In light of the fact/fiction divide, this paper delves into the literary genre of historical fiction for young adults and re-examines the disputed boundaries between fact and fiction. Exploring Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars, a work of historical fiction for young adults about life in Nazi-occupied Denmark, this discussion addresses the paradoxical nature of historical fiction: it is the fictional elements of historical fiction that play the crucial part in bringing historical facts closer to the young adult reader.

Abstract:
In recent years, fiction specifically set in or about the afterlife has become a popular, critically acclaimed subgenre within contemporary fiction for young adults. One of the distinguishing aspects of young adult afterlife fiction is its detailed portrayal of an alien afterworld in which characters find themselves. Whilst reminiscent of the world-building of high or quest fantasy, afterworlds in young adult afterlife fiction have a distinctively different quality, and that is an emphasis on liminality. Afterlife landscapes exhibit many strange, treacherous qualities. They are never quite what they seem, and this sense of a continually shifting multiplicity is part of the destabilisation experienced by the characters in the liminal world of the afterlife. Inspired by traditional but diverse images of afterlife, afterworld settings also incorporate aspects of dream-space as well as of the real, material world left behind by the characters. The uncanny world of the dead is not just background in these novels, but crucial to the development of narrative and character. In this paper, it is argued that the concept of liminal place is at the core of the central ordeal and quest of characters in young adult afterlife fiction. It explores how authors have constructed the individual settings of their fictional afterworlds and examines the significance of the liminal nature of the afterworlds depicted in young adult afterlife fiction.

Abstract:
Common in many young adult novels are the challenges of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. During this transition, young adult characters take on ambiguous statuses and responsibilities. The liminal or threshold state is the term used to describe this transition. This article examines the transition along with how the young adult characters in selected Tanzanian young adult novels navigate it: The Birthday Party (2013) by Mkama Mwijarubi, The Temporary Orphan (2014) by Hussein Tuwa, The Adventures of Kulwa and Doto (2017) by Hussein Kayera, and If She Were Alive (2019) by Deus Lubacha. In this case, liminality serves as a framework for analysing the portrayal of the precariousness of the transition and the different strategies that young adult characters use to reveal just how the transition is both limiting and enabling. Nonetheless, given the disparity in power between the young adults and their parents/guardians, and awareness of their vulnerability, the young adult characters invent different strategies to pretend to be conforming to parental expectations while simultaneously crafting alternative ways to expose the shortcomings of the adult society. Many of the tensions in the texts can be attributed to the parents and the young adult characters’ differing ideas of what it means to be a child and an adult. Put otherwise, the notions of childhood and adulthood are just as elusive as the transition itself.

Abstract:
Science fiction written specifically for young readers has had difficulty in establishing itself as a separate genre from fantasy, especially since there is a blurred notion of what constitutes fantasy vis-a-vis science fiction in children’s literature. This difficulty is reflected in the stumbling development of children’s and YA science fiction compared to the relatively clear development of children’s and YA fantasy. As such, trying to define what science fiction for young readers is takes on a malleable, inconsistent quality compared to the more established megatexts of science fiction for adult readers. It is through these unstable definitions of science fiction for adolescents that this essay examines how selected stories from the 2016 anthology Science Fiction: Filipino Fiction for Young Adults, the first anthology of Philippine sf writing that caters directly for a young adult audience, negotiate the genre definitions of ‘science fiction’ and ‘young adult’ for a non-Western audience. Studying how these imagined futures represent the experiences of young non-Western readers who have otherwise been excluded from YA science fiction reveals how the genre can widen and expand its parameters.

Abstract:
Questions of identity, power, autonomy and vulnerability carry a particular weight in cultures that have emerged from colonialism. Although few writers of fiction focus on the conflicts between African and European characters, a focus on power and marginalisation remains. One category in which this focus may be plainly seen is writing for and about young people. The study’s aim was to analyse young adult fiction written by a Ugandan female author, Barbara Kimenye to investigate this writing to find out how young adult vulnerability is depicted in literature. Although literature targeting young people in Uganda has flourished and though issues of limited representation have been scrutinised in literary studies, like gender discrimination, very limited attention has been accorded young adult representation in literature. This research analyses fiction written by a female author Barbara Kimenye to expand knowledge about the criticism of young adult representation in literature with particular focus on young adult vulnerability in an adult dominated world. The methodology was mainly qualitative research design, where a document analysis method was used to aid analysis and make critical appreciation of the fictional works. The study investigated the state of young adult characters in literature with special focus on their vulnerability.

Joshua Landy says “formative fictions” help us fine-tune our mental capacities. This article looks at how novels for young adults may challenge readers to fine-tune their capacities as readers of more complex fiction. Three sample titles ( I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, The Tricksters by Margaret Mahy, and Slay by Brittney Morris) make use of character-authors to invite readers to negotiate the terms of reading. Young readers normally have extensive childhood experience in the social negotiation of the terms of make-believe games (“You be the daddy”) and can apply this expertise to the challenge of these novels as they interact with the explicit observations of the heroines about the making of stories. This article takes up Aidan Chambers’ challenge to analyze materials for youth as a separate literature. By exploring the work of three novels published over a 70-year span, (the titles were published in 1948, 1986, and 2019), it meets his demand to include the history of youth literature in our considerations. In these sample texts, young readers are invited to turn back to early childhood in order to make use of the skills and experience of fictional engagement as first developed in pretend games; as a consequence, they develop more subtle capacities as interpreters of complex fiction, thus addressing a major challenge of what Chambers calls “the age between.”

Abstract:
Abstract: This thesis investigates the origins of contemporary fictional constructions of childhood by examining the extent to which current literary representations of children and childhood have departed from their Victorian origins. I set out to test my intuition that many contemporary young adult novels perpetuate Victorian ideals and values in their constructions of childhood, despite the overt circumstantial modernity of the childhoods they represent. The question this thesis hopes to answer therefore is, how Victorian is contemporary young adult fiction? To gauge the degree of change that has taken place since the Victorian period, differences and points of continuity between representations of nineteenth century childhood and twentieth century childhood will be sought and examined in texts from both eras. The five aspects of fictional representation that I focus on are: notions of innocence; sexuality; the child as saviour; the use of discipline and punishment to create the ideal child; and the depiction of childhood and adulthood as separate worlds. The primary theoretical framework used derives from Michel Foucault’s concepts of the construction of subjectivity through discourse, discipline and punishment, and his treatment of repression and power, drawn mainly from The History of Sexuality vol. 1 (1976) and Discipline and Punish; the Birth of the Prison (1977). I have chosen to use Foucault primarily because of the affinity between his work on the social construction of knowledge and the argument that childhood is a constructed rather than essential category; and because Foucault’s work on Victorian sexuality exposes links with current thinking rather than perpetuating assumptions about sexual repression in this period.

This creative works thesis comprises an exegesis and a novel. Both explore the ways that a postnatural perspective can shape the reading and writing of young adult dystopian fiction. Approaching literature from a postnatural perspective can highlight a connection between shifts in a novel's key terms and the development of the protagonist towards understanding their world as an interconnected ecosystem. Through its grounding in ecocriticism and children's literature criticism, this research investigates the contributions a postnatural perspective offers young adult dystopian fiction generally, and specifically, in the development of the novel When the Cloud Hit the Kellys.

The purpose of this study was to examine the adolescent novels that were awarded in Greece from 1985 till 2005 by four major organizations. The primary focus was to outline the main characteristics of the awarded adolescent novel that developed during the last 20 years in Greece and secondly, to examine the main characteristics of those awarded novels so as to understand the importance of this newly formed genre and the important role it can play in the development of the adolescent. In the first part of the study we outlined the development and the main characteristics of the adolescent novel while we focused on the different criteria that are used by the four major organizations that award and promote this literary genre in Greece. The second part of the study analyzes the various stages of the buildingsroman as it’s seen through the themes of the novels, while a major component of it deals with the way the Greek identity is portrayed and promoted as well as the model of the adolescent hero. The study suggested that adolescence is the period between childhood and adulthood, during which the adolescent changes both biologically and psychologically and those changes are directly related to his/her future personality. The study also indicates that the adolescent novel describes that period that coincides with the final stages of the maturation of the teenager. Therefore, the adolescent readers identify themselves with the heroes, their emotions, and the various problems with references to the surrounding environment and the every day life. It was also suggested that the adolescent reader can discover a role model in the novel’s heroes and heroines which could lead to a self evaluation and an evaluation of the others around him, while at the same time he/she can enjoy the entertainment and aesthetic values of the novel.

Introducing young people to fiction that depicts rape is important in that reading this type of fiction can be a more effective strategy for reducing rape-myth acceptance in young people than lecture-based prevention programs. To be fully effective, literature used for lowering rapemyth acceptance must fully resist rape myths. This paper analyzes Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and CRANK by Ellen Hopkins to find the ways in which each novel resists and conforms to rape myths, to determine whether these texts would be suitable for reducing rapemyth acceptance, and to identify ways in which future texts that aim to reduce rape-myth acceptance in young readers can be more effective. Neither Speak nor CRANK fully resists rape myths, which reinforces the validity of rape myths to young adult readers. Both novels resist rape myths that attempt to deny the reality of rape while conforming to rape myths that blame the victim.

Skating the Edge is a contemporary Young Adult novel, set partly in an adolescent psychiatric hospital in the narrated present time, and partly in the school and home of the protagonist Caitlin Michaels, in the narrated past. The novel deals with Caitlin's attempts to understand the suicide of one of the residents of the hospital, Anna, and also to understand the events that led to her own hospitalisation, which include her complicated relationship with her talented older brother, Nick. As the narrative unfolds, it is evident that Anna's suicide has been prompted by serial sexual abuse at the hands of her father and the inappropriate relationship between Anna and a male psychiatric nurse.

Abstract:
Emotional contagion, the process of unconsciously mirroring others’ emotions [6], occurs through various channels including facial expressions, vocal tone, and body language, influencing social interactions and responses to cultural stimuli like music and movies [3], [4], [1]. Facial expressions, analyzed using the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), provide insights into emotional transmission [2]. Thermal imaging, a technique for measuring facial temperature changes, offers a noninvasive method to study emotional responses [5]. However, the facial thermal response to emotional contagion remains understudied. This study aims to investigate how emotional contagion affects facial blood flow among highly emotionally contagious individuals, identified using noninvasive measures. Thermal imaging will capture temperature changes across ten designated facial regions of interest (ROIs), shed-ding light on facial muscle activation. By interpreting temperature variations in these ROIs, researchers seek to understand the physiological processes underlying emotional contagion. Previous studies have shown inconsistent findings regarding facial temperature changes during emotions like fear and joy, highlighting the need for further investigation. This research aims to clarify these discrepancies and advance our understanding of facial thermal responses to emotional contagion, contributing to the broader field of emotion research and potentially informing therapeutic interventions and communication strategies.Initially, Eighteen participants participated in the study. Two groups of standardized emotionally contagious video stimuli (Happy, Fear) were used to induce emotional contagion.The videos started with a one-minute relaxing clip to help participants achieve a neutral emotional state before watching the emotional contagion clips. Following the two-minute emotional contagion video, a blank screen was displayed for one minute to observe the aftereffects of the emotional contagion on participants. Facial temperature was recorded from Fluke Ti 400, and facial expressions were recorded from the webcam. Participants were asked to fill out an emotion-intensity feedback form to rate the experienced emotion and its intensity during video stimuli. Eight participants’ data was removed from further analysis because of inconsistencies. Out of the remaining ten, we further shortlisted five highly emotionally contagious participants with the help of the emotional contagion scale. Ninety baseline and arousal thermal images (10 seconds each) were identified and analyzed using FACS. Ten important regions of interest(ROIs) were selected for facial thermal variations. The interpretation of temperature patterns on selected ROIs produces a physiological time series signal, reflecting changes in blood flow associated with emotional responses. As previously discussed, blood flow radiates across the blood vessels when an emotion happens, which is why a gradual shift in the baseline occurs when an emotion takes place. To assess significant differences in facial thermal temperatures from baseline to emotional contagion, the Mann-Whitney U test and average temperature differences were used. During both emotions (fear and joy), the temperature of the nose decreased on the faces of participants. However, during fear, the temperature dropped in the forehead, left eye corner, and right cheek, while during joy, it increased in the left eye upper region. Additionally, while in fear, the left eye upper, right eye upper, and nose exhibited decreased temperatures, whereas during joy, the forehead, left and right eye corners and nose showed reduced temperatures. Mann Whitney U test showed significant emotional arousal in all the ROIs. Only the right eye corner and left cheek in two participants during fear and the right eye corner during joy in one participant was showing insignificant differences.[1] Amy Coplan.
