that not all of the rapid weight loss information that appears in Google search results is based on science or facts, most of the information is no more than opinions that lack reference. None of the articles in the study were previewed by peers and few articles were written by experts. This means that accuracy and credibility are low according to the study's criteria. In addition, many authors try to sell either their products or training through their articles, but this is not a standard indicator that makes the quality low.

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent years, many changes have been taking place within the construction sector which is much more prone to innovate than in the past. New forms of processes are emerging with the introduction of digital technologies. This article aims to shed light on recent scientific advances that link Industry 4.0 to this sector. To this end, a review of articles published over the past 10 years reporting experiences and gains from 4.0 technologies applied to construction was conducted. It turns out that recent technological developments have brought new functionalities and new perspectives to companies. Some of these were not initially claimed with the sole deployment of a BIM approach. These new opportunities have ultimately raised questions as to whether and how they could impact the speed at which a digital transformation of the sector could take place.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives: The cost-effectiveness terminology is a common term used in the critical care medicine research. A systematic review analysis was conducted to study the patterns of the use and misuse of the cost-effectiveness terminology in the critical care medicine literature between 1998 and 2018. Methods: A search in the inCite journal citation report was done to identify all the critical care medicine journals. An independednt search done to identify all the articles between 1980 to 2018 that claimed in their abstracts/article to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). Eligible articles were included and analyzed using x2-test. The articles were categorized into four different levels based on the appropriateness of CEA terminology use. The analysis performed to assess the association between the appropriateness of CEA terminology and the journal impact factor (IF), author background, and the publication year (5-year time points). Results: Out of 7,835 articles in targeted subject category, 76 met the inclusion criteria, but 50 of them were analyzed. Of these 50 articles, 32 (64.0%) met the appropriate criterion of CEA terminology use. 71.4% of articles published in journals with IF: 3.0 - 21.4 were appropriately using CEA term compared to 54.5% studies that are published in journals with IF: 0.4 - 2.8. Of these articles, which are appropriately use CEA terminology, 56.2% of the articles have at least one author with health economics expertise. Conclusion and recommendation: The preliminary data suggest that there is an association between the level of appropriateness and journal impact factor and the author health-economic background authorship. However, we did not demonstrate changes in the level of appropriateness with time. Decision-makers, authors, and editors should pay better attention in seeking ways to monitor the appropriate use of “cost-effectiveness” terminology. More future studies should be done in this context.

Abstract:
This paper provides a systematic review of over 350 publications that document specific medical device examples in which the design and manufacturing relied on additive manufacturing processes (more popularly referred to as “3d Printing”). Existing reviews on 3d printing for medical device design focus on the range of clinical applications and potential uses for this technology. However, existing work tends to omit key medical device development and regulatory requirements pertaining to the use of 3d printing for technology translation. These omissions often present a skewed view of each device’s potential for rapid translation to commercialization and common clinical practice. To fill gaps in existing literature, this review includes medical device journal articles and identifies each article’s country of origin, the product development stage in which 3d printing was used, and the device’s specific type and classification under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The findings from this systematic review provide a detailed international snapshot of current additive manufacturing research and its near term potential for changing clinical practice.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Breastfeeding is the process of giving breast milk to infants from birth to 2 years of age. Breastfeeding twins requires more dedication than breastfeeding a single baby and there are many challenges in breastfeeding twins. This study aimed to review the psychological impact of mothers on breastfeeding twins. Subjects and Methods: This study used a scoping review study by using the Arksey &amp; O’Malley framework. Article identification was using 4 databases, namely Pubmed, Wiley, Sciene Direct, and Ebsco from 2004 to 2019. Keywords selected related to this study and based on the criteria of inclusion are mothers who have twins, full text, in English and Indonesian. The data were reviewed using the Preferred Reporting Items For Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) flowchart guidelines. Results: Nine articles were reviewed out of 1015 extracted. Nine of these articles were screened using the Joanna Briggs Institute. Articles were come from developed and developing countries. Based on the article, there were 2 themes, namely the psychological impact of mothers who breastfeed twins and the support provided by their families. The mother becomes stressed when caring for twins, feels physical exhaustion and the mother feels that the production of breast milk is not sufficient for the baby’s needs. Husband or family support regarding care for newborns during breastfeeding, caring for older children, helping with household chores and encouraging or supporting mothers to continue breastfeeding. Conclusion: The psychological impact that occurs in the mother of twins is that the mother feels stress and the support of her husband or family greatly influences the mother to overcome the psychology of the mother of twin babies. Wijewickrama, MKCS, Nicholas Chileshe, Raufdeen Rameezdeen, and J. Jorge Ochoa. "The Role of Government towards a Circular Economy in the Construction Industry: A Systematic Literature Review." In World Conference on Waste Management. The International Institute of Knowledge Management, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.17501/26510251.2021.1102.

Full text
Abstract:
A circular economy (CE) model provides an opportunity for the construction industry (CI) to keep the end-of-life materials in a closed loop with their maximum value while advocating the reduction of significant waste generation and natural resource extraction for the built environment. While previous studies in different geographical regions have been individually carried out on investigating the government engagement in the CE, no solitary study exists that holistically focus upon the role of government that steers the CI towards a CE. With this concern, the objectives of the current study are twofold. First, to investigate the roles through which the government contributes to implementing CE in the CI. Second, it outlines the potential research directions for future researchers to expand the domain under study. To achieve these objectives, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted based on the review protocol, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). A total of 125 articles available in four search engines from 2002 to 2020 were incorporated for both descriptive and content analysis. Most articles (19) were published in the year 2019, and China is the dominant country for publishing most of the articles in the area under study. The study found that the government influences the CE in the CI by playing four significant roles: regulating, subsidizing, encouraging and informing. Herein, the government should play these four roles jointly with the amalgamation of government agencies, research institutions and nongovernment associations. The article concludes by outlining the future research priorities to advance the understanding in the domain under study. The value of the study is that it explores an overlooked area in the existing literature while providing a direction for the CI practitioners to understand the government role in paving the path to a CE. Abstract:
Background: Every year, around 14 million women and girls aged 15 to 19 (both married and unmarried) give birth. This age group might lead to negative outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth. This scoping review aimed to identify the outcomes of adolescent pregnancy and its contributing factors. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selection; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The research question was identified using population, exposure, and outcome(s) (PEOS) framework. The search included Wiley Online Library, EBSCO, ProQuest, and PubMed databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 307 articles were obtained by the searched database. After the review process, seven articles were eligible for this review. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Six articles from developing countries (Brazil, Mexico, Zambia, Malawi, and Romania) and one report from developed countries (Australia) met the inclusion criteria with qualitative, quantitative (cross-sectional), and descriptive studies. The existing studies stated that adolescent pregnancy had adverse effects on both mother and babies’ health and well-being. Young maternal age is associated with low parity, lack of prenatal care, premature, and low birth weight. Factors contributed to the increased adolescent pregnancy rate were early sexual initiation, low use of contraception, low educational level, low socioeconomic status, inadequate knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, and gender disparity. Conclusion: Young maternal age contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes of both mothers and babies. Early sexual health education and health promotion on teenage girls may reduce the risk of adolescent pregnancy rates. Han, Xiaotian. "THE PLIGHT OF FIRST-YEAR TEACHERS IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS." In International Conference on Education and New Developments. inScience Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36315/2021end052.

Full text
Abstract:
First-year teachers are teachers who are new to teaching. The number of public school teachers is increasing in many countries and areas. Meanwhile, data also showed that some newly qualified teachers anticipated leaving or already left after the first year teaching. The purpose of the study aims to present a review and synthesize literature regarding the challenges of first-year teachers in public primary schools. Peer-reviewed articles (N=30) are collected from Google Scholar via systematically searching key words “first-year teachers” with one or more of the following terms: challenge, difficulty, attrition, leaving, and public primary schools. The results show first-year teachers meet general challenges listed as below: (a) building a professional teacher identity, (b) applying teaching theories in real class practice, and (c) handling the same heavy teaching loads and responsibilities as experienced teachers. In addition, first-year teachers in Shanghai public primary schools also meet the following challenges: (d) not having enough pre-service teaching programs, (e) facing high competition and a workload, and (f) building positive and stable relationships with parents/administrators. Considering by new qualified teachers’ internal motivation and the external challenge they meet, first-year teachers are overwhelmed in dealing with these imbalances.

Abstract:
Nanofluids — one simple product of the emerging world nanotechnology — where nanoparticles (nominally 1–100 nm in size) are mixed with conventional base fluids (water, oils, glycols, etc.). Nanofluids have seen enormous growth in popularity since they were proposed by Choi in 1995 [1]. In the year 2010 alone there were nearly 500 research articles where the term nanofluid was used in the title, showing rapid growth from 2000 (12) and 2005 (78). Much of the first decade of nanofluid research was focused on measuring and modeling fundamental thermophysical properties of nanofluids (thermal conductivity, density, viscosity, convection coefficients). Recent research, however, has started to highlight how nanofluids might perform in a wide variety of other applications. These applications range from their use in nanomedicine [2] to their use as solar energy harvesting media [3]. By analyzing the available body of research to date, this article presents trends of where nanofluid research is headed and suggests which applications may benefit the most from employing nanofluids. Overall, this review summarizes the novel applications and uses of nanofluids while setting the stage for future nanofluid use in industry.

Duarte, Joana, Jacqueline Castelo Branco, Fernanda Rodrigues, and J. Santos Baptista. "Short review on occupational noise exposure in the extractive industry and similar works." In 4th Symposium on Occupational Safety and Health. FEUP, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.24840/978-972-752-279-8_0015-0020.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Occupational noise is still a matter within the industrial practice with nefarious consequences on the worker’s health. Pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular problems, disturbances in sleep, fatigue, and, in the worst-case scenarios, hearing loss (this one with a permanent character) are some of the most common adverse effects reported in the literature. This issue covers itself in even more significant concern when analysing the mining industry context. Almost every operation works as a potential noise source, not only for the workers but also for the surrounding populations. Objective: To identify the exposure setting to occupational noise in the extractive industry and similar works (i.e. earthworks), particularly related to tasks and equipment. Methodology: The Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) was used as a guideline to help conduct the research and report of this work. The most relevant keywords were selected and later combined in the selected databases and multidisciplinary academic journals in the first phase. After, the articles were filtered with a set of exclusion criteria, to know: 1) Publication year, 2) Document type, 3) Source type, and 4) Language. The subsequent stage was to determine, within the remaining articles, the pertinence of each study and its later inclusion in the study. Each set of data was then classified according to the measurement context, and the results were analysed. Results and discussion: In the records’ identification phase, a total of 1148 papers were recovered. By applying the previously mentioned exclusion criteria, 547 were removed related to publication year, 146 due to document type, 12 related to source type and 25 because of language. Additionally, 360 records were excluded because were not in accordance with the proposed objective, 25 were duplicate articles, and 7 had no full-text available. From the last analysis, 11 more papers were excluded, which lead to a final result of 15 included studies. According to theoccupational noise measurements set, the records were divided into four categories: activity, equipment, job category, and working area. Different equipment was associated with high noise levels: crusher –between 85.6 and 104 dB, trucks and bulldozes –above 100 dB, and shovel –103 dB, whereas the only analysed activity was blasting, where studies concluded that increasing distance leads to lower noise measurement values. Conclusions: Considering this research, although it was possible to identify the tasks and equipment usually associated with occupational noise in the extractive industry, a lot of work still needs to be done, especially data analysis. However, this research serves as a starting point for future study.
