Abstract:
This thesis explores architecture's role as host and its relationship with guest through the research and design of a new youth hostel for Washington, D.C. The etymological duality of host is confronted in the project's structure, as well as its liminal spaces. This new hostel offers comfort, protection, affordable accommodation, learning opportunities, and moments of camaraderie to young guests of the nation's capital.

Abstract:
In a centrally located area in the city of Richmond, the youth hostel that I propose provides young people and backpackers a suitable place to stay while enjoying their journey in the historical city of Richmond. The youth hostel offers inexpensive overnight lodging and other amenities they can use for themselves such as self-serve kitchens, laundtry rooms, etc. Something that is worth mentioning, the youth hostel's site is also close by the Richmond Visitor Center. It can offer travelers some travel information or souvenir venue. Furthermore, with the distinguished site, there is another characteristic. That is, the building was built in 1963 and it represents the International Building Style. The Jackson Ward community primariry consists of tra-ditional architecture style buildings, such as Italianate and Second Empire styles. The building for this project is the only modern structure. This makes it stand out and give the impression of an emotionless institution. Therefore, there is no doubt that the International Style building holds a place in this community. So, how can the community embrace this site? How do the characteristics of Jackson Ward integrate with my building? And how can the archi-tectural style of this building relate better and warm up to the residents? By transforming the residential design elements in Jackson Ward Area, my endeavor is not only to create a welcoming youth hostel inside the building but also to introduce Richmond's history and famous spots to travelers. While more people visit the youth hostel, more people will know about Jackson Ward, and the city of Richmond.

Abstract:
The dissertation "Independent Hostels: the case of Lisbon" offers a systematic approach of a particular tourist accommodation type – hostel- in Lisbon, and its effectiveness for the image of the city as a tourist destination for young travelers. The hostels are a part of the supply sector of tourist accommodation in the budget segment, where there has been a market evolution, in a quantitative and qualitive matter, possibly as a consequence of contemporary Western society habits, where tourism experiences are increasingly valued at younger ages. The Power of Youth Travel Report (UNWTO, 2012) points out to the relevant extent of the youth travel market in international arrivals and tourism receipts. Hostels, the most frequently used accommodation type by this segment, have been adapted to the “new tourism” specifities, and presently offer a wide variety of answers meeting the specific needs of its target audience. The hostel supply in Lisbon city was choosen as a case study, for its strong growth in recent years, and its international proeminence for its good business practices. It has also contributed to a significant improvement of the ability to receive young tourists, based in a concept of tourist accommodation offering good price, location and informality. The importance of the youth travel market in the international tourism emphasizes today the hostel prominent role. The city of Lisbon is expected to benefit with an increase of young travelers arrivals, related with new travel habits, especially price sensitive, intensive user of information technologies and wide information-sharing on social networks and other platforms, among friends and acquaintances. This practice enhances the influence among potential tourists to Lisbon. In addition, it sustains a potencial gain towards long-term loyalty of young visitors who, satisfied with their visit to Lisbon, may return at a later stage, spending more, as they represent the adult tourists of the future. The findings of this study enhance the contribution of this accommodation sector for the consolidation of Lisbon’s image perceived in the youth segment. This dissertation relies on a conceptual reflection, embodied in the descriptive analysis of the case study. The methodological plan, designed for an integrated interpretation of primary and secondary information sources, allowed to lecture on the most important issue raised: what kind of opportunities brings the youth tourism segment to tourist destinations?

The tourism comes, with time, is increasingly gaining strength in a shied named Best Age. In this shied, the hospitality is gaining each time more importance and turning itself in a decisive factor to the choice of a hosting place that will suit as a temporary home for tourists while they are away of their homes. The tourists that are part of this population shied called Best Age come choosing simpler receptive lodgings like Hostels, or Youth Hostel, than Hotels, for the difference of price but also for adding other important factors. Are these hosting places ready to receive this new demand? Therefore, the present article proposes to identify and profile of this new demand, as well as their needs and preferences, through field surveys made with a sample of this segment, in order to know how the hosting places are preparing to receive them.

Abstract:
This is a youth hostel designed to provide maximum functional comfort and efficiency in a relatively confined space. Because of its narrow floor plan, the windows are made large to make the rooms seem bigger and frame the view to the outside by drawing the viewerâ s eye out from the dense interior creating expansion to the outside. The orientation of the structure allows natural light to fill almost the entire interior and invites the cityscape to become a part of the interior spaces. In addition to the balconies on the berthing floors, the core of the structure supplements the idea of expansiveness by extending up and out to the gathering area on the roof where everyone can congregate and enjoy the outside view of the City of Roanoke. In my travels and staying in youth hostels throughout Europe, a high level of security wasnâ t always provided so I wanted to create spaces that provide security and convenience for the traveler and the travelerâ s belongings. The design of the bed units provides security and easy access for stowing and securing personal effects in the compartments located within while larger luggage and other belongings can be secured in lockers found in the locker rooms on the shower floors. I wanted to provide an additional sense of security for those traveling alone so there are berthing and shower floors designated for women and berthing and shower floors designated for men with designated restrooms located on each berthing floor.

Haden, Sara Chiara. "Psychobiological Mechanisms of Aggression in Youth." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27959.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, models of aggressive behavior have begun to appreciate the influence of both psychological and biological predictors of maladaptive behavior. The aim of the current project was to clarify the roles that the noradrenergic system (i.e., norepinephrine metabolite, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyglycol [MHPG]) and characteristics of the rearing environment play in different expressions of aggression (i.e., hostile and instrumental). It was predicted that higher concentrations of MHPG would be related to increased self-reports of aggressive behavior, especially hostile forms, while expressing aggression during an analog aggression task would lead to decreases in MHPG. It was also predicted that concentrations of MHPG would interact with childhood environment characteristics to predict aggressive behavior in youth. A sample of 68 male youth, aged 7 to 17, were recruited from two agencies in southwest Virginia serving disadvantaged youth. They completed self-report measures on their childhood environment, aggressive and delinquent behaviors, as well as exposure to community violence and negative life events. In addition, youth played a challenging computer game with an alleged â opponentâ and lost. Half of the participants were able to retaliate after the game against their â opponent.â Salivary MHPG was measured once before and three times after the game. A series of ANOVAs and hierarchical regressions were conducted in order to test the main and interactive effects of punitive childhood experiences and baseline MHPG on aggressive behavior. Findings failed to support the primary predictions; however, results of supplemental analyses showed significant associations of aggression with negative mood, negative family atmosphere, and increased baseline MHPG after controlling for negative family atmosphere. Also, parental punishment and rejection significantly predicted delinquency, and a significant interaction effect indicated that higher recovery concentrations of MHPG placed rejected youth more at risk for engaging in delinquent behavior. Results of the present study help to enhance understanding of the differences in biological and psychological correlates of aggression and delinquency in at-risk youth, and inform prevention and intervention efforts.

Abstract

In 2008 1510 refugee children and adolescents arrived in Sweden without their guardians. Many of them came from Iraq and Afghanistan. The purpose of this essay is to make a survey and compare the routines of four youth hostels for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. The main issues concern routines in the fields of introduction, everyday life, health, leisure activities, school, social network and development of their identity. The basis of the analysis is The Convention on the rights of the child of The United Nations, Randall Collins theory of interaction rituals and research on the subject. The literature has in most part been collected from databases. The qualitative method and semi-structured interviews are used in the collection of the data. The interview material has been analysed using a phenomenological approach. The main findings are: In the introduction adult support and basic information are important components. The daily routines consist of guidelines about, e.g. basic human needs, household chores and communication. Concerning health there are routines in the field of physical ailments. The mental wellbeing is though more often mentioned. There are routines about individual and group activities. Regarding school routines about starting school, home-work and school refusal are described. In the matter of their social network there are routines for the contact with relatives, friends and legal guardians and extension of the network. To guide them on their way to an adult identity there are routines for e.g. the prevention of drugs and violence.

Keywords: unaccompanied refugee children, adolescents, youth hostels, routines.

Mains, Mark. "HOSTING AN INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE YOUTH: THE INFLUENCE ON THE FAMILY." UKnowledge, 2016. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/hes_etds/42.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores how hosting an international exchange youth influences families. Participants in the study took part in a four-week summer exchange by hosting a middle school aged Japanese youth through the Kentucky 4-H/Labo program. Labo is a Japanese club program that encourages youth to learn about American culture through international travel. As society becomes more globalized, the skills and abilities associated with international travel are increasingly important (Anderson, Lawton, Rexeisen & Hubbard, 2006). Hosting international youth through exchange programs is one method of developing these skills and abilities. This qualitative study uses thematic analysis to analyze three primary data sources. These were in-depth, semi-structured interviews (n = 20), program evaluation, and lifeline interview methodology graphs. This study explored the gap left by prior research by being concerned with families who have hosted an exchange youth for a short period of time. Previous research has focused on long-term exchanges, individuals and Americans traveling abroad. From this analysis, seven major themes were identified. These include (a) challenges of communication, (b) anxiety of program participants, (c) belief in a privileged experience, (d) personal growth, (e) familial relationship development, (f) feelings of loss upon departure, and (g) increased appreciation of home and foreign cultures. Two outlying themes of (a) father made a surprising contribution to hosting the exchange youth and (b) idealization of Japan were included for the additional context of understanding they provided. These findings offer insights into the efficacy of these programs as well as how they benefit the family. The findings, implications for program managers and potential areas for future research are discussed.

Abstract:

Despite remarkable strides being made in legislation in South Africa, the country still faces immense challenges which directly impact on the care and protection of its children. Many children are removed from their families and placed into alternative care because of high risk factors in the family and community. However, because of the socioeconomic
situations of families, many of these children will not be able to return to their family. It is, therefore, essential that in the residential care programme, efforts are directed towards permanency planning for each child in order to ensure long term placement in a family. The host parent programme which has been introduced at Child and Youth Care Centres (CYCCs) acts as a precursor to foster-care placements. Following on this, host parents provide the child in need of care with opportunities to interact and form positive relationships with adult caregivers. This study has explored and described, by means of qualitative research, the experiences of host parents who accommodated children in need of care. Nine host parents were purposively selected from three participating CYCCs in Athlone, Cape Town. Data was collected by means of semi-structured individual interviews. The data was analysed according to the steps by Tesch in Creswell (2009). The findings suggest that host parents are instrumental to those children who cannot return to their natural families. The host parents&rsquo
interaction with the CYCC was both positive and negative at times. Recommendations and guidelines in order to develop and improve existing hosting programmes at CYCC&rsquo
s are provided.

Recently the tourist trend is increasingly popular toward younger generation, which increase the demand of youth hostels. Considering the operating cost, most of the hostels has an upper and lower bunk bed design to accommodate more guests compare to usual hotel. This raise an important concern toward fire evacuation. During the study, we analyze the potential safety issue when fire happens in youth hostel in Taipei through case investigation and test measurement and compare with the second edition in 2016 of the "Safety Performance Verification Technical Manual for Building Fire Prevention and Evacuation" of the Institute of Architecture and Building Research Institute of the Ministry of the Interior (hereinafter referred to as the manual). The content includes the impact of multi-layer bends in the guest room and the evacuation verification on fire personnel. This survey investigated 93 different youth hostels, conducted statistical analysis on the building types, room types, beds and other aspects of these youth hostels, and selected key cases for safe evacuation verification. The following will be discussed and analyzed from three aspects. 1.Reacting time: 30 participants were invited to do the test. In this test we measured the reacting time from hearing the fire alarm to notice catching fire when in nighttime sleep and compared with the home evacuation starting time in the manual. The real reacting time is 0.05 minute longer than the manual’s calculation. 2.Escape time: 32 participants were invited to the youth hostel to simulate the normal walking speed in up, down parallel walking time speed to the room exit in nighttime and compared with the data in the manual. The time was 0.06 minute longer than the manual’s calculation. 3.Smoke layer descent: 32 participants measured the space left between participant’s head to the ceiling and calculated by the evacuation time in the manual. Compare with the smoke floor descent time in the guest room and the 1.8 meter, the basic height of the part that allows the smoke layer to accumulate from the manual, in this research, the on site participant’s average height toward ceiling, it was considered 2.2 meter above as danger. For the reasons given above, this study is corresponded to the assumption that when the fire occurs, the overnumbered multi-layer beds and overnumbered beds in a room will deteriorate the casualty. This study hopes to raise public awareness of emergency evacuation problems in hostels and reveal the serious problem that hostels’ safety laws haven’t been legislated in Taiwan. For the further research, the details of the laws and the solutions to the problems can be discussed.

In recent years, community websites and booking websites have become very popular. It is good news for the hotel industry. Therefore, many tourism companies use online reservation methods to increase sales and popularity, and provide more extensive booking information and customization services. But for small hotels, the workload of the counter staff gradually exceeds the load. The counter staff must not only pay attention to customer reservation information, but also deal with customer issues in a timely manner, and may sometimes arrange room chores. A good set of automatic reply systems can save the counter staff a lot of work. Therefore, how to improve the correct rate and accuracy of reply is a very important topic. This study uses Case-Based Reasoning with Cosine Similarity Calculations, and uses Term-Weighting Approach method to formulate keyword weights. After constructing a system with higher accuracy. This dissertation used ROT mode to introduce the resources of the private sector into the operation of public works, which will effectively solve the difficulty that government has no choice but to implement the operation of public works even under financial deficits. As a consequence, public works would not fall idle in the wake of short government finances and lack of professional operation, and the public would be encouraged to advocate the plan to recycle and to reuse the unused public works so as to achieve energy conservation and the prospect for the sustainable development of Earth. Through sensitivity analysis on the changes in key parameters, this dissertation has clearly noticed the increase and decrease in various hypotheses and parameters, and will present different effects and evaluate the variable effects of all the parameters. Before it is executed, the effects and impact that may be caused by government, chartered companies, students, and banks should be considered. Before the plan is implemented, risk control measures should be formulated according to the results of sensitivity analysis.

For the past few years, there were annually more than 1,000 youth attended in "Shine Youth Camp" which has been holding 10 years. For the facts of its consistency, participatory and stability that motivated this researcher to explore this theme, and to search for a suitable key idea for today's youth mission. Through in-depth interview, sociological analysis and theological interpretations this thesis has following findings: 1. First, the mysticism within Shine's worship is one of the effective reason for youth mission. Second, a youth affects by his subgroup to decide to attend in Shine or not. 2. Leaders in administration groups need to aware volunteers' psychic state to avoid them burn out and give suitable resource when they need it. If a volunteer has a harsh experience in Shine, perhaps he/she may quit the voluntary jobs. 3. If local churches could establish the subjectivity with Shine, they may have fewer tensions and participate in Shine. An unexpected result is found in this dissertation. Every shorter era in church history of Taiwan had its own motivation and consideration doing youth missions. This appearance is called 'Paradigm Shift of Youth Mission' by this researcher. However, about the particulars, impact and improvement require more scholarly research.

Abstract:

This chapter has been dedicated towards painting a picture of the quality of life issues regarding migrant workers living in hostels. The results and findings as interpreted has brought about useful information that will be utilised to draw conclusions and recommendations. Quality of Life of Migrant Workers at Eskom The findings have reconfirmed who the migrant worker is in terms of the description given by Leatt (1981) which was the definition adopted for the study. The indices drawn from the objective and subjective indicators of quality of life which were adopted from Moller, Schlemmer and Du Toit's (1987) were used as the basis from which the interview schedule was drawn, and has proved useful. Reference is made in particular to questions 12,13 and 14. Relevant construct for quality of life were found, with more usable constructs from questions 12 and 13. Furthermore the statistical analysis of the vector of the mean test scores referring to the HOT 1 has also given useful information as it enabled the student to analyse three variables independently and jointly see section 3.3. Cross tabulations representing correlations between indices created out of quality of life indicators namely core quality of life issues as identified by Question(s) 12,13 and 14 and the objective indicators of quality of life, namely accommodation, the intake of nutritious food, and recreation practices. There is a clear demonstration of quality of life issues that should be looked at if the quality of life of migrant workers living in hostels has to be improved. Although there are many diverse quality of life issues identified in the study the three that were selected with the framework of this study has given usable information. The next chapter will address the conclusions and recommendations.
