Baybakova, Larisa. In search of a modern concept of US foreign policy of the late XIX-early XX century. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1071748.

Abstract:
The monograph of the Russian American historian is devoted to a number of conceptual problems of US foreign policy in the period of early globalization (late XIX-early XX century). The significance of the socio-economic factor is reinterpreted from the standpoint of modern theory and methodology; the role of the ideology used by the political elite to justify American expansion is traced. New interpretations of the causes and consequences of the Spanish-American war of 1898 are given: for the first time, the place of the "yellow" press in inciting anti-Spanish sentiment among ordinary Americans is shown in detail as one of the first manifestations of successful manipulation of public opinion; the level of combat capability of the American army, which achieved victory over a weaker enemy, but was unprepared to conduct an armed struggle for achieving geopolitical interests with leading European powers, is critically assessed. The archival material, first introduced into scientific circulation, traces the mediation activities of President Roosevelt As the first successful experience in the peaceful settlement of regional conflicts, and also shows the search by top officials for a new world order under the auspices of the United States, with an emphasis on the use of the principles of international arbitration. It is addressed to researchers, teachers, and students interested in the history of the United States.

Abstract:
This article analyzes London’s work as a war correspondent during the early phase of the Russo-Japanese War as something other than simply an account of his experiences as a Western correspondent. The chapter argues that London’s war writing attempts to meta-discursively problematize many of the typical dimensions of war correspondence as it was practiced and represented in the “yellow press” at the close of the nineteenth century. Whereas other war correspondents often attempted to reify various similar ideas concerning war and the role of the correspondent through a writing practice that habituates an overall displacement of its discursive contingencies, London works to foreground such things in much of his Russo-Japanese War correspondence.

Abstract:
Fed up with the commercial and moral restrictions of the mainstream press of the late Victorian era, the diverse avant-garde groups of authors and artists of the Aesthetic Movement developed a new genre of periodicals in which to propagate their principles and circulate their work. Such periodicals are known as ‘little magazines’ for their small-scale production and their circulation among limited audiences, and during the late Victorian period they were often conceptualized as integrated design project or ‘Total Works of Art’ in order to visually and materially represent the ideals of their producers. Little magazines like the Pre-Raphaelite Germ, the Arts & Crafts Hobby Horse and the Decadent Yellow Book launched the careers of innovative authors and artists and provided a site for debate between minor contributors and visiting grandees from Matthew Arnold to Oscar Wilde. This book offers detailed discussions of the background to thirteen little magazines of the Victorian Fin de Siècle, situating these within the periodical press of their day and providing interpretations of representative content items. In doing so, it outlines the earliest history of this enduring publication genre, and of the Aesthetic Movement that developed along with it.

Abstract:
This chapter examines a seeming contradiction in post-Soviet Russian popular musics: the existence of widespread homophobia and the relatively large number of popular music performers whose sexual orientation has been questioned, both by those in the general public and the (yellow) press. Focusing on the work of three male performers—singers Boris Moiseev, Valerii Leont'ev, and Andrei Danilko (who assumes the drag persona Verka Serdiuchka)—the chapter analyzes the ways in which certain texts of theirs may be read as suggesting male–male sexuality. To situate historically and corporeally, and help explain, this contemporary efflorescence of relatively visible/audible homosexuality, the chapter considers the phenomenon of the phantom limb. More specifically, it explores how homosexuality, through its gendered connections to disease and infection, is viewed as a danger. Finally, it discusses the persistence of stereotypical gender roles in the post-Soviet era, and particularly the ways that masculinity is linked to the male and femininity to the female.
