Abstract:

Cantonese is not only a lingua franca in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau but also a dialect that is widely used by overseas Chinese communities around the world. Being the most prestigious Yue dialect, Cantonese is definitely an important dialect that is worth investigating. In the past few decades, over a dozen dictionaries on Cantonese have been compiled. Among them, the Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian 《廣州話正音字典》and Yueyin zhengdu zihui 《粵音正讀字彙》are both widely used and thus influential standards on Cantonese. Despite their importance, systematic studies on the Cantonese pronunciations given in the two dictionaries are few and far between. The present thesis is the first attempt to study the subject. The present dissertation attempts to analyze the differences between the two dictionaries so that a comprehensive list of their differences can be obtained. The analysis is conducted with reference to the number of pronunciations given to each character; the order of listing the pronunciations; tone change; and the listing of commonly used pronunciations. The present thesis also tries to examine the differences between the two editions of Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian and among the three editions of Yueyin zhengdu zihui. Possible reasons for such differences would also be investigated. It is not surprising to find that many Chinese characters are given different pronunciations in the two dictionaries as the two dictionaries use two different approaches to determine the correct Cantonese pronunciations. The pronunciations recorded in the Guangzhouhua zhengyin zidian are the Cantonese pronunciations commonly used in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, whilst those recorded in the Yueyin zhengdu zihui are mainly based on the fanqie（反切） recorded in the Guangyun《廣韻》and the Jiyun《集韻》, which were both published in Song Dynasty. Significant differences regarding the criteria of determining the correct Cantonese pronunciations are found in the 3 editions of the Yueyin zhengdu zihui. It is surprising that a tendency of giving more emphasis to the pronunciations commonly used is found in the 2nd and 3rd editions.

本文主要探討了中文二語教師在跨文化教學中對教師權威的理解和態度。東西方文化的差異在教師權威方面的表現，是彼此對師生間權力距離的認同並不一樣，東方文化中，權力距離較大，教師更為權威；而西方文化則權力距離較小，學生擁有更多的自由。本研究採訪了香港某國際學校的9名中外二語教師，得出結論：中文二語教師還是重視尊師重道的傳統，但對於教師權威已有了與時俱進的理解，面對外國學生,師生互相協商、尊重，從而達到課堂的學習目標才是教師權威的真正意義。受訪者採取1）樹立嚴師形象、運用獎懲機制；2）從學生角度考慮，尊重、幫助學生；3）自我提升，贏得學生尊重的方式，來應對學生挑戰教師權威的行為。影響受訪者形成如上教師權威的理解和態度，并選擇用以上的方式應對學生挑戰教師權威行為的策略，因素为：成長環境和教學經驗；獎懲制度和職位的肯定；個人性格、師生關係；以及網絡時代的挑戰；教師需要通過不斷進修、學習來提升自我。本文通過分析跨文化教學中，中文教師的教師權威的理解和態度，應對策略和影響因素，引出思考和啓發：1）教師權威需要被重視和理論化；2）教師權威應在跨文化教學中因應學生的需要而轉變；3）區別對待中外學生的原因在于用不同的方法，達到公平、一視同仁的結果，希望學生的需要得到重視和照顧；4）學校教育與社會的關係意味著教師權威被理論化的重要性；5）當代教育學者應著手將教師權威理論化，從而也能使中文二語教師在跨文化教學中有據可循，重建教師權威。

Abstract:

Huai-Hua-Jin-Yin-Jiu, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula (SL) comprising Sophorae Flos and Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, was used for treating melanoma in ancient China. Our group has previously shown that an ethanolic extract of SL (SLE) possesses anti-melanoma effects, and that inhibiting STAT3 signaling contributes to the action mechanisms. STAT3 activation promotes the formation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment of melanoma. Regulation of the miR-let- 7/CCR7 pathway is a strategy for treating metastatic melanoma. Chrysoeriol is a flavonoid identified in SLE. The compound has anti-tumor properties, but there is no report about its effects on melanoma. The first aim of this study is to determine whether SLE inhibits melanoma progression by reprogramming tumor microenvironment; the second aim is to explore the involvement of miR-let-7a/f- CCR7 signaling in the anti-metastatic effects of SLE; and the third aim is to elucidate the anti-melanoma mode and mechanisms of action of chrysoeriol. Results showed that SLE suppresses melanoma growth and angiogenesis in mice. SLE inhibits STAT3 signaling, and alters immune cell compositions and molecules involved in STAT3 signaling in melanoma tissues. Cell co-culture experiments showed that SLE inhibits STAT3 signaling in melanoma cells and splenic lymphocytes. Over-activation of STAT3 in melanoma cells diminishes SLE's effects in altering compositions of immune cells and STAT3 signaling molecules in the co- culture system. Small RNA sequencing showed that SLE upregulates miR-let-7a/f levels in B16F10 melanomas. RT-qPCR analyses confirms these results. SLE elevates miR-let- 7a/f levels, and inhibits CCR7 (a target gene of miR-let-7a/f) signaling in melanoma cells. In a lung metastasis mouse model, SLE inhibits melanoma metastasis, elevates miR-let-7a/f levels, and suppresses CCR7 signaling. Knockdown of miR-let-7a/f diminishes the effects of SLE on CCR7 signaling and melanoma cell invasion; and overexpression of CCR7 lessens the effects of SLE on melanoma cell invasion. Chrysoeriol shows in vitro and in vivo anti-melanoma effects. Molecular dynamics and microscale thermophoresis assays demonstrate that chrysoeriol directly binds to Src. Chrysoeriol suppresses the Src/STAT3 pathway in melanoma cells and tissues. Chrysoeriol's anti-proliferative effects are diminished by STAT3 over- activation in melanoma cells. Chrysoeriol also has inhibitory effects in vemurafenib- resistant melanoma cell and animal models. RNA-seq analyses shows that syndecan-3 mRNA level is lower in vemurafenib-resistant cells than in vemurafenib-sensitive cells, and chrysoeriol reverses this vemurafenib resistance-associated downregulation. RT-qPCR and Western blotting analyses confirmed the results. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that reprograming immune microenvironment, partially mediated by inhibiting STAT3 signaling, contributes to the anti-melanoma mechanisms of SLE. Regulation of the miR-let-7a/f-CCR7 pathway is another mechanism underlying the anti-melanoma effects of SLE. Chrysoeriol is identified to be one of the active components responsible for the anti- melanoma effects of SLE. Inhibiting the Src/STAT3 pathway contributes to the anti- melanoma mechanisms of chrysoeriol. Chrysoeriol is able to overcome vemurafenib resistance in melanoma, and upregulation of syndecan-3 is involved in the action mechanisms. This study provides further pharmacological and chemical justifications for the use of the formula SL in treating melanoma, and suggests that SLE and SLE- derived compounds have the potential to be developed as modern alternative and/or complimentary agents for melanoma management

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the cultural dilemma that Chinese intellectuals are forced to confront with between tradition and Western Scholarship in Late Imperial and Modern China. As a traditional poet and scholar, Huang Jie (1873-1935) believed that the Manchurian reign was the reason for China’s collapse during Late Qing Era, and Chinese traditional culture would be the only remedy for the rapidly decaying society. Therefore, Huang initiated the campaign named “Nationality Conservation” in the aim of overthrowing the Manchu Empire. While sticking to “conservative” values, Huang adopted foreign/ Western cultural concepts and attempted to rephrase them with Chinese scholarship. All these endeavors had made Huang’s cultural identity confusing. Hence, this dissertation attempts to deal with Huang Jie’s understanding of culture through analyzing his poetry writings and poetic studies. Immersed by Confucian doctrines about the relationship between poetry and politics, Huang paid special attention to the cultural cultivating function of classical poetry. This ideology of “Cultivation through Poetry” was specifically generated from the Mao Shixu in Eastern Han Dynasty, and then repeatedly expressed in Huang’s poetic works in order to change the corrupt Modern society. In spite of this, Huang still respected and paid serious attention to the literariness of poetry, either in poetry writings or poetic studies. He spent great efforts on the prosody and therefore was well commended among Late Qing and Early Republican poets. Hence, this dissertation thoroughly examines how Huang Jie negotiated the tension between political and literary aspects of classical poetry. After introducing his life history and the ideology of “Cultivation through Classical Poetry”, chapter two and three focus on themes and characteristics of Huang’s poetry. These two chapters explore how Huang established his own poetic style under the trend of Song Poetry Movement commencing from Late Qing. The last chapter investigates Huang’s view on the evolution of literature and focuses on his abundant studies of classical poetry. In the conclusion, this dissertation would like to demonstrate that as a poet and scholar, Huang Jie established the traditional cultural identity, same as his friends in Nanshe, while his faith of “Cultivation through classical poetry” was well challenged at that tumultuous Modern time.

Abstract:

Culture is commonly viewed as the most significant factor that distinguishes one ethic group from another. Writing is primarily defined as the carrier of culture. Religion is generally conceded to be the important way to convey culture, while culture is primly manifested by religion. Shang Dynasty that started up as a very first dynasty boasts of literary inscription, in the same time, it is discovered to be the earliest era of writing system in existence. All that is attributed to the Oracle Bone Inscriptions unearthed. Hence, Oracle Bone Inscriptions is associated with the culture study of Shang Dynasty. Central to the culture of Shang Dynasty is the religion culture in the sense that Oracle Bone Inscriptions articulates a great deal of records related to religion. Oracle Bone Inscriptions, accordingly, manages to provide abundant and genuine documents and evidences for the purpose of studying the culture of Shang Dynasty. The research aims to focus on the Oracle Bone Inscriptions as a main object of analysis, with the combination of the study of Oracle Bone, history of Shang Dynasty together with anthropology, which intends to explore the characteristics of China’s religion and develop a new definition. The Shang Dynasty is regarded as a period of strengthening religious belief and rituals. The degree of China’s religion ceremony represents itself in a statement of full popularity and development in Shang Dynasty which is implicated by the Oracle Bone Inscriptions, and the worship ceremony is embodied in China’s religion. Through the research, it is concluded that the core belief of China’s religion mainly revolves around ancestor worship and its consciousness; particular religious sites, such as ancestor temples; worship ancestor of genetic connection as well as ancestor of social groups; and belief of ethics and morality. Religion is closely concerned in society construction and nation building; moreover, it exerts a significant influence on Chinese cultures in many aspects.

Abstract:

“Gold” is a colour indicating the colour of an object. It is a unique colour word which represents the colour of gold. From ancient to the present, “gold” is a common Chinese word which is frequently used in the literature. Furthermore, “gold” is the symbol of goodness in the traditional Chinese society. Nowadays, “gold” represents noble, luxury, wealth, hope, etc in the cultural connotation. This dissertation consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background, purpose of the topic and key points of the study. The second chapter is divided into three parts. In the first part, it begins to look for the semantic origin of the colour word “gold” by analyzing its original meaning, aboriginal meaning and quotative meaning. In the second part, it demonstrates the development of cultural connotation in China and elaborates the cultural connotation in the present Chinese society. In the third part, the colour word “gold” is compared with the colour words “yellow” and “red” to identify their differences and similarities of cultural connotations. In the third chapter, it mainly focuses on phraseology function of “gold” and its combinations. Meanwhile, the aspects of word-formation, syntactical functions, sentence structure of “gold” and its combinations will be discussed. The fourth chapter analyzes the usage and effect of “gold” and its combinations with regard to rhetoric. It also illustrates and explains the features of usage and rhetorical effects on seven categories of figures of speech which are fairly typical. The last chapter is the conclusion of the whole dissertation. “Gold” is a very unique colour word which differentiates from other colour words such as “red”, “yellow” and so on. “Gold” has been representing a positive image from the past, even nowadays, “gold” is still one of the most glamorous colours.
