This thesis aims to analyze the database of video-sharing site YouTube, through an archeologic look for the medium, and the insertion of the audiovisual in this environment proposed by Foucault (2008), seeking to understand how the database, through its repository structure in constant motion, modifies the audiovisual within the site. The research tries to understand the concepts of "file" and "utterance" also proposed by Foucault, as well as the specific concepts that permeate the digital media, such as software, interfaces, and hyperlinks. The paper also delves into McLuhan (1964) propositions of media as a man extension, proposing the computer as an extension of the brain; movement that leads us to the concept of Body-Image, which suggests that the true picture of image is between human perception and object itself, therefore, it exists only in the dialogue between body and image. This idea is improved up through a methodology that we call brain-cartography, a method that seeks to identify the observable on the site from a search process conducted by the affection, according to the propositions of Hansen (2004), supported by Bergson, where we chose objects that affect us. This process is driven by keywords that perform this interconnection between different observables. Rather than focusing solely on the videos from the site, we identified all the tools that make this different audiovisual on YouTube. Among which, we highlight different possibilities from the software, user interaction with the machine, as well as the very way that the database is organized. This cartographic analysis identifies points capable of stating which database is emerging from YouTube, making it possible to understand a little more about the interaction between the database and the website. The concept of embodied proposed by Hansen (2004), as well as McLuhan (1964) studies are unavoidable in the methodology organization, allowing us to understand the connection between the database and memory, thus, leading the search for the analysis which cannot observe only the videos within YouTube, but all their potent, allowing it to emerge through a new audiovisual database. A database as an extension of memory, which is capable of, from small utterances, put the file in motion, producing part of an audiovisual experience that comes with generating a Youtubity that can be perceived in different objects analyzed. Building through distinct utterances, some statements that become part of the discourse in the final analysis.

This research aims to discuss Deaf cultural productions from the media space You Tube, taking such context as a place of education, cultural demarcation, and for the constitution of identities. The culture, in the perspective which I take myself to conduct this work, is crossed by the discursive process and begins to be studied within its social complexity situated in an arena of conflicts generated by the search for meaning and, hence they are part of the games of the relations of power / knowledge. Inserted in these issues I direct it specifically to the virtual environment You Tube, where videos are posted for free access to internet users. The choice of this space to search the materiality of the research is related to the significant cultural content produced and released by deaf people. I seek, on the discourse of difference, to investigate the production strategies of deaf people nowadays, taking the videos here analyzed as output devices. Five videos inserted into two analytical categories were chosen, selected based on a cataloged spreadsheet that allowed a graphic display of the contents of cultural deaf, highlighting the humor and educational issues. Accordingly, the directions that follow in this research guiding the formation of these identities in the context of media and production of meanings is what keeps the deaf cultural difference. In the humoristic Field these meanings are put into circulation by producing representations that operate in contemporary logic, using comedy as a strategy to establish other deaf identities, not less cultural, but perhaps over other truths. In the educational field, these videos tighten the system of inclusive education, identifying such legal actions as a threat to deaf cultural constitution of subjects. These tensions still make sense in these times that the inclusion takes the stage of discussions in contemporary educational policy. Grounded in the field of Cultural Studies in Education, I take the methodological research projects from a posture of suspicion, avoiding immobilization and ready methods, giving malleable directions to the research.

"You Tube as a Source of Information for Irritable bowel Syndrome: a Critical Appraisal." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/324.

Abstract:
Introduction: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is estimated to affect 11% of the population globally with a significant female predominance. IBS appears to afflict all age groups and socioeconomic conditions, thus making it a disease that permeates a very large part of society. While often debilitating, only 30% of those with IBS will indeed visit their physician. In an era dominated by social media, it is no surprise that 40% of all consumers report that online information affects the way they deal with their health. YouTube is one of the top 5 most accessed online resources for medical information. The strong reliance on online information as well as the rising prevalence of IBS has prompted us to determine the educational quality of IBS YouTube videos. Methods: We performed a YouTube search using the keywords “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” from September 3-25, 2016. The top 297most viewed videos were included and analyzed for characteristics, source, as well as content. The source was classified as healthcare provider, alternative medicine provider, patient and/or parents, company, media, or professional society. Content was further classified as medical professional education, advertisement, personal experience, patient education, alternative treatment or increase awareness. A scoring system was designed based on current accepted guidelines from multiple professional and academic societies to evaluate quality (-10 to +25 points). Negative points were assigned for misleading information. Videos were also scored by a global quality score. Six blinded reviewers were asked to view the videos and score each video independently. Results: A total of two hundred and ninety-seven videos were analyzed, with a median of 6,671 views, 25 likes, and 2 dislikes. Females were most commonly depicted (36.4%). The most commonly depicted race was White/Caucasian (62.0%). Among video sources, alternative medicine was most represented (32.3%) with treatments that included water fasting, yoga, hypnotherapy, frequency healing, massage therapy, and essential oil therapy. The least represented source was professional societies such as hospitals (5.4%). Mean scores were statistically different from each other (pConclusion: YouTube videos on IBS are mostly produced by alternative treatment sources with often controversial treatments that did not align with Page 16 2017 Appalachian Student Research Forum current evidence based guidelines. Furthermore, videos from healthcare professionals provided better and more accurate quality of information compared to other sources.

Abstract:
Purpose and research question The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between influencers and followers on the social media platform YouTube. It includes how advertising and personal branding cooperate, and what outcome it has on the relationship between influencer and follower. 1. What different factors have an impact on the credibility regarding the relationship between the influencer and the follower? 2. What is required to ensure that the followers´ confidence in the influencer doesn't get hurt in the process of advertisement collaborations that take place on YouTube through influencer marketing? Method The essay is based on a qualitative research method, which has a deductive approach with some elements of induction. The empirical data consists of six semi structured interviews with experts, observations of seminars, seven survey interviews and 72 surveys with followers. Conclusion The results of the study show that a relationship occurs between influencer and follower due to the closeness that the followers feel to the influencers personal brand, which in the long run is developed into a strong capital of trust. Furthermore, it was found that the relationship isn’t affected by the advertising on the influencers channel, due to the fact that generation Z is shaped according to the prevailing advertising landscape, and see advertisement as editorial content. However, the study showed a number of elements required to maintain a good relationship – transparency and clarity regarding advertising, well-matched partnerships that can contribute to the channel and also continuity regarding the influencers personal brand. Finally, the importance of MCN networks is shown in the process to identify smaller influencers who hold a strong trust capital with their followers, thus validating the company's message at a higher level.

Lewis, Stacey. "VideoTag : encouraging the effective tagging of internet videos through tagging games." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/621745.

Full text
Abstract:
The tags and descriptions entered by video owners in video sharing sites are typically inadequate for retrieval purposes, yet the majority of video search still uses this text. This problem is escalating due to the ease with which users can self-publish videos, generating masses that are poorly labelled and poorly described. This thesis investigates how users tag videos and whether video tagging games can solve this problem by generating useful sets of tags. A preliminary study investigated tags in two social video sharing sites, YouTube and Viddler. YouTube contained many irrelevant tags because the system does not encourage users to tag their videos and does not promote tags as useful. In contrast, using tags as the sole means of categorisation in Viddler motivated users to enter a higher proportion of relevant tags. Poor tags were found in both systems, however, highlighting the need to improve video tagging. In order to give users incentives to tag videos, the VideoTag project in this thesis developed two tagging games, Golden Tag and Top Tag, and one non-game tagging system, Simply Tag, and conducted two experiments with them. In the first experiment VideoTag was a portal to play video tagging games whereas in the second experiment it was a portal to curate collections of special interest videos. Users preferred to tag videos using games, generating tags that were relevant to the videos and that covered a range of tag types that were descriptive of the video content at a predominately specific, objective level. Users were motivated by interest in the content rather than by game elements, and content had an effect on the tag types used. In each experiment, users predominately tagged videos using objective language, with a tendency to use specific rather than basic tags. There was a significant difference between the types of tags entered in the games and in Simply Tag, with more basic, objective vocabulary entered into the games and more specific, objective language entered into the non-game system. Subjective tags were rare but were more frequent in Simply Tag. Gameplay also had an influence on the types of tags entered; Top Tag generated more basic tags and Golden Tag generated more specific and subjective tags. Users were not attracted to use VideoTag by the games alone. Game mechanics had little impact on motivations to use the system. VideoTag used YouTube videos, but could not upload the tags to YouTube and so users could see no benefit for the tags they entered, reducing participation. Specific interest content was more of a motivator for use than games or tagging and that this warrants further research. In the current game-saturated climate, gamification of a video tagging system may therefore be most successful for collections of videos that already have a committed user base.

Inclusion is a subject that is increasingly being discussed in the society. As consequence, the insertion of people who have any kind of special educational need in regular classrooms has been increasing progressively. Although there are many laws guaranteeing pupils with some special educational need of adequate education in an inclusive school environment, it is often not obeyed. One of the reasons for this problem is the lack of adequate teacher training so that they can deal with these students. Therefore, it was proposed in this dissertation a way of collaborating with these teachers in their teaching practice. Between the years 2016-17, a set of three videotapes was made available for free through Youtube, where each class has a theme that helps the chemistry teacher to deal with inclusive classes and with visually impaired students. The videos were filmed in an informal way, following a previously established script and disseminated through the site itself, social networks and a workshop with UFF PIBID (Institutional Program of Initiation to Teaching) chemistry students. The first videotape briefly discusses inclusion, showing some concepts and laws, the second shows how teachers can deal with visually impaired students through the use of inclusive teaching materials, showing how to produce them, and the last videotape shows some examples of such materials already produced for teaching chemistry. The videos were analyzed in 2016 by twenty-five volunteer teachers from different areas of education already trained or in training. All evaluated positively, indicating some improvements regarding some recording technical aspects, such as lighting and audio. In this way, it was concluded that videotapes reached their main goal, going beyond their initial goal, reaching teachers from other disciplines as well.

Abstract:
We, as authors, have noticed a paradox in today’s society. We often hear inspirational quotes such as “you have to fail in order to reach success” or “you learn from failure”. Thomas Edison himself said “I haven’t failed; I have just identified many ways that donot work”. Yet in society and within many organizations, there is a lack of discussion and acceptance when it comes to mistakes and failures, thus also a lack of the learnings from them. Failure is actually a neglected and feared topic, referred as “the Elephant inthe board room”, where mistakes are manipulated in hope of being forgotten and nevernoticed. Nowadays, we live in a society in which individuals are chasing perfectionism. Therefore, there is a fear of making mistakes which hinders followers to dare and take risk to progress. We believe that employees constantly suffer from this pressure and unhealthy environment within corporations. Therefore, we wished to go beyond this issue as we found ourselves astonished by the large number of quote present out there. In order to explore the concept of failure, we identified two kind of organizations in which the culture of mistakes and failures are different than in corporations. The two fields investigated are the orchestra and football team. Mistakes in these organizationsare not feared rather expected and accepted. We asked ourselves what do these leaders do differently and if managers could learn from the conductors and coaches in order to avoid or prevent. To answer these questions, we analyzed different major componentsof leaders such as their perspective about performances, their role as leaders, the communication and relationship with their followers and last but not the least their perspectives and way of handling mistakes. It appears indeed that organizational leadershave lessons to learn from coaches and conductors regarding the four main area we have analyzed such as considering mistakes as part of the past and source of learning as well as implementing a two-way communication.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis focuses on motivations for watching beauty videos on YouTube. The aim is to clarify why viewers watch amateur videos that communicate topics related to physical appearance. Assuming the audience as an active actor of media communication the thesis is based on uses and gratification theory. Viewers watch beauty videos consciously to meet their individual needs. Based on an analysis of eleven interviews with regular viewers of beauty videos this thesis reveals five categories of motivation. Beauty videos represent the source of information, the source of entertainment, the platform for communication with individuals with shared theme of interest and the tool for self-education. These motivations are not specific for this specific type of media and can motivate viewers to watch amateur beauty videos and professional beauty shows equally. The key motivation for watching beauty videos on YouTube is the interest of videobloggers. Authors of beauty videos disclose parts of their privacy, show their imperfections and interact with their audience. Using these practices videobloggers evoke the illusion of a close relationship between them and their viewers. Viewers have the opportunity the create strong social ties to videobloggers.

"Using Social Media and Professional Learning Communities as Tools for Novice Teacher Collegiality and Improved Self-Efficacy." Doctoral diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.17872.

Abstract:
abstract: Teacher attrition and the migration between schools and districts can have a negative impact on quality of education and teacher performance. Novice teachers leave the profession because they are overwhelmed by the workload and responsibilities of the job. In a previous action research cycle, I found that novice teachers' perceptions of isolation and lack of opportunities to share experiences had a negative effect on teacher perceptions of efficacy. This action research project examines the effect of leveraging social media and professional learning communities to provide opportunities for a group of novice teachers to share experiences and seek advice. By addressing the challenges that novice teachers face and providing solutions for common problems, it is the hope of this researcher that highly effective teachers will remain in the classroom. The results of the study indicate that the combined use of Twitter and YouTube in collaboration with professional learning communities will improve teacher perceptions of efficacy. Teachers who participated in the social media based professional learning communities are also more likely to remain in the classroom.

Abstract:
The development of social network sites (SNS) has been one of the most influential phenomena of digital technology in recent years. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center on the use of SNS in the United States (Smith, 2013), two-thirds of adults use tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspac and Linkedin and 60% of mobile applications used by smartphone owners are linked to the social network. The growing interest of Internet users for SNS is also confirmed by one of the latest Nielsen studies (2011). According to this study, Internet users in Europe spend more and more time on social networks and blogs: for example, Italian users spend 31% of their total time on the Internet by visiting these categories of services. Among the various SNS, Facebook is now the most popular, with over 900 million users, of which over 500 million access via mobile products (Facebook, 2012). " Social Media" refers to a wide range of applications that allow users to create, share, comment and discuss a multitude of digital content. Social media is considered "dynamic", "interactive", "democratic", "people-centred", "volatile", "social" and "adaptive" (Manca & Ranieri, 2016b). Another aspect of SM that is often overlooked is its ability to transform teaching/learning into a more social, open and collaborative activity. Researchers have used many theories/models to determine the feasibility of using social media for educational purposes. With the exponential growth of social media and the ease of information flow, new horizons are opening up, as the technological progress that allows the teacher to create a student/group on a social media platform and motivating learners to ask questions at any time to clarify their doubts. In addition, teachers can regularly provide parents has been with immediate feedback about the students’ progress. The use of social media, especially Facebook and Youtube, has boomed in the field of education. Thanks to Youtube videos, students can learn through sight and hearing by fixing and memorizing the key concepts of what has been acquired. Multisensory learning, as the name suggests, is the process of learning a new topic through the use of two or more senses. Sensory integration occurs in the central nervous system where complex interactions such as coordination, attention, emotions and memory are processed to give a meaningful response. This can include the visual and auditory combination. By activating brain regions associated with hearing and vision, they indicate a direct relationship between knowledge and sensory mechanisms in the brain. In this study I have examined with particular attention the relationship between technologies, digital media and the learning process. In the first part of the work the theoretical frame of reference is outlined for reconstructing the transition from a monosensory society to a multisensory society increasingly dominated by digital artifacts. The second part focuses on the results obtained by answering the question: "How do social media affect the visual and auditory learning of anatomy?" A multisensory integration model has been developed and there is a clear evidence that this model, based on social media Facebook and Youtube, has improved students’ performance in anatomy. Perceptual learning is a good testing ground for the multisensory as it is typically very slow, it requires many days of training and has been shown to be mediated by early visual areas of the brain traditionally considered to be highly unimodal. An auditory-visual study has been chosen because visual motion stimuli are typically accompanied by sounds and because there is anatomical evidence in animals and human neurophysiology studies indicating that hearing-sight interactions affect visual processing in the primary visual cortex as well. This study aims at the following: - investigating the role of the visual element in the study of anatomy thanks to the use of Youtube; - exploring how Youtube and Facebook technology have played a role in enhancing students' learning skills - shedding new light on the importance of Youtube and Facebook as fundamental teaching tools and as a resource for both teachers and students. This empirical research shows the positive results achieved using SNS and multisensory models in both higher and university education. note

Abstract:

First year students in a junior high school in Kaohsiung City were recruited as subjects in this study. The purpose of this study is to understand how YouTube affects students’ learning interest and learning effectiveness when teachers integrate it into physical education in junior high school. According to the data we received by statistically analyzing the results when the teachers used YouTube and the traditional way to teach a basketball layup, the following conclusions about the experimental group and the control group were obtained: 1.All students in the experimental group enhanced their learning interest after YouTube-integrated instruction in a basketball layup was given. 2.Students in both the experimental and the control groups got obviously higher scores in the post-test than in the pre-test after YouTube-integrated instruction in a basketball layup was given, which represents enhanced learning effectiveness. 3.In the aspect of learning interest, different genders, one of the background variables, had significant differences in two dimensions: “I think PE is boring to me,” and “I hope my teachers will teach in this way.” No differences were found in the other dimensions. As for the other background variable “My teachers have used this type of teaching approach before,” students’ learning interest was not affected by whether they had been given YouTube-integrated instruction. The results of interviews with students showed that all interviewees were interested in PE class and that they all agreed that having PE class after watching videos was more attractive. 4.In the aspect of learning effectiveness, it was not affected by genders or by whether the students had been taught via this type of teaching approach. The results of interviews with students showed that all interviewees agreed that PE class was important, and most of them thought that YouTube-integrated instruction in physical education would be helpful for their learning in the future.

Abstract:
This research paper examines the role of the Internet as it relates to the development of social movements and political protest in the ‘physical’ world. It also analyses the role of independent media and reporting methodologies used by activists and net-artists. The emergence of online activism and an emphasis on collaboration, information sharing and open source tools also had a significant impact on new media arts discussions and aesthetics. The refugee activist movement in Australia is a key case study in this thesis, as it is an excellent example of how activists have used the Internet and WWW to garner support within the community and to engage people to come to protests. In addition, activists at the protests have reported these events on the WWW and this subject has also had a resounding impact within the context of contemporary and media arts. The implications of identity online is a major factor in constructing the arguments in this thesis, as the relationship between ‘real’ and ‘virtual’ space is explored in detail as it relates to personal identity and online community.
