who are doing their CMS and examine the effect of Compulsory Military Service (CMS) on the transition from school to work by using discrete hazard models. We also investigate the time it takes to find the first permanent job to shed light on the recent evolution of the transition from school to work.Using Cox Proportional Hazard Model, we examine the effects of structural reforms and macro-economic conditions, and the permanence of these effects. We are able to study the differences in the hazard of obtaining the first permanent job by education levels non-parametrically. Finally, we investigate the changes in the cumulative baseline hazards over time and test for the presence of gender differences in the hazard rates by using time varying covariates. With the help of these covariates, we are able to compute the time needed for the closure of the gender gap.

Full textThis article presents a brief history of Military Brigade of Rio Grande do Sul from an education perspective, police academy training model and rites of joining the Institution. In the theoretical framework, constructed from premises of Norbert Elias and Gregory Bateson, the basis for these reflections lies as well as the concepts of youth and work. This research finds that occurring a process of juvenilization of the Military Brigade effective, as a result of policies replenishment vacancies for the post, with the aim of reducing the historical deficit. Because of this growing young labor force, the question is: what is the profile of young people who join the Military Brigade as a soldier, from the youth cohort? Through a qualitative and quantitative approach, it intends to reveal the motivations that led these young people to choose the activity of the military police and, from the common interest, defines the profile of this youth cohort. For this, we used the categories that define the transition to adult life and activities such as study and work, free time and leisure. This research was developed in three distinct stages, using the techniques of data collection through questionnaires, interviews and focus groups and gathered a significant sample of freshmen in the last two contests (2009 and 2012). After delineated the profile of entering students in BM, was used for comparison and analysis, the data presented by the study „Profile of Brazilian youth”, from “Youth Project”, conducted by the Citizenship Institute.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: With the shift to an all-volunteer force and the end of the Cold War, armed forces across the globe are finding it increasingly difficult to attract, recruit and retain the right quantity and quality of recruits in the ranks. Similarly, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has expressed difficulties with recruitment but more so with the ability to attract ‘high calibre’ recruits in order to staff a defence force that is disciplined and technologically advanced. Although this is a consequence of various economic, social and political factors, one of the greatest challenges facing recruiters is the changing work values and preferences of the new millennial generation. As the title of this thesis postulates, evidence from the West suggests a ‘clash’ in values between millennials, who are individualistic, protected, ambitious and self-centred, and the military, which requires conformity, obedience and structure. While there is a vast amount of literature regarding the all-volunteer force and youth values of military service in the West, there is no study of this kind in South Africa. In this study, I aim to fill this void by exploring young South Africans’ perceptions and experiences of military service. As there is no existing literature on the propensity to enlist in South Africa, focus groups and interviews were conducted with high school learners, Military Skills Development System (MSDS) members who have completed one year of military service and recruitment officers who come into contact with school-leavers from across South Africa. These discussions were framed around two broad questions, namely what are the work values of young South Africans and what factors attract young people to or deter them from the military job. The conclusion is reached that the SANDF is not an employer of choice because of various institutional and societal factors. The military job is largely unappealing to young South Africans, who are risk-averse, individualistic and wish to be in close proximity to their families. The culture of the military is also unattractive to the majority who are not receptive to authoritarian regimes that expect unquestioning obedience and discipline and emphasise hegemonic masculine ideals. Besides this, two societal forces have a significant impact on the ability of the ability of the SANDF to attract recruits. The decline in the prestige of the military job and the presence of an ever-growing civilmilitary gap indicate that youth are neither informed about the military nor see the military as a high status job in society. Consequently, the inability of the SANDF to meet recruitment targets can be detrimental to the ability of the SANDF to fulfil its mandate.

Abstract: This work looks into the political activism of young black rappers engaged in the creation of the «House of Hip Hop », an institution sponsored by the city government of Campinas, São Paulo, held by the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) between 2001 and 2004. The research seeks to explain the origins of the rappers? political activism, expressed by (i) their adhesion to rap as an artistic and political endeavour and (ii) the alliances they were able to make with the city's elected politicians in order to create the House. Drawing on Bourdieu's discussion of socialisation as internalisation of the objective conditions of existence, the dissertation discusses the processes by which the dispositions towards both music and political protest were created. It shows that an experience of modest upward social mobility in the parents generation provided the youth with strong ambitions. The impossibility of building a future through schooling for lack of good school opportunities, coupled with an early experience of racism in the school environment and in contacts with the police in the streets, directed them towards the cultural market, leading them to try to build a career as rappers. This was seen by them, at the time, as a possible way out of economic privation while keeping their black roots and dignity. Developing Bourdieu's theory of fields, the research takes into account the rappers? trajectoires from the moment when, after meeting with strong opposition from the established rappers in the city, they enter the field of organised politics, associating themselves with a black city councilmember (« vereador ») affiliated with the PT, who taught them the basics of organised political action. As a result, the rappers created an association that became perceived by the media and by the government as the hip hop movement of Campinas. As such, they could successfully negotiate with the appointed City Secretary of Culture the creation of the House of Hip Hop and secure for themselves key public jobs in this institution. The process of institutionalisation was followed by a group crisis culminating with a cleavage among the members and with the redirection of the youth ambitions towards the more secure public jobs, thus renouncing to the rapper career

This dissertation presents the History of CearÃâs Military Teaching, with emphasis to the Middle Military Teaching, ever since Fortalezaâs Military School is founded in 1962, an institution that offered us primary-researching source and that made possible a study of its past by allowing attending to its current-regular curricular activities. It shows that the School got consolidated as it follows its predecessor-institutionsâ steps: CearÃâs Military School (1889), CearÃâs Military School (1919), Preparatory School of Fortaleza (1942). In order to accomplish this dissertation, we used as historiographical references authors like Adriana Lopez, Carlos Guilherme Mota, Boris Fausto, Nelson Werneck SodrÃ, JoÃo Batista MagalhÃes e PlÃcido Aderaldo Castelo. P. A. Casteloâs book entitled ―HistÃria do Ensino no CearÃ‖ (1970) figured as a turning-point for this studyâs initial chronology. The results here presented, which are consolidated by the core-curriculum of Fortalezaâs Military School and by some studentsâ statements, demonstrate that Middle Teaching offered by the School fulfilled the purposes to the National Military Institutions as it forms its students to serve the military career, as it made a register reservation for the Army and as it graduated most of this students for civil professional. The school was meant for military children, although the classes held in the period of 1962-1968 have had civilian students, in search of a civilian future, came from the high society of North and North-East Brazilian

Full textThis research aimed to investigate police violence means and senses against poor young men between 18 and 29 years old, in Goiânia, Goias. Six young men, victims of police violence participated of this study, done between 2011 and 2013. It was developed a qualitative study, based on empirical and documental research as well as individual interviews with young men. Those instruments were used in order to foment the research theme. The investigation process was grounded in the Vigotski Social-historical theoretical assumptions, which are structured in the materialist historical-dialectical method. This theoretical method contribution was the premise, product, tool and support to this study sistematization because it was the base to analyse people s language about the means and senses of the police violence they had suffered. The results revealed stories of those yong men lives, which are defined by social exclusion and inequality. Those enlace in multiples forms of violence existent in society, result of the social and economic systems created by neoliberal policies. The reports revealed that violence against young, poor men has been banalized. It also showed that military police officers and State agents are not well prepared when they approach suspects. They use too much strengh and autority to interrogate people as well as other barbarities. Postures reflect ambiguity in the law as well as in decrees, declarations, conduct codes and conventions that deal specifically with human rights, because in practice they only exist to keep public order and protect State and higher classes heritage. The law goes from private to universal, excluding poor people rights. The analysis of what police violence meant to the young boys interviewed was the key to understand what police violence means for youth, in general. This investigation sought to extend the debate about police violence against poor young people in Goiás, and consequently broaden available data to investigate this kind of violence in Brasil. It will help social actors that work defending impoverished youth rights. This research also aims to cooperate with overcoming this tough reality by applying a security policy consistent with human rights and dignity and not excluding any social group.

Full textThis doctoral thesis focused on the educational value of social youth partipation. We consider investigation as a tool of change and cultural transmission. We see the need to investigate new models of non-formal education with young people. Because of these reasons, we will analyze the key factors that can make work with young people in a Youth Club turn into a social transformation tool as an educational agent of change in the territory. The investigation is carried out in the Casa de Joventut La Maranya in Benicàssim (Spain) and has been located in the principles of activist ethnography. The production and construction of information is based on observational, participatory and biographical-narrative approaches. The results are presented by a life history of the association and tell us about fomal and no formal elements that make Maranya an educational agent of change. This have allowed to re-work of new models of youth association with young people as well as reformulating current youth policies.

Full textThis research analyzes the process of emergence of organized groups of LGBT youth and their engagement. Semi-structured interviews were held with founders and coordinators of LGBT youth groups and field observation with the activities developed by the entities, which allowed discuss and describe: the emergence of such groups, their modes of organization and operation, their struggles themes and forms of action, such as their profile and engagement process. Thus it was possible to trace a historical overview involving the following organizations actives in São Paulo: Projeto de Apoio a Gays e Lésbicas Adolescentes (Pagla), E-Jovem, XTeens, Jovens e Adolescentes Homossexuais (JA) and Projeto Purpurina; As well as outline the current situation in Paris focusing on the following groups: MAG - Jeunes LGBT, Pôle Jeunesse, CONTACT e Le Refuge. These organizations hold meetings, online and off-line, of mutual support aimed at young people, which ranges from 13 to 29 years and cover mainly: self-acceptance, conflicts in the family, with friends, at school, university and work. Groups and young have reservations about the institutional policy (governments, parties, elections, opportunities for participation and social control), for them politics means promoting social change from their everyday lives, which can eventually move by specific claims regarding legislation, policies or public services.

Full textThis is a research about modern human reality and reveals a web of contradictions, challenging a lot of researchers in education to address the issue of youth. The research aimed to discuss one of the most debated phenomenon in contemporary society, a kind of manifestation of youth violence that occurs inside and outside the school walls, called bullying. Participated in this research youth of high school graduates of the Military School Multipurpose Model Vasco dos Reis, with aged between 16 and 18 years. In this Military College case, we have to considering the process of militarization it was gone through, as well, two fields rise: the educational - established by the State of Goiás Education System and the Military field - established by the State of Goiás Military Police Command. The social space is used for different movement s domination and power; symbolic violence materializes in disciplinary regulations that predict (warnings, suspension and expulsion), this way the pedagogical action exerted by the school will be decisive. So pretty straightforward, most young people interviewed recognized having suffered or committed some type of bullying. It should also emphasize the line of research that guides the research: Education, Culture and Society. With this research, I try to establish a bridge within teachers, students, education professionals and general public, the studies of Bourdieu. For this, I used technical research procedures and observation, questionnaire and interview. Even are made references to authors who discuss the topic nationally and internationally. It was evidenced in this study, the perceived violent practices among young people behind a curtain of strict disciplinary elements adopted by teaching agents of Military College, in the secret of classrooms, in the most various forms of invisible coercion, it was Bourdieu called symbolic violence.

This paper aims to understand and reflect on processes of socialization that represent the paths and juvenile trajectories as dispositions to engage in militancy in groups, collectives, organizations and environmental movements. Therefore, the imbrication of the school is considered as a space of formal education and socialization of the generations regarding the discussions about the environment. The research is qualitative and structured in two stages: first, with the application of a socioeconomic profile questionnaire; later, semi-structured interviews, as key points for the construction of oral narratives of young people research subjects. The relationship between youth and the environment is studied - in this research - considering the categories militant engagement and political socialization for tools that contribute to the formation and construction of projects and life trajectories of young environmentalists like social and political subjects, starting from the historical and plural concept underlying the concept of youth. Because of the peculiarity of the categories discussed, the research is conducted with young people from the state of Bahia who actively participate in movements, groups and environmental projects located in different municipalities of Bahia. Thus, research is made from a socio-historical perspective, in which the environment is understood while a field of struggles and conflicts permeated by social, political, cultural, ethical and economic issues. The path of arrival to the processes of socialization that lead or motivate young people to engage in environmental activism is marked in this paper by the discussion of issues that intersect the encounter between youth and the environment as identity and life project, ethics and environmental education, youth condition and influence of socializing agencies in the training of ecological subjects. For this, the research focuses on the theoretical ideas and assumptions that constitute a broad and significant field for the construction of dialogues between sociological and pedagogical theories, which allow us to perceive which socialization processes compose and construct the juvenile dispositions in the field of militant environmentalist engagement. Through the narratives, it has been observed that school, family, social groups, participation in unions, youth associations and youth ministries influence the youth environmental activism engagement, as well as it has been shown that reflecting and developing actions that evokes the institutionalized political participation of youth environmentalist are needed.

Full textIn 2010, the political decision was implemented to abolish conscription and build the Swedish Armed Forces on employed soldiers and sailors. Instead of conscription, voluntary military training was introduced in the way of basic military training. The government believes that youth activities, conducted by NGOs such as the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps, are a vital part of recruitment to the Swedish Armed Forces. The purpose of this paper is to find out if the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps can make the Swedish Armed Forces attractive and to what extent it motivates young people to apply for basic military training and the now resting conscription. This paper is founded on a quantitative method in the form of a questionnaire, based on Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene theory and Hackman and Oldham’s model. The survey was sent to 47 people with a background in the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps and who began the basic military training, NCO training or Officer training, between 2010 and 2013. According to this survey, the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps made the Swedish Armed Forces attractive to young people who attended the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps’ summer camps. This was, in particular, thanks to the officers at the summer camps, who acted by being good examples of leaders and representatives of the Swedish Armed Forces. One conclusion made is that the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps could be considered as a good recruitment base, where youngsters can try and evaluate military life, which thereafter can lead to motivated and committed recruits.

Full textThe contemporary mutation of Norwegian and Swedish Protestant circles, a sector largely unknown to French research, may be analyzed through the recent structural and ideological adaptation of the following missionary organizations Normisjon, Norsk Luthersk Misjonssamband, Norsk Misjonsselskap, Indremisjonsforbundet and Norme, as well as of two youth antennae equmenia and Acta. They are led to espouse behavioral patterns bearing resemblance with the ones of a religious community: they restructure, highlight trans-confessional networks and reframe and recast their objectives in the light of their militancy and militant objectives. Retracing the trajectory of popular movements through the “awakenings” and present-day metamorphoses, the aim is here to analyze the underlying re-actualizations at stake in this contemporary transformation. Be it in the form of modern ecumenism, the globalization of missionary issues, the challenge of trans-generational transmission or the imperative of economic and material rationalization, these reasons often have in common to highlight the phenomenon from the point of view of its internal factors and impetuses. However, the socio-historical conditions and the transformations (status, structure, objectives) that we highlight have simultaneously to be understood in the context of broader transversal dynamics, thus highlighting the limits of a “targeted” approach and calling for an analysis of the aforementioned sector as a distinct field of research within the sociology of religions in Scandinavia

This dissertation presents the History of Ceará‘s Military Teaching, with emphasis to the Middle Military Teaching, ever since Fortaleza‘s Military School is founded in 1962, an institution that offered us primary-researching source and that made possible a study of its past by allowing attending to its current-regular curricular activities. It shows that the School got consolidated as it follows its predecessor-institutions‘ steps: Ceará‘s Military School (1889), Ceará‘s Military School (1919), Preparatory School of Fortaleza (1942). In order to accomplish this dissertation, we used as historiographical references authors like Adriana Lopez, Carlos Guilherme Mota, Boris Fausto, Nelson Werneck Sodré, João Batista Magalhães e Plácido Aderaldo Castelo. P. A. Castelo‘s book entitled ―História do Ensino no Ceará‖ (1970) figured as a turning-point for this study‘s initial chronology. The results here presented, which are consolidated by the core-curriculum of Fortaleza‘s Military School and by some students‘ statements, demonstrate that Middle Teaching offered by the School fulfilled the purposes to the National Military Institutions as it forms its students to serve the military career, as it made a register reservation for the Army and as it graduated most of this students for civil professional. The school was meant for military children, although the classes held in the period of 1962-1968 have had civilian students, in search of a civilian future, came from the high society of North and North-East Brazilian

Full textThe relevance of the master's study is determined by the need to solve at the state level the problem of the upbringing of patriotism as the basis for the consolidation of society and the strengthening of the state. The problem is related to the need to counter the falsification of Russian history, the destruction of the system of traditional moral values of Russian youth. Achieving this goal involves solving the problems of improving the system of upbringing of children and youth, forming a socially active personality of a citizen and patriot. The priority direction of state youth policy is to create conditions for increasing civil responsibility for the fate of the country, ensuring national security and sustainable development of society. In order to actualize the potential of the young generation, it is necessary to support youth project initiatives. The project approach in state youth policy is considered both as an educational technology and as an instrument of upbringing activity. The aim of the work is to improve the technology of military-patriotic upbringing. Tasks solved in the dissertation: analysis of the concepts of military-patriotic upbringing, problems and prospects of the system of military-patriotic upbringing; the study of the potential of the project activities of youth organizations and the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs "Rosmolodezh" in military-patriotic upbringing; Development of a social project of patriotic upbringing "Ball of Heroes of the Fatherland". The object of study is the military-patriotic upbringing of Rosmolodezh, the subject is the project technology of military-patriotic upbringing Research methods: theoretical analysis of regulatory, legal information and scientific literature on the topic of patriotic research; quantitative and qualitative analysis of youth project initiatives. The novelty of the dissertation research is the allocation in the military-patriotic upbringing of a broad, socio-pedagogical component that provides each young man with a deep understanding of his role and place in serving the Fatherland, and a specific one, more aimed at preparing for a specific activity determined by the specifics of military service. The potential of modern Russian youth is actualized within the framework of the All-Russian contest of youth projects and the All-Russian youth forum campaign. The traditional method of analysis, revealing the essence of the project, illustrates the prevalence of military-patriotic education projects developed on the basis of a specific component. A wider socio-pedagogical component is represented minimally in the winning projects. It seems promising and necessary to develop projects of a broader orientation within the framework of military-patriotic upbringing. Theoretical developments can be used to scientifically substantiate military-patriotic youth upbringing programs, to prepare project applications for grant competitions for socially significant initiatives. The developed project can be used to organize cultural and leisure activities as a technology for the formation of value orientations in military-patriotic upbringing in different youth groups.
Rasco, Clark Joseph. "Demographic trends in the European Union: political and strategic implications." Thesis, Monterey California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/1526.
Full textThis thesis analyzes adverse demographic trends in the European Union, including sub-replacement birthrates and increasing median ages. It investigates the implications of these trends for the EU's prospects for becoming a stronger and more influential actor in international affairs. Pressures arising from population trends in and near the EU could ultimately affect national and EU cohesion, governmental effectiveness, and social stability. Absent remedial measures, social programs in some EU countries will be unsustainable due to the mounting financial burden of pensions and health care for growing elderly populations. Such financial obligations hinder funding other national programs, including modernized military capabilities. Nationalism and national identity are at issue in immigrant integration and assimilation efforts. The role of population trends with regard to the growing threat of radical Islamic fundamentalism is explored. The thesis concludes with policy recommendations that might be considered to avert the looming economic, social, and security crises that may result from these demographic trends. In short, the security and financial consequences foreshadowed by the current demographic trends of an aging, economically weaker, and socially conflicted European Union could present dramatic implications for the vital national interests of the United States.

Full textThis dissertation has as its main objective analyze the public policies of assistance to orphan, helpless, abandoned and/or offending childhood and youth in Caxias do Sul / RS, between 1962 and 1992. It searches to establish reflections that move toward two directions: on one hand, it investigates the relations of these municipal policies with the guidelines of the national public policies, entered in the context of the Doctrine of the National Security of the civil-military dictatorship (1964- 1985) and personified through the performance of National Foundation for the Welfare of Minors, and the State Foundations of Welfare of Minors. These guidelines, legally protected by the ‘Irregular Situation Doctrine”, legitimated in the Minors Code of 1979, sought forms of control and contention of the deprived childhood, criminalizing and putting responsibility in the children and young people for the poverty situation in which they found themselves. On the other hand, it searches to place possible discontinuities among the actions performed by the municipal government and the national regulatory policies, since Caxias do Sul had an assistance service municipalized, the Municipal Commission for the Support of Children, created in 1962. It also considers the transformations in the public assistance area after the Constitution of 1988 and the Statute of Child and Adolescent were enacted. They brought with them the notion of ‘Full Protection” and the guarantee of the rights. To execute this research, institutional, periodical, and oral sources were used and they were categorized thematically and analyzed according to the chronological narrative of the research. In the first moment, the trajectory of the institutionalization of children and teenagers in Brazil and in Rio Grande do Sul was considered, emphasizing the transformations occurred during the civil-military dictatorship and the process of bringing back the democracy to the country. Following, the caring reality in Caxias do Sul was analyzed from a subdivision that considered first the 1960s and the 1970s and, after, the transformations in the decades of 1980s and 1990s, until the creation of Tutelary Council in town, in 1992. The public policies to assistance or institutionalization of children and teenagers in Caxias do Sul matched benevolence, protection and philanthropy, situated inside a logical of the ‘Irregular Situation”, conjuncture that modifies gradually along the 1980s, with the self-criticism and the transformation of the institutions. In relation to the offenders, the initiatives from Caxias do Sul moved between the confinement and some reeducation actions, mainly when democracy was coming back to Brazil and in the moments of transformation of the national policies to infancy. Episodes of disrespect to the human rights, stigmatization by the press and extermination of deprived children and teenagers were part of the reality from Caxias do Sul in that period. On the other hand, Caxias do Sul created important protective instances, opening ways to the restructuration of its net of protection inside de logical of the guarantee of the rights from the Statute of Child and Adolescent.
Orievulu, Kingsley Stephen. "Natural resources and the crisis of nation-building in Africa: the case of oil and violence in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/11425.
Full textThe preponderance of intrastate violent conflicts in natural resource rich states has been attributed to a number of causal mechanisms. Theorists of conflicts thus tend to explain these conflicts using different approaches, notably path dependency and rational choice. These approaches examine issues such as ethnicity and political marginalization, weak but repressive state capacity, strategic dilemmas, foreign instigators of conflict, and the very pervasive theory of the resource curse. Natural resources usually lie at the heart of many of these conflicts and the resource curse theory has helped explain the effects of states’ dependence on the primary resource sector. This resource curse is therefore corroborated by the rational choice approach which insists that economic incentives explain the upsurge in rebellious activities within natural resource rich but poor and dependent states, especially in Africa. This research interrogates the rational choice approach of Collier and Hoeffler against the backdrop of issues in the Niger Delta conflict. It argues that the greed versus grievance theory remains inadequate in the light of the historical and sociological circumstances underlying political struggles in the region. The research report concludes that an integrated but eclectic approach be applied in the study of this crisis.

The research is a pioneer study on military image from the viewpoint of subjectivity. As the military image issue in Taiwan has received more attention in recent years, how the military image is presented in the general public, has obviously become worthy exploring. Considered as a method of discourse analysis, Q methodology combines both of qualitative and quantitative methods through a set of logical steps to study subjective perception. This study suggests that the use of Q methodology is particularly more useful for discussing abstract image issues, and the advantage of operant subjectivity can allow respondents to express their personal preferences through this research design. Basically, this study is an exploratory study on the deconstruction of the viewpoints of youth in Taiwan. There are five main points that found out through analyzing responses of youth in Taiwan, including: 1. The inevitable deception under tokenism; 2. Showing respect for discipline under complying with the law; 3. The junior staff members assumed responsibility of senior staff members; 4. Subjecting to the traditional operation and discipline of value; 5. The unescapable collateral punishment thinking under the concept of Family-Governed Monarchic Country. This study discusses the significance of such discourses in order to bolster the lack of relevant research on contemporary military image. At the end, in addition to discussing the findings of the research, the study aims to provide insights for subsequent research topics, as well as Q methodology applications. It is expected that this research will provide inspiration for new research issues.

Under the current system, most volunteer military servicemen are recruited from the fresh graduates of universities (colleges) or senior high (vocational) schools. With many years working experience, the author deeply believes that the success of the “Volunteer Military Service System” relies heavily on the quality of the staff. The main purpose of this research, therefore, is to explore the recruitment needs of the nation’s volunteer military service, aiming to satisfy the career requirements of the job-seeking youths in society. The author also discovered that, due to the changes in the social environment, it is usually difficult to find sufficient patriotism or career passion from the job-seeking youths who have enrolled in the selection process for volunteer military service. With the lack of the devotion of a military serviceman to sacrifice for the country, the youths are, in general, facing a gap between the reality and their perceived career life. It is hoped that, through this research, the author may identify some unexplored and useful information and provide recommendations to the Department of National Defense for the recruitment of volunteer military servicemen. Apart from satisfying the “career needs” of the talented youths, the most important objective of this recruitment process is to attract aspired youths who are willing to develop a career in the military service, so as to effectively build up the talent base in the national military force. The research is structured on the military career options by university (college) and senior high (vocational) school students. Focusing on research subjects of different backgrounds, the researcher endeavors to identify the influence of various factors on the intention for choosing a military career. These factors are, respectively, the need or willingness for a military career and the support level to the volunteer military service system. It is hoped that the research findings can be used as a reference material for perfecting the recruitment system of the national military force. A questionnaire survey has been conducted among some university (college) and senior high (vocational) school students in the northern area of Taiwan. A total of 491 valid questionnaires have been collected. The result of analysis shows that the research subjects all agree that the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs will influence on the candidates of the volunteer military servicemen. The research findings also support that there are significant positive correlation among the five levels of needs. It was also found that the safety needs and self-actualization needs both have positive influence on individual’s willingness to develop a military career. In other words, students with higher safety needs or self-actualization demands normally possess a higher willingness to select a career as a volunteer military serviceman. Physiological needs, on the other hand, also have a significant positive influence on the level of support to the transformation to a volunteer military service system. In other words, students with higher physiological needs are more likely to support the volunteer military service system. Further discussion has also been made in this research on the implications of these findings in terms of the various practices in management.

Full textYounger generation workers are often accused of being less engaged and less united in militant activities than the previous generations. The general aim of this research is to demystify the prejudices surrounding the commitment towards union activities of today’s young Quebecois. To do it, diverse concepts are presented as that of youth, generation and militant commitment. An assessment on the historic evolution of the militating commitment as well as the particular situation of the contemporary youth in the industrial action allow to draw up a general portrait. Our theoretical frame rests on concepts of individualism and conflict. The qualitative approach and the semi-directed interview were retained. The result of our survey led with seventeen mailmen and mailwomen of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (Montreal section) reveals that the militant commitment of the young people is at the same time the reflection of an alienation and a different way of conceiving militant commitment. The young people are not more individualistic than members of the other generations but they know little about the trade unionism. On one hand, the young union members take a step backwards to better appropriate the labor-union matter. It is possible to maintain that the militant commitment is not a static phenomenon, it evolves in contact of experience. On other hand, weakly socialized in the trade unionism and strongly socialized to law matters, to dialogue and to respect, they dread the violent driving and the warlike speeches. The later have softened vision without therefore passive, because they promote collective action and have more opportunities to deposit grievances.
