Abstract:
A. B. Yehoshua's growing eminence as one of Israel's foremost literary artists has been attended by his emergence as one of the more powerful voices of the secular Zionist left. A highly self-aware writer, Yehoshua has been scrupulously deliberate in separating the intellectual pragmatism of his political writing from the imaginative structures and aesthetic integrity of his literary works. But the generic distinction between polemical essay and imaginative fiction does not preclude overlapping areas of concern as well as a common basis of values and beliefs. Consequently, Yehoshua's essays often prove to be useful means of enhancing the understanding of his fictional works.

Resumo: Este artigo analisa os contos “O caminho do vento” e o “O nômade e a víbora”, publicados por Amos Oz em 1965, e o conto “O casamento de Gália”, publicado por Avraham B. Yehoshua em 1970, à luz de alguns aspectos teóricos postulados por Walter Benjamin como “alegoria”, “narrativa”, “obra épica”, entre outros. Os três textos surgem no Brasil na coletânea O novo conto israelense (1978), organizado por Rifka Berezin. Nas narrativas é possível vislumbrar algumas imagens surrealistas e expressionistas, bem como um sentido de personagem moderno que demonstra a crise do homem no século XX, tal como proposto por Benjamin. Como isso acontece em um só texto? As reflexões sobre os contos de Oz e de Yehoshua, lidos à luz de Walter Benjamin e de suas proposições sobre a vanguarda europeia, se revelam apropriadas, assim, para seavaliar essas e outras questões presentes nas narrativas.Palavras-chave: Amos Oz; Avraham B. Yehoshua; Walter Benjamin.Abstract: This article examines the short stories “The way of the wind” and “Nomad and viper”, published by Amos Oz in 1965, and the short story “Gallia’s wedding”, published by Avraham B. Yehoshua in 1970, in the light of some theoretical aspects postulated by Walter Benjamin as “allegory”, “narrative”, “epic work”, among others. The three texts appeared in Brazil in O novo conto israelense (1978), organized by Rifka Berezin. The narratives show some surrealist and expressionist images, as well as a sense of modern character that demonstrates the crisis of man in the 20th century, as proposed by Benjamin.How does it happen in a single text? The reflections on the tales of Oz and Yehoshua, read in the light of Benjamin’s propositions on the European vanguard, are appropriate, therefore, to evaluate these and other issues present in the narrative.Keywords: Amos Oz; Avraham B. Abstract:
O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal examinar como se dá a recriação ficcional da trajetória sefardita na modernidade, através do âmbito do Mar Mediterrâneo e de Israel, no romance O Sr. Máni, de A. B. Yehoshua. Para tanto, foi dividido em cinco capítulos: I: apresenta alguns dados biográficos de A. B. Yehoshua, examina as relações do romance O Sr. Máni com o restante de sua obra e biografia, analisa suas inovações formais e temáticas, descreve sua fortuna crítica. II: examina os principais elementos da narrativa do romance estudado, subordinados a uma concepção de historiografia crítica, aquela que em grande medida foge da tradição historiográfica da descrição e análise de grandes fatos para centrar a atenção em como os mesmos influem na vida do indivíduo. III e IV: analisam a primeira e a quarta conversas do romance, com algumas referências à terceira, buscando estabelecer qual o papel desempenhado pela ideologia sionista na formação da identidade judaico-israelense; tendo como momentos privilegiados seu declínio e sua origem. Trata da natureza específica da crise identitária sabra e das relações inter-étnicas no seio dessa sociedade, que possivelmente estariam, a par do declínio da ideologia política, na raiz desta mesma crise. V: estuda a segunda conversa do romance, pontuada de referências à quinta, buscando estabelecer qual a visão que se pode extrair do romance sobre as influência do Holocausto e do judaísmo na construção de uma identidade étnica em Israel. Os pressupostos teóricos que dão suporte a esta análise são, basicamente, a visão nazista sobre os judeus e a reação destes a tal visão e as relações entre os judeus e outras etnias no período do Velho Ishuv. CONCLUSÃO: trata alegoricamente os temas do suicídio, da orfandade, da bastardia e outros recorrentes no romance, no sentido de que podem refletir posicionamentos do autor sobre o devenir histórico e a estrutura da atual sociedade israelense e de sua crise de identidade.<br>This work has the major purpose of investigating how the fictional recriation of the sephardic trajectory in modernity along the region of the Mediterranean Sea and Israel, in the novel Mr Mani, by A. B. Yehoshua, takes place. To do so, it has been divided into five chapters: Chapter I presents some A. B. Yehoshua’s biographic data, examines the relations of the novel Mr. Mani to the author’s previous literary work and his biography, analyzes its formal and thematic innovations, describes its critical reviews. Chapter II examines the structural narrative major components of the romance surveyed, under a critical historiography conception, one which, to a great extent, deviates from the historiographic tradition of describing and analyzing history great moments in order to focus attention on the ways they influence individual’s life. Chapters III and IV analyze the first and the fourth chapters of the novel, together with some references to the third one, attempting to establish the role played by Zionist ideology in creating a Jewish-Israeli identity; with its decline and origin as the most representative moments. It deals with the specific nature of Israeli identitarian crisis and the inter-ethnic relations in the midst of this society, which could possibly be, together with the decline of the political ideology, in the roots of this crisis . Chapter V studies the second chapter of the novel, together with some references to the fifth one, trying to determine which point of view one could possibly infer from the novel about Holocaust and Judaism influences in the creation of an ethnic identity in Israel. The theory that supports these analyses are, basically, the nazi view about Jews and the reactions of the formers to such view and the relations between Jews and other ethnic groups in Old Ishuv period. CONCLUSION treats allegorically some themes, such as suicide, bastardy, orphanhood and others, as they may reflect the author’s stands about the historical trajectory and the social structure of Israeli society and its identity crisis.

Le sujet de cette thèse est l’identité israélienne et ses rapports avec la ville de Jérusalem. La candidate a essayé d’esquisser les traits du problème à travers la lecture et l’analyse du roman L’agent secret de sa majesté de D. Shahar et sur l’œuvre de A. B. Yehoshua, notamment Monsieur Mani. La thèse a été organisée en trois chapitres, auxquels il faut ajouter l’introduction et la conclusion. Dans l’introduction la candidate a porté son attention sur l’approche méthodologique à donner à sa recherche. Le premier chapitre est consacré à la représentation de Jérusalem dans la mémoire collective juive. La ville est vue en tant que ville sacrée, et donc espace sacré, plongé dans le temps sacré, mais elle est aussi une ville sainte, qui se caractérise pour une sainteté morale à achever dans le temps historique. Dans le deuxième chapitre la candidate focalise son attention sur l’aventure du héros dans la Jérusalem de Shahar. La ville est plongée dans le temps mythique de la création, riche de potentialités et dans le temps mythique paradisiaque de l’enfance à l’abri des tensions du temps historique. Le troisième chapitre est consacré à l’aventure du héros dans la Jérusalem de Yehoshua. La candidate a mis en évidence le rapport problématique entre lui et sa ville natale. Son personnage typique doit subir toutes les pressions du temps historique, et il en est souvent écrasé. Jérusalem est plongée dans le temps mythique de l’apocalyptique. Dans la conclusion la candidate met en évidence le fait qu’on ne pourrait pas concevoir les romans de Shahar et Yehoshua sans les textes de la tradition juive et donc sans la contribution du passé collectif du peuple juif<br>The subject of this thesis is the Israeli identity and its relationship with the city of Jerusalem. The candidate tried to sketch the features of the research through a reading and an analysis of the novel The Secret Agent of His Majesty of D. Shahar, and on the works of A. B. Yehoshua, especially Mr. Mani. The thesis has been organized in three chapters, to which must be added the introduction and the conclusion. The first chapter is devoted to the representation of Jerusalem in Jewish collective memory. The city is seen as a sacred city, and therefore sacred space, immersed in the sacred time, but it is also a holy city that is characterized by a moral holiness to be achieved in the historical time. In the second chapter, the candidate focuses its attention on the hero's adventure in the Jerusalem of Shahar. The city is immersed in the mythical time of creation, rich in potetialities and in the mythical paradise of childhood time sheltered from the tensions of historical time. The third chapter is dedicated to the adventure of the hero in the Jerusalem of Yehoshua. The candidate has highlighted the problematic relationship between him and his hometown. Yehoshua’s typical character must undergo all the pressures of historical time, and it is often crushed by them. Jerusalem is immersed in the mythic, apocalyptic time. In the conclusion the candidate highlights the fact that we could not conceive the novels of both Shahar and Yehoshua without the texts of the Jewish tradition and therefore without the contribution of the collective past of the Jewish people

La figure de l'intellectuel juif témoigne d'un phénomène socioculturel qui a émergé en Europe au tournant du XXe siècle. Doubrovsky, Roth et Yehoshua, mettent en scène dans leurs œuvres des héros, intellectuels et universitaires juifs, dont le modèle de personnage répond à l'environnement socioculturel dans lequel ils vivent. Dans Le Livre brisé de Doubrovsky, le genre autofictionnel confond entre l'auteur, le narrateur et le personnage dans un récit qui laisse paraître la douleur d'un homme traumatisé depuis l'Occupation. Dans The Human Stain de Roth, le héros, Coleman Silk est un imposteur, un professeur de Lettres Classiques qui a renié ses origines noires afin d'endosser le costume d'un intellectuel juif. En positionnant le phénomène de \&amp;political correctness au centre de l'intrigue de The Human Stain, Roth soulève le renversement théorique qui s'est opéré aux États-Unis à la fin des années 1980 lorsque des approches philosophiques françaises visant la liberté de l'expression, ont été transformées dans les universités américaines en système de surveillance du langage. Dans La Mariée libérée, Yehoshua crée le personnage de Yohanan Rivline, orientaliste à l'Université de Haïfa qui tente de découvrir l'origine du terrorisme en Algérie. Par le biais de cette recherche universitaire, il se rapproche de son étudiante arabe-israélienne Samaher et entame un voyage dans l'espace et l'inconscient de l'Autre. L'analyse des œuvres permet de distinguer les différentes réalités sociales qui influent la communauté juive en Diaspora et en Israël. Ainsi, l'intellectuel juif est appelé à naître, comme le résultat d'un processus historico-culturel qui est régi par la société<br>The emergence of the figure of the Jewish intellectual in Europe at the end of the nineteenth century illustrates a sociocultural phenomenon of that period. Doubrovsky, Roth and Yehoshua choose heroes for their novels who are Jewish intellectuals and university professors, based on models specific to their particular sociocultural environment. In The Broken Book by Doubrovsky, the autobiographical gender merges author, narrator and character in a story that presents the pain of a man traumatized by the experience of the German Occupation of France. In The Human Stain, the hero, Coleman Silk, is an impersonator, a professor of Classics at Athena University who hid his Afro-American origins in order to put on the costume of a Jewish intellectual. By placing the phenomenon of political correctness at the center of the plot of The Human Stain, Roth highlights the theoretical reversal that occurred at the end of the eighties when American universities transformed French post structuralism, which had originally aimed for liberty of expression, into i System of language surveillance. In The Liberated Bride, Yehoshua creates the character of Yohanan Rivline, orientalist at Haifa University, who tries to discover the origins of Algerian terrorism. By means of his academic research, he gets closer to his Arab Israeli student, Samaher, undertaking a journey in the territory, and in particular the unconscious, of the Other. The analysis of these novels permits one to distinguish the different social realities that influence the Jewish community in the Diaspora and in Israel. Whence the birth of the Jewish intellectual, a direct result of historical and cultural processes taking place in society

Abstract:
This study politicizes the mixed relationship in Israeli-Palestinian literature. I examine Arab-Jewish and interethnic Jewish intimacy in works by Palestinian national poet Mahmoud Darwish, canonical Israeli novelist A. B. Yehoshua, select anthologized Anglophone and translated Palestinian and Israeli poetry, and Israeli feminist writer Orly Castel-Bloom. I also examine the material cultural discourses issuing from Israel’s textile industry, in which Arabs and Jews interact. Drawing from the methodology of twentieth-century Brazilian miscegenation theorist Gilberto Freyre, I argue that mixed intimacies in the Israeli-Palestinian imaginary represent a desire to restructure a hegemonic public sphere in the same way Freyre’s Brazilian mestizo was meant to rhetorically undermine what he deemed a Western cult of uniformity. This project constitutes a threefold contribution. I offer one of the few postcolonial perspectives on Israeli literature, as it remains underrepresented in the field in comparison to its Palestinian counterparts. I also present the first sustained critique of the hetero relationship and the figure of the hybrid in Israeli-Palestinian literature, especially as I focus on its representation for political options rather than its aesthetic intrigue. Finally, I reexamine and apply Gilberto Freyre in a way that excavates him from critical interment and advocates for his global relevance.
