Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine marketing strategies that India is currently applying to promote itself as a competitive yoga destination. Design/methodology/approach The methodological approach consisted of a constructivist research paradigm, a qualitative methodology and an interview-based data collection method. Ten in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with yoga practitioners from various backgrounds and yoga levels who have travelled to India for yoga tourism purposes. Findings The findings determined that interpretation of yoga tourism is crucial in the choice of marketing approach adopted by destinations offering yoga retreats because, as the study has shown, various perceptions of yoga constitute the basis for particular promotional strategies. Research limitations/implications Future research could expand on the sample size and demographics of the current study by investigating, possibly through comparative means, larger groups of more diversified yoga practitioners from different countries or backgrounds. Practical implications It was recommended that India’s tourism marketers re-design their approach concerning an ‘authentic’ yoga experience. Indian destination marketing organisations should target those searching for an authentic yoga experience and use imagery that is realistic. Originality/value The findings of this study have led to the re-positioning of yoga tourism in India, utilising a unique combinative approach in which a more inclusive concept of wellness is juxtaposed against a lack of any religious referencing. It was also revealed that the motivations of yoga tourists are only partially targeted through an undifferentiated strategic marketing approach.

SummaryStudy aim: To assess the effects of yoga exercises on the flexibility of the spine in male and female students aged 19–22 years old. Material and methods: The study comprised 59 male and female first-year students, aged 19–22 years old (mean 19.6 ± 0.9), studying Sport and Tourism Management at the Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice. The participants took part in an obligatory yoga class, of 90 minutes duration, once a week over a 13-week period. The ranges of motion of the spine in the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes were measured using the Rippstein Plurimeter-V. Results: The study indicated a statistically significant increase of the spine flexibility in forward and lateral bending before and after the yoga classes in the entire studied group. In the men, a significant increase of the range of motion in backward bending was also noted. In the women, and in all of the participants (women and men together), a significant increase of the range of motion in the torsion was noted. Conclusions: Regular yoga exercises could increase the flexibility of the spine and the hamstring muscles. Hatha yoga training may be a good intervention for improving flexibility, but for better results it should be performed more often than once a week.

Abstract:
From books to movies, the media is now flush with spiritual and wellness tourist-related images, films, and fiction (which are primarily produced in the West) about Southeast Asia. Combined with the positive effects of spiritual practices, greater numbers of tourists are travelling to Southeast Asia for mindfulness, yoga, and other spiritual pursuits. Influenced by popular mass media coverage, such as Hollywood movies and literary bestsellers like Eat Pray Love (2006) and tourism imaginaries about particular peoples and places, spiritual tourists are visiting Southeast Asia in increasing numbers. They travel to learn about and practice mindfulness, so as to recharge their batteries, achieve spiritual fulfillment, enhance their spiritual well-being, and find a true self. However, there is a notable lack of scholarly work around the nature and outcomes of spiritual tourism in the region. Owing to its Buddhist temples, cultural heritage, religious history, infrastructure, and perceived safety, Chiang Mai in Thailand, in particular, has become a major spiritual tourism destination. Based on participant observation including informal conversations, and 10 semi-structured interviews in Chiang Mai during two summers in 2016 and 2018, our research explored why Western tourists travel to Chiang Mai to engage in mindfulness practices regardless of their religious affiliation. We explored their faith in their spiritual practice in Chiang Mai. Rather than the faith implied in religion, this faith refers to trust or confidence in something. Interestingly, none of the informants identified themselves as Buddhist even though many had practiced Buddhist mindfulness for years. They had faith that mindfulness would resolve problems, such as depression and anxiety, following life events such as divorces, deaths in family, drug abuse, or at least help free them from worries. They noted that mindfulness practices were a constructive means of dealing with negative life events. This study found that the informants sought to embed mindfulness and other spiritual practices into the fabric of their everyday life. Their faith in mindfulness led them to a destination where Buddhist heritage, history, and culture are concentrated but also consumed. Whilst discussing the preliminary findings through a critical lens, the research recommends future research pathways.

Singh, Roopa Bala. "A Critical Yoga Studies Approach to Grappling with Race: Introducing “Racial Tourism,” “Racial Mobilities,” and “Justice Storytelling” in the Context of Racial Fraud in the Academy." Genealogy 5, no. 2 (April 25, 2021): 44. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/genealogy5020044.

Abstract:
In this Critical Yoga Studies (CYS) examination, I introduce terms, “racial tourism,” and “racial mobility,” and a method, “justice storytelling.” These terms and this method are poised to be used strategically in the quest to grapple with race and racial fraud in the academy. Racial fraud in the academy is exemplified by, but not limited to, infamous scholars such as Rachel Dolezal, Jessica Krug, Andrea Smith, Elizabeth Warren, and BethAnn McLaughlin. The terms “racial mobility” and “racial tourism,” intentionally create space in which to notice and assess racial fraud. In establishing CYS, I aim to provide epistemic space in which pause the cycle of harm (ie. instigated by exposure to racial fraud in the academy) and reaction (outrage, condemnation) and make space to notice, witness, and be (“this is happening”). The terms, method, and guiding questions offered in this study create epistemic space to notice race, to continue to be despite racism, and assess the ongoing project of racial categorizations in order to quell disorientation that results from harm. I add these terms to the basket of more highly circulating terms (such as “cultural appropriation,” and “identity fraud”) used to describe and respond to: (1) the specific phenomenon of white scholars engaging in racial fraud, and (2) the broader experience of living with and within inseparable systems of race, racial categorizations, and racism in the ivory tower. CYS is grounded in legal scholarship and critical race theory. I build on “legal storytelling” in an experimental, poetic form I call, “justice storytelling,” which enables healing. I find the terms I introduce, “racial tourism” and “racial mobility,” reveal a state of movement at the essence of the racial takings and accumulation of racial value enacted by white scholars committed to racial appropriation and fraudulently coding as Black, brown, and Indigenous in the academy.

Abstract:
Tourism is mainly seen as a growth industry since the flow of tourists to different tourist destinations contributes to economic growth. The importance of an area as a tourist delight is a function of three major factors; accessibility, natural and cultural attraction and social amenities. Southern Adamawa Geo-Political Zone has a wide range of such attractions, and is easily accessible to the state capital, Yola, where social amenities are concentrated, a common characteristic of Nigerian urban centers. The research therefore, assess the spatial distribution of tourist attraction sites using Global Positioning System (GPS) to establish the coordinates of the sites, and the tourist attraction sites were identified on the Google Earth. Notable tourist attraction site identified are the Farai festival, Lamurde warm spring, Kiri dam and resort, Gumti park and Vunom wrestling festival among others. These sites are easily accessible by a motor able road over a short distance to the state capital Yola, which houses most social amenities most importantly are the hospitality and catering service. The study recommend among others, the upgrading of facilities and infrastructures in and around these attraction sites, creation of tourism database to be linked to a website to showcase these sites to the rest of the world

Abstract:
Purpose The paper aims to present the case study of Arillas, a small beach resort on Corfu, Greece, where the locals have taken their fate into their own hands in the middle of a crisis. It presents the historical background of the development of tourism in Arillas, the actions that have been undertaken by the local stakeholders to actively participate in the management of the village and to attract alternative, responsible and sustainable forms of tourism to Arillas, and the main players contributing to this process, as well as a look at three important themes contributing to the change. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on an empirical study spanning many years by a local inhabitant who has an affinity with place management and marketing. It also includes some conclusions of a quantitative, questionnaire-based customer satisfaction survey carried out in 2011 and 2012 among 600 visitors. The analysis of the quantitative data was carried out by the Head of the Corfu Department of the National Tourism Organisation of Greece. Findings The paper demonstrates how a shared vision, combined with empowerment and communication among local stakeholders on improving the place, as well as many joint actions carried out on a volunteer basis have, first of all, dramatically increased the level of engagement of the locals in the present and future of Arillas, and second they have attracted and are attracting more individual travellers who are coming for the hospitality, local food and products, music and cultural festivals, walking, yoga and meditation rather than the outdated mass tourism model. Research limitations/implications It would be very interesting to perform another quantitative, questionnaire-based survey now to compare the results to those of 2012. Originality/value This paper demonstrates that a bottom-up, horizontal approach to placemaking and place marketing can yield substantial results even (or especially) in an adverse economical and social environment.

PurposeThe concept of camping has changed over time, with new niche markets appealing to sustainable tourists. Glamping – short for “glamorous camping” – offers a way to experience the positive aspects of camping while minimising the negatives. This paper aims to present the empirical findings of an exploratory study that examined tourists’ Web-reviews to identify the expressive dimensions that describe these travellers’ experience.Design/methodology/approachA content analysis of Web reviews provided by tourists on glamping booking websites produced a battery of concepts used to assess glamping experiences from the guests’ perspective. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used.FindingsThe analysis identified 11 themes: experience, hotel, learn, host, camping, nature, food, ingredients, different, eco and yoga. The results reveal that, when quality of experience is evaluated through user-generated content, two attributes appear to be involved – functional elements offered by service providers and consumers’ emotional elements.Originality/valueWeb-reviews clearly offer important information to managers in the glamping sector. The present study’s analysis revealed that different market segments (i.e. couples, visitors with families or friends and those travelling alone) share certain aspects of glamping experiences.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction. This study purposed to examine energy expenditure (EE) of one-hour hatha yoga (HY) practice and to compare changes in heart rate variability (HRV) during and right after HY practice. Material and methods. A total of ten experienced female HY practitioners participated in the study voluntarily. Daily EE on a weekday and during a one-hour HY session was measured using a metabolic holter. The ECG holter was applied to record HRV variables 5 minutes before, during, 5 minutes after and 10 minutes after the one-hour HY session. The HY session included HY asanas for the first 55 minutes and meditation during the last 5 minutes. Results. Participants showed 2201.40 kcal of total EE, and 421.70 kcal of active EE during the weekday. Active EE was 109.70 kcal (26% of daily active EE) during the one-hour HY session, and the mean MET was recorded as 2.57. HRV measurements showed crucial changes. Increased sympathetic activity observed in SDNN, RMSSD, NN50, pNN50, LF/HF, and HF did not reach the initial level after 15 minutes of total recovery time. Conclusions. One hour of HY practice provided moderate EE. Moreover, 10 minutes of supine rest in addition to 5 minutes of the meditation phase of HY practice is not seen as completely effective in improving parasympathetic activity and returning the practitioners to their initial level. Extending the meditation phase at the end of the HY session by more than 10 minutes and measuring the recovery process of HRV could add more detailed results to the literature.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTOne area that has tourism potential is Kledung District, Temanggung Regency. According to the Regional Tourism Development Master Plan (RIPPDA) of Temanggung Regency in 2012, this area is included in the Regency Strategic Tourism Area (KSPK) of Kledung and its surroundings with the theme of the Sindoro Sumbing foot tourism. Given the location and geographical position which is on the main tourist route of Yogya - Borobudur - Dieng, this is an indication of the great potential for Kledung Village in tourism development. One of the tourist objects in Kledung Village is Embung Kledung. With a panoramic view of the natural scenery of mountains and very beautiful waters and the surrounding biodiversity, this area is very potential to be developed as a tourist attraction. However, the problems that occur are limited access from the main road to tourist objects and limited supporting facilities for tourist objects. With the increasing number of visitors, a more efficient, precise, and sustainable direction for the use of space is needed to preserve nature as its main attraction. This study aims to provide directions/alternatives for the development of the Embung Kledung Tourism Object based on ecological tourism (ecotourism) which maintains natural preservation as its main attraction but can provide economic and social benefits for the local community. With a mixed research methodology, it produces several things: 1). The Ecotourism concept that is applied takes into account 5 (five) elements, namely, environment, community, education and experience, sustainability, and management; 2). Priority infrastructure needs are circulation arrangement, additional electricity capacity, waste handling, and waste management; 3) Four clusters development were found and 28 types of facilities were required. Keywords: Embung Kledung, Ecotourism Concept, Tourism Object Development.ABSTRAKSalah satu daerah yang memiliki potensi pariwisata adalah Kecamatan Kledung, Kabupaten Temanggung. This article analyzes the ecranization pattern between the novel Raksasa Dari Yogya and the adapted film. Filmize novel usually changes the story text's content because not all novel story text content can be moved on the screen. This study aims to get the changes that occur in the novel's adaptation pattern to the form of a film medium, and the shape of representations existed in the two works. This study uses an ecranization perspective. The methodology used in this study is qualitative because the data are in the form of narrative text in novels and visual texts which are the results of the film captured Raksasa Dari Yogya. The data collection method was collected by reading, taking notes, watching, recording film source data, and processing it. Data analysis is in the form of interpretation of data obtained from novel texts and films. The study results show that there are changes: reducing, adding, or varying modifications in terms of the content of the story text. It is caused by the difference between the media used between novels and films. Books and movies reveal Yogyakarta local wisdom representations in the form of arts and tourism. The local wisdom depicted in novels and movies reflects Yogyakarta culture's richness, strengthening a region's identity. The changes can make the film more attractive without changing the substance of the novel as a whole.

The Pervasive Presence in Asia of ascetic practitioners—whether sedate, shorn, and robed monks or fierce, ash-smeared, naked yogis—has long fascinated Western observers and certainly nourished stereotypes of a mysterious, otherworldly, and impenetrable East. In India especially, the ascetic's figure has fueled the speculations of scholars, artists, tourists, and religious seekers for centuries (Oman 1905; Narayan 1988). Most depictions of Indian culture, whether indigenous or foreign, evocative or analytic, include portraits or analyses of world-renouncers.1 And yet with the notable exception of numerous fictional explorations (e.g., Bhattacharya 1978; Markandaya 1963; R K. Narayan 1980), the renouncer remains a figure whose existence comments on the human predicament but whose human thoughts and feelings remain opaque.
