We have developed a highly sensitive microbial analytical system, the Yakult Intestinal Flora-SCAN (YIF-SCAN), based on reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, to quantify the intestinal microbiota. We introduce a family [Formula: see text] of normal Tricomi domains Ωα,β, α &gt; 0 &gt; β, and we show that its elements are D-star-shaped with respect to the vector field D = -3x∂x- 2y∂yif and only if α ≥ 1/2. Provided that the underlying domain Ω belongs to [Formula: see text] for some α ≥ 1/2, we then establish L2estimates for the eigenfunctions corresponding to real eigenvalues of the Tricomi operator. In particular, our result highlights a dependency of these estimates on the values of α and β and the parabolic diameter of Ω.

The goal of the present work at the laboratory is the construction of a magnetostatic wave optical modulator. To accomplish said goal, material must be found that permits guided optical modes to propagate with low attenuation, possesses high Faraday rotation (to produce high diffraction efficiencies), and has a narrow ferrimagnetic linewidth to allow the magnetostatic waves to operate at high frequencies with little attenuation. Trivalent lanthanide doped LiYF4 (YLF) is commonly grown by Czochralski pulling [1, 2]. Previous work using the Bridgman technique [3] produced single crystals, however, without control of orientation. Oriented YLF single crystals were recently obtained by a vertical gradient freezing technique based on seeded growth [4]. Both pure YLF and LiY1-xLnxF4 with Ln = Er (0.01 ≤ × ≤ 0.20), Pr (x = 0.01) and Nd (0.01 ≤ × ≤ 0.03) were grown under N2 atmosphere in a glassy carbon crucible. Usable crystal lengths up to more than 50 mm at 15 mm diameter were achieved. Nd and Er doped rods showed IR laser
