Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates the question of Chinese indirection as a result of the use of modality expressions, which is conventionally believed to be the hallmark of Chinese rhetoric (e.g. Young, 1994; Bond, 1991; Powers and Gong, 1994). The present research compares and contrasts the degree of assertiveness as reflected in the patterns of modality in two corpora of expert Chinese and English argumentative writing on the same controversial subject. Corpus evidence shows that contrary to expectations, the Chinese writers are significantly more assertive than the English in arguing their case. The frequency of use and distribution patterns of intensifiers present both quantitative and qualitative evidence for the rhetorical differences, which may be accounted for culturally.

Abstract:
The Vendée experienced a boom in the sardine industry as early as the late 19th century due to the invention of canning. The advent of canning led Nantes industrialists to open canneries in the four main Vendée harbours. Alongside this economic development, social movements appeared, as fishermen and cannery workers, initially opposed industrialization. Fishermen and canners were regularly confronted with two restrictive factors : the contingency of the presence of sardines, as well as the conflicts which froze the sector. The emergence of foreign competition woke up the spirits which were mired in internal conflicts. However, faced with a lack of responsiveness and overconfidence in French expertise which manufacturers charged dearly, Spanish and Moroccan sardines invaded the market. Canneries had to close down one after the other, and seafarers turned to other fisheries.Only one sardine cannery survived the sardine crisis in Vendée. It is located in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, which has become the Vendée capital of sardines thanks to the first wild fish to obtain a red label in 2000. Based on traditional catching techniques, sardine fishing in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie has been listed in the inventory of intangible cultural heritage in France since 2018. Through the historical study of the choices which have guided the fishermen, the fishmongers, the canners and factory workers, we will shed light on the interactions of the various participants who have made the Vendée sardine industry what it is today

Abstract:
As the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) collapsed, two outstanding novels were authored, Supplement to the Journey to the West (Hsi-yu Pu) and Prayer Mat of Flesh (Jou P'u T'uan). Although modern critics have studied these two works, important aspects of each novel have been overlooked. Therefore, this study explores three elements of Jou P'u T'uan: the novel as a picaresque novel, the hero's character consistency, and the book's morality. Also examined are the Ch'an Buddhist aspects present in Hsi-yu Pu. Information on the authors, editions, and controversies of these novels has also been presented. An initial chapter is provided discussing the historical and intellectual background. Finally, a comparative study of the two authors and their works has been undertaken to further understanding of both novels. Thus, it is hoped that this work has made a valuable contribution to the study of these two novels.

Abstract Let’s start with you. The audience for this work is you, a student in the social sciences. Many of the problems discussed in this book will probably be new to you, perhaps not entirely, but still. Yet, right from the beginning of your studies, you have been confronted with certain demands, regulations, and procedures, all driven by certain ethical considerations that you’re supposed to be aware of and adopt. You’re supposed to be trustworthy, reliable, honest, impartial, and objective if you want to call yourself a researcher. Ah yes, but how? It seems you’ve got some catching up to do.

In ASME 2012 31st International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2012-83370.

Abstract:
One of design criteria that have been used for the mooring system design for floating platforms in the oil and gas industry is the Ultimate Limit State (ULS). The 100-year level response in the mooring line should be applied for this ULS design check, which is ideally estimated by taking into account the dynamic mooring line tension in all sea state available in the operational site. This is called a full long-term response analysis using the all sea state approach. However, this approach is time consuming. Therefore, it is proposed to use the contour line method to estimate the 100-year response by primarily studying the short term response for the most unfavorable sea states along the 100-year environmental contour line. Experiences in the oil and gas industry confirmed that the method could give good prediction if the response at higher percentile than the median is used. In this paper, the mooring system of a two-body wave energy converter (WEC) is considered. Since this system involves interaction between two bodies, the estimation of the ULS level response by using the all sea state approach will be even more time consuming. Therefore, the application of the contour line method for this case will certainly be beneficial. However, its feasibility for a WEC case needs to be documented first. In the present paper, the ULS level response in the mooring tension that is predicted by the contour line method is compared with that estimated by taking into account all sea states. It is achieved by performing the coupled time domain mooring analyses using SIMO/Riflex for six cases with different mooring configurations and connections between two bodies. An axi-symmetric Wavebob-type WEC is chosen as the object of investigation and the Yeu site in France is assumed to be the operational site of the WEC. Hydrodynamic loads including 2nd order forces are determined using WAMIT. Finally, the applicability of the contour line method to predict the ULS level mooring tension for a two-body WEC is assessed and shown to yield accurate results with proper choice of percentile level for the extreme response.
