Abstract:
Abstract In the wake of the Cultural Revolution (1966–76) and with China's new “Open Door” policy towards Western culture and Western new music, we have witnessed the exuberant growth of a new generation of Chinese composers. Tan Dun, Chen Yi and Bright Sheng have expressed in various ways their indebtedness to the heritage of Béla Bartók's music. Chen Yi, a fellow student of Tan Dun during her time at Central Conservatory of Music and Columbia University, recalled studying all of Bartók's six string quartets in the composition classes. Bright Sheng also openly admits that his use of the “primitiveness and savageness” of folk elements is directly modelled on the music of Bartók. The dissemination of Bartók's music in China is signified by the extent to which the journals published by China's top two music conservatories — the Central Conservatory of Music and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music — focus on discussion of this repertoire. Frank Kouwenhoven's studies of contemporary Chinese composers also point out that Bartók's influence overshadows most other major composers from the West. In this paper the reception of Bartók's music by Chinese composers in the post-Cultural Revolution era will be explored with reference to the musical as well as socio-cultural factors that fostered the influence.

Abstract:
We examined the segmentation of wine tourists in Taiwan in relation to their cultural values and lifestyle, and conducted a cultural comparison of wine drinking values and lifestyle between the results of Western and Taiwanese studies. The results of factor analysis and a 2-step cluster analysis of 428 wine tourists at the Shin-Yi and Shu-Sheng wineries showed that wine tourists can be categorized into 3 groups: conservative, hedonistic, and reward seeking. Our findings may assist Taiwanese winery owners to utilize marketing strategies that consider the lifestyle and cultural values of wine tourists, so that the appeal of the wines and wineries will be increased.

Abstract:
There is considered the issue of migration as a criterion of creativity of Chinese composers on the way to understanding a new stylistic identity. It is stated that in the case of Chinese composers who emigrated to America, the integration of their compositional experience into a different cultural space coincided with the period of renewal of Western musical language on the rowing waves of interest of European and American musical communities in Eastern cultural traditions. It is noted that the process of adaptation of Western listeners to the unusual musical language of Chinese composers was gradual. The figures of Tan Dun, Bright Sheng, Chen Yi, Zhou Long stand out, whose work is highly appreciated by modern musicians and listeners, which is confirmed by the concert programs of the world's leading music institutions. Among Chinese opera composers, the importance of Bright Sheng is emphasized, whose work combines the traditions of Western and Eastern cultures. Sheng managed to achieve a new stylistic identity, which allows us to call him a modern classic, in whose work classical values are disguised by cross-cultural combinations. The composer's experiences are conveyed through bilingual musical vocabulary, which reflects the result of Shen's cultural experience. The peculiarities of the opera "Dream of the Red Chamber" in terms of combining cultural symbols of east and west are analyzed. It is determined that oriental elements are manifested in the usage of additional traditional instruments (Peking Opera and Guqin percussion) while preserving their main function and rhythmic patterns, imitation of the sound of traditional Chinese wind instruments, introduction of quotations from folk songs, creation of variations on folk themes and more. Western traditions of opera writing are demonstrated through the appeal to the traditional number structure, the use of the method of monothematism and general tonal (but complicated by pentatonic constructions) harmonic writing.

Abstract:
Samchulkunbi-tang (SCT, Shen Zhu Jian pi tang in Chinese) is said to have been first recorded by Zheng Zhi Zhun Sheng during the Ming Dynasty in China. Records of SCT in Korea are known to have been cited in Donguibogam (Dong Yi Bao Jian in Chinese), Uibang Hwaltu (Yi Fang Huo Tao in Chinese), and Bang Yak Hapyeon (Fang Yao He Bian in China). Although SCT is widely used in treating chronic gastritis and gastric ulcers, the beneficial effect on renal vascular function is unknown. Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and endothelial dysfunction in humans and experimental animal models of arterial hypertension. In addition, kidney dysfunction is characterized by hypertension diseases. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of SCT on the vascular function in vitro (human umbilical cord endothelial cells, HUVECs) and in vivo (NG‐nitro‐L‐arginine methyl ester, L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats). The phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is closely related to nitric oxide (NO) production in HUVECs, and SCT in this study significantly increased these. For three weeks, hypertensive rat models were induced by L-NAME administration (40 mg/kg/day) with portable water. It was followed by oral administration with 100 and 200 mg/kg/day for two weeks to confirm the effectiveness of SCT. As a result, systolic blood pressure decreased in the SCT-treated groups, compared with that in the L-NAME-induced hypertensive group. SCT treatment restored vasorelaxation by stimulating acetylcholine and cGMP production in the thoracic aorta. In addition, SCT treatment decreased intima-media thickness, attenuated the reduction of eNOS expression, and increased endothelin-1 expression. It also increased p-Akt and p-eNOS expression in hypertensive rat aorta. Furthermore, regarding renal function parameters, SCT ameliorated urine osmolality, urine albumin level, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen levels. These results demonstrate that the oriental medicine SCT exerts potent vascular and renal protective effects on nitric oxide-deficient hypertensive rats and HUVECs

Abstract:
This essay theorizes the cultivation, suppression, and cooptation of new forms of Asian tropicality in the material and cultural productions of contemporary Singapore. Originating in Anglo-American imperial discourse of the eighteenth century, tropicality suggests the social construction of the “tropics” as a space in opposition to European and North American temperate environments. Reading the material space of the massive eco-development Gardens by the Bay and a series of contemporary literary texts by Kevin Kwan, Sandi Tan, and Ng Yi-Sheng, the author argues that these texts produce and reflect a contemporary cultural moment that is predicated on climate control and environmental engineering and haunted by the legacies of coloniality and developmental politics. The theorization of new Asian tropicalities provides a new critical lens with which to consider the relationships and connections between these constructions of nature and the material and cultural texts of twenty-first-century Singapore—a model of urban ecology that has an outsized influence on other Asian cities.

Abstract:
Feng Li of the Nanjing University of Science and Technology devised (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 8303) a combination of reagents that directly converted the alcohol 1 to the protected amine 2. Yong-Sheng Bao and Bao Zhaorigetu of Inner Mongolia Normal University selectively (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 6715) demethylated the tertiary amine 4, leading to the amide 5. Christopher W. Bielawski of the University of Texas developed (Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 13487) the reagent 7 for the conversion of an alcohol 6 to the bromide 8. The diiodo analogue of 7 also worked well. Ross Denton of the University of Nottingham showed (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 7340) that the reagent 10 efficiently mediated the Mitsunobu coupling of 9 with benzoic acid to give 11. The other product of the reaction, Ph₃ P=O, could be converted back to 10. Silas P. Cook of Indiana University established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 9521) conditions for the selective conversion of the bromide 12 to the boronate 13. Gwilherm Evano of the Université Libre de Bruxelles converted (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 11907) the alkenyl iodide 14 to the nitrile 15 using acetone cyanohydrin as the nitrile anion source. Seth B. Herzon of Yale University developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 7892) an improved Ru catalyst for the hydration of a terminal alkyne 16 to the aldehyde 17. Clément Mazet of the University of Geneva used (Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 10592) an Ir catalyst for the isomerization of a 2,2-disubstituted epoxide 18 to the aldehyde 19. Laurent El Kaïm of the Ecole Polytechnique, Laurence Grimaud of UMPC, and Roland Jacquot and Philippe Marion of Solvay showed (Synthesis 2014, 46, 1802) that in the presence of glutaronitrile 21, AlCl₃ was an effective catalyst for the conversion of an acid 20 to the nitrile 22. Yi-Si Feng and Hua-Jian Xu of the Hefei University of Technology found (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 4586) that a carboxylic acid 23 could be coupled with diphenyl disulfide under decarboxylating conditions, leading to the sulfide 24. Kenneth M. Doll of USDA Peoria observed (ACS Catal. 2014, 4, 3517) that decarboxylation of the unsaturated carboxylic acid 25 with a Ru catalyst delivered the alkene 26 as a mixture of regioisomers.

Abstract:
Canada, with its vast distances, was an early adopter of communications technologies. Starting in the 1970s, Canadian artists pursued the aesthetic strategies of correspondence art, video, telecommunications, and artist-run centers. Beginning with Bill Bartlett's Brechtian credo that real communication must be interactive, and noting Robert Filliou's influential concept of the “Eternal Network,” Hank Bull tells the story of a small group of artists who tested the potentials and implications of telecommunications art. He discusses radio, slowscan video, electronic mail and fax art, referring to specific projects produced for Ars Electronica (1983), Electra (Paris, 1983) and the Venice Biennale (1986). More recently, Shanghai Fax (1996), staged by Bull, with artists Shen Fan, Ding Yi, and Shi Yong, was one of the first international group exhibitions to take place in China since the revolution. In conclusion Bull emphasizes sympathetic listening in this new territory, where unfamiliar noises clash as new rhythms sound.
