Advanced statistical approaches have been applied to determine the temporal scaling-invariance laws in annual mean yields registered in Mexico during the period 1897–1999. When the maize, bean, wheat and rice series are treated as self-affine profiles through power spectrum analysis, the temporal fluctuation f-β is detected in each case for time scales of 2 to 103 years. β values (p < 0.0001) of -1.84 ± 0.15, -1.71 ± 0.218, -1.62 ± 0.194 and -1.7 ± 0.139 for maize, bean, wheat and rice profiles, respectively, suggest that short-term variation is important and are influencing the dynamic evo

The analyses of the yearly misclosures revealed a temporal linear systematic error of 0.08 ± 0.02 mm/year, which is not explained by the budget components. With yearly advances in CFD techniques and methodologies, and the increased capacity and capabilities of computer CPU, GPU, and information storage, CFD has become a powerful design tool. However, despite its vast strengths, a CFD analysis is still based on the sound development of the 1D mean-line analysis methodology. This paper (part 1 of 2) describes an off-design axial compressor mean-line code, tested in a specialized engineering software for the development and analysis of a whole gas turbine engine, and the various tuning factors used to obtain an off-design performance match. Abstract Subsurface pumps and production tubulars are one of the important means for the production of crude oil from the subsurface to the surface installation in mature oil and gas fields. The health of downhole pumps and tubulars is severely endangered by the electrochemical deterioration, which will be discussed in the context of the working environment. The extent of damage caused to sucker rods traversing down to the pump for Rod Pump wells is discussed. A self-improved corrosion management process is brought out by briefly discussing inspection, monitoring, and mitigation methods. The c

It is a well-known fact that long-term time series of wind and wave data are modelled as nonstationary stochastic processes with yearly periodic mean value and standard deviation (periodically correlated or cyclostationary stochastic processes). Using this model, the initial nonstationary series are decomposed to a seasonal (periodic) mean value m(t) and a residual time series W(t) multiplied by a seasonal (periodic) standard deviation s(t), of the form Y(t) = m(t) + s(t)W(t). The periodic components m(t) and s(t) are estimated using mean monthly values, and the residual time series W(t) is ex

In the present work, a nonstationary stochastic model, which is suitable for the analysis and simulation of multivariate time series of wind and wave data, is being presented and validated. This model belongs to the class of periodically correlated stochastic processes with yearly periodic mean value and standard deviation (periodically correlated or cyclostationary stochastic process). First, the time series is appropriately transformed to become Gaussian using the Box-Cox transformation. Then, the series is decomposed, using an appropriate seasonal standardization procedure, to a periodic (d

This study explored spatial patterns of overflights at Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA). Overflights were analyzed from February 5th, 2020 to January 9th, 2023 (975 days of data; 95 days of missing data) using Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data. The first phase of analysis focused on all overflights and found a high concentration of overflights above GRCA and definitive travel patterns across the park. The second phase of analysis focused on low-level overflights that fly below 10,000 ft mean sea level (MSL) and fly within 10-miles of the GRCA boundary. Phase 2 figures di

Biogas solutions in the Nordics is undergoing rapid developments and the demand for biogas is ever increasing because of the Russian war on Ukraine and the transition to fossil free industry and transportation. Furthermore, with the introduction of several multi-national companies into the biogas sector in the Nordics and with more and more biomethane being traded across national borders, it becomes increasingly important to view biogas solutions in the Nordics as a whole and to go beyond the confines of each individual nation. Since the transition and the current energy crisis require a quick

River ecosystems are highly dependent on and responsive to hydrologic variability over multiple time scales (e.g., hours, months, years). Fluctuating river flows present a key challenge to river managers, who must weigh competing demands for freshwater. Environmental flow recommendations and regulations seek to provide management targets balancing socio-economic outcomes with maintenance of ecological integrity. Often, flow management targets are based on average river conditions over temporal windows such as days, months, or years. Here, three case studies of hydrologic variability are presen

What does governance look like ‘from below’ – from the perspectives of poor and marginalised households? How do patterns of conflict affect that? These were the questions at the heart of the Governance at the Margins research project. Over three years from 2017-2020 we worked to explore this through in-depth study in conflict-affected areas of Mozambique, Myanmar, and Pakistan. Our research teams interviewed the same people regularly over that time, finding out how they resolved problems and interacted with authorities. In this paper we connect what we found to the realities and complexities o

In a real-world data set there is always the possibility, rather high in our opinion, that different features may have different degrees of relevance. Most machine learning algorithms deal with this fact by either selecting or deselecting features in the data preprocessing phase. However, we maintain that even among relevant features there may be different degrees of relevance, and this should be taken into account during the clustering process. With over 50 years of history, K-Means is arguably the most popular partitional clustering algorithm there is. The first K-Means based clustering algo
