Abstract:
Abstract China has traditionally placed tremendous importance on agricultural research. Meanwhile, in recent years, sustainable agriculture has been increasingly highlighted in both policy agenda and the capital market. However, while terms like environmental friendliness, low carbon, organic and green agriculture have become buzzwords in the media, few meaningful discussions have been raised to examine the relationship between science and technology (S&T) development and sustainable agriculture. What's more, some environmentalists stress that sustainable agriculture should abandon modern agriculture's heavy reliance on science and industrialization, making the link between agricultural S&T and sustainable agriculture seem problematic. What is the truth? If S&T are to play an important role in advancing sustainable agriculture, what is the current status of the field? What factors have caused the sustainable development of agriculture in China? At an online forum organized by the National Science Review (NSR), Hepeng Jia, commissioned by NSR executive editor-in-chief Mu-ming Poo, asked four scientists in the field to examine the dynamic relationship between sustainable agriculture and agricultural S&T in the Chinese context. Abstract:
Objectives. Little information is available regarding the use of Chinese herbal medicine to treat mastitis. This study evaluated the prescription patterns of Chinese herbal medicine products in women with mastitis in Taiwan. Design. This is a population-based cross-sectional study. Setting. 8,531 women aged 20–49 years, who received a diagnosis of mastitis between 2004 and 2013, were identified from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database in Taiwan. We collected data on demographic characteristics, including age, monthly insurance premium, and urbanization level. The ten most Chinese herbal medicines prescribed for mastitis were assessed, including frequency, percentage, average daily dose, and average duration of prescription. Main outcome measures. We analysed the ten most single Chinese herbs and Chinese herbal formulae prescribed for mastitis. Results. Overall, 437 (5.1%) women received Chinese herbal medicine to treat mastitis. Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker Gawl.; 22.3%), Pu Gong Yin (Taraxacum mongolicum Hand.-Mazz.; 7.8%), and Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaria hispanica (Mill.) Rauschert; 3.5%) were three of the most commonly prescribed single Chinese herbs for mastitis. Xian-Fang-Huo-Ming-Yin (18.2%), Jia-Wei-Xiao-Yao-San (9.1%), and Chai-Hu-Shu-Gan-San (8.4%) were three of the most commonly prescribed Chinese herbal formulae. Conclusion. Xian-Fang-Huo-Ming-Yin can clear heat, detoxify body, alleviate swelling, activate blood, and relieve pain. It was the most frequently prescribed Chinese herbal formula in patients with mastitis.

陳慧聲 and Wai-sing Chan. "A comparison of the Cantonese pronunciations recorded in Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian and Yueyin zhengdu zihui = "Guangzhou hua zheng yin zi dian" yu "Yue yin zheng du zi hui" Yue yu zhu yin bi jiao yan jiu." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/192954.

Full text
Abstract:
Cantonese is not only a lingua franca in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau but also a dialect that is widely used by overseas Chinese communities around the world. Being the most prestigious Yue dialect, Cantonese is definitely an important dialect that is worth investigating. In the past few decades, over a dozen dictionaries on Cantonese have been compiled. Among them, the Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian 《廣州話正音字典》and Yueyin zhengdu zihui 《粵音正讀字彙》are both widely used and thus influential standards on Cantonese. Despite their importance, systematic studies on the Cantonese pronunciations given in the two dictionaries are few and far between. The present thesis is the first attempt to study the subject. The present dissertation attempts to analyze the differences between the two dictionaries so that a comprehensive list of their differences can be obtained. The analysis is conducted with reference to the number of pronunciations given to each character; the order of listing the pronunciations; tone change; and the listing of commonly used pronunciations. The present thesis also tries to examine the differences between the two editions of Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian and among the three editions of Yueyin zhengdu zihui. Possible reasons for such differences would also be investigated. It is not surprising to find that many Chinese characters are given different pronunciations in the two dictionaries as the two dictionaries use two different approaches to determine the correct Cantonese pronunciations. The pronunciations recorded in the Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian are the Cantonese pronunciations commonly used in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, whilst those recorded in the Yueyin zhengdu zihui are mainly based on the fanqie(反切) recorded in the Guangyun《廣韻》and the Jiyun《集韻》, which were both published in Song Dynasty. Significant differences regarding the criteria of determining the correct Cantonese pronunciations are found in the 3 editions of the Yueyin zhengdu zihui. It is surprising that a tendency of giving more emphasis to the pronunciations commonly used is found in the 2nd and 3rd editions.

Abstract:
A new deposition alloying process using Micro-EDM was developed. Using the energy released by the electrical discharge, material from the tool electrode is melted and deposited over the work surface. When a rotating bi-metal tool electrode is fed towards the work surface, the alloying between its elements occurs during process. The obtained results of the alloying between nickel and iron are presented in the present paper, when the components of the bi-metal tool electrode are made of YNi-1 (nickel alloy used in TIG welding — JIS standard) and medium carbon steel (S45C — JIS standard). X-ray and EDS analysis have shown that the chemical composition of the obtained deposit can be controlled and is proportional to the cross sectional area of each element present in the bi-metal electrode. With this process, a material with the same composition of Invar was successfully deposited.

Abstract:
Liao Zhai zhi yi (Strange Stories from a Lonely Studio) and Yue Wei Cao Tang Bi Ji (The Notes of Yuewei Cottage), two renown Classical Chinese novels of the Qing Dynasty, contain many stories about foxes. The former contains more than 70 such stories and the latter contains more than 130. Foxes in these stories vary greatly in terms of their types. More importantly, a noticeable phenomenon in these stories is that, just like human beings, foxes’ dwellings can be identified as rural and urban, domestic and wild. In other words, foxes from different communities bear overt differences concerning their characters and behaviors. For example, Liao Zhai zhi yi is skilled in delineating rural foxes with pastoral temperament, who frequently escalate their emotion and lust. On the other hand, Yue Wei Cao Tang Bi Ji is adept in rendering urban foxes with intellectual men, who often show their nurturing and wisdom. And this phenomenon reveals the differing life experience, social statuses and cultural visions of the two authors. Concomitantly, it also betrays the different folklore sources utilized by the two authors.

Abstract:
Main purpose of this research is trying to understand food likeliness of Taiwan college students, and probe whether these food are healthy. Three survey steps are taken as: step 1, market survey for what kind of foods are selling around the campuses; step 2, questionnaire investigation for students food preference; step 3, analyzing whether these favorite foods are healthy or not. The result shows: major consideration for students food selection are “taste” and “price”; 63% of students are taking food or snacks late at night at least once a week. Top three most favorite foods are: Taiwanese fries (yan su ji), carbon grilled chicken and fried fish steaks. Quantities of these foods are small, prices are low, and easy access from roadside food stands. Problems of them are high calories, easy to accumulate free radical in human body, plus insanitary food processing environment. They are harmful to student health. We suggest Taiwan government take it seriously.

Wang, Ying, Jianmin Yang, Tao Peng, and Haining Lu. "Strake Design and VIM-Suppression Study of a Cell-Truss Spar." In ASME 2010 29th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2010-20225.

Full text
Abstract:
Along with the development of offshore technology, Spar platforms have been widely used in deep-sea oil and gas exploitation. Due to the deep draft cylinder hull piercing into the water, Spar platforms could be subjected to Vortex-Induced Motions (VIM) in certain current conditions. To mitigate VIM, helical strakes are used on the Spar hulls, and they have been proved to be effective. Cell-Truss Spar is a new concept of Spar platform which has recently been put forward by State Key Laboratory of Ocean Engineering (SKLOE) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It combines some good qualities of the Cell Spar and Truss Spar designs, aiming to bring in the lighter truss section and heave plate damping feature of the Truss Spar to obtain satisfactory heave motion performances, while reduce manufacture and installation difficulties by means of cell concept. Since the Cell-Truss Spar is a new design concept that has physical characteristics which are different from the existing Spars, the global motion performance should be carefully studied and verified. Researches about the VIM performance of the Cell-Truss Spar have been carried out recently (see Wang Ying et al, 2008, etc). Since it is still at the concept design stage, the Cell-Truss Spar configuration is considered without detail strake design in these studies. For the Cell-Truss Spar, which is still on concept design stage at the present time, the design and optimization of the helical strakes is very important to control the VIM response and improve the hydrodynamic performance. In this paper, strake design and VIM-Suppression Study of the Cell-Truss Spar is carried out. As a result of the unique characters on the hull, the outer surface of the Cell-Truss Spar does not form a regular cylinder. Hence, the strakes should be designed more carefully. In this study, four different configurations of strake groups are put forward and studied, and the one with the highest efficiency is chosen to be applied on the Cell-Truss Spar. The fluid field around the hard tank of the hull, the vortex disturbance near the strakes, and the forces acting on the hard tank with different strakes are simulated by CFD method, and the strake efficiency is assessed through model test combining with CFD computation. The optimized strake configuration is finally chosen, and the VIM performance of the strake-equipped Spar is studied.
