Abstract:
Youngia zhengyiana, a new species of Youngia sect. Mesomeris (Asteraceae: Crepidinae) from Guizhou province of south China is described and illustrated. The placement of this species within Youngia is assessed based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the nuclear ribosomal ITS and on morphological comparisons with related species. The new species can be easily distinguished by morphology from the only species known to possess 5 florets, Y. szechuanica. The infrageneric classification and the recently debated circumscription of Youngia are discussed in the light of the nrITS phylogeny, which includes several species for the first time. Pseudoyoungia is confirmed as a congener of Youngia. The redefined Youngia is still non-monophyletic with Lapsanastrum nested within it.

Abstract:
A new species of Asteraceae, Youngia jiulongshanensis, is described and illustrated from Mount Jiulong, south-western Zhejiang Province of East China. It most closely resembles Youngia heterophylla, but differs in having smaller oblong basal leaves (vs. basal leaves oblanceolate), lateral lobes of leaves 1–2 pairs (vs. 1‒8 pairs), 5‒7(8) florets in each capitula (vs. 11‒25 florets in each capitula), involucre 5‒6 mm long (vs. 6‒7.5 mm long), inner phyllaries 5 (vs. 8). Observations on pollen grains of Youngia jiulongshanensis and Y. heterophylla detect the pollen grains of the new species are significantly larger than those of Y. heterophylla. Sequences of ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) and cp DNA demonstrate Youngia heterophylla as the closest extant relative of the new species.

Abstract:
The pollen morphology of 15 species representing four sections of Youngia and 11 species from six other genera of the tribe Cichorieae was investigated. Measurements and observations were conducted through scanning electron microscopy. This study aims to provide new and useful information regarding the extent of pollen morphological diversity within the genus Youngia and related genera in the tribe Cichorieae and thus to contribute to a better understanding of the taxonomy and evolution of these groups. Six pollen types, distinguished primarily by the number of apertures and spines in the polar region, are described. Palynological characters are not useful for the delimitation of Youngia and its closely related genera Crepidiastrum, Ixeridium, and Crepis at the generic level, and did not fully resolve the relationships between the groups. The distinction of Faberia from the other members of the subtribe Crepidinae is supported by the pollen characters. Pollen morphology also did not support that Youngia sect. Desiphylum sensu Babcock and Stebbins may be separated at the generic level either as Tibetoseris or Pseudoyoungia. Four pollen types were found in Youngia s.l., i.e. Y. racemifera type, Y. japonica type, Y. prattii type and Y. sericea type, which partly reflect the sectional classification of Youngia sensu Babcock and Stebbins. The systematic position of Y. racemifera should be reconsidered according to pollen characters. The pollen data suggest that Y. sect. Mesomeris is not monophyletic, and the relationships of its species require further examination.

Youngia hangii T.Deng, D.G.Zhang, Qun Liu & Z.M.Li, sp. nov., a new species of Asteraceae, is described and illustrated. It was collected in Wufeng County, Hubei Province, Eastern Central China. Youngia hangii is morphologically most similar to Y. rubida, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by capitula with 8–10 florets and the hairy leaf surface. Phylogenetic analyses, based on the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and one chloroplast marker (rps16), showed that Y. hangii and Y. rubida were sister species with good support. The results of both phylogenetic analysis and the morphological data support the specific rank of Y. hangii.

Abstract:
Main objective of this diploma thesis is to finish a construction of the Bulge test apparatus for measurement of thin films, perform first tests on commercially available Si3N4 membranes and bilayer membrane with aluminium. First part of the thesis is focused mainly on literature review of current knowledge regarding this topic and other methods of thin films testing. Experimental part deals with construction of apparatus, methodology of data evaluation and results of the measurement. The thin films of interest are fabricated as amorphous silicon nitride or bilayer of mentioned nitride and either aluminium, titanium or Ta-B-C layer. The apparatus has been built in house in collaboration with Institute of Scientific Instruments of CAS. Both reliability and repeatability of this method has been tested on over 160 measurements of commercially available membrane. The results of measurements are compared with literature and nanoindentation test. More detailed data analysis is currently under development with colleagues at Institute of Physics of Materials. It has been proven beyond doubt that Bulge test method and constructed apparatus are suitable for the measurement of several mechanical properties of thin films.

Shepherd, Jean Mary. "Messy boundaries : the lived experience when younger children's nursing students are required to care for young people." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2012. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/8790/.

Full text
Abstract:
It is acknowledged that caring interactions between younger, adolescent student nurses and young adolescent patients could precipitate particular difficulties and concerns for both parties during their journeys toward successful self-identity. The research undertaken identified two key dimensions: that of professional identity of the student nurses and that of illness identity for the young patients. These issues have been critically analysed using the theoretical underpinning of the seminal identity development theorists. In order to understand the true meaning behind the lived experience of both groups of participants during these caring interactions, a hermeneutic, Heideggerian, phenomenological study was undertaken. In line with this methodology individual, unstructured interviews were undertaken with 11 student nurses (aged between seventeen years five months to eighteen years eleven months) and nine young patients (aged between thirteen years and seven months and eighteen years and one month). Three main themes emerged from the data: (1) Messy boundaries; (2) Emotional security; (3) Being Younger making a difference. The findings highlight both concerns and benefits brought about by these caring situations. Concerns raised by the students relate to emotional distress, perceived lack of knowledge, confidence and professional identity. Also of concern is dealing with sensitive information disclosed by the young patients. Benefits identified by the students relate to being able to spend quality time with the young patients, being on the same level as them in informal ‘normative’ relationships, relieving their boredom and helping to momentarily distract them from their illness. Concerns highlighted by the young patients centre around issues of trust and confidence in the students’ professional abilities, the perceived lack of knowledge of the students in relation to their illness, and the students’ lack of understanding of their feelings. In common with the students, the young patients felt that the opportunities afforded them to ‘chill out’, be normal young people, and to be able to forget about the business of getting better, were invaluable. The friendships formed represent crucial therapeutic relationships which were not explicitly recognised by either party. The research has led to recommendations for improving student nurse education relating to young people/adolescents which it is anticipated will more appropriately meet the needs of the students and the patients. It has also enabled the creation of two models to support the unique engagement of the nurse-patient interaction, particularly in relation to the care of young people with a chronic illness: i) A Model for Processing Sensitive Information Revealed by Young Patients who may have a Chronic Illness ii) A Model of Adolescent Care Which Promotes Normalcy

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with the determination of the Young’s modulus of coatings using the impulse excitation technique (IET). The theoretical part of the thesis describes Cold and Thermal Spray technology, theoretical foundations of the impulse excitation technique and models of composite materials. The experimental part of the thesis deals with the determination of the tensile modulus of copper coating created by Cold Spray technology. The impulse excitation technique has been used to measure fifteen samples with coating thickness ranging approximately from 0,4 to 2 mm. Results from this measurement were evaluated using five composite models to establish the Young’s modulus of the applied coating. The best results were achieved by using the composite model based on rule of mixtures (ROM).

Abstract:
Yellowstone Lake is located in the protected federal lands of Yellowstone National Park. This park is situated in the Rocky Mountains and its boundaries reach into the tri-state areas of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. While many researchers have investigated the history and geography of Yellowstone National Park, Yellowstone Lake has been largely ignored as a topic of research. In order to reconstruct the evolution of Yellowstone Lake as a cultural landscape, this study focuses on Yellowstone Lake temporally and spatially as an important and central area of Yellowstone National Park. This study suggests that Yellowstone Lake's large and diverse physical geography produces diverse natural environments, cultural landscapes, and national park experiences. The results of this study show that through a combination of concessionaire investment, government management, and visitor demand, the cultural landscape of Yellowstone Lake has changed dramatically over time. This change is depicted through a verbal and cartographic description of Yellowstone Lake's cultural landscape evolution from 1870 to 1966. The verbal description is accompanied by a series of maps reflecting significant changes in the lake's cultural landscape. This research also provides a useful template and methodology for other historical geographers researching national park cultural landscapes. The archival research component to this project involved gathering data from Yellowstone National Park superintendent reports, development files, concessionaire files, historic maps, guidebooks, correspondence, and historic photography. By developing a set of methods that used a combination of data sources (aerial photographs, historic maps, guidebook descriptions, historic photographs, and field-based observations), conflicting and sometimes inconsistent written archival records could be reconciled and an accurate description of the lake emerged. This study raises questions about the role Yellowstone Lake plays in the larger identity of Yellowstone National Park. The results of this study will be useful for future national park management and development professionals. A better understanding of Yellowstone Lake's historic cultural landscapes will aid these professionals in making decisions about cultural resource preservation, recreation, and historic preservation. In addition, this study may help national park managers and concessionaires to develop better cultural landscape interpretation for Yellowstone National Park and Yellowstone Lake.

Harvey, Richard James. "The impact of young onset dementia : a study of the epidemiology, clinical features, caregiving and health economics of dementia in younger people." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1998. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317905/.

Full text
Abstract:
Dementia affecting the under 65 years age group is increasingly recognised as an important medical and social problem. This thesis is based upon research carried out over a 2½ year period in two London boroughs. A comprehensive methodology was used to attempt to identify every case of dementia which began before the affected person was age 65 years and to establish a specific cause. The study identified 185 cases of young onset dementia, giving a prevalence of 67.2 cases per 100,000 at risk in the 30-64 years age group. Extrapolating these figures suggests that there may be 16,737 (95% CI: 13,975-19,879) people affected in the wider UK population. The prevalence rates for specific dementias included Alzheimer's disease (21.7/100,000 (15.6-29.3)), Vascular Dementia (10.9/100,000 (6.7-16.5)) and Frontotemporal dementia (9.3/100,000 (5.5-14.7)). Non-cognitive and behavioural symptoms were common in the patients, 53% experiencing delusions, and 44% hallucinations. There were no statistically significant differences between the different dementias. The caregivers experienced high levels of burden with 53% rating as 'cases' on the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Female gender, looking after someone with non-cognitive symptoms and poor marital quality prior to onset of the dementia all predicted higher levels of distress and burden. A 'bottom-up' direct cost-of-illness analysis was carried out on the patient sample. The total cost for the two areas was estimated to be £1.4 million annually, which extrapolates to £132 (£110-£156) million for all young onset dementia in the UK. There were no significant associations with patient or caregiver factors and cost-of-illness. Compared to older people with dementia this group of younger patients appear to use less community resources and more costly institutional care. Over the period of this study, concern about and services for younger people with dementia in both areas increased dramatically.

Kim, Ji-Hyun. "An Annotated Bibliography of Piano Concertos Written by South Korean Composers in the Twentieth Century." Scholarly Repository, 2008. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/27.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic overview of piano concertos written by Korean composers in the Twentieth-Century, using the format of an annotated bibliography. This project is of vital significance for musicians who wish to further expand their knowledge of the repertoire in this genre. In particular, this research serves as an important vehicle for those with a special interest in contemporary works, music by Korean composers, and for those who are looking for a contemporary source outside the scope of the standard piano concerto literature. The study provides commentary on the compositional and performance aspects of each work to serve as guideline for the consideration of professional performers, teachers, and conductors. The essay contains the works of twenty-five piano concertos by twenty-two composers; however, due to the lack of information this study will cover only nineteen piano concertos with compositional features and additional information. Most of the works are unpublished, but were collected through correspondence with the composers, as well as additional information from the Korean National Library of Congress, and online sources. The results of this research are intended to contribute musicological and ethnomusicological documentation of unknown works, repertoire source material for performing musicians, and bibliographic assistance in Korea to document and organize its own cultural output. In Chapter 4, the bibliography is arranged alphabetically by the composer's last name, and each work provides the biography of the composer, date of composition, commission and/or dedication, premiere performance, number and title of movements, duration, publication information, recorded performances, published reviews, composer's comments, and compositional features.

Abstract:
Children today encounter the English language on a wide scale, even outside the school walls. As they are exposed to various forms of English language input, they inevitably pick up a certain level of proficiency, which they can later use on their own. This study aims to more precisely research through which mediums English learners in primary school worldwide tend to encounter English the most, as well as how engaging in English activities outside the classroom might affect their English proficiency. By studying prior research on the subject through content analysis, it was found that, while there are some regional differences in terms of prevalence, children mainly encounter English through television, music, and computer games. It was also found that many children who had never before received any English training still possessed a level of English proficiency. These findings shed light on the importance of input for language acquisition as well as how children’s extramural interests can be of importance in the classroom setting.

Abstract:
Effect of Stone-Wales percentage defect on effective elastic modulus of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) is investigated. The Stone-Wales defect is a crystallographic defect that happens in nanotubes and is believed to affect the nanotubes mechanical properties. In order to calculate the mechanical properties of SWCNTs under axial tension, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the Morse potential is performed. An in house FORTRAN code is developed and utilized. The Young’s modulus of the perfect SWCNTs and those with different defect percentage is obtained using the classical elasticity theory. It is observed that for low percentage of defect (less than 8%) as the diameter increases the Young’s modulus of SWCNTs slightly increases. However, for high percentage of defect (more than 8%) as diameter increases the Young modulus clearly decreases.

Abstract:
Background: Endometrial carcinoma is a disease of older postmenopausal women, and is relatively uncommon in patients younger than 40 years. Endometrial carcinomas in this age group may be familial, associated with Lynch syndrome, or sporadic. Patient usually has increased exposure to estrogen. In 2%–14% of cases, it occurs in young patients (less than 40 years of age) who are eager to preserve their fertility. Its treatment includes hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy and in some cases, radiation therapy. Prevention of fertility is major challenge encountered in such cases. Aim: To present a case of young woman with endometrial carcinoma and through it to review the literature of its presentation and management in such groups. Case: We report a case of endometrial cancer in a 35-year-old woman with previous 3 cesarean treated for abnormal uterine bleeding and cared for in our department. Conclusion: Most endometrial carcinomas presenting in this young age are associated with estrogen excess. Pathologically they are usually low-grade endometrioid carcinomas with lower stage and are associated with favorable clinical outcomes. With this case the authors emphasize the need of endometrial reckoning in young females with abnormal bleeding before starting any medical treatment. Also highlighting the management options in such cases where fertility preservation holds challenge.

Abstract:
Older adults commonly walk slower, which many believe helps improve their walking stability. However, they remain at increased risk of falls. We investigated how differences in age and walking speed independently affect dynamic stability during walking, and how age-related changes in leg strength and ROM affected this relationship. Eighteen active healthy older and 17 younger adults walked on a treadmill for 5 minutes each at each of 5 speeds (80–120% of preferred). Local divergence exponents and maximum Floquet multipliers (FM) were calculated to quantify each subject’s responses to small inherent perturbations during walking. These older adults exhibited the same preferred walking speeds as the younger subjects (p = 0.860). However, these older adults still exhibited greater local divergence exponents (p<0.0001) and higher maximum FM (p<0.007) than young adults at all walking speeds. These older adults remained more unstable (p<0.04) even after adjusting for declines in both strength and ROM. In both age groups, local divergence exponents decreased at slower speeds and increased at faster speeds (p<0.0001). Maximum FM showed similar changes with speed (p<0.02). The older adults in this study were healthy enough to walk at normal speeds. However, these adults were still more unstable than the young adults, independent of walking speed. This greater instability was not explained by loss of leg strength and ROM. Slower speeds led to decreased instability in both groups.

Abstract:
In this study, the effects of fatigue and cryogenic treatments on the mechanical behavior of low-density polyethylene/ multi-walled carbon nanotube (LDPE/MWCNT) composites have been investigated. Injection-molded samples of LDPE/MWCNT composite with different MWCNT weight fractions (0.1–5.0 wt.%) were subjected to cryogenic and fatigue treatments under different testing conditions, and the residual-mechanical properties were investigated. To monitor the fatigue damage, additionally, the electrical conductivity was measured. The results show that the LDPE/MWCNT composites retained good residual-mechanical properties after fatigue (more than 85% of its initial Young modulus) and cryogenic (more than 75% of its initial tensile strength and Young’s modulus) treatment. For the LDPE/MWCNT composites, the electrically conductive nanotube network can be efficiently maintained up to 25 000 fatigue cycles.
