Abstract:

Numerical revolution has created a new form of delinquency. The cyber-criminality, known as internet «browsing », has become a real criminal activity for some young men. The family, as the first cell for socialization and the melting pot for all social behaviors, seems to be more appropriate to know the parents’ perception of «browsing ». The objective of this study is to understand, know, and explain the attitude and the behavior of the parents concerning «browsing ». Through a ground research and the qualitative and quantitative method, the study reveals parents negative perception concerning «browsing » with Yopougon. To reduce the practice of «browsing » , it is compulsory to involve and engage parents in the campaign of sensitization.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to show the existence of a link between ritual crimes and the cybercrime that takes place in the territory of Abidjan. It shows the logics of the actors and proposes effective policies to combat this phenomenon. It was carried out in two municipalities of Abidjan, namely: Yopougon (with the largest demographic plan) and Abobo. The survey was conducted with 50 people, including 20 in Yopougon and 30 in Abobo. The survey was conducted on the basis of reasoned choice using data collection techniques such as documentary study, observation, and inquiry. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that there is no particular type of cybercriminals who commit ritual crimes. Everyone does it, but for different purposes. Most of them spell the target in order to annihilate anyone that is resistance and is refusing. For others, mystical rituals help them in their understanding of how to escape the police and justice. They involve other actors in the network on their activities. In this case, the agents of western union, targets, security agents and others are also involved.

Abstract:

In Côte d’Ivoire, 15 % of maternal deaths are related to illegal abortions. Despite the known consequences, abortion practice is increasing more and more in a restrictive legislative context. Few formal studies and national statistics on the phenomenon exist, much less at the level of precarious slums of Abidjan. This article is a contribution to the understanding of abortion practice in the unprivileged urban context of Yopougon in Abidjan. It aims to analyze the logics and conditions of abortion in the precarious slums of Yopougon. A survey of a sample of 309 women aged 15 to 49 years, living in union in six precarious slums and, an investigation in three public health facilities and five private clinics and among traditional healers were conducted. Results indicate an overall prevalence of 11%. Women who aborted are generally young (85.3%), with no education (35.30%) or primary level of education (32.35%). Proportion of women who aborted increase with parity up to three children and decreases from the fourth child. The lack of financial resources (79.41%) and the fear and stigma (47.05%) are the main reasons of abortion. The majority of abortions took place in private clinics (58.82%).

Abstract:

Abstract Nationalism has become a contested construct because scholars doubt its ideological authenticity and global migratory consciousness, which promotes transcultural / transnational identity, and problematizes its raison d’être. Though Abouet and Oubrerie’s graphic novel could be read as a portrayal of the emerging urban center and its postmodern identities, this study rather investigates how Aya de Yopougon galvanizes juvenile nationalistic consciousness through age-long African communal identity. Using the postcolonial theory, the paper argues that the epistemology of nationalism, as a forerunner of nationhood, has been inherently encapsulated in African communal identity as manifested in the lives of middle-class dwellers of Yopougon, a suburb of Abidjan. It further deconstructs the symbolic Eurocentric paradigms of nationalism because nationalistic consciousness is located in the African definition of “family” and “community” revealed in the setting of Yopougon which contrasts with other spaces that bear the emblem of nationhood in the novel. Yopougon is not Anderson’s “imagined community”; its inhabitants reflect African communal identity that is located in gender complementarities and civic interdependence. The paper concludes that communalism could be an African brand of modern nationalism, used to develop the nationalistic and communalistic consciousness of the Ivorian youths who are faced with crude realities of a postcolonial society.

RESUMO O presente artigo tem como escopo uma proposta pedagógica da aplicabilidade da Narrativa Gráfica Aya de Yopougon (vol. 1 e 2) (ABOUET; OUBRERIE, 2011; 2012), reconhecida pelo formato como História em Quadrinho (HQ), enquanto recurso didático para o ensino de História da África no Ensino Médio. A HQ apresenta como enredo a vida da personagem Aya, de 19 anos, residente no bairro de Yopougon, em Abidjan, na Costa do Marfim, no fim dos anos de 1970. O foco narrativo desloca-se entre as experiências vividas pelas três amigas, Aya, Bintou e Adjoua, e as de seus respectivos núcleos familiares. Apresentamos uma proposta analítica a partir de núcleos de discussões contidos na HQ que podem ser discutidos em sala de aula, como, por exemplo: a liberdade sexual feminina, as relações familiares e de afeto na cultura africana. A metodologia adotada é de cunho bibliográfico, pois levantamos a fortuna crítica acerca das temáticas presentes no artigo, como: HQ e educação, História da África e epistemologia de gênero africana. Nossa fundamentação teórica está alicerçada em autores como Waldomiro Vergueiro (2012), Carlos Serrano; Maurício Waldman (2010), entre outros e outras. O trabalho contribuirá com a comunidade acadêmica a partir de uma leitura sobre o ensino de História da África em uma perspectiva de gênero textual por meio do uso das HQs na educação. ABSTRACT This article focuses on a pedagogic proposal concerning the applicability of the graphic novel Aya de Yopougon (vols. 1 and 2) (ABOUET; OUBRERIE, 2011, 2012), well-known for its format as a series of comic books, as a didactic resource for teaching History at High School. The graphic novel’s plot follows the life the 19-year-old character Aya, who lives in the district of Yopougon, in Abidjian, in Ivory Coast, in the late 1970’s. The narrative focus moves among the life experiences of the friends Aya, Bintou, and Adjoua, as well as those of their respective nuclear families. We present an analytical proposal based on the core discussions found in those comics which can be discussed in the classroom, such as, for instance: feminine sexual liberty and affective and family relationships in the African culture. Methodologically, this is a bibliographic study in which we go over critical works on the themes found in the article, such as: comic books and education, Africa’s history, and African gender epistemology. Our theoretically framework comprises authors such as Waldomiro Vergueiro (2012), Carlos Serrano and Maurício Waldman (2010), among others. This work will contribute to the academic community as it proposes a reading of the teaching of the History of Africa from a text genre perspective according to which comics may be positively used in education. La HQ presenta la vida del personaje de Aya, de 19 años, que vive en el barrio de Yopougon, en Abidjan, Costa de Marfil, a los fines de la década de 1970. El curso narrativo se mueve entre las experiencias vividas por tres amigas, Aya, Bintou y Adjoua, y las de sus respectivos núcleos familiares. Presentamos una propuesta analítica basada en grupos de discusión contenidos en la HQ que se pueden tratar en el aula, como, por ejemplo, la libertad sexual femenina, las relaciones familiares y el afecto en la cultura africana. La metodología adoptada es de sello bibliográfico, pues elevamos la fortuna crítica sobre los temas presentes en el artículo, como: Cómics y educación, Historia de África y epistemología africana de género. Abstract:

In the search for plants able to fight against diabetes, we have initiated an ethnopharmacological survey on the markets of the city of Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire. The markets of three communes in the city were visited for this purpose: Yopougon, Abobo and Adjamé. In Yopougon, we visited Wassakara market. The large Abobo market and the Gouro market were respectively chosen for Abobo and Adjamé. This choice was justified by an impressive number of medicinal plants sellers in these markets. The survey interviewed 120 herbalists on the basis of a questionnaire sheet. These investigations revealed 27 species of plants used in traditional medicine, in the treatment of diabetes. These plant species belong to 20 botanical families with four strongly represented which are Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Rubiaceae. Three parts of plants are indicated by herbalists in the treatment of diabetes: leaves, twigs and whole plant. The preparation techniques are decoction and kneading. The preparations are used for drinking and purging by diabetic people. In relation to citation frequencies, two plants are regularly used. They are Phyllantus amarus (Fc = 9.86%) and Nauclea latifolia (Fc = 9.49%). These two plants were frequently encountered during our surveys. They are the most important species indicated against diabetes by Abidjan population. Both of these species of plant should be subject of other studies to prove the scientific basis of their empirical use in traditional medicine.

Abstract:

The present study was carried out to inventory medicinal plants storage conditions on the markets of Abidjan district. A survey was conducted from August to October 2015 in three settings of the district of Abidjan (Abobo, Adjame and Yopougon). A total of 350 sellers of medicinal plants were interrogated using semi-structured interviews. The respondents were predominantly female (98.9%), aged between 30 and 60 years. The supply of medicinal plants in the markets was done by the wholesalers (86%) who themselves harvested plants in different forests or savanah of Côte d’Ivoire. The majority of sellers (73%) did not apply any measure of hygiene in storage. These people in 99.4% of case were not trained on good storage practices. Sale places were accessible to rodents and exposed to dust caused by traffic jamp. The presence of mud (9.1%) and garbage (23.1%) was noted in the immediate surrounding of the displays. These practices of processing and storage of medicinal plants were similar in all the visited settings. These storage conditions may constitute a hazardous risk for the consumer and justify the degradation of medicinal plants on the markets.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to determine the differences of fertility between HIV 1 infected and uninfected women in Abidjan, Cote d Ivoire, using data available in an observational study conducted in 1995 and 1996 in 2 antenatal care centres in the district of Yopougon, Abidjan, within an intervention programme to reduce mother to child HIV 1 transmission DITRAME project, ANRS 049 . Fertility indicators have been constructed from retrospective data on pregnancies and births, and univariate and multivariate analyses have been performed on these indicators and stratified by age groups to compare HIV 1 positive and HIV negative populations. The main outcome measures were the number of pregnancies, the number of miscarriages, the risk of miscarriage and the proportion of primigravida. Four thousand, three hundred and ninety six women agreed to HIV testing: 12.1 were found to be HIV 1 infected. HIV 1 positive women had significantly fewer pregnancies than HIV negatives in age groups 25-29 P =0.05 and 30-34 P =0.008 . The risk of having had at least one abortion or stillbirth was significantly higher for HIV 1 infected women than for HIV negatives OR=1.28, 95 CI: 1.02-1.60 , when controlling for social and demographic factors. This study suggests that HIV 1 infection has deleterious consequences on female fertility, with lower fertility rates and more frequent adverse pregnancy outcomes. Family planning and antenatal care services should consider antenatal HIV counselling and testing in women in areas of high HIV prevalence.

Abstract:

Long perceived as an institutional response to the problem of local development, the decentralization adopted and introduced in the 1980s favored the creation of numerous communes in Côte d'Ivoire. These local and regional authorities, which in principle have legal personality and financial autonomy, are struggling to satisfy the expectations of politicians and populations. Consequently, the consequences are felt in space and we are witnessing an anarchic and illegal occupation of public servitudes as is the case in the commune of Yopougon in Abidjan. The present study is thus a contribution to the lasting resolution of the problem of the anarchic occupation of the public domain for the preservation of the urban landscape of municipalities. The main objective is to show the impact on the urban landscape of the use of the improvement of municipalities' own revenue. The methodology used to achieve this objective was based on the observation, inventory of the spaces documentary research, observation and maintenance with local and governmental authorities to obtain data on the mode of acquisition and enhancement of spaces. The results reveal that these areas are occupied with more or less the agreement of the various local and governmental authorities and their management remains problematic.

Abstract:

The difficulty in accessibility to energy by households in some regions is one of the major problems in World. This article described the use of some fuels such as charcoal fuel, and these different effects on consumers and producers in Abidjan of Cote d’Ivoire. A qualitative analysis through the households has showed that charcoal was the fuel most used in households and even the choice of its poor energies mainly socio economic. Moreover, the production and consumption have a negative impact on the health of producers and consumers. This research has shown that many users are unaware of the health hazards. This paper argues that to improve these situations require more coordinated and innovative plans and policies from the government. This paper suggests that greater emphasis will be needed in reducing dependence of biomass for cooking, promoting domestic alternative energy sources, and also presented a policy approach to minimize or eradicate health problems.

Abstract:

Our study aims to evaluate medical practices in order to reduce patient doses for frontal examination of the thorax in postero-anterior view. Thus, in five (5) radiological rooms of five (5) most frequented hospitals in Abidjan, thirty (30) patients per medical center, meaning a total of one hundred and fifty (150) patients, providing chest examination reports were followed. Using a DAP- meter consisting of an ionization chamber attached to the outlet of the tube and an electrometer, the dose in air (Dair) was measured. Then by calculating the entry dose (De) for each patient was determined. Thus, from the statistical method of the 75th percentile we determine the level of diagnostic references (DRL) in each room as well as in all the rooms of our study. The inlet dose averages (Dem) in each room and in all rooms were calculated. The couples (NRD, Dem) per room expressed in mGy (0.252, 0.226), (0.249, 0.213), (0.164, 0.159), (0.128, 0.117) and (0.234, 0.211) respectively at the CHU of Cocody, CHU of Yopougon, HMA, ICA and PISAM. By comparing the NRD value of De to that of Dem in each radiological room, we found Dem values lower than the NRD. This indicates that the doses are optimized in the rooms of our study, likewise, for all the rooms in Abidjan (0.220, 0.177). However, the average values of the voltage 104.04 kV and the load 4.55 mAs tell us that efforts can be made in the rooms of our study, increasing the voltage and reducing the load, to avoid unneeded doses of X-rays.

Abstract:

The notion of gender awakens in men and women a kind of competition in the couple; Sometimes causing frustration, conflict, antagonism and reciprocal depreciation. Thus, categorical differentiation appears within the couple as a source of accentuation of the differences between men and women in the fulfillment of family roles, affecting both the judgments of man over woman and woman on man. In order to appreciate the reality in the couple, this study proposes to determine the incidence of the categorical differentiation on the social representations in the couple, through the interactions. To this effect, the scales of evaluation of the social relations of Bazoumana are used on a sample of 40 couples, ie 80 subjects selected in the commune of Yopougon, in the district of Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire) according to the technique of reasoned choice. The analysis of the results obtained reveals that social representations are influenced by the categorical differentiation in the couple. In other words, women and men are not assessed in the same way within the couple.

Abstract:

Introduction Acute leukaemia are the clonal and malignant proliferation of immature hematopoietic cells (blast), blocked in their differentiation process. There is an interaction between cancer cells and the clotting process. This could be the expression of Tissue Factor (TF) on the surface of tumor cells; or a lesion of the vascular endothelium and platelet activation. The result is an activation of clotting that can lead to disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). The objective of this study was to assess the risk of DIC occurring in patients with acute leukaemia. Methods This was a cross-sectional study for analytical purposes that took place on 40 frozen samples from the biobank of the haematology laboratory of Teaching Hospital Yopougon for which the diagnosis of acute leukaemia had been taken from myelogram. The myelogram results were accompanied by hemogram data. PTTa, QT, fibrinogen and D-Dimers were performed on these samples. The risk assessment of DIC occurred was determined on the recommendations of the International Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH). Results We noted a female predominance with a Sex Ratio (M / F) of 0.90. The average age of the patients was 38 years (± 23 years) with extremes ranging from 2 to 84 years. ALL represented 20 % of cases against 80 % for AMLs. Hemogram parameters were characterized by severe anaemia (Tx Hb < 6 g / dL) in 52.5 % of cases; hyperleukocytosis > 100.103 / mm3 in 35 % of cases; thrombocytopenia < 25.103 / mm3 in 40 % of case; and significant blood and spinal cord blastosis (> 80 %). The lengthening of the PTTa was observed in 50 % of cases, compared to 40% for the QT. Similarly, hyperfibrinemia was present in 65% of cases. D-Dimers were high in almost all subject (95 % of cases). According to the ISTH criteria, 17.5 % of subjects were at risk of developing a DIC. Conclusion The risk of occurrence of DIC is indeed present during acute leukaemia. The parameters of haemostasis are thus found to be crucial data in the follow-up assessment during the diagnosis of acute leukaemia.

Road traffic emission inventories based on bottom-up methodology, are calculated for each road segment from fuel consumption and traffic volume data obtained during field measurements in Yopougon. High emissions of black carbon (BC) from vehicles are observed at major road intersections, in areas surrounding industrial zones and on highways. Highest emission values from road traffic are observed for carbon monoxide (CO) (14.8 t/d) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) (7.9 t/d), usually considered as the major traffic pollution tracers. Furthermore, peak values of CO emissions due to personal cars (PCs) are mainly linked to the old age of the vehicle fleet with high emission factors. The highest emitting type of vehicle for BC on the highway is PC (70.2%), followed by inter-communal taxis (TAs) (13.1%), heavy vehicles (HVs) (9.8%), minibuses (GBs) (6.4%) and intra-communal taxis (WRs) (0.4%). While for organic carbon (OC) emissions on the main roads, PCs represent 46.7%, followed by 20.3% for WRs, 14.9% for TAs, 11.4% for GB and 6.7% for HVs. This work provides new key information on local pollutant emissions and may be useful to guide mitigation strategies such as modernizing the vehicle fleet and reorganizing public transportation, to reduce emissions and improve public health.

Background: “Soumbara” as well as other traditional foods of Côte d'Ivoire are produced in a traditional way. These foods may contain pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms. Aims: The aim of our work was to assess the sanitary quality of “Soumbara” sold in five communes of Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), in order to valorize it as a flavor enhancer. Material and Methods: A consumption survey as well as the analysis of some physico-chemical (pH, titratable acidity, Brix degree, moisture, and organic acids) and microbiological parameters (enumeration of MAG, Clostridium, Bacillus, Staphylococci, Salmonella, E. coli, and coliforms) were carried out in five (05) municipalities of Abidjan (Abobo, Yopougon, Port Bouet, Adjamé, and Treichville) on 75 samples. Results: The results of the survey showed that most of the respondents were familiar with “Soumbara” and often consumed it. These consumers stated that they did not experience any discomfort after consuming this food. Physicochemical analyses showed that the water content of the samples of “Soumbara” ranged from 16.50% to 19.28% and the pH varied from 6.32 ± 0.01 to 7.91± 0.02. “Soumbara” contained little follow-through which ranged from 0.10 ± 0.001 to 0.27 ± 0.05. “Soumbara” also contained phenolic compounds such as coumarins, hydroquinones, and caffeic acid. Microbiological analyses had revealed the presence of spoilage and pathogenic germs such as Bacillus, Staphylococcus, and E. coli at high loads exceeding the 2019/229/EC standard. Conclusions: However, due to the high load of spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms, this food eaten by sprinkling directly on the dish, without passing through a cooking process could expose the consumer to a risk of food poisoning. Abstract:

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a diagnostic emergency threatening patients in a major way. Pediatric renal extra purification methods are limited in African countries due to the nonavailability of resources. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) seems to be the modality that is the most practiced for children with acute renal failure (ARF). Methodology: We conducted a retrospective study on 5 years of records of children from 1 month to 15 years who have suffered an ARF and benefited from PD while being treated at the pediatric nephrology unit of the Chu of Yopougon. ARF is defined as the condition that exists when the serum creatinine level is high or equal to 200 µmol/l outside any underlying uropathies. Results: Out of the hospitalized 88 children for AKI, 33 were on PD. Twenty-two children have been on dialysis while 9 children had to discontinue treatment due to financial problems. The sex ratio was 0.46 and the average age was 8.1. The etiologies of the AKI were predominantly glomerular diseases (45%), malaria (31.8%), and secondary interstitial nephritis of toxic origin. The indications of the PD are anuria (31%), hyperkalemia (18%), acute edema of lung (13%), and hyperuremia (13%). Eight children had automated peritoneal dialysis, 02 children underwent manual PD, and 9 children had both methods of treatment. We recorded 31 mechanical complications and 10 infections. While 8 children died, 10 recovered from AKI. Conclusion: Trained surgical medical personnel and favorable economic statuses of patients are the factors that will determine the success of PD in our country.

Traffic source emission inventories for the rapidly growing West African urban cities are necessary for better characterization of local vehicle emissions released into the atmosphere of these cities. This study is based on local field measurements in Yopougon (Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire) in 2016; a site representative of anthropogenic activities in West African cities. The measurements provided data on vehicle type and age, traveling time, fuel type, and estimated amount of fuel consumption. The data revealed high traffic flow of personal cars on highways, boulevards, and backstreets, whereas high flows of intra-communal sedan taxis were observed on main and secondary roads. In addition, the highest daily fuel consumption value of 56 L·day−1 was recorded for heavy vehicles, while the lowest value of 15 L·day−1 was recorded for personal cars using gasoline. This study is important for the improvement of uncertainties related to the different databases used to estimate emissions either in national or international reports. This work provides useful information for future studies on urban air quality, climate, and health impact assessments in African cities. It may also be useful for policy makers to support implementation of emission reduction policies in West African cities.

Abstract:

New tools for the rapid diagnosis of hemoglobinosis could encourage the extension of their screening in Africa. Our goal was to assess the analytical performances of a rapid hemoglobin S and C detection test, the Sickle Scan. This was a cross-sectional study carried out in March 2019 at the Yopougon Teaching Hospital. The subjects followed for hemoglobinosis as well as the subjects seeking out an electrophoresis of their hemoglobin were included. We carried out the hemogram, the electrophoresis of hemoglobin at alkaline pH (reference method) coupled with the metabisulfite sickling test (Emmel test) and the rapid detection test to be evaluated. This immunochromatographic test is capable of detecting hemoglobins A, S, and C, and to infer the hemoglobin phenotype from there. The study recruited 191 individuals. The test detected hemoglobins S and C with a sensitivity of 99.4% and 97.7% respectively; a specificity of 93.3% and 99.3%. The positive likelihood ratio for hemoglobins S and C was 15 and 144 respectively. The negative likelihood ratio was 0.01 for hemoglobin S, and 0.02 for hemoglobin C. The intrinsic characteristics obtained make this test an interesting screening tool for hemoglobinosis S and C. Keywords: Diagnostic test, hemoglobinosis, Abidjan, sensitivity, specificity.
