Abstract:
Michał Kazimierz Radziwiłł, nicknamed “Rybeńko” (1702–1762), was a prominent representative of a Lithuanian–Polish magnate family in the 18th century. However, researchers have yet to portray his activities as a learner and a respective study is in high demand. A wealth of preserved historical sources: a journal and letters, allow to learn more and describe the course of his studies. The young magnate received only home education and went on a youthful educational journey (a grand tour), like many of his magnate peers. What emerges from the autobiographical notes is a picture of the learning p

Victorian anthropologists have been nicknamed ‘armchair anthropologists’. Yet some of them did set foot in the field. Edward Burnett Tylor's first published work, Anahuac, or Mexico and the Mexicans, Ancient and Modern, described his youthful travels in Mexico. Tylor's confrontation with the ‘field’ revealed significant in tensions between the different beliefs and attitudes that Tylor held towards Mexican society. Contrasts between the evidence of Mexico's history (prior to European contact) and the present-day society of the 1850s led Tylor to see both progress and degeneration in Mexico, bo

Abstract Dr. Googol was lecturing the Spice Girls, a famous all-girl British rock band popular in the late 1990s. The sun shone brightly as they sat together on a bench beside Abbey Road. “Let’s talk about triangular numbers,” Dr. Googol says to Baby Spice, the blond-haired woman in the band.
