Abstract:
With the rapid development of rural tourism and the vigorous implementation of rural revitalization policies, rural youth hostels in China are showing promising prospects. Mass-oriented youth hostels are no longer sufficient to meet the diverse needs of society. The development of youth hostels is undergoing new exploration and transformation, with the incorporation of environmental education content providing a new path for the development and transformation of rural youth hostels. This paper, from the perspective of environmental education, elucidates the significance of conducting environmental education in rural youth hostels, proposes new ideas for the construction of rural youth hostels, and outlines the implementation pathways of environmental education in these settings.

Abstract:
Present research is inspired to study the conceptions and misconceptions of hostels in eight different countries (Spain, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Hungary, Venezuela, China, Australia). The outcome of the research reports that the participants in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and in Hungary define hostels as youth accommodations, Spanish participants as cheap hotels and Venezuelans call them homeless shelters. The majority of the participants of all the above mentioned countries determine that the most important difference between hostels and hotels is the price. Americans, English, Germans, and Hungarians believe that a night would cost between 10 and 30 Euro in an average hostel, while Spaniards and Venezuelans say it would be under 10 Euro. Most respondents agree that hostels are; located in the city center, great places to socialize, offer safe accommodation, staying in there allows guests to save up money, and they are popular choices among travelers. American and English participants think hostels are only for people who like to party. Spaniards and Venezuelans think, hostels are outside of the city center. Spanish and English participants believe that hostels are too cheap to be able to offer a good service. Most participants say, the low price would be the main reason to stay in a hostel. Americans, English and Germans also think that other values are important besides the price: fun, the opportunity to meet people and atmosphere. In spite of all the above, most participants think people would rather stay in a hotel than in a hostel. Stereotypes evolve in different ways, which also explains how misconceptions about hostels developed.

Abstract:
Youth travel has the characteristic of being budget constrained. Young people are looking for new forms of travel and accommodation. At present, the lodging alternatives allow more trips for Young people. In particular, hostels are very frequented by young people, but increasingly they are an alternative for all types of travelers. In Oaxaca, hostels are a popular option for foreign travelers but also for Mexican students. But the main motivation that young people show when staying in a hostel is living with other young people and exchanging experiences. That is why the hostel is becoming increasingly relevant as a lodging alternative and competes with the offer that hotels offer.

Abstract:
Green roofs and green walls are a potential strategy to increase green spaces in the urban environment. These solutions bring multiple benefits to the cities at the economic and socio-environmental levels. However, from the point of view of private investors, green roofs and green walls often have a negative financial evaluation. Concerning this, the quantification of the benefits according to building use and occupancy could be an important tool to assist the decision-making process and guarantee returns on investment. This study aims to support the decision-making process by managers and owners of youth hostels regarding green roofs and green walls implementation. Using a structured questionnaire, users’ perceptions were assessed through a five-point Likert scale. The survey was conducted in five youth hostels in Lisbon, Portugal. Analyses were performed in two phases. Firstly, using the original sample (n = 345), and subsequently grouping homogeneous individuals through cluster analysis. The results showed that most respondents support green infrastructure installation in the hostel and consider that these solutions could provide a greater sense of individual well-being and local aesthetic improvement. However, there is no strong evidence that green infrastructure solutions are considered a deciding factor to select local lodging, despite the fact that it can be a tiebreaker factor between two similar options. Furthermore, findings have shown that 90% of the respondents from Cluster 1 and 92% from Cluster 4 are probably not willing to pay higher daily rates for youth hostels that have green infrastructure solutions in place. On the other hand, 67% of the respondents from Cluster 2 were potentially willing to pay an additional amount. For the 345 respondents, the most preferred green infrastructure typologies are indoor living wall and the accessible green roof. Moreover, findings support the gender socialization and identity theory showing that women have a greater environmental concern compared to men.

Abstract:
Novi Sad as the European Youth Capital for 2019 and the European Capital of Culture for 2021, with a large number of world-renowned manifestations, becomes a city tourist destination for young people who are mostly users of this type of accommodation, which indicates that hostels have great significance in the development of tourism in Novi Sad. Hostels have only recently been introduced as a term in legal acts in the hospitality which is the result of adjusting to the needs of the market, which has shown a great interest in this type of accommodation in our area, and therefore caused the opening of a large number of hostels, especially in major cities. Like the rest of the hospitality and tourism entreprises, hostels are facing major business challenges and a turbulent and dynamic business environment, which implies that much attention from owners and management must be directed to strategic marketing planning. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine the extent to which the strategic marketing planning process is being implemented in selected hostels in Novi Sad, as well as the extent to which the owners of these facilities are focused on formulating and implementing development strategies as the end result of this process.

Abstract:
The dissertation "Independent Hostels: the case of Lisbon" offers a systematic approach of a particular tourist accommodation type – hostel- in Lisbon, and its effectiveness for the image of the city as a tourist destination for young travelers. The hostels are a part of the supply sector of tourist accommodation in the budget segment, where there has been a market evolution, in a quantitative and qualitive matter, possibly as a consequence of contemporary Western society habits, where tourism experiences are increasingly valued at younger ages. The Power of Youth Travel Report (UNWTO, 2012) points out to the relevant extent of the youth travel market in international arrivals and tourism receipts. Hostels, the most frequently used accommodation type by this segment, have been adapted to the “new tourism” specifities, and presently offer a wide variety of answers meeting the specific needs of its target audience. The hostel supply in Lisbon city was choosen as a case study, for its strong growth in recent years, and its international proeminence for its good business practices. It has also contributed to a significant improvement of the ability to receive young tourists, based in a concept of tourist accommodation offering good price, location and informality. The importance of the youth travel market in the international tourism emphasizes today the hostel prominent role. The city of Lisbon is expected to benefit with an increase of young travelers arrivals, related with new travel habits, especially price sensitive, intensive user of information technologies and wide information-sharing on social networks and other platforms, among friends and acquaintances. This practice enhances the influence among potential tourists to Lisbon. In addition, it sustains a potencial gain towards long-term loyalty of young visitors who, satisfied with their visit to Lisbon, may return at a later stage, spending more, as they represent the adult tourists of the future. The findings of this study enhance the contribution of this accommodation sector for the consolidation of Lisbon’s image perceived in the youth segment. This dissertation relies on a conceptual reflection, embodied in the descriptive analysis of the case study. The methodological plan, designed for an integrated interpretation of primary and secondary information sources, allowed to lecture on the most important issue raised: what kind of opportunities brings the youth tourism segment to tourist destinations?

The tourism comes, with time, is increasingly gaining strength in a shied named Best Age. In this shied, the hospitality is gaining each time more importance and turning itself in a decisive factor to the choice of a hosting place that will suit as a temporary home for tourists while they are away of their homes. The tourists that are part of this population shied called Best Age come choosing simpler receptive lodgings like Hostels, or Youth Hostel, than Hotels, for the difference of price but also for adding other important factors. Are these hosting places ready to receive this new demand? Therefore, the present article proposes to identify and profile of this new demand, as well as their needs and preferences, through field surveys made with a sample of this segment, in order to know how the hosting places are preparing to receive them.

Abstract

In 2008 1510 refugee children and adolescents arrived in Sweden without their guardians. Many of them came from Iraq and Afghanistan. The purpose of this essay is to make a survey and compare the routines of four youth hostels for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. The main issues concern routines in the fields of introduction, everyday life, health, leisure activities, school, social network and development of their identity. The basis of the analysis is The Convention on the rights of the child of The United Nations, Randall Collins theory of interaction rituals and research on the subject. The literature has in most part been collected from databases. The qualitative method and semi-structured interviews are used in the collection of the data. The interview material has been analysed using a phenomenological approach. The main findings are: In the introduction adult support and basic information are important components. The daily routines consist of guidelines about, e.g. basic human needs, household chores and communication. Concerning health there are routines in the field of physical ailments. The mental wellbeing is though more often mentioned. There are routines about individual and group activities. Regarding school routines about starting school, home-work and school refusal are described. In the matter of their social network there are routines for the contact with relatives, friends and legal guardians and extension of the network. To guide them on their way to an adult identity there are routines for e.g. the prevention of drugs and violence.

Keywords: unaccompanied refugee children, adolescents, youth hostels, routines.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter shines a light on what happens in the dark: specifically, we present ethnographic insights from the nightlife economy and how chemicals enable youth to work “24/7.” Producers, promoters, DJs, hosts, artists, performers, drag queens, musicians, stage managers, bartenders, hospitality girls, and dancers from Amsterdam, Brooklyn, Bira (Indonesia), and Puerto Princesa (the Philippines) share with the ChemicalYouth team the various stimulants they use to stay awake and perform their jobs during non-typical working hours, and the other chemicals that they take in order to be able to sleep and recover afterwards. In Chemical 24/7 we compare and contrast the chemical practices of youth working at leisure industry sites in the global North to those of the low-income service sector and manual workers in the global South, and discuss how these different working conditions perpetuate chemical use. Our interlocutors rely on a range of chemicals for their work and social lives, and they develop practices to moderate their use in order to avoid adverse effects. Yet their practices differ depending on the availability, marketing, and policing of the substances.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the role youth hostels play in challenging some of the destructive narratives of the Israeli-Palestinian context, narratives revolving around Othering, and demonisation of the Other. To understand the role of hostels in this regard, the authors use the concept of transformative dialogue to demonstrate how hostels assist in the formation of partnerships between previously hostile groups, and also how hostels provide a tourism forum for self-expression and exposure to divergent narratives of space. The chapter is a comparative case study using qualitative data gathered at 14 hostels over a period of six years. The findings of the chapter stress the remarkable achievement of youth hostels in the region in challenging hegemonic discourses of separation and abjection, despite the enormous difficulty in doing so.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Pinjra Tod (Break the Hostel Locks), a contemporary feminist movement in India against sexist curfew rules in university residence halls (hostels) across the country. It discusses attempts by Krishnan, Kavita, Menon, Nivedita, Phadke Shilpa, Tiwari, Avantika, and others to explain the rise of this movement in response to the Hindu majoritarian regime’s regressive and coercive politics of caste purity. Using a global vocabulary of rights, and led by India’s millennial youth, the Pinjra Tod movement aims to disrupt Brahminical control over women’s lives across familial, communal, and institutional contexts. By centering women’s autonomy and unconditional freedom and rejecting societal infantilization of women, this rights-bearing discourse signals a shift in Indian feminism, creating the conditions for the rise of fourth-wave feminism.

Abstract:
This chapter shows that China’s effort to operate Western-style hostels was succeeded by another Chinese government initiative that facilitated military success against Japan but failed in its deeper alliance and nation-building aims: a wartime interpreting program. The Chinese Nationalists enabled American soldiers to communicate with other Chinese by cooperating with Chinese intellectuals and Chinese-speaking American missionaries to train more than 3,300 college students and recent graduates to work as military interpreters alongside US forces. But for both Chinese elites and senior US military commanders, these interpreters were more than simply a means to facilitate communication; they were also central figures in realizing their respective visions of how the alliance could and should make China into a modern nation. Both visions stressed the Chinese interpreter’s special role in uplifting the country and introducing American work habits and technology to the Chinese Army. But administering the program proved more difficult than the Chinese government expected, which eroded interpreter morale and heightened tensions with the US Army. By the time of Japan’s surrender, the interpreter program had helped turn China’s educated youth against the US military and the Chinese Nationalists.

Abstract:
There are numerous claims for sustainability in design, design research, environmental ergonomics, and other areas about human-environment interaction. However high specificity of each area, fragmented research, and various approaches to sustainability have induced the need to discuss the relationship between sustainability, design, and human interaction with involving environment, especially in built environment. New trend of growing number of independent hostels in Lisbon calls for deep analysis of this system. The study of publications, both scientific and public, was made to understand the characteristics of it. This article emphasizes the relations among sustainability, interior design, comfort, and well-being, necessary to understand the end-user of these travel accommodations. The findings are contributing for development of survey to be carried out in second phase of research.

Abstract:
Sustainable water management under climate change is ill-recognized given its importance, and it is unclear which policy instrument is optimal in promoting it. COP26 hosted the first Water Pavilion, and among presenters and attendees of Pavilion events, I interviewed a sample with water policy and management expertise. I collected data on the effectiveness and applicability of using bottom-up economic policies for sustainable water management. It seems this approach may be beneficial in certain contexts, but participants and event hosts emphasized that resilience in water is also key. Perhaps it’s time we move beyond sustainability and management towards resilience and stewardship. SDG Theme: SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation Type: Short talk (e.g. PowerPoint, Google Slides)

Abstract:
South Africa is currently facing an education dilemma with high numbers of youth unemployment and a growing specialized skills shortage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). STEM problem based learning events, hosted by government and the corporate sector, has shown to improve science and technology literacy and to encourage the youth to pursue tertiary education in the field of science. Unfortunately, schools face a range of challenges which restricts them from participating in these learning methods, depriving learners of the advantages offered by problem based learning. This paper presents a model for the sustainable provision of STEM problem based learning opportunities in South African schools. The presented model is based on a two-team mentoring model which makes problem based learning sustainable in a South African school environments. The Shell Eco Marathon is in its third year, and the students that have passed through the program will now be progressing to university. The impact of this program, therefore, will be become evident by the success of the students’ studies in the near future.

Abstract:
Every year, millions of Muslim worshippers visit Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj which is the fifth and final pillar of Islam. Mecca hosts more than 2,300,000 people from around 183 different countries and cultures every year. In 2016, these numbers were forecast to grow to 2,500,000 in 2020. This goal, however, has not been achieved due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has forced the government to severely reduce the number of pilgrims in 2020 to just 10,000 people. Ultimately, this situation is temporary and visitor numbers should continue to rise. Tourism, especially religious tourism such as the Hajj, is expected to boost the economy and create new jobs for Saudi youth in the services sector. Yet, despite the many benefits of the pilgrimage, the Hajj itself has several severe adverse environmental impacts. The activities of Hajj generate considerable solid and liquid waste, use large quantities of scarce fresh water and produce high levels of greenhouse gasses (GHGs).

Abstract:
This paper reports on the experiences of a research team designing and beginning to implement a research project exploring how safe and inclusive the various campuses of Te Pūkenga are for Rainbow ākonga (students). As Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest tertiary education provider, Te Pūkenga is bound and shaped by current anti-discrimination social policies. Under the 1993 Human Rights Act, discrimination based on gender was banned in Aotearoa. Same-sex marriage was legalised in 2013, and since 2021 people have been able to change their birth sex on official documents. In 2021, the Government also banned conversion therapy. However, despite these policies and as numerous national studies have documented, educational institutions remain hostile spaces for Rainbow ākonga. We aim to investigate ākonga and kaimahi (staff) experiences of inclusivity and discrimination across Te Pūkenga campuses. A research design was established, and we are in the process of collecting data. Because we have just begun the fieldwork at the time of this writing, we cannot discuss our findings to date. Instead, this article uses the feminist method of storytelling to explore the formation of a collaborative multi-site research team, the necessity of consulting with a Rainbow youth organisation when designing the survey, the research team’s duty of care to participants, the ethics process involved in conducting a multi-site organisational study and managing ‘teething problems’ when the online survey went live. This paper thus reports on our experiences of overcoming hurdles associated with a multi-site research project at a time of transition into one organisation, Te Pūkenga.

Abstract:
This paper examines how social exclusion contributes to violence in communities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Residents in socially excluded communities cannot depend on those institutions designed to protect them, and violence becomes an instrument to achieve certain outcomes, such as justice, security, and economic gain. When conventional methods of obtaining and working for increased social status, higher income, and wider influence are limited, as they often are in marginalized areas, some feel compelled to resort to violent acts. This paper discusses how social exclusion and violence interact in a vicious circle that leaves the socially excluded in a very hostile social environment where the borders between legal and illegal, legitimate and illegitimate are often fuzzy and uncertain. In this environment violence is used by a minority to acquire justice, security, authority and economic gain. The use of violence by this minority, however, affect the lives of the majority of excluded people that do not resort to violence. As youths are particularly vulnerable to this issue, this paper also examines the relationship between violence and the plight of Latin American youth gangs and street children.

Abstract:
Literature focusing on the aftermath of conflict in the Western Balkans, notes that many people remain focused on stereotypes and prejudices between different ethnic groups stoking fear of a return to conflict. This rapid review examines evidence focussing on various interventions that seek to promote inter-group relations that are greatly elusive in the political realm in the Western Balkan. Socio-political change requires a growing critical mass that sees the merit in progressive and conciliatory ethnic politics and is capable of side-lining divisive ethno-nationalist forces. This review provides an evidence synthesis of pathways through which micro-level, civil-society-based interventions can produce ‘ripple effects’ in society and scale up to affect larger geographic areas and macro-level socio-political outcomes. These interventions help in the provision of alternative platforms for dealing with divisive nationalism in post-conflict societies. There is need to ensure that the different players participating in reconciliation activities are able to scale up and attain broader reach to ensure efficacy and hence enabling them to become ‘multiplier of peace.’ One such way is by providing tools for activism. The involvement of key people and institutions, who are respected and play an important role in the everyday life of communities and participants is an important factor in the design and success of reconciliation initiatives. These include the youth, objective media, and journalists. The transformation of conflict identities through reconciliation-related activities is theorised as leading to the creation of peace constituencies that support non-violent approaches to conflict resolution and sustainable peace The success of reconciliation interventions largely depends on whether it contributes to redefining otherwise antagonistic identities and hostile relationships within a community or society.
