Abstract:
Drawing on practices and teachings from Daoism, neo-Confucianism, and tantric Buddhism, Yoshida Kanetomo (1435–1511) created the system of Yuiitsu Shintō, also known eponymously as Yoshida Shintō, all the while making claims for Shintō as the world’s original religion. Important for the establishment of Yoshida Shintō was the creation of a program of rituals. This essay examines one of the three rituals created for the Yoshida ritual program, the Yoshida Shintō goma ritual, which hybridizes tantric Buddhist ritual organization and Daoist symbolism. A pragmatics of ritual is developed as a means of identifying the factors that Yoshida felt were salient in presenting the goma as a Yoshida Shintō ritual.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the nineteenth century Meiji Japanese self-reflection on modernity, civilization and identity that was compelled to negotiate between Racism and Imperialism. The Meiji vision of a global world was made up of a hierarchy of nations according to their level of enlightenment and civilization using the West as a benchmark. The study of Yoshida Masaharu’s travel account Kaikyō Tanken Perusha no Tabi (The Expedition to the Islamic World: The Journey to Persia) (Tokyo: Hakubunka, 1894) shows this attitude. Yoshida’s book is also quite valuable as the firsthand account of the Japanese interaction in 1880 with Persia of the Qajar dynasty in Iran as an entry into the Muslim world. Sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Japanese Mission was a small-scale version of the famous Iwakura Mission to learn about the West earlier between 1871-1873, as an investigation expedition to study the Muslim Middle East-Islamic affairs. The Japanese Mission of seven members including an Army officer representing the newly established Sanbō Honbu, the Japanese General Staff, and five businessmen, were headed by the envoy Yoshida Masaharu, a liberal Constitutionalist from Tosa domain whose views colored his interpretation of Qajar Iran and Shah Nasir al-Din’s reforms using Western know-how. The Yoshida Mission’s experience shows us some of the enduring perceptions as well as stereotyped images among the general Japanese public even today classifying Islam as an alien religion and the Middle Eastern world as a strange geography: exotic but alien, fascinating but also unfamiliar. Shoes and Modern Civilization Between Racism and Imperialism: The 1880 Yoshida Masaharu Mission of Meiji Japan to Qajar Iran as Global History Selçuk Esenbel Department of History, Boğaziçi University 13 This paper argues that the Yoshida travelogue actually reveals to us the complex cultural and political layers with which Yoshida saw Qajar Iran and provides an instructive journey into the mind of a nineteenth century Meiji Japanese elite who still carried their Edo cultural background as well as the more obvious Westernism of the new regime in order to decipher the global context of Iran. In turn, the Yoshida Mission’s impact on Iranian intellectuals and their subsequent 1906 Constitutional Revolution shows the global influences and connections between the history of two so-called Non-Western worlds in the process of adapting Western forms and ideas in their respective reformist agendas.

Abstract:
This paper describes fully implicit stress integration scheme for Yoshida’s 6thorder yield function combined with Yoshida-Uemori kinematic hardening model and its consistent tangent matrix. Cutting plane method was employed for accurate integrations of stress and state variables appeared in Yoshida-Uemori model. In the present scheme, equivalent plastic strain, stress tensor and all the state variables are treated as independent variables in order to handle the 6th order yield function which is not the J2 yield function, and the equilibriums for each variables are solved for the stress integration. Subsequently, exact consistent tangent matrix which is necessary for implicit static finite element simulation was obtained. The proposed scheme was implemented into finite element code LS-DYNA and deep drawing process for aluminum alloy sheet was calculated. The earing appearance after drawing was compared with the experiment.

Abstract:
The aortic wall structure of genetically determined hypercholesterolaemic (Yoshida) and control (Brown-Norway) rats was investigated by transmission and scanning electron and light microscopy. Leucocyte adherence mostly at branch sites and irregular protrusive structures were observed on the endothelial surface of the thoracic aorta of Yoshida, but not of Brown-Norway rats. The subendothelial space of the aortic wall of Yoshida rats was characterized by intimal cushions consisting of smooth muscle cells of 'synthetic phenotype' associated with adhering leucocytes and lipid droplets. Lipid infiltration of the cytoplasm of medial smooth muscle cells was observed on the inner part of the aortic arch and on the lateral parts of the large branches of Yoshida rats. This model of spontaneously hyperlipidaemic Yoshida rats is an appropriate 'moderate' injury system, which may be useful for studies of multiple risk factors for atherogenesis.

Abstract:
A new species, Tekellina yoshidai sp. n., is described based on the holotype female from the Maritime Province of Russia. It is the first record of the genus in Russia and the northernmost record in the entire range. The new species is most similar to T. sadamotoi Yoshida & Ogata, 2016 from Japan. Figures are provided for both species. The male palp of T. sadamotoi was studied with a SEM. It was found that palpal sclerites in T. sadamotoi and other Tekellina species are incorrectly homologized. Judging from the structure of the male palp and the female palpal claw, Tekellina seems to be misplaced in Theridiidae and belongs elsewhere.

Abstract:
The present research investigates the modern Japanese print movement Shin-hanga, which began in the Meiji Era (1868 1912) and was developed in the two subsequent eras, Taish (1912 1926) and Shwa (1926 1989), at a time when Japan underwent a process of westernization. Such a context is explained in the first chapter, which helps us understand the development of Shin-hanga and his relations with the world and Western art, mainly European. The movement itself is explained in the second chapter: its beginning, development and the leading artists. The landscape, or the views of places was the theme chosen for the analysis of the images. As an example of the movement, the highlight is on the artist Hiroshi Yoshida (1876 - 1950), who had many opportunities to travel outside Japan, having experience in the West and East. Yoshida made paintings and prints and used the traditional Japanese technique in his production, but also incorporated Western concepts in the study of light, for example. His works were studied alongside Ukiyo-e prints and some Impressionist paintings by European artists.

Abstract:
This project is a translation of the first two chapters of Durarara!!, by Ryohgo Narita, and chapter 2 of Parade, by Yoshida Shuichi. I wanted to do a translation because I love reading and I want to be a translator. I became interested in the Durarara!! novel after seeing the anime. Since this was right when I was planning my senior thesis, I thought it might be fun to do a translation of the novel. There are official English translations of the Durarara!! anime and manga, but not the original novel. After discussing the project with my thesis advisor, Dr. Gabriel, we decided that I should translate part of Durarara!! for the first semester and part of Parade, a book with which Dr. Gabriel was already familiar, for the second semester. Dr. Gabriel has already translated Parade, but the translation has not yet been published. Throughout the translation, I made notes on any issues I had. I also noted the page numbers in the original text. The most challenging and fun aspect was trying to find a balance between keeping the author’s style and making the story sound good in English. I think I gained valuable experience from this project.

Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010510.

Full text
Abstract:
The work of Kimiko Yoshida (born on June 23rd, 1963, in Japan and living in France since 1995), mainly based on photography, is founded on the creation of « myths ». This study is about searching, defining and analysing the « functions » of Kimiko Yoshida's self-portraits. The « myths of the Photographer », at the origins of her work's functions - aiming. amongst others, to « inform, represent, surprise, signify, create desire» according to Roland Barthes' Camera Lucida - are rooted in the society, the culture and the time the artist belongs to, and as a consequence also in the singularity of his/her personality, experience, and intimate story. Thus, the general title of this study brings forwards a research of « personal and plural myths in Kimiko Yoshida's work of art», whose topic of the « in-between » is the main aesthetic position, the artist and her work situated between Japan and the West between representation and abstraction, between reality and fiction, between quotation and transgression. The fictional speech through and in the image undergoes several transformations which make up the four founding lines of this thesis, that is to say the distinctive in-between of the « conceptual character » defined by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Whut is Philosophy ) applied to Kirniko Yoshida's name : the study of a geographical and cultural in-between defining a singular artistic « syncretism » : the illustrations of the several perceptible space-time dimensions in Kimiko Yoshida's work, notably through the games/aims of the images' colours : and the questioning about the subject in the image, between trace and absence

Abstract:
This paper aims to observe the changes of the Yoshida Doctrine as the guideline of Japans international performance in the beginning of the 21st century. In order to do it, we will focus on the threats of East Asia region as well as the relevance of the regional logic and how it directly influences the country\'s performance, especially regarding security issues. The theory of regional security complexes is used to understand Japan\'s international insertion, as well as to base the instability aspect that led to the changes in the Yoshida Doctrine. Among the main threats to the country, we highlight the Sino-Japanese relationship and the disputes in the gray zones, besides the North Korean nuclear program. The US alliance, as other regional countries alliances will also be analyzed in order to corroborate with the international performance of Japan. We will also address how the creation of the Japanese National Security Strategy and proactive pacifism complement the fundamentals principles of the Yoshida Doctrine in order to maintain the countrys interests in the growing instability of the Asian environment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Simulation-based Design and Manufacturing has shown its great effectiveness in shortening the design cycle. The objective of this work was to further increase the robustness of numerical prediction in capturing subtle wrinkling in sheet metal forming process. A stress-based wrinkling predictor is further developed to predict the initiation and wave mode of potential wrinkling in forming of flat sheet. The predictor is linked to the LS-DYNA commercial FEM package. Stress prediction from LS-DYNA was compared to the implicit code ABAQUS and satisfactory results were obtained. Hence, stress, nodal coordinates and connectivity information of the LS-DYNA simulation are fed into the predictor via an automatic interface program. A set of Yoshida buckling tests was used as a verification tool for the wrinkling predictor. 0.78mm thick 180B steel and 1.012mm thick 6111-T4P aluminum are tested. Through the comparison of the experiments and simulations, it shows that the wrinkling predictor is able to predict the initiation point and wave mode for the wrinkling accurately. In addition, post-buckling behavior in numerical simulations was captured through including initial imperfections following the wrinkling mode predicted. It was found that such a method provides more reliable results in terms of the post-buckling behavior than random imperfection.

Abstract:
In the field of industrial design, the aesthetic design is an important element to determine the quality of products and it is inevitable for them to make it aesthetic and attractive to improve the total quality of the shape design. If we can find an equation of aesthetic curves, it is expected that the quality of the curve design improves drastically because we can use it as a standard to generate, evaluate, and deform the curves. The log-aesthetic curve was proposed to generate high-quality curves efficiently [6]. Harada et al. insist that natural aesthetic curves like birds’ eggs and butterflies’ wings as well as artificial ones like Japanese swords and key lines of automobiles have such a property that their logarithmic curvature histograms (LCHs) can be approximated by straight lines and there is a strong correlation between the slopes of the lines and the impressions of the curves. Miura et al. defined the LCH analytically with the aim of approximating it by a straight line and propose new expressions to represent an aesthetic curve whose LCH is given exactly by a straight line. Furthermore they derive general formulas of aesthetic curves that describe the relationship between their radiuses of curvature and lengths. Also they defined the self-affinity possessed by the curves satisfying the general equations of aesthetic curves. The proposed curve is called the log-aesthetic curve. Agari et al. [1] proposed a method to input compound-rhythm log-aesthetic curves by use of four control points. Yoshida and Saito [2] proposed a method to generate log-aesthetic curves using three control points by searching for one variable, although Agari’s method searches for two variables. In this paper we compare Agari’s method with Yoshida-Saito’s method, and check out whether both of them generate the same curve. Next, we propose an efficient method to input log-aesthetic curve segments with an inflection point. Furthermore we try to improve the quality and the efficiency of the aesthetic design by plugging an log-aesthetic curve module in a commercial geometric modeler “FullMoon”.

Abstract. The 1st ESAFORM Benchmark, called EXACT [1], enabled an in-depth study of the factors that contribute to the accuracy of predictions and efficiency of finite element (FE) simulations of deep drawing of a cup from AA 6016-T4 sheet through the joint work of 11 teams. FE analyses were conducted with elasto-plastic models or crystal plasticity approaches using commercial or academic FE codes. This paper reminds the content of EXACT benchmark and gives new results that highlight the importance of the tool stiffness and various contact conditions to predict the ironing forces and the thickness distribution along the cup wall. The use of the Benchmark experimental data and virtual tests performed with DAMASK crystal plasticity code to identify and validate a two-surface kinematic hardening model based on Yoshida and Uemori approach is also discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) of the neck continue to represent a significant societal problem with associated costs estimated at over $5 billion annually. Recent dramatic increases in whiplash-related research has produced some interesting new findings related to its injury mechanism. It has been shown in human volunteer and cadaver experiments that the human head-neck structure often exhibits a transient S-shape during the initial kinematic response (Grauer et al. 1997; Luan et al. 2000; Ono et al. 1997; Yoganandan et al. 1998). Such a finding has significant impact on the injury risk assessment using the instrumented anthropomorphic test dummies in vehicular or sled testing. Unlike the recently developed dummy necks for rear impact testing, such as BioRID and TRID, the Hybrid III neck does not exhibit an S-shape curvature or the so-call “retraction” motion in rear impact testing. Numerous studies have reported that the Hybrid III neck is too stiff for low-speed rear impact testing (Svensson et al. 2000; Yoshida and Tsutsumi, 2001). Nevertheless, the Hybrid III is still being used for motor vehicle safety evaluation in rear impact as it is the only dummy neck that has been incorporated in the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

Abstract:
Water-ingress accident, caused by steam generator heating tube rupture of a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) is an important accident to consider because it will introduce positive reactivity leading the nuclear power increase rapidly, as well as the chemical reaction of graphite fuel elements and reflector structure material with steam. Researches and simulations (Zuoyi Zhang et al. 1995; Zheng Yanhua et al. 2009) have been carried out for calculating the total amount of water ingress and to validate the safety and security of HTR. The water ingress amount, which is our mainly concerned, ranges from a few hundred kilograms to thousands of kilograms, because of the different reactors and different computing methods. The place, where the water deposits, is most likely to be the bottom of the steam generator.. Such liquid water removal, with the approach of providing a forced circulation in primary loop and accelerating the evaporation, is analyzed in this paper. Many experimental data have been got on water evaporation rate (Dalton et al.; Willis Carrie et al. 1914; Yoshida, Hyodo et al. 1970; Sweer et al. 1976; Pauken et al. 1995). All these formulas have a common form, ṁ = hc(Pw − Pa)/hw, which shows the relationship between evaporation rate and velocity over water face, water temperature and the relative partial pressure of the water vapor. This formula has been used widely in chemical industry and other fields and shows good agreement. FLUENT CFD code (ANSYS Fluent 14) is used for the calculation of the distribution of the flow and temperature fields. The evaporation rate is estimate combined thermal fluid data with empirical formula. As the working condition of empirical formula and that of actual reactor don’t match very well, sensitivity analysis is necessary in this report.

Abstract:
An analysis is developed for a compressible bulk-flow model of the leakage path between a centrifugal-compressor impeller’s shroud and its housing along the impeller’s front and back sides. This development is an extension of analyses performed first by Childs [15] for pump impellers. The bulk-flow model is used to predict reaction force and moment coefficients for the impeller shroud. A labyrinth seal code developed by Childs and Scharrer [21] is used to calculate the rotordynamic coefficients developed by the labyrinth seals in the compressor stage and also provides a boundary condition for the shroud calculations. Comparisons between the measured shroud moment coefficients by Yoshida et al. [18] and model predictions show reasonable agreements for the clearance flow and reaction moments. For the conditions considered, low Mach number flow existed in the shroud clearance areas and compressible-flow and incompressible-flow models produced similar predictions. Childs’ model predictions for the direct damping and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients of a pump impeller produced reasonable agreement; hence the present model was validated to the extent possible. A rotor model consisting of an overhung impeller stage supported by a nominally cantilevered rotor was analyzed for stability using the present bulk-flow model and an API standard Wachel-formula model [10]. The bulk-flow model predicted significantly higher onset speeds of instability. Given that some compressors have been predicted to be comfortably stable using API standard Wachel-formula but have been unstable on the test stand, these results suggest that unidentified destabilizing forces and or moments are present in compressors. Seal rub conditions that arise from surge events and increase the seal clearances are simulated, showing that enlarged clearances increase the preswirl at the seals, thus increasing these seal’s destabilizing forces and reducing stability margins. These results are consistent with field experience. Predictions concerning the back shroud indicate that shunt-hole injection mainly acts to enhance stability by changing the flow field of the division wall or balance piston seals, not by influencing the back-shroud’s forces or moments. Effective swirl brakes at these seals also serves this purpose.
