This edition presents a fully modernised and annotated text of Samuel Rowley’s 'When You See Me, You Know Me', first performed by Prince Henry’s Men at the Fortune playhouse c.1604. This thesis will focus on two similarly positioned characters: Peggy Olson and Leslie Knope, both of whom are female characters who successfully navigate male-dominated workplaces. Using Bonnie Dow’s lifestyle feminist framework and critique of postfeminism, Sheryl Sandberg’s advice for women who wish to succeed in the workplace, and bell hooks feminist theory, I hope to use this thesis to locate Peggy and Leslie’s respective places in the tradition of feminism on television, and I will argue that describing characters like Peggy as “feminist” is outdated.

In its most canonical form, conversion involves pairs or sets of word forms which share both their phonological (and orthographic) form as well as some element of meaning, but which seem to belong to di↵erent word classes. My goal for this thesis is to investigate the concept of (mis)labeling female protagonists in contemporary British fiction as mentally ill—historically labeled as madness—when subjected to traumatic events.
