Abstract:
This research investigated Chinese as second language (CSL) learner’s willingness to communicate (WTC) both inside and outside classroom in one of international schools, Hong Kong. The research objects are 170 Chinese Language B learners from an English School Foundation (ESF) international school. The main methodology adopted here was quantitative method. Classroom observations by researcher and self-reports by students were firstly done to collect background data, and then five scales were employed to do the main investigation, including a WTC Inside–the-classroom Scales (WTCIS), a WTC Outside-the-classroom Scale (WTCOS), a Language Anxiety Scale (LAS), a Motivation Scale (MS) and a Self-perceived Communicative Competence Scale (SCCS). The research objectives were to explore the general situation of CSL learners’ WTC, and the specific characteristics as well as possible differences of their WTC inside and outside the classroom; then to further examine the possible affecting variables from both background and psychological perspectives including gender, age, Chinese language proficiency, mother tongue, social support, personality and attitudes towards learning Chinese, which were regarded as background variables, and language anxiety, motivation and self-perceived communicative competence, which were regarded as psychological variables. After that, data was processed and analyzed by SPSS 19.0 for hypothesis verification. Finally, pedagogical implications on how to improve CSL learners’ WTC both inside and outside classroom were generalized from the study. The major findings showed that: (1) the general WTC of CSL learners from this school were slightly on the low side, between the Lower and Middle level, and the WTC inside the classroom was comparatively higher than outside of classroom. (2) On overall WTC, there was no significant difference between male and female students. But inside the classroom, girls were more likely to ask questions and pay more attention on language details than boys, while boy were more active to be the presenters and voice out in public. Outside the classroom, boys were more willing to communicate with strangers or chat online with friends in Chinese. (3) No significant WTC difference was found between Diploma Program (DP) and Middle Years Program (MYP), but DP CSL learners showed more willingness to make public speech, to be more of an inquirer in problems, and to do more generalization in speaking. (4) Among DP group, significant positive correlation was found between language proficiency and WTC, suggesting that the more proficient CSL learners showed higher WTC, and vice versa. (5) The more proficient group were more willing to speak Chinese voluntarily than the less proficient ones, implying that the more competent language learners are more likely to the take the initiative in communication. (6) CSL learners with more social supports to learn Chinese showed higher WTC, and a significant positive correlation was found here. (7) Students with Cantonese as mother tongue had higher WTC than their English as mothertougue counterparts, and this difference was more obviously outside of classroom. (8) Extroverted students showed significantly higher WTC inside of the classroom than the introverted. (9) Students who liked learning Chinese demonstrated higher WTC than those who didn’t. (10) Students’ motivation to learn Chinese and their SPCC were both on the high side, and both correlated positively on WTC, with motivation correlated more closely on outside WTC while SPCC more on inside WTC. Students showed slight lower anxiety level in speaking Chinese. Anxiety had significant negative correlation with WTC, and it mattered more inside than outside of classroom. No matter for WTC inside or outside, SPCC was the most predictive variable among the three.

Abstract:
In the Reform Proposals for the Education in Hong Kong published in 2000, it was clearly stated that the priotity of education in the 21st century should be ―to enable our students to enjoy learning, enhance their effectiveness in communication and develop their creativity and sense of commitment‖. This paper aims to respond to two of the aspects — the enhancement of effectiveness in communication and the development of students’ creativity. For years, schools have focused on promoting students’ creavity in reading and writing, but not in speaking. In fact, among the various language skills, ‘speaking’ is the skill students have to demonstrate the most in their daily interaction. Compared to reading and writing, the ability to express one‘s views verbally in a creative manner can give rise to more direct interaction, acting as a genuine reflection of a student’s wisdom, knowledge, capability and potential. It is also a lifelong skill that students can apply when they join the workforce in the future. It is therefore meaningful to place emphasis on cultivating students’ creativity in speaking. This research aims to explore the correlation between the Chinese oral proficiency and creative ability of senior secondary students in Hong Kong based on existing theories on the development of creativity and speaking. Target participants, recruited from two aided secondary schools of different abilities, receive training on speaking and creative thinking, and analysis is done adopting both the quantitative and qualitative approaches. Students of each school are first randomly divided into two groups — the experimental group and control group. Students of both groups are required to take a pre-test and a post-test, as well as complete a set of questionnaire in each session. Results obtained are compared and contrasted to gauge the changes in their oral proficiency and creative ability. In between the tests, the experiemental group receives seven experimental design lectures on News and Report, one of the elective modules of the NSS curriculum in Chinese Language Education, while the control group receives lectures on News and Report which reference on the samples from Education Bureau only, no experimental design lectures will be delivered. In the end, the three teachers involved in the study were interviewed, during which the teachers offered their observations on the change in the students’ learning behaviour and attitude. Based on the data collected from the administration of tests, questionnaires and interviews, the following conclusions are made: first, there is a correlation between oral proficiency and creative ability; second, students’ attitude and values have a direct impact on the effectiveness of the module; third, the Speaking and Creativity Assessment rubric used in the study proved to be successful in assessing the said abilities, enhancing learning effectiveness. Through the analysis of data collected, this research contributed to Chinese Language Education to some extent, especially in the teaching of oral proficiency and creativity. It opened up a new set of criteria for the assessment of creative speaking ability from different perspectives to ensure objectivity of results, offered diversified course materials that can effectively raise the standard of students’ speaking and critical thinking ability.

Abstract:
International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum is adopted by more and more international schools and direct-subsidy schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, more and more non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students choose to study Chinese Language as a second language in IB curriculum. However, the vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties when they learn Chinese. The Education Bureau has published ‘Consultation Paper on Developing a “Supplementary Guide to the Chinese Language Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students” ’ and points out those NCS students encounter difficulties in learning Chinese graphemes, tones, vocabulary, etc. These difficulties are related to morpheme. Many researchers have conducted to study on relationship between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. This dissertation aims to study on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students in Hong Kong. This is a quantitative research. Data collection includes two tests of the morphological awareness and lexical ability paper-pencil tests and one summative unit test of Chinese Language subject in a school. IB MYP students of two classes participated in this study and their morphological awareness and lexical ability were tested and analyzed by the statistical analysis software. The objectives of the study are: (1) Analysis on the types of lexicon errors of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (2) Analysis on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (3) Suggestions on developing of morphological awareness in learning Chinese Language as a second language. The results find that most of the lexicon errors were related to the tones and radical components of Chinese character, it is suggested to develop the homophone awareness and the orthographic awareness of Chinese character to reduce the lexicon errors. The morphological awareness of students has influence on student’s lexical ability. The homophone awareness has a closer relationship with lexical ability. The morphological awareness of the mental lexicon has an influence on the amount of mental lexicon and the ability of using lexicon. It is suggested to develop the morphological awareness of students in teaching Chinese as a second language to further study the relationship between the development of morphological awareness and mental lexicon in the future.

Chan, Yuen Cheung. "Quality evaluation and anti-chronic glomerulonephritis properties of a patent herbal drug yi-shen-hua-shi granule." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2020. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/825.

Full text
Abstract:
Yi-Shen-Hua-Shi (YSHS) granule is a Chinese patent drug for treating chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN). It was marketed in 2009. However, up to now, there is no report about the quality and pharmacological activities of this product. In this work,we evaluated the quality and anti-CGN effects of the drug. To evaluate the quality of the granule, a qualitative and quantitative HPLC-DAD analytical method was developed. For qualitative analysis, HPLC fingerprint of ten batches of YSHS granule was established. The fingerprints were analyzed using similarity evaluation, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal components analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) based on 15 characteristic fingerprint peaks. Similarity values of 10-batche samples were all above 0.960, indicating a stable quality. Minor differences were observed among batches by HCA and PCA. For quantification analysis, contents of six constituents in the granule were simultaneously measured. To establish the chemical profile of the granule, a HPLC-Q-TOF- MS/MS method was developed. A total of 105 peaks were detected using HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS in the granule, of which, 99 were tentatively identified as terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, phenols and other types of compounds, and 15 were further validated with reference substances. HPLC fingerprint chromatogram establishment, quantification analysis of 6 constituents and compound identification should improve the quality control of YSHS granule. To study the pharmacological activities of the granule, we investigated its anti-CGN effects and TGFβ signaling-related mechanism of action. A CGN rat model was established by injection of cationization-bovine serum albumin (C-BSA) for five weeks. After C-BSA injection, drugs were intragastrically administered to the rats once daily for four weeks. Clinical signs were recorded daily. Urine and serum biochemical parameters were analyzed using respective kits. Protein levels were examined by Western blotting. Pathological changes of renal tissues were evaluated using HE and Masson's trichrome staining. No significant differences in body weights and clinical signs were found among normal, model and drug treatment groups. Proteinuria; albuminuria; increased urine volume; elevated creatinine, urea nitrogen, triglyceride levels and total cholesterol in serum; decreased serum total protein and albumin; as well as renal pathological damages and fibrosis were observed in CGN model rats. YSHS granule ameliorated all the abnormal behavioral and biochemical changes in the model rats. Mechanistic investigations revealed that YSHS granule down-regulated proteins levels of TGFβ1, phospho-Smad2/3 (Thr 8) and Smad4 in rat renal tissues. These findings indicate that the drug has anti-CGN effects in rats, and inhibiting TGFβ signaling contributes to the underlying mechanisms. In summary, our chemical analytical studies will help in improving the quality control of YSHS granule. Our bioactivity and mechanistic studies provide a pharmacological basis for the clinical use of the granule in treating CGN.

Abstract:
In tracing the experience of Chinese Canadians in the 20th Century, we need to look further back into its history. Most people believe that the increasing number of immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China in the 1980s and 1990s played the most important roles in the social and economic changes during the latest decades of the 20th Century. The contribution of the Chinese Canadians settlement throughout the 20th Century should also be considered as it marks the beginning of the rise of their social status and identity in Canada. Although the Chinese Canadians earned their fame and status since the 1980s, they had been racially discriminated for more than a century. To probe into the situation, the social and political situations in the Chinese Canadian community will be meticulously analyzed and their contribution in difference aspects examined. In addition, other minority ethnic groups, such as the Japanese, Jewish and Indian, will be used as a comparison to demonstrate the change of policies towards the Chinese in Canada. In doing so, both English and Canadian Chinese newspapers will be used to illustrate the cultural difference between the “whites” and “non-whites”. To illustrate the changes, the 20th Century will be break into three parts. In most of the pre-Second World War period, the Chinese community was isolated from the mainstream community with their activities largely confined to Chinatowns in cities, such as Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto and so on. For the Chinese living in small townships, such as Prince Rupert, Richmond and so on, their daily life will also be examined. When Canada declared war on Japan on 7th December 1941, Canada became an ally of China during the war. A sentiment of acceptance of the Chinese in the mainstream society began to take shape. Some of the Chinese chose to contribute their efforts to Canada by joining the Canadian Armed Forces and went into battle alongside the White Canadians. After the Second World War, Canada adopted a new policy towards the minority ethnic groups and Chinese Canadians started to enjoy political equality. In May 1947, the Canadian Government repealed the Chinese Immigration Act. In 1967, after the liberalization of the Canadian immigration policy, the Chinese, once again, were allowed to immigrate freely to Canada as an individual. With granted full citizenship, the Chinese social and political status began to change. In 1957, Douglas Jung, a Canadian born Chinese, was elected a Member of the Parliament, which can be seen as the beginning of the Chinese involvement in the political arena of the Canadian community. Since then, Chinese Canadians were able to achieve equality in the society. Based on documentary accounts and oral history research, this thesis re-constructed the history of Canadian Chinese involvement in the 20th Century and the change of their identity and social status thereafter.

Summary The dissertation focused on the analysis on, with semiotic methods, how Yao Yi-wei employed the transformability of ideographic system to materialize his inner impetus for creation in a polysemous way, how he viewed his creation as “an artistic presentation of personal ideals of life”, and how his imagination towards Sublimity could be effectively expressed through the dramatic structure of “Antithesis of Human/Situation”. Furthermore, his creation practice also made reference to, from within, the impacts of the context of “contextual structure” and “social consciousness” that constructed his inner impetus and ideas for creation, from which the image of intelligentsia and artistic attitudes of his “self-definition” were analyzed. With such a method, the dissertation excavated the interrelationship among Yao’s structure of dramatic aesthetics, his practice of creation, and the mode of proliferation of the dramatist’s signs in different contexts, and it described the intertextuality of his approach to the values of life/aesthetics, contents of consciousness/society, and personal/historical interpretive system. The discourses were made from the following four levels: it started from the construction of ideographic system of dramatic texts (“Sun Fei Hu, the Snatcher of Wedding”, “Shen-Sheng”, and “Fu Ching-Chu”), to find out, layer by layer, the visages and thoughts, and employments of symbols and presentation of intentions. Then it further found out, through the intertexuality of his contextual structures, the experiential world and the attitudes and self-definitions he held. These four levels are listed as follows: 1. The possibility of signifying the dramatist’s inner ideals. 2. The logic for deciphering the dramatic actions and symbols. 3. The combination of power structures in the conflicts of wills. 4. The diverse discourses presented in contextual structures of dramatic forms. It is namely a multi-level deciphering of his dramatic texts, and with which, found out the self-consciousness projected in them by the dramatist and the diverse presentations in aesthetics, thinking, and contextual structures, etc. Furthermore, it found out how the dramatist, under the “political/aesthetic ideology” that he dwelt, defined and fought for the right for interpretation of his subjectivity through thinking and self-awareness, and proposed his imagination towards Sublimity in his artistic ideals. Key words: Yao Yi-wei; transformability of signs; imagination towards sublimity; power structure; national allegory.

Of all the 17 Chapters in YiLi, 12 of them have the Note after the Scripture. Zhu Xi changed the content in the book Yi-li-Jing-Zhuan-Tong-Jie, and Shi-Zuo Sheng did the similar thing in the book Yi-Li-Ji-Bian. So here comes the question: why they did this? How? Is it reasonable? Did they have any difference? What’s the influence? To solve the problem, I will compare the contents done by these two. YiLi is a very complicated book and related to many aspects in ancient society, in the meantime, my writing skills are still shallow, so I am not being capable to analyze all the contents in the book. As a result, I choose the ShiGuanLi / ShiHunLi/ ShiXiangJianLi to be analyzed.

In this thesis, I take the discourse of new Taiwan documentary as the subject of discussion, and review the Green Group’s Anti-DuPont Movement in Lukang, Wu Yi-Feng’s Moon Children, and Shen Ko-Shang’s Silent Delta and A Rolling Stone. By reviewing these crucial events of contemporary Taiwan documentary studies, I try to figure out how the discourse constructed, functioned and its blind-spot, and thus propose a new perspective. Chapter Two uses the Green Group’s Anti-DuPont Movement in Lukang as the main subject of discussion, and explores the logic of representation of Diceng (subaltern) on visual medium. By comparing the different version of Anti-DuPont Movement in Lukang, I want to indicate how the Green Group shaped subaltern. First, by editing the image of street demonstrations and protestors in, the abstract concept Diceng can incarnate itself in those image. Additionally, by replacing locality and local knowledge with universal discourse like science and human right, thus this film constructed Taiwaneseness. And I call this process “the discovery of subaltern”. Chapter Three uses Wu Yi-Feng’s Moon Children as the main subject of discussion, and focuses on ethical and aesthetic issue of new Taiwan documentary. By comparing two different attitude toward this work—taking realism as real, or taking realism as particular way of expression, I want to bring up problematics that had been ignored in previous discussion. First, how the normalization narrative suppresses the alterity of others. Additionally, when realism became the only means of re/presenting real, facing and shooting the pain of others is an inevitable consequence. Thus, I suggest that we should seek the aesthetics besides realism as a methodology, to reconcile enlightenment role with ethical issue of new Taiwan documentary. Chapter Four uses Shen Ko-Shang’s Silent Delta and A Rolling Stone as subjects of discussion, and argue that visuality is radical and necessary in contemporary Taiwan documentary. In Silent Delta, by suspending the definite meaning, Shen forces audience to interpret this work without clear information. Therefore, when audience try to interpret it, they have to take reality as external reference, thus recognize the alterity of these isles reflexively. Then in A Rolling Stone, by separating audio and visual, Shen tries to reconcile the conflict between documentary’s enlightenment role with ethical issue. Through aesthetics, these two works are both overcoming and dealing with problematics and ethical issue that the previous documentaries can’t do. In short, by reviewing these crucial events of new Taiwan documentary studies, this thesis points out the particularity of this discourse, and how it was constructed. Thus, the universality and superiority of this discourse can be deconstructed. Furthermore, by proposing a new perspective and framework, this thesis attempt to reboot and renew Taiwan documentary studies.

This thesis is based on the study of Shang Binghe Yi-ology and the divination research of the hexagrams of the Yi. It aims to explore the Shang Binghe Yi-ology and to understand the situation of the actual divination, especially the application of Shangs Yi-ology’s imaging rules of the hexagrams. To understand the applicability of Shangs Yi-ology, and to show that Shangs Yi-ology has its practical side in addition to its theory. The combination of both theory and practice is the biggest feature of Shangs Yi-ology. This feature is also the biggest division and difference comparing to other purely theoretical Yi-ology factions. This thesis is divided into nine chapters. The research of creation starts from myself, coming from my own life experiences, including sketching on the street, gazing at the people, receiving external information as well as hearing the intrinsic sound. The oppressed the time of growth, the frustration of feelings and the trouble of the relationships make me restless in the deep mind. The escape and self-block cause me to be lonely. The anger and depression deepen the gulf of the bitter. The experiences, combining the memories and feelings and forcing me to face my own intrinsic situation, always merge in my mind unintentionally. The creation becomes the only exit of my extremely restless condition. Through the way, I can dig out my heart which is closed in the dark black hole, reflecting my internal. The topic of this research is “me”. My works are taken as the objects of observation through the literature methodology. The academic theories are the foundation of my creation, according to the aspects of the “existence”, “symbol”, “subconscious” and “performance”. The process of the thinking of creation is that analysis description, works research, experiences reading, experiences narration, the connotation clarification. Through analyzing the works, the intrinsic mind can be understood precisely. My creations are divided into three series: “Gazing myself”, “Gazing the feelings of the family” and “Gazing the affections of lover”, attempting to shape my own image and to reflect my reality via my body, status and stories; meanwhile, presenting my desires without veiling and common viewpoints and weakening the characteristics of the feminine by the technique of shaping in order to free myself from the myth of the genders. Moreover, my own image and style can be constructed by discovering and communicating with myself continuously. The creations reveal the self-intrinsic reflection, the restless condition and the sense of the loneliness and sadness which are the fundamental keys of my creations. The development of life experiences changes my mind; furthermore, the contradiction and the diversity fill the process of the creations. Although the repression and the restless condition have not vanished during the period of the creations, gazing myself clarified the sorrowful and vague inside condition; finally the self-existence would be realized after all.
